- After His Demise, the Demon Lord's Doted Canary Finally Sees the Light
- Chapter 60 - Sunset Welcomes Lanzhi
The soft light of the sunset, like a veil, draped over the desk piled with official documents. Qiu Fuxue looked up thoughtfully at the light, and a halo of light fell over half of his face.
Liyun pushed the door open and walked in, seeing this very scene.
He carried a food box and sat down next to Qiu Fuxue. “Brother, this fish was freshly caught from the Jade Lake. I made you some fish soup. Drink it while it’s hot.”
The other man obediently put down his brush and picked up a porcelain spoon, smiling gently. “Thank you, A-Yun. You’ve worked hard.”
Liyun also smiled. He rolled up the documents neatly and began to grind ink on the inkstone.
A little over a month had passed since Qiu Fuxue escaped from the Moon Shadow Wall (yueying bi,).
Ye Chu had used a trick to trap him in there, then sent his troops to cross the barrier and surround the Thousand Thoughts Sect. Luckily, Liyun had led the disciples to fight to the death, and Qiu Fuxue had returned in time. The entire Snowy Peak and Sunset City had not suffered any major casualties.
The moment he saw Qiu Fuxue break through the one-way teleportation formation, Ye Chu was in shock.
Not only him, but even Qiu Fuxue himself wasn’t sure how he had managed to get out.
After the demon army was defeated, the foot of Snowy Peak was a mess. Qiu Fuxue stood in the rubble, his ears filled with the wails and cries of disaster.
He didn’t find the person he was looking for.
It felt unreal. It turned out he was the only one who had escaped the Moon Shadow Wall.
The fish soup was delicious. Qiu Fuxue drank half the bowl in one gulp. A knock came from outside the door.
“Come in.”
The person outside came in and walked up to him. Lunling said nothing and placed a token on the desk.
“My Lord made an agreement with me. After thirty days, if he doesn’t return, I am to give you the Sha Ying token.”
When the demon army attacked, the Sha Ying also contributed to the Thousand Thoughts Sect’s defense, though it wasn’t by choice. It was because Jiufang Cangze had given a final command before he left.
Only those who held the Sha Ying token had the authority to command them.
Qiu Fuxue looked at the token with its intricate patterns but did not move. “If… he never comes back, what will you do?”
Lunling clenched his fists, saying each word clearly. “The Sha Ying follows the holder of the Sha Ying token.”
“I don’t recall this rule.” Qiu Fuxue looked at him. “Your allegiance is to Jiufang Cangze. I can’t guarantee that a token alone can control you.”
“Qiu Fuxue! My Lord did this for you…”
“It was his choice,” Qiu Fuxue interrupted softly. “I won’t accept this favor. Take the token back. Jiufang Cangze is not here. Our cooperation should end.”
A cold voice echoed in the study. “Tomorrow, you will lead all of the Sha Ying and leave the Thousand Thoughts Sect.”
Lunling lowered his head, his face hidden by his messy hair. He finally snatched the Sha Ying token and slammed the door shut as he left.
Liyun watched the other person’s reaction with a cold expression. He did not stop grinding ink. “Brother, you should take this opportunity to eliminate future trouble.”
Qiu Fuxue sighed quietly. “A pack of wolves without a leader is just a scattered mob. We don’t need to do anything. They won’t last long on their own.”
But it was just an excuse. He simply didn’t want to go to extremes.
A year later.
Many days had passed since the Flower Festival, but Sunset City (luori cheng, was still bustling with people, its liveliness undiminished.
Since Wu An was removed from his position and a new city lord took over, Sunset City had visibly grown more prosperous.
The new city lord, Lanzhi , had a good appearance but was a sickly man who was always taking medicine. This made many who wanted to arrange a marriage for him feel regret.
At night, when people passed the city lord’s mansion, they could always hear his earth-shattering cough. Many didn’t understand why Sect Leader Qiu would appoint this man as the city lord of Sunset City.
Yujian stretched in the sun and said to the young man beside him, “Let’s be clear first. My skills aren’t as good as my master’s. Don’t blame me if I can’t heal him.”
Qiu Fuxue’s features were cold and clear. His white robes made him look like a banished immortal. “I didn’t actually plan for you to heal him. It’s just for show.”
Although Lanzhi’s health was poor, his governance skills were outstanding. He didn’t act as foolishly as Wu An. He was a talented man who could be useful.
But this man had his own motives, and it was hard to tell if he was truly loyal to the Thousand Thoughts Sect.
So Qiu Fuxue decided to bring Yujian, a “quack” demon doctor, as a show of goodwill and care.
Qiu Fuxue’s appearance was outstanding, and the locals all recognized him. But during this festive season, there were many foreign cultivators who were attracted by his beauty and stared at him.
Yujian didn’t understand their behavior. He looked up at Qiu Fuxue. “Is he really that handsome? If you look at him for a long time, he’s just… normal…”
Qiu Fuxue’s face was cold, and the corners of his mouth turned down. Suddenly, he heard a whistle from diagonally in front of them.
A young man was leaning against a large tree with his arms crossed, his posture wild and unrestrained. “Oh—! What a beautiful person!”
He had experienced this many times, so he naturally couldn’t be bothered with every single one. Qiu Fuxue only gave the man a glare.
However, the man did not stop. He shifted his gaze to the boy next to him. “Tsk, what a shame. He’s even carrying a small burden…”
Yujian: “…”
“Your whole family is a burden!!!”
The boy immediately blew up, screaming in his young voice. Seeing that he had angered him, the man seemed to have completed his mission and ran away.
Yujian looked like a fuming pufferfish. Qiu Fuxue, however, turned his head to hide a laugh, then patted the other’s head. “Don’t be angry. They are just a bunch of flies.”
“I don’t want to be your son!” Yujian stomped his short legs, deliberately making noise.
“Then who told you that you haven’t grown in a whole year?” Qiu Fuxue muffled his laugh.
Yujian only looked small, but he was actually several hundred years old. He hadn’t grown because he had tested too many of his master’s potions in the past, which damaged his foundation.
Lanzhi had received the news that Qiu Fuxue was visiting and had been waiting at the front gate for a while.
The thin, tall young man wore a heavy cloak. The thick layers of clothing made his face look pale. Even though the weather was getting warmer, he was wearing more clothes than a normal person would in winter.
When he saw Qiu Fuxue’s figure, he stepped forward and bowed. “Cough cough… Lanzhi greets Sect Leader Qiu.”
“No need to be so polite.”
After a few pleasantries, the two entered the front hall. However, they saw an unexpected person.
“Oh! Isn’t that the beautiful person and the small burden from earlier!”
Yujian’s face was darker than a pot. “I… am… not… a… burden!”
Lanzhi’s face was full of apologies. He blocked his friend, Shengyan . “I apologize, Sect Leader Qiu. A-Yan is a friend of mine. He’s a little blunt. I told him to rest in the backyard, but he ran out again.”
“It’s nothing,” Qiu Fuxue said calmly. “It just seems my friend here isn’t very pleased.”
Yujian was like a ball that would explode if you poked it.
“Sect Leader Qiu? You are Qiu Fuxue!” Shengyan’s eyes immediately lit up. He ignored the little boy next to him and ran straight to Qiu Fuxue.
The latter subtly shifted his body to avoid contact with him.
Shengyan noticed the small movement but was not discouraged. Instead, he became more enthusiastic. “Sect Leader Qiu, I heard you haven’t taken any disciples yet! It’s fate that we’ve met today. How about you take me on as your disciple?”
