- Chapter 57 - The Butterfly God Causes Trouble
Inside the room, the man was happily enjoying himself, hugging the fragrant beauty in his arms and drinking cup after cup of wine. He was completely unaware of the danger slowly approaching.
“Bang—!”
The wooden door was kicked open with great force. The man in white, whose looks were like a heavenly immortal, held a sharp blade and moved like a demon from hell, inching closer.
The young man in the man’s arms jumped in surprise at the loud noise. When he saw someone enter, he shrieked and hid behind the bed curtains.
“Wh-who are you?!”
Angered by the interruption, the man demanded to know who he was, but his voice trembled because of the sword in the other man’s hand.
Qiu Fuxue flashed behind the man and effortlessly held the sword Zhengxin to his neck.
“Who I am isn’t important,” a cold voice said. Qiu Fuxue’s fingers gently picked at the man’s waist pendant. “I just want to ask you where you got this thing.”
The man’s clothes looked expensive. He appeared to be a nobleman of this tribe. Even with a blade at his neck, he remained arrogant. “Who do you think you are! Why should I tell you?!”
Qiu Fuxue applied force to his wrist, creating a red mark on the man’s fragile neck.
The man immediately surrendered, saying in terror, “Don’t, don’t… don’t kill me! I’ll tell you! This is something the Butterfly God (dieshen, ) gave me. He said it would grant our wishes!”
“The Butterfly God?” Qiu Fuxue frowned. He looked around the brothel room. There was a shrine in a dark corner, and the painting on the wall was in the shape of the Butterfly Fiend (yudie, ).
Worshipping the Butterfly Fiend as a god? But the owner of this room should be the young man. He didn’t see many people outside worshipping the Butterfly Fiend.
Afraid that Qiu Fuxue would actually kill him, the man quickly blurted out everything he knew. “Yes, it’s the Butterfly God! The Butterfly God only comes once a year. Each time he comes, he gives us a token. He protects us!”
“Where can I see the Butterfly God?” Qiu Fuxue deliberately scared him, shifting his blade an inch.
The man believed him and immediately burst into tears. “I, I… I don’t know either! The Butterfly God just left two days ago. You’ll have to wait until next year to see him…”
Seeing that he couldn’t get any more information, Qiu Fuxue put away his sword and walked towards the bed curtain where the young man was hiding.
Unexpectedly, the man, no longer in danger, immediately regained his arrogance. He ran out of the room and yelled, “You reckless bastard! How dare you threaten me! I’ll show you whose turf this is! Men! Capture this scoundrel alive!”
With that, a group of burly men holding weapons rushed out from downstairs and charged towards him.
They were just a bunch of rabble. Qiu Fuxue was not afraid. He gripped Zhengxin, ready to fight. However, just then, the spiritual token lit up with Jiufang Cangze’s voice.
“A-Xue, I feel like someone is watching me.”
“…It’s not a feeling.” Qiu Fuxue gave up on fighting them and flew out of the Xingchun Tower. “I caused a little trouble here. That man is a person of status. They must have noticed you were with me and are now targeting you.”
The other side of the token went silent. Jiufang Cangze choked. It seemed that ever since he started getting close to Qiu Fuxue, his path was also getting more twisted. After all, the Immortal Lord Fuxue (負雪仙君) never caused trouble.
The sound of intense fighting filled the air. The man who had lost his eyes sat obediently in place. He believed that Qiu Fuxue could protect him.
A moment later, the sound of fighting stopped. A soft robe brushed against his cheek. He heard a pleasant voice say, “More people are coming from behind. If I fight them, I won’t be able to look after you. We have to get out of here!”
Jiufang Cangze gave a bitter smile. “I’m a burden to you.”
This sentence was filled with thousands of emotions he couldn’t express. Qiu Fuxue pursed his lips. He had his sword spirit transform into a giant cloud of mist and carried both of them away.
When they were in the air, Qiu Fuxue got a clear view of the tribe. It was like a small town, surrounded by dense, endless forests.
This was an illusion, so it made sense.
The sword spirit carried them and stopped in the forest, far from the tribe. Qiu Fuxue jumped down easily. When it was Jiufang Cangze’s turn, the sword spirit seemed to throw a tantrum and roughly tossed him to the ground.
Jiufang Cangze was thrown head over heels. Qiu Fuxue laughed. “You hate him that much?”
The sword spirit nodded, then flew over to rub against its master’s cheek.
Qiu Fuxue was happy to indulge the little guy. He used his toe to poke Jiufang Cangze. “Do you know that you ruined my good thing?”
The words sounded familiar. Jiufang Cangze fumbled his way up. He no longer had the playful mood from before and apologized with guilt. “…I’m sorry.”
This man was usually so flippant. His sudden sincerity made Qiu Fuxue a little flustered.
“Cough… This isn’t the only bad thing you’ve done. You’ll get your karma eventually.”
Jiufang Cangze leaned against a tree and touched his sunken eye sockets. “This is my karma…”
“A-Xue, actually… there’s another way to leave the Moon Shadow Wall (yueying bi, 月影壁)…”
“What way?” Qiu Fuxue asked curiously.
Jiufang Cangze’s mouth opened. His pale lips were stained with dried blood. “Nothing, it’s just a guess.”
The sound of a blade unsheathing rang out. Qiu Fuxue’s face turned dark, and he said unhappily, “Are you messing with me?”
A smile finally appeared on the face that had been miserable all day. Jiufang Cangze’s tone was much lighter. “A-Xue is the most naive and easiest to trick.”
The sword spirit felt indignant for its master and flew to his head, bouncing up and down hard.
No one spoke for a while. The forest was eerily quiet. Not even the sound of birds or wind rustling leaves could be heard.
Qiu Fuxue looked at Jiufang Cangze’s profile and broke the silence. “Once you recover, I need to go back and continue investigating.”
“Okay,” Jiufang Cangze said hoarsely. He then suddenly asked, “A-Xue, what color is the sky right now?”
“The sky?” Qiu Fuxue looked up. “…It’s already dark. There are many stars, but no moon.”
The sky was dark, but the ground was as bright as day. This was clearly not normal.
“Since it’s dark, we should rest,” Jiufang Cangze said. He slowly lay down, leaning on the ground. “I’ll watch the stars with you.”
Qiu Fuxue thought he was tired. After all, this man often used sleep to replenish his energy. “You love to sleep so much. Aren’t you afraid that one day you’ll fall asleep and never wake up?”
“I am.” His raspy voice was filled with a sense of hardship. “But I’m a demon. Fighting, getting hurt, and falling into a deep sleep are inevitable.”
When Taichu (太初) created the demons, she was very unfair.
Qiu Fuxue lay down next to him. The sword spirit transformed into a quilt and covered him.
He felt bad enjoying it alone, so he pulled a corner of the quilt and covered Jiufang Cangze’s hand.
Jiufang Cangze was stunned for a moment. After feeling what it was, he let out a laugh.
“A-Xue, you truly are a good person.”
Qiu Fuxue turned his head and gave a soft hum.
