After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 23
Ji Fanghuai threw down a harsh challenge, but Jiang Zhi just smiled without speaking.
Ji Fanghuai inexplicably felt that this place was more comfortable than her home in A City. The décor there was almost identical to this one, as if it had been copied from here.
Ji Fanghuai wanted to stay here for a while, hoping for some unexpected discovery, but if she was going to settle in, the first thing to solve was the dining problem.
Ji Fanghuai took out her phone to order takeout. As she was about to pay, she couldn’t help but ask Jiang Zhi, “Do you want me to order a portion for you?”
She couldn’t really treat Jiang Zhi like a transparent person.
Jiang Zhi spoke like she was giving a science lesson: “Takeout isn’t hygienic. To save time and earn money, many vendors package things poorly. Even brick-and-mortar restaurants that support self-pickup often use excessive oil and salt to enhance the flavor. Although your surgery was a long time ago, you still can’t eat ‘hot’ foods, or avoid items like Sichuan peppercorns and other restricted foods.”
Jiang Zhi’s words made Ji Fanghuai stop her payment.
After the scab on her brow bone fell off, there was still a small red mark. Eating overly strong flavors could deepen the mark, affecting her features, and everyone cares about their appearance.
Ji Fanghuai completely gave up the idea of ordering takeout.
She was wondering if she should go out to find a restaurant when she saw Jiang Zhi pick up a call on her phone and then say, “My takeout has arrived.”
Ji Fanghuai glared at Jiang Zhi, annoyed, and said, “You…”
Jiang Zhi spread her hands and said, “I didn’t tell you not to order.”
Ji Fanghuai was furious. If this continued, she would get breast hyperplasia from anger sooner or later. She decided to go downstairs herself to eat later, and she wouldn’t speak to Jiang Zhi for the next few days.
However, the things Jiang Zhi bought were all vegetables and fruit.
Ji Fanghuai kept quiet. Jiang Zhi went to the kitchen to wash the vegetables, and knowing Jiang Zhi would surely cook her own portion, she stood by the side. Jiang Zhi, uncharacteristically, didn’t chase her out.
“I’ll wash the vegetables, you can cut them,” Ji Fanghuai suggested.
“Alright,” Jiang Zhi’s lips curled into a slight smile.
Ji Fanghuai felt a sense of involvement. She used to be kept on a pedestal, with Jiang Zhi forbidding her from doing anything, practically wanting to hold her in her mouth. Now, Jiang Zhi provoked her every day, yet she actually felt life was more real than before.
Ji Fanghuai began to suspect she had a masochistic tendency.
Jiang Zhi was a good cook, and the kitchen was fully stocked with seasonings. The resulting dishes were colorful, fragrant, and flavorful. Even plain bok choy smelled delicious, and there were also Coke chicken wings.
Ji Fanghuai ate for a bit, then frowned and stopped moving her chopsticks.
“Not tasty?” Jiang Zhi furrowed her brows.
“It’s okay,” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want to praise Jiang Zhi. Then, seeing Jiang Zhi continue to stare at her, she had to admit, “The chicken got stuck in my teeth.”
Jiang Zhi paused and said, “Then eat slower.”
“Mmm,” Ji Fanghuai’s face felt a little warm.
Ji Fanghuai noticed that Jiang Zhi was also great at washing pots and dishes. If she was a kitchen killer, then Jiang Zhi was the kitchen’s best banner holder, proficient in everything. Currently, it seemed there was nothing Jiang Zhi couldn’t do, except maybe faint at the sight of blood.
Because she couldn’t sleep well in a new bed, they only tidied one room. Ji Fanghuai resigned herself to sleeping in the same bed as Jiang Zhi.
In the middle of the night, Ji Fanghuai vaguely felt a gaze on her face. She opened her eyes, and indeed, it was Jiang Zhi staring at her. She quickly pulled the covers up and said, “What are you doing?”
“Nothing, go back to sleep,” Jiang Zhi’s voice held a tenderness that she hadn’t managed to hide in time.
Ji Fanghuai looked again, and Jiang Zhi had already turned her head and gone to sleep. She must have misheard.
This trip yielded nothing.
Ji Fanghuai finally understood what Jiang Zhi meant by “it’s not that easy to recover your memory.”
Staying here only gave her a sense of comfort and familiarity, nothing else. Moreover, while staying here, Jiang Zhi had to buy groceries and cook, and even the occasional trip to the supermarket was unfamiliar.
Ji Fanghuai didn’t mention leaving, and Jiang Zhi didn’t suggest going either, so she had to take the initiative to propose returning. They then went back home, and Jiang Zhi said, “You kept saying I restricted your social circle before.”
Ji Fanghuai corrected her: “I know that was a misunderstanding. I meant you didn’t let me contact other people.”
Jiang Zhi said, “It doesn’t matter. Now you have a friend who wants to see you. It’s up to you whether you meet them or not. I’m not familiar with that person.”
“My friend?” Ji Fanghuai was excited.
“Yes, but you need to be clear: the people who still remember you at this juncture are either your true friends or they have ulterior motives. As far as I know, your true friends are very few,” Jiang Zhi kindly reminded her.
“Oh,” Although Jiang Zhi talked around the subject a lot, Ji Fanghuai was still very happy.
So, arguing had this effect. Before, no matter how much she pestered, Jiang Zhi wouldn’t let her contact friends.
Jiang Zhi gave her an unreadable look, as if saying: your fiancée is here, and you’re not excited, but you’re very excited about an irrelevant friend.
Ji Fanghuai arranged to meet the friend, and only realized when they met that it was a man.
The man said, “Fanghuai, long time no see.”
Ji Fanghuai had assumed her friend was a woman when she left home, and she suddenly didn’t know how to interact, so she could only offer her friendliest smile and say, “Hello.”
After the man introduced himself, he said, “I heard you got engaged. I’m very happy for you.”
Ji Fanghuai hadn’t quite caught his name but smiled cordially again and said, “Thank you.”
The man became reserved and said, “It was my past folly, me being a frog trying to eat a swan. You and Jiang Zhi are a match made in heaven. I’ve decided to put an end to my improper thoughts.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai hadn’t expected this turn of events.
She looked at Jiang Zhi next to her, but Jiang Zhi just raised an eyebrow, looking completely unconcerned.
After a conversation with the man, Ji Fanghuai surprisingly felt more comfortable getting along with Jiang Zhi’s friends. Even Jin Lin, who saw her as a love rival and was subtly aggressive in every sentence, was more comfortable than this so-called friend.
“He wouldn’t be an actor you specially hired, would he?” Ji Fanghuai speculated. “Or maybe he was just threatened by you.”
“Is that how you see me?” Jiang Zhi’s face was cold.
Ji Fanghuai said, “Someone like him isn’t really a friend; at best, he’s a pursuer.”
“I said he might have ulterior motives,” Jiang Zhi said expressionlessly. “Don’t worry, I will meet any request you have, so you won’t think I’m lying to you and dismissing our years of relationship as nothing.”
It’s as if I’m the one who’s suffering, Ji Fanghuai muttered inwardly. She seized the opportunity to propose a new request: “Then I want to go to the university.”
Otherwise, she had no place to start and could only hope to recover her memories.
Ji Fanghuai added, “I want to go by myself.”
Jiang Zhi frowned but agreed.
Ji Fanghuai bought a plane ticket and happily arrived at the university campus, but she didn’t get a single memory-related clue because she didn’t even remember which building her dorm was in, and she didn’t know anyone. The school had changed drastically over the years, and she even needed navigation to find her way out.
Ji Fanghuai regretted it. She should have kept Wu Lili’s number. She had no choice but to call Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi said patiently, “I’m not sure either. You were the one who told me not to follow you.”
Ji Fanghuai felt that she had become accustomed to the convenience Jiang Zhi provided, making it a habit, but wasn’t all of this because Jiang Zhi said they were a couple?
Humans are probably good at shifting blame. After blaming the problem on Jiang Zhi, Ji Fanghuai lost interest and went home to lie down.
“How was the effect?” Xin Ling poked Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes and said, “It’s alright. She seems more interesting like this. She was supposed to be like this; I just kept her bound by the title of fiancée.”
Xin Ling agreed: “You were never the gentle and mild-mannered type anyway. You’ve always been cold, only warming up a bit in front of Ji Fanghuai. I was also uncomfortable seeing you suddenly ‘revive’ a few days ago.”
Jiang Zhi shot her a sharp look but didn’t deny it.
Ji Fanghuai was quite discouraged after returning from the university, as she realized that recovering her memory wouldn’t be easy. She had been busy for nothing lately. Perhaps if Jiang Zhi hadn’t taken her in, she wouldn’t even have a place to live.
In the end, she still had to be thankful they were engaged.
No one was home, only Xixi, the fat cat.
Ji Fanghuai always had a direction before and firmly believed that she could regain a little bit of memory by going to familiar places, as it was only ordinary amnesia.
But…
Ji Fanghuai felt lost about the future. Seeing red wine at home, she started drinking.
The more she drank, the sadder she felt, thinking that she knew nothing, and Jiang Zhi was even arguing with her.
She couldn’t remember their relationship, only feeling like she suddenly had a fiancée. To avoid upsetting Jiang Zhi and to not feel guilty, she had always indulged Jiang Zhi’s closeness, and she had no reason to refuse.
Because she couldn’t find a way to vent, Ji Fanghuai blamed all her problems on Jiang Zhi. It must be that their relationship wasn’t deep, otherwise, how could she not even remember Jiang Zhi?
In those TV drama amnesia tropes, usually everyone else can be forgotten, but never the lover.
When Jiang Zhi returned home, the living room was dark, and the light wasn’t on. She turned on the light and saw this scene.
Ji Fanghuai was tipsy, sitting on the rug talking to the cat. There were two glasses of red wine on the coffee table. One was for herself, and the other… was clearly for Xixi.
Jiang Zhi looked again and saw that the cat food was also mixed with red wine.
“Fanghuai,” Jiang Zhi helped Ji Fanghuai up from the rug and settled her properly on the sofa.
“Jiang Zhi?” Ji Fanghuai mumbled.
“It’s me,” Jiang Zhi gently hugged her. She reeked of alcohol. Who knew how much she had drunk? Her tolerance was already poor; she was truly both dramatic and cute.
Jiang Zhi casually looked around. There were two red wine bottles rolling on the floor.
“You drank two bottles?”
Jiang Zhi tried to talk to Ji Fanghuai, but Ji Fanghuai just slurred, “It’s all your fault.”
Jiang Zhi paused, then relaxed, and said dotingly, “My fault.”
Ji Fanghuai grinned, frowned, and said, “Good that you know. Wouldn’t it be nice to be sisters? Why did you have to keep kissing and sticking your tongue out? I’m not used to it.”
Jiang Zhi was stunned for a moment, then relaxed again and said indulgently, “Next time, no kissing and sticking my tongue out. I’ll listen to you for everything. Whatever you say, we’ll do. If you want to call me ‘sister,’ you can call me ‘sister.’ I’ll indulge you, okay?”
“Okay, you said it,” Ji Fanghuai said happily. She somehow missed this embrace.
She had been feeling so wronged lately.
Being completely drunk, her grievances poured out like a flood breaking a dam. Ji Fanghuai couldn’t help but complain in Jiang Zhi’s arms: “You were the one who was nice to me first, said I was your fiancée, and constantly asked about my well-being. I got used to it, and now you’re suddenly cold to me and calling me ‘Miss Ji.’ Jiang Zhi, are you sick?”
Jiang Zhi felt sorry for her and said, “Is the difference that big?”
“Yes.”
Jiang Zhi was about to offer comfort.
Ji Fanghuai moved her head and said, “Your chest is so big.”
