- Chapter 1 - Awakening
“Beep… beep beep…”
In the sterile-smelling hospital room, three or four doctors stood with bowed heads, shaking them silently in resignation.
Suddenly, the medical monitor sounded an alarm.
“The patient’s heartbeat has returned! Quick, to the operating room!”
“Coming through!”
“Make way!”
“…”
After a flurry of chaotic activity, the red light above the operating room lit up. The young woman who had followed the gurney leaned exhaustedly against the wall, panting heavily as she pulled out her phone.
With practiced ease, she dialed a number she knew by heart. The call connected within seconds.
“How is she?”
A steady male voice came through the line, though it carried an unmistakable note of concern now.
“Xie-ge, Ying-jie suddenly regained a heartbeat! The doctors are performing emergency surgery now! You need to get to the hospital right away!”
The girl steadied her trembling hands as she relayed the full situation.
“Understood. Xiao Tian, this time you’d better keep a close eye on that idiot Fang Qingying!”
The man spoke through gritted teeth before hanging up. Even so, the girl called Xiao Tian could faintly hear the sound of hurried footsteps through the phone.
Not long after, the operating room light turned off, and nurses wheeled the patient back to the original room, a luxurious private ward. As they carefully transferred her to the bed, one nurse turned to Xiao Tian with instructions.
Xiao Tian nodded and asked, “Nurse, when will she wake up?”
Unlike before, the monitor now showed fluctuations, proof of life.
“The doctor said it could be as soon as one or two hours, or as late as tomorrow morning,” the nurse replied, continuing her checks around the room. “If anything happens, press the emergency button by the bed. Also, here’s the hospitalization bill.”
“Got it.” Xiao Tian took the bill and glanced at the amount, then at the lavish private room. Instinctively, she opened her mobile wallet.
After three seconds of silence, she decisively sent a text to ‘Xie-ge’:
I’m too broke to cover this, Xie-ge, hurry up and get here!
…
The woman lying on the bed was strikingly beautiful. Her delicate brows were slightly furrowed, her crimson lips pressed into a thin line, and her jet-black hair cascaded like flowing water across the sheets.
Beneath the hospital gown, her skin was flawless, as if it might break at the slightest touch. At this moment, she resembled nothing so much as the legendary Sleeping Beauty.
Xiao Tian sat in a chair, anxiously watching the half-finished IV drip as she muttered to herself, “Ying-jie, what were you thinking? How could you do something as stupid as slitting your wrists?”
The memory of rushing into the bathroom after her calls went unanswered still made her heart pound with terror.
What Xiao Tian didn’t know was that the woman listening to her words had begun to tremble slightly, as if struggling to open her eyes…
After an indeterminate amount of time, the woman on the bed suddenly opened her eyes, revealing a pair of striking phoenix eyes.
Those ink-black pupils brimmed with confusion as they took in the surroundings. For a moment, she couldn’t make sense of what was happening.
She remembered working late into the night in her rented apartment, desperately trying to meet her comic editor’s deadlines. Out of ideas, she’d picked up a novel a friend had recommended.
She hadn’t even finished reading it when the power went out. Then she opened her eyes to find herself in this luxurious hospital bed?
Fang Qingying desperately wanted to ask about the current situation, but she could feel the exhaustion in her body, rendering her unable to move.
Just as she was wondering how she could get someone’s attention, there was a knock on the hospital room door.
Xiao Tian immediately looked up at the sound and walked toward the door, turning the handle to open it.
As expected, she saw a tall man dressed in a dark suit and wearing gold-rimmed glasses.
Xiao Tian: “Brother Xie, you’re finally here. Come in quickly.”
“Mhm. The news online has already blown up. We absolutely must keep that brat Fang Qingying’s whereabouts a secret,” said the man Xiao Tian had called ‘Brother Xie’ as he casually locked the door behind him and gave Xiao Tian instructions.
“Uh-huh, I know,” Xiao Tian nodded hurriedly while clutching her phone.
The moment the man stepped into the room, his eyes landed on her awake state, and his anger instantly flared up.
“Fang Qingying, what am I supposed to say to you? Couldn’t you at least pick a better time to provoke President Yun? You know full well he can’t stand you, yet you keep running over there to be scorned. Does that make you happy?”
The man ranted furiously, only to find the person he was lecturing staring back at him with a dazed expression, which only fueled his frustration further.
“Say something! Don’t just space out. Don’t think playing dumb today will get you off the hook!”
Fang Qingying blinked and spoke softly, “Sorry, but… who are you? And who is this President Yun you mentioned? Also, why am I in the hospital?”
Hearing this, the man’s first reaction was to ask, “Did you lose your memory? How does slitting your wrists make you forget things?”
Fang Qingying replied guiltily, “…I’m not feeling very clear-headed right now.”
The man shot her a look of exasperation and sighed. “My name is Shen Lixie. I’m your manager. President Yun is Yun Yifan. As for why you’re here? Because you were stupid enough to slit your wrists.”
Shen Lixie finished speaking and lowered his gaze to Fang Qingying, as if waiting to see how much further she could feign ignorance.
“You’re saying… you’re Shen Lixie? And Yun Yifan? And I… slit my wrists?”
Fang Qingying lay on the hospital bed, her delicate brows furrowing slightly. Why did these two names sound so familiar? It was almost as if they were from a novel she’d read…
Wait a minute…
Fang Qingying’s eyes suddenly lit up as if she had remembered something.
The male lead of the novel she had read back then was named Yun Yifan. The reason she had kept reading was that there was a cannon-fodder female character in the book who shared her exact name.
This female character was filthy rich, but unfortunately, she was also incredibly foolish.
Somehow, she had fallen for the male lead and went to absurd lengths for him, even targeting the female lead. She entered the entertainment industry to compete with the female lead for resources, only to end up hated by the entire internet. So… she had become that cannon-fodder side character?
No, this couldn’t be! Even if they beat her to death, she wouldn’t believe it!
In Shen Lixie and Xiao Tian’s eyes, Fang Qingying’s face was like a palette of colors, shifting endlessly.
“What are you thinking about?” Shen Lixie interrupted her daze.
He even considered pressing the emergency call button to summon a doctor was Fang Qingying’s brain malfunctioning from blood loss?
“Don’t talk. Let me process this,” Fang Qingying muttered, turning her face away, unwilling to engage with either of them.
If we follow the book’s plot, after the cannon-fodder female supporting character’s suicide attempt was saved, she still relentlessly pursued the male lead and targeted the female lead, later enduring three months of online bullying.
This drove the original host, in a mentally unstable state, to kidnap the female lead in an attempt to make her disappear from the world.
The original host’s goal was simple, she just wanted the male lead to like her and acknowledge her existence.
During this time, the original host’s family repeatedly urged her to give up, but their hearts were gradually broken, and they eventually lost all hope in her.
After cutting all ties, they chose to stand by and watch her self-destructive behavior with cold indifference.
The original host’s death became the catalyst for deepening the relationship between the male and female leads.
Fang Qingying thought… this didn’t seem quite right. Wasn’t the cannon-fodder female supporting character’s plotline a bit too much? It was almost on par with a villainess. So where exactly was the problem?
Before she could figure it out, the phone she had left in Xiao Tian’s care started ringing incessantly.
Xiao Tian quickly pulled Fang Qingying’s phone from her backpack. Seeing the name on the caller ID, she hesitated and glanced at Shen Lixie before asking, “Brother Xie, it’s Yingjie’s best friend calling. Should we, let her answer?”
She didn’t finish the sentence, instead signaling Shen Lixie with her eyes.
Every time a call or message came from this so-called “best friend,” Yingjie would go crazy.
What if… letting her take this call made her spiral again?
Before Shen Lixie could respond, Fang Qingying noticed the ringing phone, its custom ringtone set by the original host.
“Give me the phone?” Fang Qingying turned to look at Xiao Tian.
Xiao Tian’s full name was Gao Tian, a recent college graduate who had been working as her assistant for less than three months. Despite her inexperience, she was diligent in everything she did, and the original host had been very fond of her.
“Ying… Yingjie, it’s not convenient for you to take calls right now,” Gao Tian said hesitantly, reluctant to hand over the phone.
“Give it to me.” Shen Lixie didn’t wait for Fang Qingying to respond before taking the phone from Gao Tian and walking toward the balcony.
“Yingjie, Brother Xie is just looking out for you,” Gao Tian quickly explained, worried that Fang Qingying might resent Shen Lixie.
“It’s fine. If he wants to answer, let him,” Fang Qingying replied indifferently. Instead, she was feeling hungry. “Xiao Tian, do you have any food? I’m starving.”
The original host hadn’t eaten since last night and had undergone two emergency treatments, no wonder Fang Qingying woke up feeling weak and exhausted.
If not for the IV drip replenishing some of her energy, Fang Qingying doubted she’d even have the strength to speak.
“Yes, yes, yes!” Hearing Fang Qingying’s request, Gao Tian nodded eagerly before dashing off under her expectant gaze, leaving behind one last remark.
“I’ll go buy some right now.”
Fang Qingying: “…”
If you don’t have any, just say so. Why lie and say you do?
Unable to stop Gao Tian from leaving, Fang Qingying turned her attention to Shen Lixie, who was still on the phone.
“Brother Xie?”
“Hey?”
“Brother Xie, could you at least acknowledge me?”
Fang Qingying tried to get Shen Lixie’s attention.
She succeeded but the look Shen Lixie gave her was one of utter bewilderment, as if he’d just seen the sun rise from the west.
“What did you just call me?” Shen Lixie asked, holding the now-ended call, his voice laced with confusion.
Had he heard correctly? She called him “Brother Xie”?
“Brother Xie?” Fang Qingying tentatively called out.
Seeing Shen Lixie’s strange expression again, she took a deep breath and cautiously spoke once more.
“How about… dear dad? You there? Could you peel an apple for me?”
