- Chapter 48 - The Immortal and the Demon Join Hands
Ignoring all caution, Jiufang Cangze threw himself towards Qiu Fuxue, pulling him into a tight embrace.
At the same time, all the runes on the magical formation spun rapidly, instantly forming a giant vortex that sucked them both in.
After a moment of dizzying disorientation, they landed. Qiu Fuxue had a human cushion beneath him, so he didn’t feel much pain.
He didn’t bother to address the fact that Jiufang Cangze had touched him. He pushed the man’s arm away and climbed out of his embrace, only to find an unexpected person looking at them.
“Qiu Fuxue…? My Lord? What are you…?”
Lun Ling was wearing a loose inner robe, his black hair was disheveled, and he was holding a steaming bowl of noodles. He looked at them, dumbfounded.
Xu Wan had said he was hungry late at night, and Lun Ling, having just experienced a breakthrough in his emotional barriers, was ready to do anything for the one he loved. He immediately went down to the inn’s kitchen to cook a bowl of pork-shred noodles. But as soon as he brought the bowl into the room, two figures suddenly fell from the ceiling.
Xu Wan was timid and easily startled. He was so terrified by the huge commotion that he hid behind Lun Ling and refused to come out.
Qiu Fuxue blinked and gave an awkward cough, not knowing how to explain the situation. He then kicked Jiufang Cangze, who was still on the floor, and told him to get up and explain.
Deep in the night, the lights of the inn were all out, save for one room where a candle was still burning.
Xu Wan rested his head on Lun Ling’s shoulder, his delicate face looking innocent and lovely.
Lun Ling knew he was tired, so he pulled him closer and found a comfortable position. He spoke in a low voice. “Wanwan likes Sunset City. Since there are a lot of cultivators here, the demons don’t dare to act recklessly. As long as we don’t run into any especially powerful cultivators, this is a good place to hide.”
Sunset City was within the Thousand Thoughts Sect’s territory. Hearing this from Lun Ling, Qiu Fuxue wondered if he should strengthen the guards down the mountain.
“Lun Ling, we followed the demonic energy and found that magical formation, but we were teleported here. I suspect someone tampered with you during your last fight.”
In Jiufang Cangze’s memory, that formation was not a teleportation array (chuansong fazhen, 傳送法陣) but an offensive one. That was why he had shielded Qiu Fuxue, not expecting that the important runes on the formation had been altered.
Lun Ling’s voice was a little disappointed. “Perhaps. A traitor appeared among my subordinates a few days ago. Although he was dealt with in time, I don’t know how many secrets he managed to obtain.”
As a Sha Ying (煞影), his loyalty was paramount. Jiufang Cangze could very much understand his feelings after being betrayed.
He stood up and patted Lun Ling’s shoulder, comforting him. “Don’t be sad. When I’ve taken care of Ye Chu (夜濋) and returned to Qingming Palace, I will personally arrange your marriage.”
After spending time together, Lun Ling and Xu Wan had confessed their feelings, and their relationship had indeed grown closer.
It was clear from Xu Wan’s behavior that he no longer saw Lun Ling as just a place of refuge but was treating him like someone he loved.
In front of his beloved, Lun Ling shed his usual careless demeanor. “This subordinate thanks you in advance, my Lord.”
Xu Wan, disturbed by the noise, grumbled in his arms and looked at the person behind Jiufang Cangze. “I like Sect Leader Qiu more. Can he arrange the marriage for us instead?”
Everyone present was stunned. Lun Ling said with a laugh, “Why?”
Xu Wan’s eyes were sparkling. “Because he’s so beautiful.”
“Good taste,” Jiufang Cangze said, nodding in agreement. He then turned to Qiu Fuxue. “Sect Leader Qiu, what do you think?”
A quick blush appeared on Qiu Fuxue’s face, and he glanced to the side. He was not good at socializing. The people he usually encountered avoided him. This was the first time he had been praised so openly, and he felt a little shy.
“How about this?” Jiufang Cangze’s eyes darted around. He leaned closer to Qiu Fuxue and said with a sincere attitude, “Sect Leader Qiu, how about we form an alliance? Ye Chu’s control over the Demon Realm is not good for either of us.”
Qiu Fuxue lowered his eyes, as if contemplating the feasibility of the suggestion. As things stood, Jiufang Cangze was indeed easier to deal with than Ye Chu.
“Alright,” Qiu Fuxue nodded, agreeing to the collaboration.
He took a spiritual token (Lingxi, 靈犀) from his robe and threw it to Lun Ling. “This is a communication stone. As a sign of my sincerity, you can contact me if you encounter danger, and I will send people to assist. In return for my help in your return to the Demon Realm, I request the Moon Shadow Wall (yueying bi, 月影壁).”
Lun Ling took the token, his brow furrowed in hesitation. The Moon Shadow Wall was extremely important to Jiufang Cangze. It didn’t seem like a good deal to just give it away so easily.
“No problem. It’s settled!” Before he could even consider it, Jiufang Cangze agreed without a second thought.
“But, my Lord…” Lun Ling tried to persuade him but was interrupted.
Jiufang Cangze looked him in the eye and said earnestly, “Lun Ling, being alive is more important than anything else.”
When a wall falls, everyone pushes it down. His Lord was trying to secure a way out for them.
“This subordinate understands.” Lun Ling put away the token, tacitly agreeing to the alliance.
At that moment, Jiufang Cangze started causing trouble again. He tugged on Qiu Fuxue’s sleeve. “A-Xue, I want a spiritual token too.”
Qiu Fuxue slapped his hand away. “You destroyed one before. How can you even ask for another?!”
Brought up to speed on the past, Jiufang Cangze pursed his lips guiltily.
They had to get back to the governor’s manor before daybreak to avoid being discovered by Wu An.
Having been kicked and thrown once already, Jiufang Cangze refused to go out the window and went downstairs to use the front door instead.
Qiu Fuxue was a step behind him. He stayed in the room and gave Lun Ling a few pointers about Sunset City.
The window was half-open. A colorful potted plant was placed on the windowsill. Lun Ling followed his gaze. “It was here before we arrived. I think the inn is growing it. Wanwan really likes it.”
Qiu Fuxue walked to the window. Just as he was about to take a closer look, a commotion suddenly came from downstairs.
“…Where did this stinky beggar come from?! How dare you block this young master’s way!”
They all quickly went outside and found a group of people who had checked into the inn for the night. The leader, dressed in luxurious clothes, was standing on the staircase landing, confronting Jiufang Cangze. Neither of them would give way.
Jiufang Cangze’s face was dark. These mortals had a lot of nerve to dare to bully him.
Seeing that he wasn’t speaking, the man puffed out his chest and threatened, “Do you know who this young master is? I am a personal disciple handpicked by Sect Leader Qiu of the Thousand Thoughts Sect! If you know what’s good for you, get out of my way!”
Lun Ling was about to go help his Lord when he heard this. He turned his head to look at Qiu Fuxue. “Are the Thousand Thoughts Sect’s standards that low?”
Qiu Fuxue narrowed his eyes in displeasure. “He’s just a lying scoundrel.”
With that, he walked down the stairs and stood behind Jiufang Cangze. “The Thousand Thoughts Sect doesn’t accept disciples who abuse their power like you!”
The man saw Qiu Fuxue’s extraordinary demeanor and shrank back, but he still didn’t back down. He questioned loudly, “And who are you?!”
“Qiu, Fu, Xue.”
