- Chapter 41 - The Red Fruit Fails to Break the Emotional Barrier
After kneeling at the sect gate for three hours, Jiufang Cangze , who was thick-skinned and just as tough, limped over to the Sect Leader’s quarters.
Perhaps Qiu Fuxue was tired of his antics because he had replaced all the guards. This time, getting in wasn’t as easy as before.
He was chased away from the door, his legs numb. Jiufang Cangze secretly noted down the names of the guards who had wronged him before turning and heading to the quiet back mountain.
Inside the room, Li Yun was helping his senior brother with paperwork, keeping a close eye on Jiufang Cangze’s whereabouts.
“We can’t let him continue like this,” Li Yun said. “He’ll turn the sect into a chaotic mess sooner or later.”
Qiu Fuxue shook his head. “We haven’t heard any movement from the Demon Realm. Although this balance will eventually break, it absolutely cannot be because of us.”
In this situation, waiting to be attacked was much safer than striking first.
Until they fully understood the Moon Shadow Wall, they had to ensure Jiufang Cangze’s safety.
Li Yun neatly sorted the finished documents. He looked up, his eyes resting on Qiu Fuxue’s profile. His senior brother looked far less healthy than he did in the Immortal Realm. “Senior Brother, you’re working too hard.”
Qiu Fuxue gave a gentle smile. “A person in a position of power must take on their responsibilities. Since I’ve accepted this burden, this is what I must do.”
In Li Yun’s memory, his senior brother had always been cold, so cold that people kept their distance, and it was the same with him.
But this didn’t stop him from loving his senior brother, from wanting to give everything he had to him.
Finally, his devotion had paid off. He had become the person his senior brother trusted and was closest to.
With most of the work done, Li Yun quietly leaned in and rested his head on Qiu Fuxue’s shoulder.
“Senior Brother, the disciple selection is ready for a few days from now. But since Dongze and his allies still have some power, the various branches of the sect need to be reorganized.”
The Thousand Thoughts Sect had deep roots and had been the leading immortal sect for years, thanks to Qiu Fuxue.
The disciple selection was held once every ten years, but it had been less than ten years since the last one. This decision was made for two reasons: First, Qiu Fuxue’s capture by the demons and Yuan Lietian’s corruption had shaken the morale of the people, making the Thousand Thoughts Sect’s position as the leading sect precarious. Second, after completely wiping out Yuan Lietian’s faction, the sect’s disciples had been reduced by nearly half, so they urgently needed new blood.
If Qiu Fuxue wanted to bring the Thousand Thoughts Sect back to its peak, he knew he would have to get busier every day.
“I trust you to handle it,” Qiu Fuxue said, lowering his head to gently tuck a few loose hairs behind Li Yun’s ear. “Without A-Yun, I don’t know what I would have done.”
He had been able to return to the Immortal Realm’s place of origin and get Taichu’s help all thanks to Li Yun.
Li Yun hugged his arm like a child and suddenly remembered something. “Senior Brother, has your emotional barrier broken yet?”
Qiu Fuxue was stunned by the question. He touched his chest and stammered, “I… I can’t feel it since I woke up from my slumber…”
Not being able to feel it was a problem.
Maybe it had already broken, and he just didn’t know it.
Li Yun’s heart slowly sank. He didn’t want anyone else to have his senior brother’s affection.
“Your pure spiritual body is special, Senior Brother. Maybe it’ll be fine after a few more days of rest.”
“A-Yun is right,” Qiu Fuxue nodded, trying to end the conversation.
Li Yun’s long eyelashes fluttered. He was so captivated that he reached out and touched them, then his eyes were drawn to the beauty mark at the corner of his senior brother’s eye.
He was still just a child, after all.
Qiu Fuxue wasn’t annoyed by such an intimate gesture. He found it a bit childish.
He chuckled softly. “A-Yun, you’re so grown up. Why are you still so mischievous?”
Li Yun’s cheeks flushed with a noticeable blush once he realized what he had done. “Senior Brother, you’re just too beautiful…”
“Bang—!”
Suddenly, the door was kicked open, and a voice called out. “A-Xue! I just picked these fruits. They’re so sweet. Come and have a taste!”
Qiu Fuxue’s hand slipped, and he snapped the wolf-hair brush in his hand.
Li Yun stood up in a flash. “How did you get in?!”
Jiufang Cangze finally noticed the annoying person was there. He gave him a contemptuous look and moved aside, letting him see the guards lying on the ground.
A few broken fruits were scattered on the floor. Jiufang Cangze had used just those to take down all the guards.
“Sect Leader! He played dirty!” The guards picked themselves up from the ground, complaining indignantly.
Qiu Fuxue pressed his temples, which were throbbing with pain. He waved a hand, telling them to close the door.
Then, he turned a cold face to the demon whose hair was still decorated with grass leaves. “Haven’t you knelt long enough?”
Jiufang Cangze, with a bunch of fruits in his arms, shook his head vigorously. He then nodded, but still felt something was off.
Li Yun’s face looked grim. “The back mountain is a forbidden area. Ordinary disciples are forbidden from entering. Those who break the rules will be punished according to the sect’s regulations.”
“I’m not a disciple of the Thousand Thoughts Sect. Your rules can’t bind me.”
Jiufang Cangze ignored him, arranging the fruits on the desk from largest to smallest. He clapped his hands proudly when he was done.
Qiu Fuxue looked over the row of red fruits. “Anyone who enters the Thousand Thoughts Sect must follow its rules.”
“A-Xue…” Jiufang Cangze leaned on the desk, his long, narrow phoenix eyes showing a hint of innocence.
He changed the subject. “A-Xue, I heard the sect selection is about to begin. What do you think of my talent?”
“What do you want?”
Qiu Fuxue threw the broken brush aside. The ink splattered and landed right on Jiufang Cangze’s face.
The demon lord didn’t seem to notice the ink. “Let me join your sect. I’ll call you ‘Shizun’ from now on. How does that sound?”
“It doesn’t,” Qiu Fuxue coldly refused. “I’m not accepting any disciples in this selection, and the Thousand Thoughts Sect doesn’t accept disciples with evil hearts.”
“Tsk, look at you. I’m devoted to you. How can I have an evil heart?”
“Then why don’t you cut your heart out and let us see?!” Li Yun had had enough. He used his sword scabbard to shove the man off the desk.
The hard scabbard struck his wrist, leaving a red mark.
Jiufang Cangze winced in pain and glared fiercely at him. “You think I’m afraid?”
Qiu Fuxue poked a bright red fruit with his long, pale fingers, his other hand propping up his chin. He waited quietly until the two were at their most tense, then he touched the heart’s blood pearls on his wrist.
Jiufang Cangze crumpled to his knees. His heart felt as if it were being stabbed and twisted by a blade. Blood rushed up his throat, and he tasted something sweet and metallic.
Qiu Fuxue patted his robes and stood up, looking down at him. “Jiufang Cangze trespassed into a forbidden area. Three days of solitary confinement.”
Jiufang Cangze groaned on the ground, blood staining his lips and clothes. Feeling the presence of the man in front of him, he somehow found the strength to get up.
“A-Xue…” He raised his grimy face and reached out to grab a corner of the man’s clean, flawless robe. “If my pain… can lessen the resentment in your heart… I’m willing to bear it…”
Qiu Fuxue simply walked away. The hand fell empty, but the hem of his robe brushed the back of Jiufang Cangze’s head. “You are not worthy.”
