- After His Demise, the Demon Lord's Doted Canary Finally Sees the Light
- Chapter 56 - A Friend for Show
The sound of lively hawking filled the air. Qiu Fuxue () walked through the foreign-looking streets, his mind in a jumble.
Thousands of demonic butterflies had swarmed him, covering the last sliver of light. When he awoke, he was in what seemed to be an ancient tribal street.
What’s more, the rope tied to his waist was broken, and Jiufang Cangze () was nowhere to be found.
“You still can’t sense him?” Qiu Fuxue poked the little sword spirit on his shoulder.
The sword spirit shook its head. Jiufang Cangze’s demonic energy was too weak, making it difficult to pinpoint his location.
“Sigh…” Qiu Fuxue sighed. Just as he was about to go somewhere else to look for him, a vendor called out to him.
“Young master! Buy a few small slaves! I guarantee they’re all very obedient!”
Qiu Fuxue glanced over. Several dirty youths were tied up on the street, quietly waiting for the rich to buy them.
Slaves were everywhere in this tribe. Some walked behind their masters with iron shackles on their necks, making them easy to identify.
His divine nature sees all living things as equals. Seeing a life being so trampled underfoot was unbearable. But Qiu Fuxue also couldn’t casually interfere with these customs.
He shook his head, declining the vendor, and prepared to leave. Just then, the sword spirit on his shoulder started to jump.
Qiu Fuxue looked in the direction the sword spirit was pointing. It was a large tree behind the slave stall, and a bleeding sack was hanging from a thick branch.
His pale red pupils narrowed. Qiu Fuxue pointed his sword scabbard at the sack. “What’s in there?”
The vendor saw a potential customer and eagerly rubbed his hands. “Young master, that’s a new one. He’s not very obedient, but he’s a strong-looking fellow! He’d be a great worker! If you want him, I’ll give you a discount!”
A bad feeling arose in his heart. Qiu Fuxue stepped past the vendor and cut the sack down with his sword. As the heavy sack hit the ground with a muffled thump, a few drops of blood splashed onto the clean hem of his robe.
At the same time, he also saw the face of the person inside.
“I’ll take this one.”
He took out a spiritual stone from his robe, which transformed into the local currency, and threw it all to the vendor.
The vendor took the money and happily offered to help him carry the person away. Qiu Fuxue waved his hand in annoyance. He had the sword spirit transform into a terrifying humanoid shape to drag Jiufang Cangze into a secluded alley.
Jiufang Cangze was badly hurt. His handsome features were so bloody that he was almost unrecognizable.
Luckily, he was still alive. The moment he heard Qiu Fuxue’s voice, he reacted.
“A-Xue…”
His hoarse voice weakly uttered the name that had been in his heart. Qiu Fuxue didn’t dare use spiritual energy to heal him, so he could only place a temporary healing talisman on his external wounds.
“Looking at this, it seems the Butterfly Fiend (yudie, has a deep-seated hatred for you.”
Jiufang Cangze couldn’t see. He blindly grabbed a piece of Qiu Fuxue’s robe. “I killed his physical body, so of course we’re enemies… Are you hurt?”
“No.” Qiu Fuxue looked at his clean and shiny clothes. The Butterfly Fiend really didn’t seem to have done anything to him.
“That’s good.” Jiufang Cangze breathed a sigh of relief. After a moment of heavy breathing, he continued. “The Butterfly Fiend is good at creating realistic illusions… We are now… in an illusion he created.”
Qiu Fuxue took out a handkerchief to wipe the sword spirit’s dirty little body. “I’ve seen the characters used here on ancient murals. The illusions aren’t created from nothing. It must be an era he’s experienced.”
“Find him… and we can get out… Ugh…!” Jiufang Cangze vomited a mouthful of black blood. He put his hands on the ground, unable to recover for a while.
Seeing his miserable state, the part of Qiu Fuxue’s heart that was affected by bloodthirsty desires was now filled with a sense of pity.
“Three thousand years ago, when you fought with the goddess Taichu (太初), were you this badly hurt?”
Jiufang Cangze’s expression was dazed. “…Maybe. But at least my eyes weren’t blind.”
Qiu Fuxue’s mouth opened slightly, because he clearly remembered that in the instant the dagger plunged into those eyes, Jiufang Cangze hadn’t dodged. Instead, he had intentionally leaned into it.
He had deliberately blinded himself.
The words of suspicion were ultimately not spoken. Just then, a man who hurried past the alley caught Qiu Fuxue’s attention.
The man had a pendant on his waist that looked exactly like the Butterfly Fiend’s remains.
Qiu Fuxue took a step to follow him. After only a few steps, he suddenly turned back and saw Jiufang Cangze still sitting there in a daze, his hands carefully fumbling around, as if he didn’t know what was happening.
After a moment of hesitation, he went back. He created a sturdier rope and tied it to both of their wrists. He then coaxed the sword spirit to help Jiufang Cangze walk.
The sword spirit reluctantly accepted the task. Dragging a blind person was much slower, but luckily the street was empty, and they could still see the man.
“A-Xue? What’s wrong?”
Qiu Fuxue pulled on the rope. “I saw a man with something that looks like the Butterfly Fiend’s remains. Let’s follow him and see.”
“…Be careful. This is the Butterfly Fiend’s home turf.”
Even though it was a kind warning, Jiufang Cangze felt uncomfortable.
Qiu Fuxue didn’t say anything. He followed the man with his “family” in tow. The man finally turned a corner and entered a shop.
“…”
The Xingchun Tower.
Qiu Fuxue stopped in his tracks. He glanced at the person behind him. Thanks to him, he at least knew a little about this kind of place now.
The women gathered at the door, seeing Qiu Fuxue’s refined aura and his hesitation, voluntarily approached him. They asked in a sweet voice, “Young master, you look new here. Would you like to come in and sit for a while?”
He couldn’t just let the clue disappear. Qiu Fuxue tightened the rope on his wrist. He ignored the woman and walked straight inside with Jiufang Cangze.
“Hey, wait!” The woman stopped them in time, her gaze on Jiufang Cangze full of meaning.
“Young master, this one… is your slave, right? We have a rule here that slaves are not allowed inside.”
“No, he’s my friend.” Qiu Fuxue said without a change in his expression.
Jiufang Cangze’s heart warmed upon hearing this. At least I’m still considered a friend, not an enemy. Even though he knew it was just an excuse for show.
“This…” The woman looked at Jiufang Cangze’s ragged clothes and his many wounds, a bit flustered.
Even though Jiufang Cangze couldn’t see, he could feel the contemptuous looks being cast at him. He was used to being on top, and he wasn’t without pride.
“Never mind, A-Xue. You go in. I’ll wait for you outside.”
“That’s fine.” Qiu Fuxue was afraid that if he waited too long, he would lose the man. He found a corner for Jiufang Cangze and gave him a spiritual token. “You can’t see, so don’t wander off. If anything happens, just call me.”
He then cast a spell on the token so they could communicate at any time.
The sword spirit followed him into the Xingchun Tower. As soon as he stepped into the main hall, the pungent smell of perfume hit his nose.
Qiu Fuxue raised his sleeve to cover his nose, his sharp eyes scanning everyone in the room.
Just then, the sword spirit bounced, sensing the aura of one of the nine fiends.
