- Chapter 50 - The Treacherous Scheme and the Entrapping Net
After eating their fill, Qiu Fuxue received a message from Li Yun. It was nothing major, just a greeting for the Flower Festival.
To prevent Jiufang Cangze from making any more faces, he simply waved his hand and put him in the golden cage.
During the Flower Festival in Sunset City, it was customary for lovers to exchange flowers. Although he didn’t know if he and Li Yun were truly lovers, it would still be a pity to miss such a festival.
After the message ended, Qiu Fuxue played with the spiritual token in his hand, glancing at the person in the golden cage who was sulking with his back to him.
He suddenly asked, “Jiufang Cangze, can you demons also have feelings?”
The other man slowly turned around and looked at him. “Isn’t that obvious?”
Then, he gripped the bars of the cage, his eyes earnest. “A-Xue, I truly love you. The heavens and earth can bear witness to my sincerity.”
Qiu Fuxue suddenly took out his sword scabbard and slapped his hand, leaving a red mark. The other person cried out in pain and pulled his hand back.
“I was talking about Lun Ling . Demons are bloodthirsty. Can he and a mortal have a good outcome?”
Jiufang Cangze sat in the cage, rubbing his red palms. He said earnestly, “We would never harm the one we love.”
The moment he realized he couldn’t bring himself to kill Qiu Fuxue, he knew he had fallen for him.
Qiu Fuxue lowered his eyes, and a hint of a sarcastic smile appeared on his face.
He held the spiritual token and sent a message to Lun Ling.
The other person seemed to be in the street, and the faint noise of a bustling crowd could be heard.
“Lun Ling, did you hear anything strange about the person we had a conflict with last night?”
Lun Ling put his arm around Xu Wan (序挽) and led him through the crowded streets to a quiet alley. “No. The man is missing, and the governor’s manor has already sent people to search the inn.”
“But one thing: our two rooms were close last night, and I vaguely heard them say that their attempt to become a disciple of the Luoshui Sect had failed, so they had someone try to get them into the Thousand Thoughts Sect.”
Upon hearing this, Jiufang Cangze leaned back against the cage wall, crossed his arms, and said disdainfully, “I could kill ten of these useless people who try to squeeze into an immortal sect with a single thrust of my spear.”
Qiu Fuxue gave him a sideways glance. Before ending the message, he kindly gave Lun Ling a reminder. “It’s a custom to give flowers during the Flower Festival. Don’t forget.”
During the day, it was too crowded to move, so they waited until the sun went down and the sky turned dark. They then climbed over the wall and returned to the locked courtyard.
Qiu Fuxue wanted to find out what exactly had happened with that teleportation array last night.
When they arrived at the dry well, Jiufang Cangze, as usual, jumped down first. Qiu Fuxue followed, but just before he jumped, he noticed a few drops of fresh blood on the dead leaves by the well’s edge.
His heart sank. At that moment, Jiufang Cangze urged him to hurry down.
Upon landing, a thick, foul smell assaulted them.
Jiufang Cangze tore off a clean piece of his sleeve and gave it to Qiu Fuxue to cover his nose. Then he turned to the side, and the firefly’s light illuminated the path ahead.
Lying in the depths of the well’s tunnel was a bloody corpse.
Qiu Fuxue’s brows furrowed as he saw the body. “…It’s that young master.”
The young master had gone missing during the day, and now his body had appeared in the governor’s dry well.
The corpse had a large hole in its abdomen, with intestines and organs spilled out. It was a disgusting sight, completely different from his flamboyant appearance in life.
Jiufang Cangze carefully searched the body for clues. “This toad died a truly miserable death. The wounds look like they were caused by our demonic techniques.”
Qiu Fuxue agreed. “If the murderer shows up, my Demon Lord, you should reward him handsomely.”
“Naturally!” Jiufang Cangze patted his chest, then noticed that the corpse was clutching something in its palm.
Qiu Fuxue had also noticed this. He used his blade to pry open the corpse’s fingers and took out the item it was clutching.
It was a stone. Its dark brown surface was now stained red with blood.
His pale red eyes narrowed. A clear line connected the dots in Qiu Fuxue’s mind. “This is bad!”
According to custom, the Flower Festival was a three-day celebration in the city. The first day was the liveliest, and even late at night, the streets were bustling with people.
Amidst the noise below, a slender figure angrily pushed open a door and lit a candle.
Lun Ling followed him in, put his arm around the person’s shoulder, and coaxed him. “Wanwan, are you still mad?”
Xu Wan puffed out his cheeks and pushed his arm away, refusing to talk to him. But after a moment, the other person came close again.
He said angrily, “If you like giving flowers to others so much, don’t touch me!”
Lun Ling wasn’t bothered by being yelled at. He was happy to indulge this little one. He took the boy’s hand and gently shook it. “Wanwan, the flower was blown away by the wind. I didn’t mean to give it away. I only have eyes for you.”
Xu Wan pulled his hand away and went to the window to let the cold wind blow on him. He said sarcastically, “My, what a strong wind! It could even blow away a heavy flower!”
With that, he waved his hand in anger and accidentally knocked over the vibrant potted plant on the windowsill. The ceramic pot shattered, and the soft soil and a stone fell all over the floor.
The boy, like a small animal born in the wild, was easily startled. The loud sound of the pot shattering terrified him, and he stood frozen in place. Tears quickly filled his eyes.
“Wanwan!” Lun Ling hurried over to hug him, gently patting his back to soothe him. When the boy’s emotions had stabilized, he found some tools to clean up the broken pot.
Back in the room, Xu Wan sobbed softly in his arms, wiping away his tears.
Lun Ling’s heart ached for him. He gently kissed the boy’s hair. “There are still many pastry shops open on the street. How about I take you to get some osmanthus cakes?”
“Okay…” Xu Wan nodded gently, no longer caring about what had happened before. He took the other’s hand willingly.
The candlelight flickered, and the door was closed, plunging the room into darkness.
Not long after they left, the door creaked open again. A clumsy figure sneaked in. He was holding something, seemingly looking for a place to hide it.
He felt his way to the foot of the bed and hid the item he was holding underneath. Feeling that his mission was complete, he got up and left gracefully.
However, before he could leave the room, the candle that had been put out suddenly lit up, and the closed door was opened from the outside.
It’s over! I fell for the trap!
“Governor Wu, sneaking into someone else’s room late at night isn’t a good habit.”
The cold voice sounded like a devil’s whisper.
Qiu Fuxue blocked Wu An’s path. Following him were Lun Ling and Xu Wan, who had just left.
“You… you!” Wu An trembled all over in fear. He was about to jump out the window, but when he turned around, he saw Jiufang Cangze standing by the window.
The other man looked at him teasingly. “With your big body, you’ll break a few bones if you jump. It won’t kill you, but you’ll be a cripple.”
Eerie vines sprouted from the walls, quickly binding Wu An’s body and limbs, leaving him suspended in mid-air.
Qiu Fuxue flicked his sleeve and sat in a chair facing him. “Governor Wu, it’s time for you to explain yourself.”
