- After His Demise, the Demon Lord's Doted Canary Finally Sees the Light
- Chapter 76 - A Shocking Secret in the Dungeon
Inside the damp, cold dungeon, horrifying screams echoed, and the sounds of a whip lashing against flesh were endless.
The young girl, who had never left the palace gates, suddenly found herself in this terrible hell. She huddled in a corner of the shadows, her eyes brimming with tears. Her fair hands covered her mouth tightly, afraid to let out even the slightest sound.
For some reason, the dungeon guards were suddenly reinforced. A patrol of demon soldiers was walking straight towards her hiding place.
Jing An didn’t dare to breathe. She was trembling all over. Just then, a hand suddenly reached out from the darkness behind her and patted her.
The demon soldiers carried hellfire lanterns, lighting up every dark corner, but they found nothing.
The most agonizing part of the day passed, and the dungeon returned to a deathly silence. Xu Wan crawled out from an abandoned wooden crate and beckoned Jing An over, making a shushing motion.
He glanced at the bloody body lying in the cell, and a wave of pain shot through his heart.
This was how he had been for the past few days. He hid in a wooden crate and only dared to crawl out after the guards left to quietly look at Lunling . But he couldn’t even give him a little bit of medicine.
Jing An followed him out and immediately saw Lunling. The dungeon was filled with a pungent smell of blood, most of which came from him.
“Is he… dead?”
Xu Wan’s eyes sparkled with tears, and he said hoarsely, “I wish he was dead.”
Lunling was very good at enduring pain. They had been injured often while on the run, but he would hide it from Xu Wan for a long time.
But ever since he came to this place, Xu Wan heard Lunling’s screams every day.
To live a life worse than death was something Xu Wan hadn’t experienced in a long time.
The sound of messy footsteps echoed in the dark passage. Xu Wan’s ears perked up. He pulled Jing An and hid in the wooden crate again.
The chains rattled, and the cell door was opened again. A guard dragged a heavy body and threw it inside.
The hellfire flickered, and the dungeon fell into silence again. Jiufang Cangze opened one eye. After confirming that there was no one around, he slowly got up.
Although Qiu Fuxue had given him a life-saving charm, Ye Chu had been truly vicious, making him suffer a lot of physical pain.
“Lunling… Lunling!”
He patted the person next to him on the shoulder and called out softly. Lunling was covered in blood. Fresh drops of blood fell from him, and his wounds were reopened before they could heal.
This action happened to touch his injured bones. Lunling unconsciously let out a groan of pain and was jolted awake.
He looked at the face with the deep features and thought he was hallucinating.
“Your Excellency…?”
He’s still alive. Jiufang Cangze secretly sighed in relief. He put his arm around his shoulder and helped him up.
But he didn’t expect to touch a wound. Lunling’s body suddenly shook, and he twitched and fell to the ground.
It was only then that Jiufang Cangze saw the two long nails in his shoulder joints, gleaming with a cold light.
Lunling followed his gaze and moved his eyes. He spoke weakly. “…The cruel torture method I invented… ended up being used on me.”
Jiufang Cangze took out a pill from his sleeve and put it to Lunling’s mouth. “Eat it. It will save your life.”
Lunling obediently opened his mouth. A sharp pain came over him, but he could feel a clear return of some of his strength.
Jiufang Cangze explained. “It’s a pill given by A-Xue. Its spiritual energy always clashes with demonic energy… He’s waiting outside the barrier. I’m here to get you out.”
With his help, Lunling sat up, panting. “Your Excellency… I don’t regret dying. I’m not worth the risk.”
“Don’t say such foolish things!” Jiufang Cangze frowned unhappily. Just then, a faint sound came from outside. He quickly pulled Lunling down to the ground to play dead.
“Your Excellency?” The voice of a young boy was a little childish. Jiufang Cangze was stunned. He looked up and met a pair of moist, round eyes.
Lunling heard the voice and became even more emotional.
Jiufang Cangze scoffed and helped him up again. “If you die, who will take care of your little Wan Wan (挽挽)?”
The tears suddenly flowed freely, washing away the blood on his face.
Lunling choked up as he crawled to the cell door. He looked at the dirty little face. He wanted to reach out and touch it, but he was afraid his bloody body would only make him dirtier.
“Wan Wan… I told you to escape with Xiao Chang, didn’t I?”
Xu Wan wiped away his tears. He reached his hands through the bars and hugged his wrist. He whimpered, “But I couldn’t bear to leave you.”
In that moment, Lunling felt that his heart ached more than when the nails were hammered into his body.
The slightly round cheeks had become gaunt again. The young boy was timid and afraid of trouble. He didn’t know how much courage he had mustered or how many tears of fear he had shed to step into this place that was hell.
Thousands of words swirled in his heart, but he couldn’t say them. Lunling pressed his hand to his cheek and forced a smile through his tears. “Silly Wan Wan…”
“Um…” Jing An knew she might be a little out of place, so she only poked her head out and asked in a low voice, “Can we still escape?”
The others all looked at her.
Jiufang Cangze’s eyesight wasn’t great. He rubbed his eyes hard. “Are you the Static Peace Princess?”
This girl didn’t look like a demon. If she was indeed Jing An, it would save him from having to look for her everywhere.
“Yes…” Jing An nodded timidly.
“Your fiancé has been asking everyone to save you.” Jiufang Cangze kindly explained, since if it weren’t for her, Qiu Fuxue wouldn’t have had a legitimate reason to be so mean to him.
Once Xu Wan’s tears started, they wouldn’t stop. It broke Lunling’s heart. He held the other’s hand and coaxed him gently for a long time. Then, he suddenly saw the young face change.
“Someone’s coming.”
Xu Wan whispered a warning. Then he and Jing An immediately crawled back into the crate. Jiufang Cangze immediately lay down and played dead.
Two guards walked in, laughing and joking. They sat down on the crate where Xu Wan and Jing An were hiding.
Looking at the two miserable bodies in the cell, one of them said, “Tsk, tsk. So pitiful.”
The other scoffed. “Why feel sorry for them? We never saw them give us any benefits when they were in power.”
“True.” The guard nodded. He went and opened the cell door and kicked Lunling. Then he cruelly stepped on his shoulder.
“UGH—!” Lunling threw his head back and let out a miserable scream. The guard laughed heartily. He then cruelly stepped on his face and ground it into the floor a few times.
“Lunling, crawl over here and kowtow to me a few times, and I’ll let you go!”
The other guard also entered the cell. “What’s the point of tormenting him? I say this one is the most important prisoner.”
With that, he squatted down and grabbed Jiufang Cangze’s hair, yanking him up.
The tightly closed crimson eyes suddenly opened. With a loud CRACK, before the guard could react, his neck was twisted.
And before the other guard could even scream, a thorny vine pierced his throat.
