- Chapter 3 - Door Knock
Early in the morning, Fang Qingying once again completed all the tests arranged by the hospital on an empty stomach. She rubbed her belly while eating the plain congee that Gao Tian had bought for her.
With each bite, her face scrunched up as if she were swallowing poison.
Looking at the test results, Shen Lixie adjusted his glasses and glanced at her. “If you don’t want to eat it, then don’t.”
But before Fang Qingying could happily abandon the congee, Shen Lixie added, “Then you won’t eat anything today.”
Clutching the bowl of congee, Fang Qingying quickly took several gulps as if to calm her nerves, silently weeping inside.
Devil of a manager!
She hated being hungry the most, and now he wouldn’t even let her eat.
“Xiao Tian, pack up. Qingying can be discharged,” Shen Lixie said, curling his lips slightly as he turned his gaze to Gao Tian, rolling up the report in his hand.
“Got it,” Gao Tian nodded.
Fang Qingying changed out of her hospital gown into a casual tracksuit and put on a face mask.
“Be careful when you leave. Find a corner in the waiting area to hide. For some reason, there’s suddenly a crowd of reporters outside,” Shen Lixie checked his wristwatch and instructed, “I’ll go pay the medical bill. You owe me three million.”
Fang Qingying: “???”
Hearing the amount, she thought even the royalties from her published manga weren’t that high. How could just two days in a luxury hospital room cost so much?
“Do you remember the advertisement you signed up for?” Shen Lixie took one look at her and knew exactly what she was thinking. His expression turned cold. “The penalty fee is three million.”
When she signed the contract, she promised to work hard. But then, the moment she heard news about Yun Yifan, she vanished without a trace. To avoid delaying the shoot, it had to be treated as the artist breaching the contract.
Fang Qingying swallowed hard, suddenly feeling the urge to curse. What kind of lovesick fool was the original owner? Chasing after Yun Yifan once cost three million?
“Do you realize your mistake?” Shen Lixie asked.
“I was wrong, bro,” Fang Qingying instinctively replied.
Shen Lixie nodded in satisfaction and sent the recorded voice message to a contact on WeChat.
The other party immediately replied with a text:
‘Just you wait! Trying to usurp my position? Not a chance!’
Shen Lixie sneered. “Hmph.”
Startled by the sound, Fang Qingying instinctively shrank her neck, feeling even more guilty.
“I’ll go pay the bill. Stay alert and don’t get recognized,” Shen Lixie said, his smile fading as he reminded Fang Qingying again with concern.
Fang Qingying nodded obediently to show she understood.
As Shen Lixie walked out of the ward, he tossed back one last remark, “If you cause trouble again? I’ll twist your head off.”
A chill ran down her neck. Beside her, Gao Tian also shrank in fear. “Ying-jie, I still want to live.”
Please don’t act up, please spare me.
Feeling complicated under their gazes, she pulled a pair of sunglasses from her pocket and solemnly put them on.
Fang Qingying: Sunglasses on, no love lost.
The two took the elevator down, faintly hearing the clamor outside. Entertainment reporters were mostly blocked outside the hospital, but the noise was still overwhelming.
Hospitals required a quiet environment, and security was already negotiating with them.
Fang Qingying subtly lowered her sunglasses and whispered to Gao Tian, “Do you know what’s going on? Did they find out I’m being discharged and came for the scoop?”
Upon hearing this, Gao Tian smiled politely and replied, “Are you talking about first-hand gossip, Sister Ying? Like whether someone came to the hospital for an abortion or secretly met with a sugar daddy?”
Fang Qingying opened her mouth slightly, seemingly surprised by Gao Tian’s response. Twirling a strand of her long hair with slender fingers, she asked with a hint of confusion, “Are those reporters really that bored?”
Such topics were rather inappropriate, weren’t they? As a manga artist, she only included such plots for the sake of the story. Yet, for some reason, the thought of it happening in real life made her uncomfortable.
“Sister Ying, you have to understand, this is the age of the internet. Countless people have faced this kind of situation. As a public figure, you need to get used to it,” Gao Tian sighed, speaking earnestly.
If not for this cyberbullying incident, Fang Qingying wouldn’t have been driven to the point of attempting suicide by slitting her wrists.
Fang Qingying lowered her head and murmured, “I know.”
For others, spreading rumors was just momentary fun, but for those trying to clear their names, no amount of effort seemed enough to change public perception.
She felt that the original owner of this body had indeed behaved inappropriately at times, but her intentions were only to express her feelings. Nothing more.
Yet, netizens wouldn’t focus on that. To them, a female celebrity publicly pursuing a billionaire CEO was nothing but shameless gold-digging.
In their eyes, the original owner was just some brazen woman throwing herself at a rich man.
“Sister Ying, don’t overthink it. I’ll go get the car from the parking garage. Be careful on your own,” Gao Tian said, glancing at the visibly dejected Fang Qingying as she slung her backpack over her shoulder.
She had initially considered bringing Fang Qingying along, but after some thought, decided it was better to let her rest.
Fang Qingying found a secluded spot to sit down. Before long, two women approached her.
The one leading the way was tall and slender, wearing the same style of sunglasses and face mask as Fang Qingying. Her long, straight black hair cascaded down her back, swaying with each step.
Dressed in a black gown that accentuated her graceful figure, she exuded an inexplicable aura of dominance as she walked closer.
The woman behind her was clearly a polished corporate queen, her every movement radiating confidence and control.
“Shengxiao, why don’t you wait here while I check the situation outside?” the woman in the tailored suit suggested, glancing up at the one in the black gown.
“Mm,” the black-gowned woman nodded. “If it can’t be resolved, just leave. No need to cause trouble for the hospital.”
“No idea how those people got wind of the news, swarming here like a hive. If you don’t show up, it might be hard to wrap things up.”
“Don’t worry. Go take a look first.”
“Alright.”
The suited woman strode away, and Fang Qingying watched as she took a seat not far from her.
Slowly, the black-gowned woman removed her sunglasses and mask, revealing breathtakingly beautiful features. Her long hair tumbled forward, framing her snow-white skin.
As if sensing someone’s gaze, she tilted her head slightly, the corners of her eyes lifting as though she had spotted an acquaintance. Her lips curved into a faint smile.
Fang Qingying stared at her in bewilderment, only snapping out of it when her phone suddenly rang.
“Hey, Xiao Tian, where are you now?” Fang Qingying answered the phone and asked.
The voice on the other end, Gao Tian, sounded clearly flustered. “Ying-jie, reporters have blocked both the front and back. I can’t get in through the back door. What should I do?”
“Find a safe spot and send me your location. Xie-ge and I will come to you,” Fang Qingying said, pressing her lips together.
“Okay, got it,” Gao Tian replied immediately.
As soon as the call ended, Fang Qingying lowered her head and sent a message to Shen Lixie, saying she was heading toward the main entrance. She also forwarded Gao Tian’s location.
If she tried to go through the back door while reporters were swarming both entrances, it would only make her look guilty.
Even if these reporters weren’t here for her, they’d pounce like dogs catching the scent of meat.
She had barely stood up when the other person followed suit, though they didn’t seem inclined to put their sunglasses and mask back on.
At the entrance, Fang Qingying hesitated, unsure how to slip out unnoticed, but the other person strode straight outside.
Instantly, all the reporters surged forward. Security rushed to block them, joined by a group of men in black who seemed to appear out of nowhere, forming a barrier against the press.
The area outside the hospital erupted into chaos, like a noisy marketplace. Fang Qingying stood frozen, watching the scene unfold.
Should she even try to leave now?
Just then, she spotted a gap where she might be able to slip away unnoticed. She thought, Surely, I can’t be that unlucky.
But as it turned out?
Just as she was about to weave through the crowd, someone suddenly bumped into her, shoving her toward the entrance.
Staggering backward a few steps, Fang Qingying quickly turned around and saw a woman in a black dress coming toward her. Reacting fast, she reached out and braced her hand against the doorframe behind the woman.
Right in front of everyone, Fang Qingying had just door-slammed the woman in the black dress.
The rapid clicking of camera shutters filled her ears. Before her was a neck as fair as jade, and a delicate fragrance wafted toward her, making the tips of Fang Qingying’s ears burn red.
If she hadn’t caught herself on the doorframe, she would have crashed straight into the woman or worse, knocked her to the ground.
Neither outcome was something she wanted, especially under these circumstances.
“Can you move now?”
The woman’s cool voice carried a soothing quality, as if it could temper even the scorching summer heat.
Startled, Fang Qingying straightened up and forced a composed apology. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s fine,” the woman replied indifferently.
Fang Qingying exhaled in relief but before she could fully relax, someone suddenly called out her name.
“Is that Fang Qingying?”
“Didn’t the internet say she slit her wrists?”
“She doesn’t look like it!”
“…”
The reporters chattered among themselves, making Fang Qingying wish she could disappear.
Her sunglasses had fallen off during the commotion, but her mask was still on. How had they recognized her just from her eyes?
She didn’t notice the flicker of something unreadable in the other woman’s gaze when the reporters mentioned her name.
Then, a clear, bright voice rang out from behind the crowd.
“Xiao Ying’er! I’m here to pick you up!”
Fang Qingying: “…”
The other party’s words were an indirect way of telling everyone who she was!
She was done for.
Her head wouldn’t stay on her shoulders much longer.
