After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 29
Ji Fanghuai thought Jiang Zhi was referring to her amnesia causing her to forget their relationship, but her amnesia wasn’t intentional, and feelings couldn’t be cultivated instantly.
She could only say, “That’s not something I can decide.”
Jiang Zhi softly said, “You can decide.”
“How can I decide? The only thing I can do is not resist when you kiss me,” Ji Fanghuai was very honest; she was indeed trying her best to cooperate with Jiang Zhi.
No sooner had she finished speaking than Jiang Zhi kissed her on the corner of her mouth.
It was so fast that by the time Ji Fanghuai reacted, Jiang Zhi had already pulled back, sitting upright as if nothing had happened.
“You, you, you…” Ji Fanghuai touched the corner of her mouth, her face flushing red as if she’d received an electric shock. This was truly unexpected, and she had no guard up at all.
Jiang Zhi innocently asked, “You don’t like it?”
Ji Fanghuai felt her ears burning and said, “No.”
It wasn’t that she disliked it, it was just very sudden.
Jiang Zhi’s eyes lit up with surprise and delight. “Then you must like it.”
“Who told you there are only two emotions: liking and not liking?” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want to continue this topic.
She only wanted to interact with Jiang Zhi normally, but didn’t want to talk about those matters of romance.
She quickly changed the subject, asking, “Why are you still in contact with your professor?”
Jiang Zhi cooperated fully and became serious, saying, “Professor Li was my university professor. I followed him on an innovation project during my freshman year, and then I did projects with him for competitions every year after that. He was also my graduation thesis advisor. Actually, after I was accepted for postgraduate studies, I wanted to continue learning under him, but halfway through, I started a business with Xin Ling and went directly to the company after graduation. He’s always felt it was a pity, so we’ve kept in touch all these years.”
“That’s wonderful,” Ji Fanghuai sighed, cupping her face.
She didn’t even have anyone she could contact.
Jiang Zhi continued, “As for Li Yiyi, she liked following her dad around when she was little and met me early on. You shouldn’t take anything she says seriously; it’s just childish talk.”
“Even so, it doesn’t change the fact that many people like you,” Ji Fanghuai said, then realized she shouldn’t have focused on that and quickly added, “Then how did she say she knew me?”
Jiang Zhi smiled and said, “Since we’ve been together for so long, it’s normal for her to know you.”
“But she didn’t seem to know me; she only knew my name. She also said you couldn’t successfully pursue me,” Ji Fanghuai felt utterly confused.
What hurt her most was that everyone who knew her didn’t seem to like her.
Jiang Zhi frankly admitted, “Yes, you were very hard to pursue.”
Ji Fanghuai scratched her head awkwardly and said, “I don’t believe it. With so many people who like you, why would you be hung up on a crooked tree like me?”
“Them liking me is their business; me liking you is my business,” Jiang Zhi’s voice was slightly low and husky. “Besides, you’re mistaken. Plenty of people like you, too.”
“Who?” Ji Fanghuai simply wanted to compare with Jiang Zhi.
“Many people like you,” Jiang Zhi was careful not to say too much, only mentioning recent events. “For example, that guy who asked to meet you recently.”
Ji Fanghuai waved a hand and said, “He doesn’t count. I can’t even remember his name, and aren’t I supposed to be gay? Guys pose no threat to you.”
Jiang Zhi raised an eyebrow and said, “So you want to see me jealous?”
Ji Fanghuai was exposed and quickly tried to save face, saying, “No, I just wanted to know. Besides, even if I did, you wouldn’t really get jealous, right?”
Jiang Zhi didn’t look like the type to get jealous.
To her surprise, Jiang Zhi said flatly, “I would. I absolutely love being jealous.”
“Well… in that case, do as you please. It’s okay if I don’t know, anyway, since I wouldn’t recognize them even if I did,” Ji Fanghuai leaned towards maintaining their normal relationship.
She didn’t want to break the current state of their relationship.
To put it another way, she liked staying in her comfort zone; once she got used to a certain mode of interaction, it was hard for her to make changes.
Jiang Zhi’s eyes darkened slightly and she said, “There is someone you know, someone you’ve met before.”
Ji Fanghuai was stunned. She racked her brain but could only think of people she’d recently met who liked Jiang Zhi, not her.
After much thought, she was shocked. “Could it be Xin Ling?”
Jiang Zhi was also surprised by Ji Fanghuai’s guess and burst into laughter. “What are you thinking? It’s not Xin Ling. She doesn’t like dating; she only likes to have fun everywhere.”
“Then I can’t think of anyone.” The only person who was good to her that Ji Fanghuai could think of was Lin Mianmian, but she was a new acquaintance.
“Take your time thinking about it. It’s also fine if you can’t remember, saves me from getting jealous,” Jiang Zhi didn’t continue the topic.
Ji Fanghuai also felt that discussing it further might seem like she was praising herself, so she wisely returned to working on her short video.
On the weekend, Jiang Zhi went to Li Yiyi’s house.
Ji Fanghuai continued to research her videos. The feedback from short videos was the most direct, and Ji Fanghuai wanted to manage this account well, treating it as a life documentary for Xi Xi (West West).
Another month passed, and the weather grew colder.
While Ji Fanghuai focused on editing her short videos, Lin Mianmian finally escaped from the book “Spirit Coffin” and asked her out for a meal.
“Going out to eat with Mianmian doesn’t count as going out to play, right?” Ji Fanghuai checked in with Jiang Zhi.
She still felt a little uncomfortable, feeling like a child who had to report her whereabouts.
Jiang Zhi was still at the company. Hearing her, she said earnestly, “Am I putting too much pressure on you? I don’t stop you from going out because I want to restrict you, but because I’m worried something might happen to you. Wear warm clothes when you leave, remember your scarf, and be safe.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “Okay, see you tonight.”
After hanging up, Jiang Zhi stared at her phone in thought.
Her assistant asked, “Ms. Jiang?”
Jiang Zhi snapped out of it and said, “Nothing. Continue preparing for the meeting in the large conference room.”
Ji Fanghuai and Lin Mianmian met at a Japanese restaurant. First, they celebrated Lin Mianmian finally not having to draw those character designs, and then, as they chatted, Lin Mianmian asked, “What do you think of Jiang Zhi?”
“What do you mean, ‘what do I think’? Isn’t she your fiancée? How should I know?” Lin Mianmian was puzzled by the question.
Ji Fanghuai said with distress, “She was my fiancée initially, but at the time, I felt like I was doing a task, making it hard for me to truly invest my emotions. I felt like I was being pushed along. Now I feel like I can accept it. Many things prove that we have memories, and those memories are real. If they are all erased because of my amnesia, it would be too cruel to Jiang Zhi.”
“For a while, I only wanted to treat her as an older sister. She understands every problem and can give people direction.”
Lin Mianmian didn’t quite understand. “And now?”
What troubled Ji Fanghuai was the present. She said, “Now I feel like she’s more than just an older sister. It’s complicated.”
Lin Mianmian asked, “Have you fallen for her again?”
Ji Fanghuai quickly denied it. “No, not at all. I just think she’s weird, and I’m weird too because of her. I get incredibly nervous whenever she kisses me.”
“You’re still rejecting her?” Lin Mianmian thought they were already dating normally.
“She’s only kissed me twice since then, those quick pecks,” Ji Fanghuai said, conflicted. “But the feeling is very different, especially when she looks at me innocently after kissing me.”
It always made her feel guilty if she didn’t let Jiang Zhi continue kissing her.
Lin Mianmian said, “Actually, I think you can let go a little. The result is the same anyway; you don’t need to care too much about the process.”
Ji Fanghuai had no dating experience and was confused. “What result is the same?”
Lin Mianmian analyzed, “It means you’ll recover your memory sooner or later. Even if you don’t recover your memory, you’ll still fall for Jiang Zhi eventually. Otherwise, why would you keep the fiancée status?”
Ji Fanghuai actually found her point reasonable.
She had amnesia; logically speaking, she could separate from Jiang Zhi and didn’t need to be bound to her.
She said, “You mean I should break up with her?”
“No, no, I didn’t mean that.” Lin Mianmian didn’t want to be the one to suggest it. “Besides, you two get along very well. Don’t overthink it. The person involved is confused, but the observer is clear. I can see it from the outside.”
“Let me think first. If I were going to break up, I should have done it at the beginning. Now, not only am I reluctant, but it’s also unfair to Jiang Zhi,” Ji Fanghuai felt like a terrible person.
She was enjoying the conveniences Jiang Zhi provided while simultaneously not fulfilling the responsibilities of a girlfriend and not treating Jiang Zhi as one.
Ji Fanghuai lowered her head and sighed.
Lin Mianmian tried to compensate. “Just keep things as they are. Don’t think too much, and don’t think about breaking up. You should be thinking about how to live well, not about separating.”
Ji Fanghuai felt reassured. “You’re right.”
Lin Mianmian then asked, “Oh, right, are you free next Saturday?”
Ji Fanghuai pulled her thoughts back and said, “I’m very free.”
At home, she just edited videos. Jiang Zhi didn’t let her go to the coffee shop, saying that flu season was rampant in winter and it was safer at home.
Lin Mianmian took a moment to gather her thoughts before saying, “It’s my birthday next Saturday, and I’d like to invite you to go out and celebrate, just a normal meal and gathering.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “Sounds good.”
“That’s great. My mom said we could just eat at home, but I thought you might not feel comfortable at my house,” Lin Mianmian didn’t want to hold the party at home.
Ji Fanghuai agreed. “It is very warm at home, but it would be a bit restrictive. I don’t even know how to interact with elders.”
Thinking of this, she felt a little thankful that Jiang Zhi didn’t have elders, then instantly felt that her thought was wicked.
Moreover, Jiang Zhi did have a stepfather and stepmother—her step-parents—and although their relationship wasn’t good, they were still elders. Besides that, she surely had uncles and aunts.
Thinking of it this way, she did too.
Ji Fanghuai started to feel confused. It would actually be quite easy for her to find her relatives, but Jiang Zhi didn’t seem to have that intention.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Jiang Zhi.
“Have you finished eating? I’m just getting off work. Should I come and pick you up?” Jiang Zhi’s voice was soft and gentle, sounding particularly tender.
Ji Fanghuai said, “We’re almost done. I’ll send you the address.”
Since she started staying at home all day, her assistant had been transferred back to the company, and she had taken a taxi to get here today.
After sending the address, Ji Fanghuai looked through the glass door and saw umbrellas outside, realizing it was raining. They hadn’t brought an umbrella when they left, which explained why Jiang Zhi wanted to pick her up.
The weather was cold. When Jiang Zhi arrived, she was holding two umbrellas.
Jiang Zhi said, “Miss Lin, let me drop you off first.”
“The subway station is nearby. I can just walk there, no need to trouble you,” Lin Mianmian didn’t want to be a third wheel. “I just need to borrow one of your umbrellas.”
Jiang Zhi gave her an umbrella, and Lin Mianmian left first.
Ji Fanghuai asked Jiang Zhi, “What do you want to eat? Why don’t we eat before going back, so you didn’t make the trip for nothing.”
Jiang Zhi tightened her scarf and said, “Didn’t you just eat? Do you want to eat again?”
Ji Fanghuai felt embarrassed. “Not me. I meant you. I’ll just watch you eat. I’m already full.”
“Then let’s go for barbecue,” Jiang Zhi pointed to the barbecue restaurant across the street. The two of them shared one umbrella.
Ji Fanghuai touched Jiang Zhi’s hand and shivered slightly. “Your hand is so cold.”
Jiang Zhi hinted, “My coat doesn’t have pockets.”
Ji Fanghuai quickly tucked her hand into her own coat pocket. Then Jiang Zhi and she held hands inside the pocket. Ji Fanghuai felt it was odd but couldn’t bring herself to say anything.
The two walked towards the intersection across the street. Jiang Zhi’s umbrella was tilted almost entirely towards Ji Fanghuai’s side.
While waiting for the traffic light, Ji Fanghuai couldn’t help but say, “You’re so tired from work. I could have just taken a taxi home; you didn’t have to come all this way to pick me up.”
Jiang Zhi’s mouth curved up and she said, “Your sense of direction isn’t good. When you take a taxi, either you can’t find the driver or the driver can’t find you. It’s more convenient for me to pick you up.”
“How could that be? I can’t be that stupid.” Ji Fanghuai remembered her last taxi ride went smoothly. She suspected Jiang Zhi was making an excuse, but she was still happy to be picked up.
“You can be that stupid sometimes,” Jiang Zhi said as she entered a barbecue restaurant with her.
Since it was a spontaneous decision, they hadn’t made a reservation, so they sat in the main hall. It was crowded and very lively.
Ji Fanghuai was indeed prepared to watch Jiang Zhi eat, but slowly, it turned into… Jiang Zhi grilling meat for her.
And because she hadn’t planned to eat in the first place, Jiang Zhi ended up feeding her directly.
“I really am full,” Ji Fanghuai said, her face red. She felt like the child at the next table was looking at her. Being fed at her age was truly embarrassing.
Jiang Zhi thought for a moment and said, “Then let’s go home.”
Jiang Zhi hadn’t eaten much, but Ji Fanghuai had eaten two meals. She felt very bad.
She said, “Where is your car parked? Can we walk a bit more? I feel a little stuffed.”
Jiang Zhi held the umbrella and said, “It’s a little cold outside. How about we stroll around the nearby mall?”
Ji Fanghuai huddled her neck. It was indeed a bit cold. Jiang Zhi was wearing a trench coat with a pure white sweater underneath; she was much more resistant to the cold than Ji Fanghuai, who wore a down jacket as soon as she went out.
Wait, how could a trench coat not have pockets?
Ji Fanghuai didn’t answer, she just said, “You’re so annoying.”
“What did I do?” Jiang Zhi stopped, frowned slightly, and began to ponder.
As if to prove her point, Ji Fanghuai shoved both hands into the pockets on both sides of Jiang Zhi’s coat and said, “Your coat clearly has pockets, yet you insisted on putting your hand in my coat pocket and squeezing in with me.”
“That’s because I like your pocket,” Jiang Zhi, having been exposed, didn’t hide it anymore. She opened her arms and naturally embraced her. “I just like holding your hand, and I like being close to you.”
Ji Fanghuai was caught off guard by the hug, her head forced against Jiang Zhi’s chest, which was soft.
She could barely breathe and struggled, “Let go of me, we’re still outside.”
Jiang Zhi shielded them with the umbrella and whispered in her ear, “With the umbrella covering us, no one will see even if we’re up to no good.”
