After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 11
Living together was generally pleasant, but Jiang Zhi was genuinely busy. Even after asking Xin Ling to go to the company, she still kept her laptop close and even held video conferences.
Ji Fanghuai almost wanted her to just go to work; she herself was bored, spending her days reading in the study. However, after reading for less than an hour, Jiang Zhi would remind her to take a break.
Perhaps out of guilt for constantly restricting her, Jiang Zhi proactively suggested, “We’ll go see Mom and Dad tomorrow.”
Ji Fanghuai paused, realizing she meant her parents, and said, “Okay.”
Ji Fanghuai took her motion sickness medicine in advance. As soon as they got in the car, Jiang Zhi told her to close her eyes and sleep, then pulled her into her arms. Ji Fanghuai had grown used to being held and didn’t object.
The car slowly drove towards a cemetery.
The cemetery was full of gravestones. Although Ji Fanghuai was there to visit her parents, because she had forgotten them, there was no emotion in her mind; it was as if she were visiting strangers.
Jiang Zhi and Ji Fanghuai entered the cemetery and walked to a tombstone. Ji Fanghuai looked at the black and white photo on it.
“Are these my parents?”
Ji Fanghuai asked with a sense of unreality.
She was just bewildered, seemingly unable to muster even a hint of sadness. The photo on the tombstone was familiar, but she felt it wasn’t real.
“Yes, they are,” Jiang Zhi said, bowing before placing flowers.
Ji Fanghuai asked blankly, “How did they pass away?”
“They died in a car accident two years ago. It was an accidental traffic incident,” Jiang Zhi said, her eyes slightly cold but her voice gentle. “It was caused by brake failure.”
Ji Fanghuai listened quietly.
Yet, none of it seemed to concern her. She had no memory and couldn’t empathize or feel sad.
Ji Fanghuai realized she felt like a stranger, standing there ridiculous. She had no memory and thus no standing.
Ji Fanghuai said, “Let’s go back.”
On the way back, Ji Fanghuai couldn’t help but ask, “Am I very cold-blooded? I don’t seem to be able to feel sad. I saw Mom and Dad’s tombstone, but I couldn’t feel sad.”
She felt ridiculous just saying it.
Jiang Zhi comforted her: “You’re not cold-blooded at all. Xixi was a tiny, skinny kitten you picked up at the coffee shop, and now she’s a big cat. You can’t feel sad now because you already grieved before.”
“Is that so?” Ji Fanghuai looked out the car window at the fast-moving scenery, felt dizzy, and quickly withdrew her gaze.
“Don’t look outside.” Jiang Zhi held her gently. “Just close your eyes.”
Just close your eyes.
This phrase repeated in her mind daily, but closing her eyes never made things better.
Ji Fanghuai felt shameful; her inability to feel sad when visiting her parents felt like the last straw.
Before, when she knew she had amnesia, she only wanted to quickly return to familiar people. But now, standing before her parents’ tombstone, she couldn’t even shed a tear.
“Can my memory recover?” Ji Fanghuai suddenly asked.
She didn’t want to be a person without a past anymore.
Jiang Zhi paused, then said, “I don’t know.”
“Even you don’t know?” Ji Fanghuai had expected Jiang Zhi to comfort her as usual, assuring her that she would eventually recover her memory, and that modern medicine was so advanced that no medical problem was unsolvable.
Yet, even Jiang Zhi said she didn’t know.
Jiang Zhi was startled. She looked into Ji Fanghuai’s eyes and seriously said, “Didn’t we agree to start over?”
“But I don’t have memories. Do you know what it feels like to have no memory? It’s foggy, as if my whole life is a blank slate,” Ji Fanghuai struggled to describe the feeling.
It was like waking up and forgetting what she did yesterday, but she had forgotten everything from the past twenty-five years.
Jiang Zhi hugged her lovingly, her eyes holding an ambiguous meaning, as if after a long struggle, she said, “Let’s go for a follow-up check-up.”
The result of the follow-up check-up was good, but when memory recovery was mentioned, the doctor said there was no need to pursue memory if it didn’t affect daily life, as her current situation was already a miracle, suggesting she had survived a great disaster and would be blessed with good fortune.
If she insisted on recovering her memory, it would require mandatory intervention by a medical team, which carried various risks and was unfriendly to the brain nerves.
“Miss Ji, don’t you consider your fiancée’s feelings? We have no successful precedents for forcibly intervening to recover memories.”
This question was a fatal blow. Ji Fanghuai understood she had to let go of the idea.
“Fanghuai, let’s just let nature take its course. Today you have yesterday’s memories, and yesterday you had the day before’s memories. Slowly, you’ll accumulate many memories,” Jiang Zhi said, sounding seductive.
Ji Fanghuai replied, “Mhm.”
After returning from the follow-up, Ji Fanghuai remained moody. This was the first time she had reacted pessimistically to her amnesia.
Jiang Zhi watched her constantly; afraid she might hurt herself or have dark thoughts.
“I’m fine. I just got stuck in a rut for a moment,” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want Jiang Zhi to focus all her attention on her.
Jiang Zhi worriedly said, “Tell me if you feel uncomfortable anywhere. You can ask me anything.”
“Okay.” Ji Fanghuai returned to her ‘slacker’ life, but this time it was a ‘slacker’ life with a goal.
She didn’t want to turn over a new leaf, but she wanted to find a sense of familiarity in daily life.
The doctor said the safest way to recover memory was to let nature take its course; maybe she’d wake up one day and it would be back.
“Are you going out today?” Ji Fanghuai asked.
Jiang Zhi seemed to have been worried she might have an outburst and had put off work to spend several days with her. Today, she was dressed formally, ready to leave.
Jiang Zhi nodded and said, “My cousin introduced a lawyer who scheduled a meeting with me. Don’t wander around at home. Xixi’s cat food is in the cupboard.”
Ji Fanghuai noted it all down. She suddenly thought of something and asked, “Did your cousin and I have a conflict?”
Jiang Zhi hesitated, then shook her head and said, “No.”
“But my cousin seems not to like me,” Ji Fanghuai still felt that Shen Jing was particularly cold towards her, almost targeting her.
Jiang Zhi dismissively said, “That’s her problem, it has nothing to do with you.”
Ji Fanghuai then confirmed that they did have a conflict. Jiang Zhi went to meet the lawyer, and Ji Fanghuai stayed home to watch the cat. Aunt Chu was still cleaning. Ji Fanghuai went to the kitchen to take a look.
Jiang Zhi said she couldn’t cook, but Ji Fanghuai thought cooking was simple; it was just chopping vegetables, stir-frying, and adding seasonings.
“Miss Ji, please don’t touch anything,” Aunt Chu said in alarm.
“I’m just looking.” Ji Fanghuai thought, since Jiang Zhi wasn’t home, she hadn’t even worn a hat, and the scar lines were visible in the middle of her finger-length hair.
Aunt Chu said, “Your head injury is severe, and it’s not suitable for you to be near cooking oil fumes. It’s better not to come to the kitchen.”
Ji Fanghuai had no choice but to leave the kitchen and stood by the door, chatting with Aunt Chu. “We just finished lunch, and you’re already preparing dinner?”
Aunt Chu said while busy, “Some ingredients need to be soaked in advance. Miss Sun said to strictly control the portions. I used to be a chef in a hotel. We were cooking and preparing to cook all day long, so I’m used to it.”
Ji Fanghuai watched with interest, then thoughtfully asked, “Aunt Chu, how long have you been working here?”
“Two years.”
“Then do you remember how Jiang Zhi and I used to get along?” Ji Fanghuai wanted to know how others saw their relationship.
Was it like now, or was it different? To be honest, she still didn’t know how to interact with Jiang Zhi.
“This… Jiang Zhi wasn’t as domestic before. She was rarely home, almost always at the company. At that time, I thought I was going to lose my job. Ever since you went…”
Aunt Chu suddenly stopped there and said, “It’s about the same as now.”
“How could it be the same as now?” Ji Fanghuai was puzzled.
Did their way of getting along remain the same regardless of her amnesia?
“Miss Ji, I need to get back to cooking,” Aunt Chu said, refusing to say more.
Ji Fanghuai had no choice but to go back to playing with the cat. Fortunately, Jiang Zhi returned relatively quickly; Ji Fanghuai was practically turning moldy.
The two began chatting in the bedroom.
“How did the talk go?”
“Just clarifying the current situation.” Jiang Zhi took off her jacket. “The perpetrator’s family is of average means; their apartment is rented, and they have a young child in kindergarten. They want an out-of-court settlement. We are seeking maximum compensation and a harsher penalty.”
Ji Fanghuai asked, “Was it in our community?”
Jiang Zhi paused, then said, “It was B-City’s Biyang Community.”
“Why did I go there?” Ji Fanghuai thought she was injured in her own city.
Jiang Zhi hesitated for a moment, ran her hand through her hair, and showed a remorseful expression, saying, “We had a fight then, and you were angry with me, so you went back to B-City alone.”
Only then did Ji Fanghuai realize she also owned property. However, she truly couldn’t imagine arguing with Jiang Zhi and asked, “Why did we fight?”
Jiang Zhi pointed suggestively at the bed.
Ji Fanghuai looked bewildered. “It had something to do with the bed?”
Jiang Zhi smiled slightly: “It had something to do with bedroom activities.”
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
