- Chapter 54 - The Beast's Eyes Fall Upon the Fiend Wall
While the people of the city were still immersed in the joyful atmosphere of the Flower Festival, a sudden disaster shattered the peace.
A large, ferocious demonic beast rampaged through the streets, its thick tusks stained with blood. The cries of the innocent could be heard nearby.
When Qiu Fuxue and his people arrived, the beast had just disemboweled a person, scattering flesh and blood all over the ground.
“Sect Leader, this…” The disciple behind him was a little flustered. Although he had been in the Thousand Thoughts Sect for a long time, in the past, Qiu Fuxue was the only one who handled disasters. The others had never fought in a real battle.
Qiu Fuxue understood their fear and didn’t force them. “You all set up the formation. I’ll take care of it.”
His white robes fluttered like a blooming lotus, and the sharp blade of Zhengxin flashed as it was unsheathed. The demonic beast lunged at the sword energy as if it were suicidal, its pace unhindered even as it suffered bone-deep wounds.
Qiu Fuxue’s expression hardened. The beast was not afraid of pain, as if it were a puppet controlled by strings.
He lured it into the formation in a few moves. With a spin, his white robes flashed away, and he quickly ordered his disciples to activate the formation, trapping the beast.
The beast was a low-level one at best. It only had brute force and no brain, so it was quickly subdued.
Jiufang Cangze had been watching from a distance, but the sight of the figure untainted by the mortal world always tugged at his heartstrings.
“A-Xue!” When the beast ran out of strength to struggle, he quickly took a few steps and went to Qiu Fuxue’s side.
Qiu Fuxue first attended to the injured and then told his disciples to go back up the mountain to get a healer. An ordinary mortal doctor couldn’t heal the wounds caused by a demonic beast.
After he was done, he glanced at the clingy figure behind him and said sarcastically, “Is this the only kind of demonic beast the Demon Realm can produce?”
“The one in the Abyss of Tribulation (wanjie yuan, is much more powerful. Ye Chu doesn’t have the ability to use it.”
A burst of wailing could be heard. Everyone looked towards the source of the sound. It was the family of the innocent person who had been disemboweled, weeping over the corpse.
Qiu Fuxue lowered his gaze. He only sent a disciple to comfort them. Sacrifice was inevitable, and the shackles in his heart had already been broken. At the very least, he could accept that he couldn’t protect everyone on his own.
He took a deep breath and stood in front of the beast, his back to Jiufang Cangze. “I will still settle the score with you for those two disciples you threw into the Abyss of Tribulation.”
Jiufang Cangze was stunned. He then remembered that incident. He had so many lives on his hands that he couldn’t remember whom he had killed.
He opened his mouth but found nothing to say in his defense.
Just then, the Sha Ying returned from searching the entire Sunset City, breaking the awkward silence.
“My Lord, we didn’t find any other demonic beasts.”
“That shouldn’t be…” Jiufang Cangze frowned in thought. “Ye Chu is a cunning strategist. There must be another ambush.”
The beast, which had been struggling fiercely a moment ago, now lay lifelessly in the formation, its eyes closed, as if it had completely given up on its fate.
Qiu Fuxue walked to one side of its eyes and looked at the trembling lashes. “It’s pretending.”
As soon as he said that, Jiufang Cangze suddenly remembered something and lunged at Qiu Fuxue.
“A-Xue—!”
Almost at the same time, the beast that had been pretending to be asleep suddenly opened its eyes. A rapidly spinning formation was etched in its crimson eyes.
Qiu Fuxue tried to use his sword to defend himself, but he was sucked into the formation by its immense power.
But just before he was completely absorbed, Jiufang Cangze grabbed his arm. However, his weakened body could not withstand the formation’s power, and both of them were swept into it, along with a cloud of dust.
“Ugh…”
The unbearable dizziness finally passed. Qiu Fuxue awoke from his daze, his bones aching as if they had been taken apart.
All he could see was a desolate desert. Not far in front of him, a figure was locked in a wooden torture rack.
His dazed mind slowly cleared, and he quickly recognized who the person was. “…Jiufang Cangze.”
He called out, his throat unusually dry, likely due to the desert climate.
The person opposite him didn’t move. He then realized that he, too, was locked on a torture rack, his hands tightly bound in chains.
“Don’t worry, he’s not dead.” A melodious yet familiar voice came.
The ugly mer-person, dragging half of his rotting fish tail, came to Qiu Fuxue. His silver hair had also lost its shine from when they first met.
“…Is that you?” Qiu Fuxue’s pupils constricted. He now knew where he was.
The goddess Taichu had set the Moon Shadow Wall as a trial, as if she had predicted this would happen to him.
Jiufang Cangze had also said that the power and souls of the nine fiends were still sealed in the Moon Shadow Wall. The mer-person had died outside, but his soul still existed.
The mer-person’s bony face stretched into a smile. “Little beauty, it’s been a while.”
His sharp, pointed nails slowly caressed Qiu Fuxue’s fair cheek. Qiu Fuxue frowned and dodged him. “Don’t touch me.”
“Still the same temperament as before,” the mer-person snorted. “Little beauty, after I left, the Demon Lord must have pampered you a lot… You are filled with his annoying aura, from the inside out.”
Qiu Fuxue lowered his eyes, saying nothing.
The mer-person reached out and clamped his chin, forcing him to look at him. “Especially those eyes. They were so beautiful before! How could they be tainted with this color?”
Qiu Fuxue clenched his fists. The chains couldn’t be broken, so he simply closed his eyes to calm himself down.
A moment later, he felt the mer-person let go. He heard a rustling sound as the mer-person’s tail dragged through the sand, followed by a muffled groan.
He opened his eyes and saw the mer-person’s sharp nails digging into Jiufang Cangze’s shoulder. The fresh blood dripped and disappeared into the dry yellow sand.
“…!”
Qiu Fuxue rattled his chains, making them clang. The mer-person turned to look at him, his once-beautiful eyes now terrifying.
“What? Is my little beauty anxious?”
Qiu Fuxue’s expression changed, and he said coldly, “Let me go. I’ll kill him myself!”
“Oh—?” The mer-person’s voice trailed off, as if he didn’t believe him. “Are you really willing to do it?”
A hint of cruelty flashed in his light red eyes. “He destroyed my spiritual core and humiliated my body. Why would I not be willing?”
“I see.” A strange smile appeared on the mer-person’s face.
He turned to Qiu Fuxue, and a moment later, two differently shaped daggers appeared in his palm.
“Little beauty, pick one. I’ll help you gouge out his eyes, and then you can do the rest. It’s not too late.”
A storm raged inside Qiu Fuxue. His eyes flickered back and forth between the two daggers. He finally chose the one that looked sharper.
A sharper blade would be quicker, at least it would reduce the pain.
Jiufang Cangze had already been woken up by the pain, but his consciousness was still a little muddled. He watched blankly as the disgusting mer-person said something to Qiu Fuxue, who then took a sharp dagger and walked towards him.
