- Chapter 2 - Fang Fang
Shen Lixie looked at Fang Qingying with an expression too complex for words. After she finished speaking, he immediately pulled out his phone, made a call, and pressed the emergency alert button.
The call was quickly answered, and a deep, hoarse male voice came through, sounding as if he had just woken up.
“What’s up?”
Instead of responding right away, Shen Lixie pressed the record button and turned to Fang Qingying. “Come on, say that again.”
Fang Qingying blinked in confusion. “Hey, Dad? You there? Can you peel me an apple?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, a series of loud, chaotic noises erupted from the other end of the call.
Fang Qingying frowned. “What happened?”
Shen Lixie grinned like a gleeful three-hundred-pound child, waving his hand dismissively at her to indicate it was nothing.
Then he turned away, pressing the phone to his ear and whispering, “Heh, did you hear that? Good boy.”
The person on the other end was utterly baffled, his voice laced with suppressed irritation. “Hah, who’s calling who ‘Dad’ isn’t set in stone yet.”
Shen Lixie feigned fear. “Oh no, I’m so scared. Bye, then.”
Without giving the other person a chance to respond, he stuffed the phone back into his pocket and strode toward the approaching doctor.
“Dr. Chen, hello. I’m Fang Qingying’s family member. How is her current condition?”
He hadn’t called the doctor over to ask whether Fang Qingying had lost her mind, he was here to check on her actual condition.
Fang Qingying had an older brother who had always been exceptionally bright. Over time, the two siblings were often compared, and Fang Qingying, being highly sensitive, had once sought counseling from a renowned psychologist.
Originally, her parents had been reluctant to let her enter the entertainment industry, but seeing her eagerness and enthusiasm, they couldn’t bring themselves to refuse.
Yesterday’s incident had been partly due to negligence on his part. He had been meeting with a director whose situation was somewhat unusual, so he had kept his messages hidden and made himself unreachable.
Thankfully, Gao Tian had been sharp enough to notice Fang Qingying’s odd behavior otherwise, he would have regretted it for the rest of his life.
“The patient is recovering well. We’ll run another checkup tomorrow, and if everything looks good, she can be discharged,” Dr. Chen said, flipping through the medical chart and glancing at Fang Qingying.
“What time is the checkup tomorrow?” Shen Lixie asked.
“Eight in the morning. The patient should ideally be fasting,” Dr. Chen replied before walking away.
Fang Qingying pouted pitifully, clutching her stomach and occasionally stealing glances at the fruit basket nearby.
Shen Lixie chuckled helplessly. He leisurely unbuttoned his cuff, rolled up his sleeve, and folded it neatly before striding over to the fruit basket with his long legs.
“Want an apple?” Shen Lixie asked, holding a bright red apple in one hand and a fruit knife in the other.
Fang Qingying nodded without hesitation, making it clear just how much she wanted one.
She was starving.
Gao Tian had gone to buy porridge, but it had already been five or six minutes, and she still wasn’t back. Was Fang Qingying really going to be the cannon-fodder side character who starved to death on her first day transmigrating into a novel?
That would be way too embarrassing.
Shen Lixie studied her for a moment, taking in her pitiful expression before clicking his tongue.
After washing the apple and the knife, he sat down in a chair and began peeling the apple for her. The sharp blade glided over the vibrant red skin, applying just enough pressure to strip it away bit by bit.
After a while, an intact apple peel fell into the trash bin. Shen Lixie washed the apple, cut it into strips with a knife, and handed them to Fang Qingying one by one.
Fang Qingying seemed to be nibbling slowly on the apple strips, but in reality, within seconds, they were all devoured.
Shen Lixie frowned and slowed down the pace of handing her the strips. “Eat slower,” he said.
Someone who had just been rescued, eating so ravenously, wasn’t she afraid of choking?
Hearing this, Fang Qingying paused and looked up with pitiful eyes, shimmering with unshed tears. “I’m hungry.”
The damned original host hadn’t eaten since last night. With everything that had happened this morning, and now it was past two in the afternoon, she still hadn’t had a bite.
On top of that, female celebrities didn’t eat much, so she was practically starving to the point of feeling her ribs against her back.
When she woke up, the exhaustion and hunger hit her hard, Fang Qingying almost cursed out loud. She hated being hungry the most. Back in the orphanage, there were always mischievous kids who bullied others.
They would often steal her food, tormenting her where the matron couldn’t see, only to act like victims in front of her.
Though she eventually toughened up and no one dared to bully her anymore, the fear of going hungry had already left a deep scar.
So, she was terrified of being hungry.
“How long has it been since you last ate?” Shen Lixie picked up another apple and started peeling it again.
“Probably since last night, and I haven’t even had a sip of water,” Fang Qingying counted on her fingers, looking a bit silly.
Shen Lixie: “…”
He took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to smack someone, veins bulging on his forehead from the effort.
“If you don’t die from anything else, you’ll starve to death.”
In the end, Shen Lixie coldly tossed out those words and handed her the whole apple, no longer in the mood to cut it into strips.
Fang Qingying lowered her head, holding the apple, her teeth lightly biting her lip. “I just didn’t think it through at the time,” she said pitifully. “They were saying such awful things, so I stopped bothering Yun Yifan.”
She figured that if she really wanted to escape the fate of a cannon-fodder supporting character, the first step was to cut ties with the male lead. Otherwise, given the nature of this novel, she’d inevitably get dragged into all sorts of blame and trouble.
The only thing Fang Qingying felt grateful for was that the original host’s feelings for Yun Yifan hadn’t been too obvious, just a shy, unspoken crush.
The reason she ended up trending on Weibo was purely because the original host always appeared near Yun Yifan.
The tipping point was when the original host was harassed and had water splashed on her. Yun Yifan happened to see it and, out of obligation due to their families’ business ties, stepped in to help.
The original host ended up collapsing against Yun Yifan, and from a certain angle, it looked like she had forcefully thrown herself at him.
Though, Fang Qingying would never admit that the original host had indeed entertained that thought in that moment, nearly fainting from happiness. But since nothing had been explicitly stated, there was still room to salvage the situation.
Listening to Fang Qingying’s explanation, Shen Lixie furrowed his brows and instinctively asked, “Are you sure you don’t have any feelings for Yun Yifan at all?”
Unlike others, Shen Lixie had practically watched Fang Qingying grow up. What was she thinking? Did he not know?
That day, Fang Qingying returned home and suddenly announced that she wanted to enter the entertainment industry.
Shen Lixie thought about the people she had encountered recently, among them being Yun Yifan. Rumor had it that Yun Yifan had a girl he liked in the entertainment industry, and she was quite famous.
Therefore, Shen Lixie reasonably suspected that Fang Qingying’s motive for entering the industry was to go after that girl.
Fang Qingying raised her head sadly, her delicate face tinged with a hint of sickly beauty. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, as if she was struggling to hold them back.
She opened her mouth, her voice almost choked with sobs, “Brother Xie, you’ve watched me grow up. Don’t you believe what I say?”
Shen Lixie was only 27 this year, just about five years older than Fang Qingying. Yet, the way she spoke made it seem like he was a whole generation older.
Shen Lixie thought, Is this why I’m called ‘Daddy’?
Fang Qingying usually never called him ‘Brother Xie’, she would either call him ‘Brother Lixie’ or ‘Brother Shen.’
That was why he found it so unbelievable when she suddenly addressed him as ‘Brother Xie.’
“Then answer me one question first,” Shen Lixie said after a moment of silence. Instead of responding to her question, he posed one of his own.
“Go ahead.”
“Why do you want to enter the entertainment industry?”
“……”
Fang Qingying guiltily lowered her gaze. There was no way she could tell the truth.
“See? You’re only doing this because of Yun Yifan, aren’t you? Just because you heard he likes some girl in the industry, you want to barge in? What are you trying to prove?”
“That you’re better than her? That you’re more worthy of him?”
Shen Lixie cut straight to the heart of the matter, laying bare the original host’s motives.
The reason her family had entrusted her to Shen Lixie was mainly because his family had connections in the industry, and he himself was a renowned top-tier agent.
“That’s not true!” Fang Qingying stiffened her neck in protest. Only a fool would admit to that now.
“I love acting!”
Shen Lixie nearly laughed in exasperation. “Love acting? Is that why you skipped your acting coach’s classes? Why you overslept on set? Why the director called you ‘utterly talentless’ over a dozen times?”
And that was putting it mildly. Fang Qingying’s acting was downright unbearable, stiffer than a wooden puppet.
Instead of honing her skills, she spent all her time trying to pick fights with the female lead. Unfortunately, Fang Qingying hadn’t even met the female lead yet since joining the production.
Shen Lixie suspected her real purpose for joining the crew was to cause trouble for the female lead, she just hadn’t had the chance yet.
But he’d heard the female lead was a double-award-winning actress who had once appeared in the same tabloid photo as Yun Yifan.
“That was an accident,” Fang Qingying muttered awkwardly, biting into an apple as if she wished she could disappear. These were all the original host’s messes, couldn’t she just not take the blame?
Shen Lixie raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
His expression seemed to ask, Are you sure about that?
For Fang Qingying to say something like this, it really must have been a near-death experience that changed her.
“I’ll study acting seriously,” Fang Qingying declared firmly after finishing the apple, wiping her mouth with resolve.
She was just a comic artist, what did she know about acting? But if she said she didn’t want to leave the entertainment industry now, suspicions would surely be raised.
“Heh.” Shen Lixie let out a cold laugh. “You’ve managed to drive away every acting coach we could hire, and now you still want one? There’s just one phrase you need to say, how about that?”
“What phrase?”
“How about calling me ‘dear brother, I was wrong’?”
Fang Qingying: ?
