- Chapter 9 - Staying Overnight
888 carefully pondered the situations that might trigger the blocking state.
Three seconds later, 888 shut down in frustration.
The utterly deranged host must have done something unspeakable to the female lead otherwise, with the host’s IQ, how could they possibly have noticed the blocking state?
Unfortunately, no matter what 888 replays in its mind now, it’s useless. After all, it’s been locked in the “dark room.”
After eating and drinking to her heart’s content, Fang Qingying sprawled lazily on the sofa, not moving an inch, even rolling over to sleep.
The one who suffered was Gu Shengxiao, who had to carry her to her own room, remove the obstructive items, feed her hangover soup, and then sleep on the small sofa in the living room with a blanket.
Though she really wanted to share the room with Fang Qingying, Gu Shengxiao knew her self-control wasn’t that strong.
More than that, she was afraid Fang Qingying might disappear again, just like last time, vanishing inexplicably, as if she had become a completely different person.
Not only did she not recognize Gu Shengxiao, but she also treated her with hostility. And worst of all… she had the audacity to fall for that scumbag Yun Yifan!
Absolutely unforgivable.
It was easy to imagine how excited Gu Shengxiao was when she saw Fang Qingying this time.
After taking a shower, Gu Shengxiao lay in bed in her pajamas, thinking things over as she drifted off to sleep.
She hoped that when she woke up, Fang Qingying would still be the same Fang Qingying not that arrogant little girl from before.
…
Early in the morning, Fang Qingying was jolted awake by her phone ringing. Half-asleep, she fumbled around for her phone.
After groping around for a while, she finally found it on the nightstand. Without even checking the caller ID, she swiped to answer.
“Hello?”
Her voice was hoarse from sleep as she irritably rubbed her hair, vaguely aware of a headache.
“Tell me, where are you?”
The voice on the other end instantly snapped Fang Qingying awake.
Her eyes flew open as she glanced at the caller ID, it was Shen Lixie calling.
Shen Lixie was asking where she was?
She seemed to be at Gu Shengxiao’s place, and by the looks of it, she had even taken over her bed.
“Don’t stay silent. If I have to track you down myself, you’ll face the consequences.”
Shen Lixie waited for a response, but after a long silence, his anger flared.
First, she had left in someone else’s car yesterday afternoon without even a phone call. If Director Liu hadn’t called, he would have gone mad searching for her.
And now, she had escalated things, staying out all night.
“I stayed at a friend’s place,” Fang Qingying replied, biting her lip with a hint of guilt.
She and Gu Shengxiao were good friends, right? Though they hadn’t known each other long, Gu Shengxiao was definitely a good person!
“Don’t tell me you went to that so-called ‘bestie’ of yours again?” Shen Lixie sounded like he was bracing for disaster, terrified that Fang Qingying, who had finally cleared her head might revert to her old foolish self.
“Do I only have her as a friend?” Fang Qingying retorted.
Who exactly was this “bestie”? Fang Qingying wasn’t sure. She had a vague impression, but she’d need to see the person to remember.
“…Other than her, do you have any other friends?”
After a long silence, Shen Lixie on the other end finally shattered Fang Qingying’s illusion.
With Fang Qingying’s waterlogged brain, a little provocation from her so-called “bestie” was enough to make her even detest her own brother Fang Qingyu to the point of wanting him out of her sight, let alone the friends she made?
If even her own brother got such treatment, imagine how much worse it would be for others.
“I’m telling you, I really do have one!” Fang Qingying immediately puffed up with confidence upon hearing this. “My friend is Gu Shengxiao.”
“Sweetheart, let’s not daydream, okay? Just tell Brother Shen where you are, and I’ll come pick you up.”
Shen Lixie spoke with a tone of exasperation, deliberately using the childhood nickname he had for Fang Qingying in hopes of bringing her back to reality.
“What do you mean? Why can’t Gu Shengxiao and I be friends?”
“Sweetheart, do you really want me to spell it out for you? Fine. Do you remember how you pushed that little girl down when you were kids?”
“Do you remember how you declared that if Gu Shengxiao dared to compete with you for Yun Yifan, you’d beat her up?”
“Do you remember how you bullied her so badly she avoided you for three whole years?”
Shen Lixie sighed deeply as he recounted these memories. Listing them out like this, it seemed their little Fang Qingying had been tormenting the actress Gu all along.
“And another thing, sweetheart. Gu Shengxiao is two years younger than you. She’s only 20 and already a double-award-winning actress, while you’re 22 and still a small-time celebrity getting roasted online. Why do you always have to pick on her?”
“Didn’t you take this drama role just because Gu Shengxiao is the lead actress?”
Listening to Shen Lixie’s words, Fang Qingying felt utterly bewildered. Had the original owner of this body really done all that? Why hadn’t she inherited any of these memories?
And another thing wasn’t Gu Shengxiao’s temper way too good? After being bullied like that by the original owner, she was still willing to be close to her. Was this the so-called “female lead’s saintly halo shining upon the earth”?
“Brother Shen, I think I can explain,” Fang Qingying said after some thought, figuring it was worth a shot. Maybe she could salvage the situation?
“Enough. Tell me where you are, I don’t want to ask again.”
Shen Lixie clearly had no patience for her nonsense and cut straight to the point, demanding her location.
“I really am at,” Fang Qingying’s words were cut off by a cool, composed voice.
“Xiao Ying, are you awake? Come down and have some porridge to warm your stomach.”
The voice was unmistakably Gu Shengxiao’s, Shen Lixie recognized it instantly.
Immediately, Shen Lixie reflexively hung up the call.
Fang Qingying stared at her phone in confusion as the dial tone sounded. Had Shen Lixie believed her or not?
When Gu Shengxiao didn’t get a response, she grew worried that something might have happened to Fang Qingying and went upstairs to check on her.
Knocking lightly on the door, Gu Shengxiao turned the handle and stepped inside, only to find Fang Qingying sitting dazedly on the bed, clutching her phone, lost in thought.
“Xiao Ying?” she called softly.
“Huh?” Fang Qingying blinked and looked up. “What’s wrong?”
Why was she suddenly calling her name?
“Did you just wake up?” Gu Shengxiao sat down on the edge of the bed, studying her.
When silent, Fang Qingying looked sweet and well-behaved. The saying “still as a virgin, lively as a fleeing hare” fit her perfectly.
She had a pair of beautiful phoenix eyes, with long lashes slightly upturned, the outer corners tinged with a faint red, as if she had just woken up. Her skin was smooth as jade, so delicate that the slightest touch would leave a red mark, clear evidence of how well she had been pampered.
“Mm, just woke up.” Fang Qingying gave a slight nod, lowering her gaze to her phone as she asked, “Xiao Xiao, did we know each other before?”
The things Shen Lixie had mentioned still weighed heavily on her mind. If what Shen Lixie said was true, why would Gu Shengxiao still be so eager to be friends with her?
Could she still back out of the deal she made with 888?
The moment this thought crossed Fang Qingying’s mind, 888 immediately protested.
It had only just been released from solitary confinement and hadn’t even had a chance to breathe in the fresh air before hearing Fang Qingying’s thoughts of giving up.
In an instant, 888 felt its entire system-life crumbling into despair.
[No! You promised to complete the mission! You can’t go back on your word!]
Like a cat with its fur bristling, 888 frantically lashed out at Fang Qingying.
[How can you break your promise like this? Don’t you have any integrity at all?]
Fang Qingying rubbed her temples in frustration. How could she have forgotten that 888 could hear her thoughts?
Just as she was trying to figure out how to explain herself to 888, a pleasant fragrance suddenly wafted toward her. Then, her hand was enveloped in a warm grasp.
The other person’s fingers pressed gently against her temples, massaging them as she asked, “Does this feel better? You drank the wine Yu Lu left in the fridge yesterday, it’s no surprise you’d wake up dizzy today.”
Gu Shengxiao’s voice was like the light chime of pearls falling onto a jade plate, yet also carried the crisp coolness of winter frost melting away, soothing to the ears.
Only after hearing this did Fang Qingying belatedly register the dull ache in her head. The massage felt so good, easing her discomfort, that she instinctively half-closed her eyes, a soft sigh escaping her throat.
“Mm.”
At this sound, Gu Shengxiao’s fingers paused for a brief moment. A wave of heat seemed to spread from her fingertips, seeping into every corner of her body.
She stiffly withdrew her hand, steadying Fang Qingying into an upright sitting position, masking her own flustered state with a composed tone. “Are you hungry? I made some congee downstairs, and there are also steamed buns and fried dough sticks. I wasn’t sure what you’d like.”
If Fang Qingying weren’t here, she might have just asked the housekeeper to prepare a fruit salad for her. But with Fang Qingying present, she selfishly didn’t want anyone else to see her.
So she had woken up early to tidy the kitchen and followed an online recipe to prepare breakfast. As for the steamed buns and fried dough sticks, she had asked the housekeeper to bring those over.
“I’d like some congee,” Fang Qingying replied without hesitation, shaking off the last remnants of drowsiness.
As she got out of bed, she realized she was still wearing a pale ink-colored nightgown. She froze for a moment before turning to glance at Gu Shengxiao, as if seeking confirmation.
“You threw up last night, so I had no choice but to change your clothes for you,” Gu Shengxiao smoothly offered an excuse.
In truth, Fang Qingying had wanted to take a shower the night before.
But she had ended up standing under the water still fully clothed, the damp fabric clinging uncomfortably to her skin. So, right in front of Gu Shengxiao, she had stripped off her clothes.
Gu Shengxiao covered her nose, afraid she might accidentally get a nosebleed from witnessing such a vivid and alluring scene.
“So this is how I act when I’m drunk? Does that mean I have terrible drinking manners?” Fang Qingying smacked her lips and asked Gu Shengxiao with a worried expression.
After all, she was a friend she’d worked hard to make. What if she scared her off with her drunken antics from last night?
