After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 24
Jiang Zhi watched the person in her arms with difficulty, her ears hidden under her hair quietly turning red. Yet, Ji Fanghuai was restless, twisting and turning in her embrace.
Biting her lip, Jiang Zhi muffled, “Be good.”
Ji Fanghuai stopped at once upon hearing this, frowning and saying, “It hurts.”
The romantic thoughts in Jiang Zhi’s mind instantly vanished. She nervously asked, “Where does it hurt?”
“Thirsty, want to sleep.” Ji Fanghuai was truly drunk, speaking incoherently.
“Okay.” Jiang Zhi carried Ji Fanghuai onto the bed, gently and carefully taking off her clothes. She saw a red swelling on her elbow, likely from bumping into the coffee table.
Naked, Ji Fanghuai was uncomfortable and wiggled on the bed like a large worm.
Jiang Zhi affectionately kissed her cheek, covered her with a blanket, and got up to pour water. After feeding her the water, she exerted great effort to put a nightgown on her. Only then did Ji Fanghuai settle down to sleep.
When Ji Fanghuai woke up, a stark white scene met her eyes.
She was actually in Jiang Zhi’s arms? And she had actively climbed onto Jiang Zhi, her limbs clinging to Jiang Zhi like she was climbing a tree.
Ji Fanghuai: “!!!”
She wanted to quietly slip out, but found it impossible, as Jiang Zhi had already opened her eyes, watching her with a deep gaze.
Ji Fanghuai hastily explained, “I didn’t mean to.”
Jiang Zhi’s voice was lazy, “I know.”
“It’s good that you know.” Eager to distance herself, Ji Fanghuai frantically wriggled out of Jiang Zhi’s arms, only to realize she was only wearing a nightgown.
She looked at Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi smiled innocently, saying, “Don’t worry, I closed my eyes when I helped you change. I didn’t see anything. The clothes you took off are on the sofa, I didn’t mess with them.”
Ji Fanghuai looked up. Her clothes were indeed on the two-seater sofa at the foot of the bed, with a light green bra conspicuously placed on top, practically blinding her.
Ji Fanghuai was unbearably embarrassed, unsure how to face Jiang Zhi, especially as her memories returned.
She felt like she had even flirted with Jiang Zhi yesterday?
Ji Fanghuai inwardly roared. Just then, her stomach growled.
Jiang Zhi straightened her collar, sat up, and said, “Get up and eat breakfast first. You only drank wine and didn’t eat yesterday.”
Ji Fanghuai said listlessly, “I’ll sleep a bit longer.”
She immediately lay down and feigned sleep, not wanting to talk to Jiang Zhi for the moment, and uncertain how to face her.
Jiang Zhi’s lips curled up, and she said, “Alright, I’ll call you when the food is ready.”
Ji Fanghuai didn’t reply, self-hypnotizing that she was asleep. Hearing Jiang Zhi leave the bedroom, she pulled the blanket completely over her head, then realized the bed smelled strongly of alcohol.
She was covered in alcohol scent, yet she had clung to Jiang Zhi all night.
Ji Fanghuai didn’t know how Jiang Zhi could stand it, but she couldn’t. She gave up on sleeping and went to take a shower.
Her hair had grown to around her earlobes, making it very easy to dry. Ji Fanghuai had no reason to keep sleeping, so she left the bedroom, awkwardly petting the cat on the sofa, hoping Jiang Zhi would spontaneously develop amnesia.
“Yesterday…” Jiang Zhi deliberately left the sentence incomplete.
Ji Fanghuai quickly interjected, “What happened yesterday was an accident, I just explained it.”
“Do you remember what you did yesterday?” Jiang Zhi raised an eyebrow, her gaze cool yet naturally charming.
Ji Fanghuai’s face felt hot, “I remember.”
It was just burying her face in her chest, which was indeed soft and comfortable.
“It seems you don’t remember everything,” Jiang Zhi said leisurely.
Ji Fanghuai began to feel confused.
Did she do something else yesterday?
She looked at Jiang Zhi, only feeling that Jiang Zhi was as warm as the spring sun today, having thawed considerably.
“What else did I do?” Ji Fanghuai anxiously rubbed the cat. Xixi meowed in her arms.
Her memory of last night was hazy. She only remembered feeling very wronged and burying her face in Jiang Zhi’s chest. Her gaze involuntarily drifted to Jiang Zhi’s front, then quickly shifted back.
Jiang Zhi pursed her lips and said seriously, “Let’s eat. I was just teasing you. I would never do anything when you’re not sober, and a drunk person like you couldn’t do anything anyway.”
So, nothing happened last night?
Ji Fanghuai was relieved, but also blamed Jiang Zhi for deliberately scaring her. The old Jiang Zhi would never have done that.
Jiang Zhi casually asked, “Did you have any new insights from going to the school?”
Ji Fanghuai felt sad, thinking of how she had fussed about and achieved nothing. She felt like a clown constantly flailing around pointlessly.
Jiang Zhi had told her to relax and let nature take its course, but she hadn’t believed it, thinking she could find some memories. Unfortunately, she failed, and now she felt foolish.
Ji Fanghuai had a feeling of suffering the consequences of not listening to advice, and whispered, “No.”
Jiang Zhi thought for a moment and said, “Perhaps you could try another method.”
“What method?” Although Ji Fanghuai held little hope, she was still excited, and could clearly feel that Jiang Zhi genuinely wasn’t planning to stop her.
Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes, her tone slightly melancholic, and said, “The person closest to you is right here. What method do you think?”
Ji Fanghuai was startled, “Speak clearly.”
Otherwise, she might get the wrong idea.
Jiang Zhi said plainly, “Let’s do all the things we used to do together again.”
“Isn’t that inappropriate?” Ji Fanghuai demurred.
The things they used to do definitely included more than just mundane daily life, such as their intimate life in bed.
Jiang Zhi was a little displeased, saying, “The person closest to you is right here, yet you choose to take a detour. What are you avoiding? Are you afraid of discovering that you once loved me, and then feeling even more guilty about what you’re doing now?”
“I…” Ji Fanghuai was speechless.
She had initially sought Jiang Zhi’s help. It was Jiang Zhi who first disagreed with her trying to regain her memory, saying she was afraid of stimulating her. Now, Jiang Zhi was suggesting they do the things they used to do.
Jiang Zhi softened her tone, and admitted, “I know you felt very wronged by my sudden coldness towards you.”
Ji Fanghuai nodded. She did feel very wronged.
“But my attitude towards you remains the same. You are my fiancée. Whether you have your memory or not, I respect your wishes. If you really want to remember, I will fully cooperate.”
Ji Fanghuai was puzzled, “Then why didn’t you just tell me directly?”
Although she enjoyed the pleasure of slowly recovering her memories herself, time had worn down her enthusiasm. She was now eager to just know the answer.
“That’s different. I told you a long time ago that I am your fiancée, but you didn’t believe it at all. You have been suspicious of me from beginning to end. If it weren’t for the various signs in life indicating that we were once intimate, you would probably have suspected I was lying to you long ago.”
Jiang Zhi’s tone was self-mocking, “What do you think I’m after?”
Ji Fanghuai froze. So Jiang Zhi knew everything. She thought she had hidden it well.
She said a little awkwardly, “If I want to try, how will you cooperate with me?”
Jiang Zhi said, “Just as I said before, let’s do all the things we used to do again. That’s better than going to one unfamiliar place after another trying to find a sense of familiarity.”
“How do we do that?” Ji Fanghuai still felt uncertain.
Jiang Zhi said expressionlessly, “I promise I will absolutely not get intimate with you without your consent.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Ji Fanghuai thought that if intimacy could restore her memory, she would have recovered it long ago.
She said, “I want to go to the hospital first. Maybe there’s been a breakthrough.”
Jiang Zhi agreed, “Alright.”
The result of the hospital check-up was that everything was normal. If it wasn’t severely affecting her life, she didn’t need to worry too much about her memory. Maintaining a positive and optimistic attitude was the most important rule for maintaining health.
Having said a lot that was useless, Ji Fanghuai decided to follow Jiang Zhi’s suggestion, saying, “You make the arrangements.”
“First, we’ll go to the cinema.” Jiang Zhi had specially made a list for this.
Ji Fanghuai couldn’t see the list due to her height, and didn’t know what else was on it. She asked, “Isn’t this a date?”
“Yes,” Jiang Zhi didn’t deny it.
Ji Fanghuai felt strange. Walking into the cinema, she found that it was just the two of them.
Jiang Zhi explained, “This is a movie from three years ago. The film industry is becoming increasingly commercialized now, and old movies are rarely screened, so I booked the whole theatre.”
Ji Fanghuai thought about it. She would turn twenty-six after her birthday in August. Three years ago would have been less than a year after she graduated, which was around the time Jiang Zhi and she started dating.
She had expected a romantic film, but it turned out to be a Republic of China-era same-sex romance.
At that time, falling in love with the same sex was truly considered a horror, and coupled with the limitations of the historical context, the romance was deeply moving and the plot was heartbreaking.
Ji Fanghuai felt the movie was familiar. She could even guess the plot’s progression, and it was indeed very emotional and tear-inducing.
Ji Fanghuai ate popcorn while her eyes were watery.
Jiang Zhi very naturally handed her tissues, knowing exactly at which point in the plot to hand them over.
“Thank you.” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want Jiang Zhi to think she was easily moved to tears.
Jiang Zhi said indifferently, “You were the same last time, crying secretly.”
Caught red-handed, Ji Fanghuai didn’t want to talk to Jiang Zhi, and focused entirely on the plot. The ending was a bittersweet tragedy with a glimmer of hope.
She asked, “Why did we watch such a heartbreaking movie?”
“Because the tragedy leaves a deep impression. You’re easily moved to tears, emotional, and you get carried away easily, which makes it easier to take advantage of the opportunity,” Jiang Zhi said seriously.
“Did you confess your love like this back then?”
Ji Fanghuai guessed she must have immediately agreed, given that she already had a good impression of Jiang Zhi.
“Yes.” Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes, a shadow beneath her eyelids, thinking, It’s a shame it didn’t work.
Leaving the cinema, Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi discussed the plot. Ji Fanghuai said, “I still don’t quite understand why the female lead lied to the second female lead? Giving hope only to shatter it—don’t you think that’s cruel?”
In the movie, the female lead left a letter before her death, asking the second female lead to wait for her return, giving her hope. But this hope was like a bubble, unable to withstand any external force, and would burst with a light poke.
Jiang Zhi said, “Because the second female lead knew she was being lied to all along, she just willingly enjoyed being deceived.”
Ji Fanghuai half-understood, not quite grasping what love was like, to make someone prefer to live in a dream they created and not wake up.
If it were her, she would choose to face the truth.
Ji Fanghuai asked, “What do we usually do after watching a movie?”
“You like to play claw machines.”
Jiang Zhi led Ji Fanghuai to a nearby arcade, bought a basket of tokens, and let Ji Fanghuai go first.
Ji Fanghuai felt a sense of familiarity, as if she had experienced it in a dream. It seemed she had played claw machines here with Jiang Zhi before.
Ji Fanghuai was secretly happy, the effect was indeed better than going to places like home, but she didn’t dare to tell Jiang Zhi, afraid of being happy for nothing.
Ji Fanghuai inserted a token and operated the claw machine fiercely, yet failed to catch a single prize. Jiang Zhi, on the other hand, was skilled, catching one with every try.
“Your hand is so steady. My right hand isn’t nimble, otherwise, I could catch one too.”
Ji Fanghuai’s right hand was injured when she woke up. Daily life was fine, but she felt a bit strained doing finer movements.
However, playing the claw machine wasn’t exactly a fine movement. She was just making excuses for not catching anything.
She always felt that the claw machine’s grabber wasn’t nimble either, just like the hand of an aunt serving food in a cafeteria, always involuntarily shaking.
Jiang Zhi looked up at Ji Fanghuai’s hand, then at her own, and a pleasant smile curved her lips.
Ji Fanghuai found Jiang Zhi’s look inexplicable.
She felt like Jiang Zhi was saying, you won’t have a chance to use your right hand anyway.
