- Chapter 53 - Gifting a Flower, a Sign of Affection
Qiu Fuxue rested for a while in the afternoon, then spent the entire evening busy with official matters. The candle in his room was still burning late into the night.
Li Yun felt for him and brought in a bowl of sweet soup made from flower dew.
“Senior Brother, you should rest.”
He scooped up a spoonful of the sweet soup, carefully blew on it to cool it, and brought it to Qiu Fuxue’s lips.
In the candlelight, Qiu Fuxue’s eyes curved into a smile. He parted his lips and took the spoonful of soup. “It’s very sweet.”
Li Yun looked at the messy documents on the desk and hugged his senior brother from behind. “You don’t have to work so hard, Senior Brother. I’ve already had the disciples strengthen the mountain’s barrier. The Thousand Thoughts Sect’s strength may not be what it once was, but we have nothing to fear.”
“That’s not what I’m worried about.” Qiu Fuxue held Li Yun’s hands, which were wrapped around his waist. “I alone am enough to deal with Ye Chu . I will surely protect the Thousand Thoughts Sect. I’m just worried that the demon army will harm the people of Sunset City and the villages at the foot of the Snowy Peaks.”
Li Yun was silent for a moment. He leaned his head forward, and his dry lips brushed against Qiu Fuxue’s pale cheek. “Senior Brother, a group of ungrateful people are not worth saving.”
When the Butterfly Fiend caused chaos, they had only failed to protect one person, yet the people clamored for Qiu Fuxue’s execution.
Qiu Fuxue lowered his eyes. In this position, if he were to turn his head slightly, his lips would brush against Li Yun’s.
Though they were only a step away, he chose to remain still.
“A-Yun, there are some innocent people among them.”
Li Yun tightened his arms around the other’s waist, his voice a little urgent. “But A-Yun doesn’t care about them. A-Yun only cares about you, Senior Brother. Senior Brother must stay safe…”
The hot breath came closer and closer, and gradually, it intertwined like their hands.
Li Yun grew bolder and slowly leaned in. His heart was pounding nervously.
Finally, when there was only a sliver of space left between their lips, Qiu Fuxue turned his head and pulled away.
He parted his lips and took a few breaths, his eyes darting away, not daring to look directly at Li Yun.
“A-Yun… I’m sorry, Senior Brother… isn’t ready yet.”
Li Yun’s body only tensed for a moment when Qiu Fuxue pulled away, then he returned to normal. He put his head on Qiu Fuxue’s shoulder, acting as if nothing had happened. “It’s not your fault, Senior Brother. A-Yun was too impatient.”
The silver-white hair ribbon hung in his black hair. He reached out and gently played with the little rabbit at the end. His heart was filled with a sense of satisfaction. “There will be plenty of time in the future. A-Yun will always wait for you, Senior Brother!”
“Okay…”
Qiu Fuxue lowered his head and played with his own fingers. “I have already sent a message to Lun Ling , asking him to gather the Sha Ying to Sunset City, so we can be ready for Ye Chu’s attack at any time.”
Li Yun knew that his Senior Brother wouldn’t want to rest until he finished his work. So he updated him on his own situation. “I have communicated with the other immortal sects and invited them to fight our common enemy, but they have all declined for various reasons.”
A hint of sarcasm flashed in Qiu Fuxue’s eyes, and his voice held a touch of coldness. “With the suspicious annihilation of the Luoshui Sect (洛水門), they are all busy protecting themselves, waiting to see the Thousand Thoughts Sect become a laughingstock.”
Li Yun’s eyes also grew cold. “They no longer believe in the resurrected strength of the Immortal Lord Fuxue . They’ll remember when the demons are at their gates.”
After helping him handle all the piled-up official business, Li Yun stood up and stretched. He told his Senior Brother to rest early and prepared to leave.
Just then, Qiu Fuxue seemed to remember something and called out to him.
He walked up to Li Yun, his face filled with an apologetic expression. “A-Yun, tomorrow is the last day of the Flower Festival, but with the current situation of the sect, I probably won’t be able to go down the mountain to celebrate with you.”
With that, he stretched out a finger, and a pure white snow lotus formed from his spiritual energy.
He placed the lotus in the other’s palm, his cheeks slightly flushed. “On the Flower Festival, lovers give flowers to one another. Your Senior Brother also wants to be a part of the good luck.”
Li Yun’s eyes welled with emotion. He carefully cupped the white lotus in his palm and hugged Qiu Fuxue tightly.
The next evening, the Sha Ying arrived in Sunset City as arranged. However, the risk of exposing their whereabouts was greater when they were all together.
With Ye Chu’s alertness, he might have already discovered them.
Qiu Fuxue brought Jiufang Cangze to the meeting, adopting the manner of “holding the Son of Heaven hostage to command the feudal lords.”
In the city’s inn, a few people sat around a table. The atmosphere was stiff.
To prevent them from flipping the table in disagreement, Lun Ling had his confidant take Xu Wan somewhere else.
Besides Lun Ling, the other Sha Ying didn’t have a good impression of Qiu Fuxue, especially Xiao Chang , who had once caught him at the bottom of the Stone Cave.
Xiao Chang’s face was naturally gloomy, and now his eyes were even darker, making people feel a chill.
“My Lord, since this is a collaboration, it is inappropriate for Sect Leader Qiu to keep you captive.”
Jiufang Cangze hadn’t even spoken when Qiu Fuxue retorted, “He is not being held captive. The Thousand Thoughts Sect’s gate has no restrictions on him. He’s the one who won’t leave. We haven’t even charged him for his stay.”
Jiufang Cangze suddenly remembered his leaky little wooden hut, and the fact that he had to carry the wood from the foot of the mountain himself.
“Cough!” He lightly coughed into his fist. “I have my reasons for this. You just have to assist Sect Leader Qiu with all your might.”
Xiao Chang was suspicious. His eyes darted around, studying Jiufang Cangze, as if to confirm whether the Demon Lord was being threatened or had been given some kind of spell.
For the first time, Jiufang Cangze felt that the Sha Ying’s caution was so hard to deal with. “Stop looking. I’m here of my own free will.”
Lun Ling, the only one who knew the truth, covered his face, unwilling to face any of this. He truly didn’t know how to explain to his comrades that the Demon Lord was willingly blinded by beauty.
The sunset outside the window was as red as blood. As if on cue, Lun Ling smelled a faint scent of blood in the crimson light.
Then, a commotion broke out in the street outside.
The door to the room was flung open with a bang. The Sha Ying were on alert and immediately surrounded Jiufang Cangze, protecting him.
Jiufang Cangze’s reaction was a little slower. When he finally found his footing, he realized that several people were now between him and Qiu Fuxue.
The disciple guarding the door rushed in, flustered. “Sect Leader! It’s not good! A demonic beast has appeared in the city and is hurting people! Many civilians are in danger!”
Qiu Fuxue stood up abruptly. Without a moment to spare for the forcefully protected Jiufang Cangze, he and his disciples flashed away. “Come with me to see!”
Jiufang Cangze was pushed to the window. He stuck his head out and looked down, only to see a long trail of blood running through the entire street. The smell was pungent.
With so much blood spilled, if the person was a mortal, they were likely already dead.
“My Lord?”
Lun Ling asked softly, waiting for his command.
Jiufang Cangze closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The bad feeling in his heart broke free.
“Go. We’ll follow them too. I want to see what kind of trick Ye Chu is trying to pull!”
