- Chapter 59 - The Snow on the Barren Mountain
The young man held the wine jug for a moment, then returned to normal, smiling charmingly. “So, you like to play this way, young master. I will obey you.”
With that, he tilted his head and drank the liquid in the wine jug.
The clear liquid fell onto his crimson lips. Qiu Fuxue saw clearly that the young man only took a few sips. Most of it flowed from the corners of his mouth, drenching his clothes.
“Cough cough… cough!”
The wine jug was empty. The young man coughed, covering his chest. His face was flushed, and his eyes, filled with desire, looked at Qiu Fuxue. “How did I do? Is my performance to your liking, young master?”
“I’m satisfied,” Qiu Fuxue said softly. He had put some of his spiritual energy in the wine. A demon would feel unbearable pain after drinking it.
Of course, it was also possible that this small amount of spiritual energy would pose no threat to a powerful fiend.
Qiu Fuxue slowly moved closer, looking Chun’er up and down. He asked knowingly, “Is your name Chun’er?”
“Yes.” The young man looked shy, but his hands didn’t hesitate to open his already revealing clothes even more.
Qiu Fuxue’s grip on his sword tightened. He said in a low voice, “Why don’t you just take off these cumbersome clothes? It would be easier to see you.”
“Oh…” The young man’s shyness deepened. He lightly bit his lip, and the thin robe fell.
At the same time, the blade of the sword flashed.
The sharp, cold light was aimed directly at the young man’s pale chest. The young man, however, lightly touched his toes to the ground, gracefully somersaulted in the air, and landed on the wooden table.
He giggled. “Are you not satisfied with my body, young master? To act so violently.”
Qiu Fuxue’s pale red eyes were as cold as ice, staring at the young man’s shoulder.
The young man followed his gaze and saw that his upper arm had been wounded by the sword’s energy at some point. Countless demonic butterflies flew from the wound.
“Oh! You found out!”
With the disguise broken, Qiu Fuxue twirled his sword and mocked him. “Do your followers know that the so-called Butterfly God looks like this in his spare time?”
“Reverence is in the heart, not in the body.”
As the young man spoke, sharp nails grew on his fingers. He tore open his own skin, and countless demonic butterflies burst forth.
“But I didn’t expect you to be so clever as to find me here,” the Butterfly Fiend (yudie, revealed its true form, roaring in the small space. “—Become my follower and sleep here forever!”
The Butterfly Fiend’s attack was fierce. Although he didn’t have his sword spirit, Qiu Fuxue had fought it before and handled it with ease.
He flew out of the wide-open window. His white robe fluttered as he cut down a large swarm of the demonic butterflies with his sword.
The illusion collapsed. In an instant, the world spun, and everything turned to darkness.
The dark void was quiet for a long time. The sound of howling wind returned. Qiu Fuxue suddenly opened his eyes. They were back in the desert. In front of him was a barrier created by his sword spirit, and the power of the demonic butterflies’ attack had been greatly weakened.
“A-Xue…?” Jiufang Cangze couldn’t see, but he could sense the subtle changes. “Did you find its true form?”
“Yes.” Qiu Fuxue answered, looking down at his shoulder.
In retaliation for him injuring its skin, the Butterfly Fiend had left an identical wound on his shoulder.
The wound wasn’t deep, just a shallow cut. Not even a few drops of blood had fallen.
Jiufang Cangze sensed something was wrong and asked with concern, “What is it?”
“Nothing.” Qiu Fuxue shook his head. This small wound shouldn’t be a problem.
With the illusion broken, Qiu Fuxue didn’t even need to act. The sword spirit clamored and cleaned up the remaining demonic butterflies.
The butterflies fell, tattered, onto the desert. The Butterfly Fiend’s complete soul flew into the air and merged with the crimson sunset.
Its remains turned into white powder, covering the hot sand. At first glance, it looked as if they were in a world of ice and snow.
A gust of cold wind swept over. Qiu Fuxue blinked hard and suddenly realized the desert had indeed disappeared. Below their feet was an endless snowfield.
“…Ugh!”
His fingers could no longer hold his sword. Qiu Fuxue clutched his shoulder and squatted down. The biting cold from the wound seeped in, spreading through his limbs and bones.
The master’s state was affecting the sword spirit at all times. As the snow swirled around them, the sword spirit shivered, suddenly flew back into the sword, and plunged into the spiritual core to hide.
Jiufang Cangze frowned. He also felt a chill, but it wasn’t as severe as Qiu Fuxue’s.
He reached out blindly and found Qiu Fuxue. The moment his palm touched his shoulder, a chilling cold pierced his heart.
“A-Xue, you’re hurt?!”
“Cold… cold…”
Qiu Fuxue was delirious from the cold. He unconsciously burrowed into the other’s arms, seeking the tiny bit of warmth he could find.
Jiufang Cangze cooperated and opened his arms, holding him close.
In the world of ice and snow, with its endless white, the two figures clinging to each other were exceptionally conspicuous.
The snow under their feet grew deeper, slowly rising from their knees to their thighs. Every step they took made a distinct “crunching” sound.
Qiu Fuxue was slung over the man’s back, wearing a tattered piece of clothing. His arms were so frozen he couldn’t move them.
His exhaled breath formed a cold mist. He said weakly, “Jiufang Cangze…”
Jiufang Cangze was only wearing a thin undershirt. His exposed skin was pale from the cold wind.
“A-Xue, are you awake?”
He couldn’t see the way. He could only carry the person on his back and walk aimlessly in the snow.
If they stayed put, they would only die faster.
Qiu Fuxue struggled to open his eyes. “There’s… a mountain… up ahead.”
“That’s not a mountain.”
“It’s not…?” The cold had numbed his ability to think. Qiu Fuxue paused for a while before realizing that the mountain looked like the entrance stone to the Moon Shadow Wall (yueying bi, 月影壁) he had once seen.
Jiufang Cangze answered his silence. “Don’t worry. I… I’ll get you out.”
“But you can’t see.” His injured arm was stiff and numb. Qiu Fuxue suddenly felt a sense of despair.
Jiufang Cangze had seen all of the nine fiends and knew what they looked like. So he had destroyed his own eyes to prevent the appearance of any fiends he hadn’t seen.
But now they were still trapped in this world of ice and snow.
The blood-red sunset hung in the sky, adding a strange feel to the ice field. Qiu Fuxue tilted his head and suddenly realized it wasn’t a sunset at all.
“That… is the crimson moon.”
Jiufang Cangze staggered a little with him on his back. His voice was hoarse as he warned, “A-Xue, don’t look.”
Qiu Fuxue obediently closed his eyes. Soon, sleepiness washed over him.
If I fall asleep in this place, I’ll probably never wake up again.
He had experienced death once before. He didn’t expect to be facing it a second time so soon.
“A-Xue…”
“A-Xue.”
“Mm…?” In his daze, he heard the person under him calling to him.
For the first time, he didn’t find that voice annoying.
The voice was light, as if it held a smile. “A-Xue, I’ll give you back one life. Please don’t hate me anymore, okay?”
His long lashes trembled. Qiu Fuxue didn’t answer. His consciousness faded away amidst the howling wind and snow.
The white mist fell on the stone, like a barren mountain bearing the snow.
