- After His Demise, the Demon Lord's Doted Canary Finally Sees the Light
- Chapter 49 - The Disappearance and the Case of Personal Favoritism
The Flower Festival brought a constant stream of people, and the morning noise startled Qiu Fuxue from his sleep. Countless images that had once filled him with fear flashed through his mind.
He sat up abruptly, holding his head until he calmed down. He noticed the figure sleeping on the floor by his bed.
Thankfully, it’s all in the past.
Last night, after returning from the city’s inn, Jiufang Cangze had refused to leave his room. He didn’t have the courage to get into the bed, so he had wrapped himself in a blanket and made a bed on the floor.
Qiu Fuxue argued with him for a bit but gave up. After all, he couldn’t see him from the bed.
Right now, Jiufang Cangze was still sleeping soundly. The blanket was too short and only covered half of his body, leaving his long neck exposed.
Having learned his lesson from last time, Qiu Fuxue leaned over the bed, peering at him from a safe distance.
Before he had reincarnated, Jiufang Cangze had been in a deep sleep for three thousand years after being severely injured. If he were to be injured again, would he also fall back into that sleep?
Looking at the defenseless and exposed vital point, a cruel thought suddenly arose in Qiu Fuxue’s mind.
As he thought this, his long, pale hand reached out toward the floor.
A lock of his long hair fell onto the other person’s face. Jiufang Cangze stirred in his sleep, mindlessly brushing his face twice, but he didn’t open his eyes. He just rolled over and continued to sleep.
This movement stopped Qiu Fuxue’s hand. He quickly closed his eyes and shook his head, trying to get rid of the messy thoughts.
Why did I suddenly feel a murderous intent?
The goddess Taichu (太初) had a great love for all beings, and her punishments were never without reason. For all these years, he had carried on that same character.
But just now, his murderous intent had appeared out of nowhere. It wasn’t to take revenge for what Jiufang Cangze had done to him. It was simply an unprovoked desire to kill him.
The person who had almost been killed was still sleeping soundly, clutching his blanket. Qiu Fuxue couldn’t stand it. He got out of bed and slapped him.
Today was the Flower Festival and the day that Wu An was to recommend disciples to Qiu Fuxue. He excitedly sent someone early in the morning to welcome Qiu Fuxue to the main hall, but he was surprised to see a bright red handprint on the face of his servant.
It looked like it had been freshly struck.
“Sect Leader Qiu, what’s with him…?” Wu An stammered, cautious about asking too much since the person was a servant.
Qiu Fuxue took a sip of tea. “It’s nothing. He made a mistake, so I gave him a light punishment.”
The lightly punished Jiufang Cangze: “…”
He didn’t know what he had done wrong just by sleeping to make the man so angry.
“I see…” Wu An’s mouth twitched. He got to the point. “Sect Leader Qiu, didn’t you want to take on a new disciple? I happen to have someone in mind!”
Qiu Fuxue smiled faintly. “Oh? Why don’t you tell me about him, Governor?”
Wu An spoke highly of him. “This person is from Sun-Moon City. He’s the only son of the famous wealthy merchant Liu. Although his ancestors have no history with immortal sects, this child has been exceptionally talented since he was little. Even the fortune teller said he was a great talent for cultivation!”
Jiufang Cangze stood behind Qiu Fuxue and scoffed softly. So it was someone trying to use backchannels. He had a feeling he knew where all the governor’s money was coming from.
Qiu Fuxue pretended not to see his intentions and played along. “I could meet him. The sect is in need of talented disciples.”
Seeing that the matter was halfway done, Wu An slapped the table. “Sect Leader Qiu, please wait a moment. That child rushed to get here for the Flower Festival and entered the city late last night. I’ve already sent someone to get him, and he’ll be here soon!”
Qiu Fuxue nodded, looking serious. He put down his teacup and noticed from the corner of his eye that Jiufang Cangze was covering his face and rubbing it. He quietly sent a message to him.
“Does it still hurt?”
Jiufang Cangze’s eyes lit up. He looked at Qiu Fuxue and nodded, a look of hurt on his face.
Qiu Fuxue messaged him back. “Heh, you deserve it.”
“…”
What did I even do wrong?
After teasing him, Qiu Fuxue was in a great mood. It seemed that this was how mischievous people found their joy.
Another ten minutes passed, and there was still no sign of the young master. Wu An anxiously peered at the door, turning back to Qiu Fuxue with an apologetic smile. “Perhaps there are too many people in the streets today due to the Flower Festival, which has delayed his travel.”
“No matter. We can wait a little longer.”
After a little more waiting, there was finally a commotion at the main gate, but it wasn’t the supposedly talented young master who arrived, but his servant.
“Governor Wu…! Governor Wu, something terrible has happened! My young master is gone!”
The servant was flustered, running and shouting. He didn’t notice the threshold as he entered the main hall and stumbled, falling to the ground.
Wu An lost face and scolded him loudly. “What kind of behavior is this?! Sect Leader Qiu is here. Tell us what happened in detail!”
Qiu Fuxue propped his head on his hand. He saw the servant’s face and his smile deepened. He turned to look at Jiufang Cangze.
Jiufang Cangze raised his eyebrow. Isn’t this the group of people who blocked our way and boasted last night?!
It seemed that the young master was the leader of that group.
As they looked at the servant, he, too, recognized them.
The servant was so terrified that he plopped down onto the floor, pointing at Qiu Fuxue. “You, you, you…!”
“Insolence!” Wu An was furious. He got up and kicked the servant.
The servant took the opportunity to grab Wu An’s leg, wailing. “Governor Wu! It was him…! My young master saw him at the inn last night, and they had a conflict! This morning, my young master was gone!”
Then he pointed at Jiufang Cangze. “And him! It was the two of them! I wouldn’t be mistaken!”
“Last night?” Wu An looked at Qiu Fuxue with suspicion. “Sect Leader Qiu, you went to the inn last night?”
Qiu Fuxue said nonchalantly, “I wasn’t feeling well last night and stayed here in the manor to rest.”
He then glanced at the person behind him. “My servant and I don’t hide our faces when we go down the mountain. If someone with bad intentions remembers us…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, and Jiufang Cangze continued for him. “There are many demons and monsters in the world. Who knows what you saw last night?”
Their teamwork was so seamless that the servant believed them. His face was filled with terror, as if he was afraid he had really run into something demonic last night.
Wu An didn’t care whether the young master was dead or alive. He only cared that if the apprenticeship didn’t happen, he wouldn’t get his money. He smoothed things over. “Don’t worry about anything else! The most important thing is to find Young Master Liu!”
Wu An mobilized the manor’s guards and went to the inn where the young master had stayed to look for clues. Qiu Fuxue, having watched the whole show, leisurely returned to his room.
They had only had a brief conflict last night, which was quickly settled by Qiu Fuxue. As for why the young master had suddenly disappeared, they didn’t know either.
But the circumstances of the disappearance were suspicious. The matter was definitely not simple.
The food at the governor’s manor was good. Jiufang Cangze declined the servant girl’s offer to bring food to the room and went to the kitchen himself, bringing back a large tray of food.
Qiu Fuxue’s craving kicked in. He put two small buns in his mouth, then as if he’d just remembered something, he went to the window and opened it.
The empty space outside the window, where a rock had been, was now gone.
