- Chapter 47 - The Deep Courtyard and the Lonely Well
Wu An held an impromptu banquet. All the manor’s dancers were present to perform. Their feet danced on a floor paved with jade, in the middle of which was a small pond. Golden and jade pieces were set into it to form the shapes of branches and leaves. The flowing water rose and fell, creating a scene of immense luxury.
Facing countless delicacies, Qiu Fuxue , who usually loved to eat, couldn’t find his appetite.
Although he hadn’t looked into it deeply, most of the people who came and went from Sunset City were cultivators, and gold and silver should have been rare. Where this wealth came from was food for thought.
Jiufang Cangze played his part, serving dutifully by Qiu Fuxue’s side. He meticulously deboned a fish, leaving only the pure white meat, and placed it in the other’s bowl.
But Qiu Fuxue didn’t eat a single bite.
Scattered at the bottom of the central pond were a few smooth jade stones for decoration, but a single ordinary, dark brown stone was mixed in with them.
Qiu Fuxue watched for a moment, then stood up and, citing that he wasn’t feeling well, left the banquet with Jiufang Cangze.
On their way back, Jiufang Cangze sent away the servant girl who was enthusiastically guiding them. “A-Xue, what did you see?”
Qiu Fuxue closed his eyes, his brows furrowed. “Nothing, just that stone… It made me feel very uncomfortable.”
He had secretly communicated with his sword spirit at the banquet. There had been no demonic energy, unless the other side’s ability to conceal it could escape the notice of a fiendish spirit.
And that stone, hidden among the jade, couldn’t be ordinary.
“This governor’s manor is more complicated than I thought.”
Back in the courtyard, a swing was tied to a large tree. Qiu Fuxue, suddenly feeling a bit playful, went and sat on it.
Jiufang Cangze slowly pushed him from behind. “All I do now is serve you. It’s time to put your little sword spirit to use.”
Qiu Fuxue held the thick ropes of the swing, making up for the childhood he never had. “He’s still little. We can’t overwork him.”
Despite his words, he still summoned Zhengxin. The sword spirit, a small ball of black mist, floated onto Qiu Fuxue’s shoulder. The latter whispered something to it, and the ball of mist bounced twice, then flew over the wall and disappeared.
Qiu Fuxue stayed on the swing until sunset, when the sword spirit finally flew back.
Jiufang Cangze was sleeping soundly under the tree. Qiu Fuxue looked at the blade in his hand and then used the hilt to knock on his head.
“Ow!”
“The goddess said you slept for three thousand years. Haven’t you had enough?”
Jiufang Cangze covered his head with his hands, purposefully squeezing out a tear to look pitiful. “I can only regain my strength by sleeping…”
But his plea for sympathy didn’t soften Qiu Fuxue’s heart. “It’s already dark. Come with me.”
The sword spirit rolled around in mid-air. Jiufang Cangze felt like it was mocking him.
Qiu Fuxue placed a spell on Jiufang Cangze to hide his form. Following the sword spirit’s guidance, they brazenly walked past the patrolling guards and arrived at a locked courtyard.
The lock was covered in rust, indicating that no one had been here for a long time.
Jiufang Cangze stroked his chin. “Need me to pick the lock?”
Qiu Fuxue gave him a glance, then his body flickered as he flew over the high wall. The sword spirit followed closely.
Jiufang Cangze: “…”
It seems I’m the only useless one now.
He reluctantly patted the wall and called out softly. “A-Xue, what about me—!”
Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared before him. He instinctively closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he was already inside the courtyard.
The sword spirit took the opportunity to bounce on his head a couple of times, showing off its power.
Jiufang Cangze waved his hand but couldn’t get rid of it. He wanted to use force but seemed to have some reservations. Under Qiu Fuxue’s cold gaze, he reluctantly pulled his hand back.
That little dog is riding on its master’s power!
“The Demon Lord can endure humiliation for a greater cause. Truly admirable.”
Jiufang Cangze pursed his lips and mumbled, “That’s how you were when you begged me for help, too.”
The sound of something slicing through the air rang in his ears, accompanied by a scream he couldn’t get out. Jiufang Cangze clutched his arm. Even through his sleeve, he could feel that the spot where he was just hit was swollen.
Qiu Fuxue retracted his sword scabbard, his face calm, but a mist of blood rolled in his pale red eyes.
His body, which was reconstructed with the power of a demon lord’s spiritual core, seemed to have picked up some of the demon’s bad habits, like… a thirst for killing and cruelty.
This abnormal reaction was not lost on Jiufang Cangze. A demon’s murderous intent was controlled by their own power. Just like him now, without any power, he didn’t have such evil thoughts.
But Qiu Fuxue had absorbed a lot of spiritual energy in the Taichu Immortal Realm, and his cultivation had greatly increased. The demon’s killing intent would slowly begin to manifest itself in the future.
To save his own arm, Jiufang Cangze quickly pointed to the lonely, dry well in the courtyard, diverting the other’s attention.
“A-Xue, look! According to the stories, someone must have died in there!”
Just as he had hoped, the mist of blood in Qiu Fuxue’s eyes dispersed.
“No wonder half of the books in the library were disguised as romance novels,” Qiu Fuxue said, staring at him.
His little secret was discovered. Jiufang Cangze’s gaze shifted guiltily. “Well, you still read them every day.”
The small courtyard hadn’t been cleaned in a long time and was covered in fallen leaves. A quiet rustle could be heard when they stepped on them.
Qiu Fuxue looked around. The courtyard was empty except for the single dry well.
He asked the sword spirit, “Is it in that well?”
The sword spirit bounced its head in affirmation.
The sky was pitch-black, with only the moonlight. Qiu Fuxue lit a firefly to illuminate the area and leaned over the well’s edge to look down.
It was completely dark inside, with no bottom in sight. But according to the sword spirit, a passage that led to an unknown place was hidden within, and it was tinged with demonic energy.
To be safe, he used his sword to threaten Jiufang Cangze to jump down.
Jiufang Cangze tearfully asked for a life-saving talisman. “You’ll regret it when you’ve lost me.”
“Less talk,” Qiu Fuxue said, finding his hesitation annoying. He lifted his foot and kicked him down.
Soon after, a muffled thud of a heavy object hitting the ground and a barely audible scream came from below.
It seems the well isn’t very deep.
Before jumping down himself, Qiu Fuxue noticed the strange rock hidden in the fallen leaves by the well’s edge.
The governor’s manor really did have a lot of rocks.
His robes fluttered as he landed. Another scream came from below. Qiu Fuxue flicked his sleeve and stepped on Jiufang Cangze’s back to illuminate the path ahead.
The path was narrow, barely wide enough for one person to pass. Jiufang Cangze, his face covered in dirt, got up and once again took the lead as bait.
The faint light illuminated the way. After a while, the person in front suddenly stopped. Qiu Fuxue was deep in thought and didn’t notice, crashing right into him.
“…What are you doing?!” With a bit of dirt on his forehead, Qiu Fuxue said angrily.
Jiufang Cangze looked wronged. He moved to the side to let him pass. “It’s the end of the road.”
The end of the path was a stone wall, and the demonic energy that the sword spirit sensed was emanating from inside the wall.
Qiu Fuxue glared at him. He stood in front of the stone wall, and a sharp flash of sword light broke the wall’s disguise.
What was revealed was a strange, glowing magical formation.
Jiufang Cangze looked at the complex patterns on it, feeling a strange sense of familiarity. A few special symbols on the intricate formation began to rotate. Realizing what it was, his crimson eyes shrank.
“A-Xue! Be careful!”
