- Chapter 61 - Good Medicine Recognizes a Demon Doctor
As he spoke, Shengyan became even more unrestrained, almost pressing against Qiu Fuxue.
The latter frowned, leaning back against his chair, and said in a cold voice, “I don’t take disciples.”
“Can’t you reconsider…”
“A-Yan!” Shengyan’s persistence made Lanzhi call out helplessly. “Stop this nonsense! I have important matters to discuss with Sect Leader Qiu. Go back to the backyard and wait!”
With that, he ordered his guards to drag Shengyan away without any room for negotiation.
Qiu Fuxue took a sip of tea to calm himself. “City Lord Lanzhi’s friend is certainly enthusiastic.”
Lanzhi rubbed his throbbing temples. “I’m sorry to have embarrassed myself in front of Sect Leader Qiu.”
After the commotion, the two returned to their business. Lanzhi had a servant bring a scroll, which detailed the types of demons that had appeared in all regions over the past year.
Qiu Fuxue took the scroll. After reading it, he nodded in satisfaction. This was the reason he had made Lanzhi the city lord. Although he was sickly, it didn’t hinder the fact that he was from the Imperial City with immense power and influence, which made it easy to investigate certain matters.
In addition to the Imperial City, there were four major cities: Sunset City, Moonrise City, Morning City, and Twilight City. The Thousand Thoughts Sect had a close relationship with Sunset City, but it was a little inconvenient to extend its influence into the territories of others.
All of the nine fiends had broken free. In the past year, Qiu Fuxue had never stopped investigating the whereabouts of the remaining fiends, but he had found nothing.
With the disappearance of Jiufang Cangze , the nine fiends also seemed to have vanished.
The scroll mostly listed some insignificant minor demons that were quickly dealt with by other immortal sects after their appearance.
Qiu Fuxue closed the scroll. “You’ve done a good job, but it’s not what I’m looking for. Please continue to investigate for me, City Lord Lanzhi.”
Lanzhi had heard many things about what happened in Sunset City a year ago. He nodded and had the servant put the scroll away. “The fiends are cunning. Perhaps they are afraid of the power of the immortal sects and have become temporarily well-behaved.”
Qiu Fuxue let out a long breath. “They will show up eventually…”
The words were filled with complex emotions. He was looking forward to more than just the appearance of the fiends.
A sound came from the door. A servant walked in, holding a bowl of bitter medicine. “City Lord, it’s time for your medicine.”
Lanzhi waved his hand, saying softly, “No rush. Just set it down for now.”
With Shengyan’s earlier example, he clearly felt it was improper to handle private matters in front of a guest.
But the servant worriedly advised, “City Lord, you can’t delay this medicine, or it will lose its effect.”
“What kind of medicine has such strict time requirements?” Qiu Fuxue was a little curious.
Lanzhi reluctantly took the bowl and stirred it with a porcelain spoon. “A divine doctor came to the city a few days ago. My men specially went to him to get a dose of this medicine. I felt better after taking it, so I had them get a few more doses.”
At the mention of medicine, Qiu Fuxue remembered the fuming little person who had been ignored in the corner.
“By the way, my friend here also knows a thing or two about medicine. I brought him here today because I wanted him to examine you, City Lord Lanzhi.”
“Oh?” Lanzhi was surprised. He looked at the fuming child, who had already finished a whole plate of pastries.
Yujian wiped the crumbs from the corner of his mouth, hopped off his chair, and puffed out his chest. “I only look small, but I’m much older than Qiu Fuxue!”
Lanzhi smiled faintly. He pulled his wrist from his thick sleeve and said in a tone as if coaxing a child, “Then I will have to trouble this little divine doctor.”
Yujian grumbled and walked up to him. Before he could even feel his pulse, he was drawn to the bitter medicine.
“This medicine smells so familiar.”
The words caught Qiu Fuxue’s attention. Yujian was from the demon realm. If a medicine was familiar to him, it was certainly not a good one.
“City Lord Lanzhi, my friend here is quite skilled. If you trust him, would you let him examine the medicine?”
“Of course.” Lanzhi handed the bowl of medicine over without a second thought.
Yujian lowered his head and sniffed it carefully. Then he took out a white paper from his robe and dripped some of the medicine onto it.
Soon, the liquid was absorbed, leaving behind a fine powder.
“This is…” Yujian’s young face was deeply furrowed. He rubbed the powder with his fingers and suddenly said, “This is Wangxinghua ”
Wangxinghua was a medicinal herb that only grew in the demon realm. Many of them were grown in Ye Chua’s manor, and that chubby little demon used to sneak in to steal them.
Qiu Fuxue still remembered that he and Yujian had met because of this flower.
His expression was solemn. He stood up and took the bowl. There was no demonic energy in it. “City Lord Lanzhi, this medicinal herb most likely comes from the demon realm.”
“Cough cough… no wonder.” Lanzhi coughed into his fist. “I’ve tried all kinds of elixirs and medicines since I was a child in the Imperial City. How could such a miraculous medicine suddenly appear?”
The medicine in the bowl had turned from warm to slightly cool. Qiu Fuxue’s eyes flickered. “Is that divine doctor still in the city?”
“I heard he often practices medicine on the west side of the city. If Sect Leader Qiu suspects his origins, I can send some men to investigate with you.”
“No need. I can go alone.” Qiu Fuxue declined Lanzhi’s offer. “Demonic medicine is harmful to a mortal body. It’s best to stop taking this medicine for now.”
After saying his goodbyes, Qiu Fuxue took Yujian and left the city lord’s mansion, heading straight for the west side of the city.
As Lanzhi had said, the divine doctor had set up a stall on the street to treat people, and business was booming. There was a long line even in the middle of the day.
Yujian rubbed his chin, his eyes darting around. “Qiu Fuxue, I have a way to make these people let you go to the front. Do you want to try it?”
Qiu Fuxue’s face clearly said he didn’t want to. He knew from Yujian’s expression that it wouldn’t be a good idea.
However, Yujian didn’t wait for his permission. He shot to the back of the line.
He cleared his throat, took a deep breath, and shouted loudly, “Sect Leader Qiu has arrived—!!”
The crowd was silent for a moment, then they all turned to look. Many of the locals recognized Qiu Fuxue and moved to the side.
“Sect Leader Qiu…”
“Sect Leader Qiu, please go first!”
“Please…”
Qiu Fuxue’s expression was blank, but his vision was darkening.
A dignified immortal lord and sect leader was being avoided like a street thug.
These people lived under his protection, but they also feared him, and could only show this kind of respect when they saw him.
Yujian giggled beside him, pulling on Qiu Fuxue’s sleeve. They walked through the long line and went straight to the divine doctor.
The divine doctor was hunched over his small stall, his hand propping up his face. He watched them with a half-smile.
Yujian saw the other person’s face. His mouth suddenly pouted, and his eyes turned red.
The next second, the boy sobbed and threw himself at the man. “Wahhh—! Master… I missed you so much!!”
Qingshu (青疏) caught the little guy steadily. He flicked his forehead and scolded him with a laugh, “You little rascal. You miss me, and yet you ran away to this place alone!”
“Wuwuwu… I did it for brotherhood…”
After Yujian had cried his fill, the master and disciple finally separated. Qiu Fuxue walked up.
His sword, Zhengxin, was unsheathed. He showed no mercy, pointing it at Qingshu’s vital point. His voice, as cold as a thousand-year-old ice, said, “Illegally entering the barrier between the immortal and demon realms is a capital offense.”
