- Chapter 77 - Taking Power for a Loved One
Having worked together to deal with the guards, Jiufang Cangze carefully helped Lunling to his feet. He noticed the strange way he was standing. “Can you walk?”
Lunling shook his head. His leg bones were broken, and long nails were embedded in his ankles. It was almost impossible for him to walk.
The cell door was open. Xu Wan shot out of the crate and ran over to hug Lunling, his heart aching.
Jiufang Cangze sighed at the group of small, weak, and injured people. He reached behind him and, with a great effort, broke open his flesh.
“Ugh…!”
A blood-stained communication token was pulled out.
He wiped the bits of flesh and blood off with his sleeve and handed it to Xu Wan, instructing him, “You take Lunling and go. I’ll lure the guards away. Qiu Fuxue is waiting for you outside.”
Lunling, however, felt that it was wrong to let him take the risk. “Your Excellency, what about you?”
Jiufang Cangze looked confident. “Don’t worry. There are still some things I need to settle with Ye Chu . You go first.”
After the plan was set, the group split up. Jiufang Cangze was outnumbered, and there were an unusual number of guards in the dungeon. He was quickly captured.
Fortunately, Lunling and the others managed to escape safely.
He was tied up and brought before Ye Chu. He refused to kneel, so a guard kicked his knee, forcing him down.
Ye Chu was expressionless. He admired the dagger in his hand. “Jiufang Cangze, I really want to know how many lives you have left to go through this.”
Jiufang Cangze sneered. “More than you!”
“Impudent!”
A guard shouted and kicked him in the small of his back. A mouthful of blood rose in his throat, but he forced it back down.
Ye Chu didn’t get angry. His cold eyes stared straight at him. He heard the soft sound of a door opening, and his eyes instantly softened.
“Is the master busy?” Gu Mian stood at the door, holding a bowl of hot porridge, hesitant to enter.
Ye Chu personally stood up to welcome him. “No, I’m not. He’s not worthy.”
Jiufang Cangze’s back was to them, so he couldn’t see what Gu Mian looked like, but he was surprised by Ye Chu’s rare tenderness.
They had known each other for so long, and it was the first time he had ever heard him speak to someone in that tone.
Ye Chu put his arm around Gu Mian and led him to the table. Jiufang Cangze looked up. It was a face he didn’t know, but the aura was very familiar.
A thought flashed in his mind. Everything Ye Chu had done now made sense.
No wonder he, who would never have threatened the pair, had tried to take the position of demon lord and tried to kill him.
He looked at Gu Mian and smiled bitterly. “Ye Chu, I understand what you did, but you just don’t trust me?”
Ye Chu held Gu Mian’s hand with one hand and stirred the steaming porridge with the other. He didn’t even lift his eyelids. He said faintly, “You have no love. How can I trust you? Instead of entrusting my beloved to a cruel demon, it’s better to firmly hold power in my own hands.”
Cruel and bloodthirsty. This wasn’t just how the outside world saw Jiufang Cangze; it was how his own subordinates saw him.
But he was born this way. He couldn’t choose.
His heart suddenly felt empty, as if he had been despised by a long-lost friend. He lowered his head, his thoughts a chaotic mess.
A low laugh echoed through the vast hall. The sound grew louder and louder. Jiufang Cangze slowly raised his head, his face contorted in a smile.
Ye Chu waited for him to stop laughing before he mocked him. “You look like Qiu Fuxue broke your mind.”
Jiufang Cangze scoffed. “A-Xue treats me very well.”
Then, he looked at Gu Mian. “You only got out halfway? When the Moonlight Wall is destroyed, you won’t survive either!”
Gu Mian’s expression was calm. “Coming here and experiencing true love in this world is enough. It’s better than wasting time and having nothing.”
“A-Mian.” Ye Chu frowned. He couldn’t stand to hear him say that. “You go home first. I will definitely cure you.”
Jiufang Cangze was taken to the stone cave that sealed the Moonlight Wall. A guard threw him down roughly. The broken stones scraped his skin, and a few small stones, impacted by the force, embedded themselves in the open wounds on his back.
His vision was blurry from the pain. Ye Chu lifted him by the back of his neck and forced him to kneel, facing the large stone door.
There were a few dried bloodstains on the door that were exceptionally striking. A look of regret flashed in his crimson eyes.
That was Qiu Fuxue’s blood. It was still there after all this time.
Ye Chu swung his sword and cut the ropes that bound him. “Jiufang Cangze, I have let you live until now. It’s time for you to show your worth.”
“You think I haven’t tried?” Jiufang Cangze looked at him with a provocative expression. “If I could easily open this door, your little lover wouldn’t still be alive!”
“SLAP—!”
Ye Chu’s face was terrifyingly grim. The slap was thrown with all his might.
Jiufang Cangze fell to the ground, a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth. Before he could recover from the painful dizziness, a powerful force suddenly hit him from the side, throwing him against the carved stone door.
Countless long nails, gleaming with a cold light, shot at him from all directions. All he heard was the sound of them cutting through the air, and then they were mercilessly hammered into his joints.
“AHHHHH—!”
He threw his long neck back and let out a miserable scream. His entire body was trembling from the pain.
But despite the pain, he felt a little grateful. At least this way, his blood could cover A-Xue’s blood.
Ye Chu nervously watched the stone door for a change. But after a long time, the unyielding stone door was almost completely covered in fresh blood, yet it remained motionless.
The last flicker of hope in his heart was completely extinguished.
If that was the case, there was no reason to let Jiufang Cangze live.
His cold gaze fell on the bloody body. He tightened his grip on his longsword. As he flew towards Jiufang Cangze, he suddenly heard the sound of fighting from above.
A cold chill ran up his spine. Ye Chu turned around cautiously and held his longsword in front of him. Two sharp blades collided with a crisp sound!
A sword aura, carrying a flash of light, forced him back half a step. Qiu Fuxue took the opportunity to cut the nails from Jiufang Cangze’s body. His body hit the ground with a dull thud, mixed with a groan.
“I’m late.” Qiu Fuxue carefully helped him up.
The latter spat out a mouthful of blood. While he was still conscious, he wrapped his arms around his neck to take advantage. “…You’re not late. It’s good that you’re here.”
Qiu Fuxue tolerated his actions for now. The sword spirit suddenly appeared. It grew several times in size, forming a large net that blocked a flurry of fiery sparks from the red umbrella.
“Qiu Fuxue.” Ye Chu said coldly. “You are a respectable opponent. It’s a shame your taste is so bad.”
“What are you to say that?” Qiu Fuxue cursed back. He cast a spell that temporarily trapped Ye Chu and the red umbrella in an explosion.
Jiufang Cangze fell unconscious for a moment. When his consciousness returned, he found that he was still in the demon realm. The rows of bookshelves in front of him looked a little familiar.
He watched as Qiu Fuxue went through the books on the shelves, one by one, as if he were looking for something.
