- Chapter 7 - So That Is How It Is
When Huo Xun asked Sang Luo if he was injured, the young man simply shook his head with a look of detachment. That icy indifference in his eyes made Huo Xun pause.
He could sense the sadness Sang Luo occasionally let slip, a vulnerability so fragile it evoked pity. Sang Luo likely did not realize that when sorrow touched those peach-blossom eyes, he appeared utterly breakable, as if he might dissipate at the slightest touch. Sang Luo always projected an unapproachable aura, and his subtle emotions were no different. His inner self seemed encased in stubborn ice, allowing others to touch only the cold, hard surface. Any attempt to go deeper was immediately blocked.
Strangely, Huo Xun did not dare to ask further. It felt as though silence was the only way to maintain their current peace. Yet, stripped of pretense, their relationship was decayed and rigid, leaving them forever facing one another from a great distance. This state of self-deception was uncharacteristic of Huo Xun.
Ultimately, his myriad thoughts settled into a soft sigh. Huo Xun chose to accept the situation and chose to escape.
“Is that so? That is good then.”
Sang Luo withdrew his gaze without a reply. They stood very close, near enough to catch each other’s unique scents, yet they seemed destined never to reach one another, complex and distant.
The morning competition concluded, and Huo Xun prepared lunch again. They currently had two hundred yuan in funds because of the third-place reward from the previous day, which doubled the prize for the next task. They were currently the wealthiest pair. The ingredients in the kitchen would likely last for two days, after which they would have to purchase their own.
This variety show featured only one task per day, leaving the rest of the time for free activities. The production team did not interfere, aiming to encourage natural connections between the guests. As expected, Chen Jing suggested a game of Truth or Dare. It was a cliché game but a high-interest one for the audience, especially since their favorite stars were participating.
Predictably, the fans in the live stream were already impatient.
[Ask him, ask him! Ask CEO Huo who he likes! We all want to know!]
[Ask Movie Star Bai if he has ever been in a relationship!!]
[First, ask what the relationship is between Movie Star Bai and CEO Huo!]
[Is no one curious about Sang Luo? That beauty is incredible! My heart is racing; his looks are legendary!]
[Agreed! I am curious if he is a celebrity or a civilian.]
[Probably not a celebrity; if he were, there is no way there would be zero news about him.]
Questions flooded the screen, but unfortunately, the guests could not see them. Chen Jing grabbed a bottle from the kitchen and beckoned the others over. Whether by design or coincidence, he sat to the left of Sang Luo, while Huo Xun sat to Sang Luo’s right. Sang Luo had never played this game before. After learning the rules, he felt a spark of curiosity.
“Sang Luo, have you played this?” Chen Jing gestured with the bottle. “If you choose truth, you are not allowed to dodge the question.”
Sang Luo looked over calmly, his eyes devoid of any ripples. “I know.”
“Hehe, good.”
Chen Jing spun the bottle. The first person it pointed to was Bai Chen.
“I choose truth,” Bai Chen said without hesitation, his charming eyes fixed on the group.
“Then, has Movie Star Bai ever been in a relationship?”
“No.”
Chen Jing nodded dismissively; he was not particularly curious anyway. Next, Bai Chen spun the bottle, and it landed on Sang Luo.
“What do you choose?”
Sang Luo thought he detected a hint of anticipation in Bai Chen’s gaze.
“Dare,” Sang Luo replied.
Bai Chen pursed his lips, a dark glint flashing briefly in his eyes. However, he maintained his refined and polite demeanor. “Then spin around a few times.”
Sang Luo did as he was told without hesitation. Chen Jing looked disappointed, clearly hoping for a chance to target Sang Luo more aggressively. The next few rounds were dull until Number One chose truth.
“What is your type?”
“I like girls,” Qin Yibing said, glancing at Number Six as if hinting at something.
“Wow!” Liu Zhiya feigned surprise. “No wonder I thought you were a bit strange.”
Qin Yibing looked up and squinted at her, her voice commanding. “I think you are strange too, strangely talkative.”
Liu Zhiya’s face stiffened. “You must have misunderstood. I was just trying to liven up the atmosphere.”
“You misunderstood too. I was just joking.”
Despite her words, there was no trace of a smile on Qin Yibing’s face. The more obvious Liu Zhiya’s forced smile became, the more her internal rage flared. She silently reminded herself that Qin Yibing was the young lady of the Qin family and possessed a background that should not be provoked. She had at least that much self-awareness.
Chen Jing watched all of this unfold. His eyes darted around. “So, is the person Sister Yibing likes here?”
Qin Yibing brushed back her hair and admitted it quite frankly. “Yes.”
Everyone’s gaze immediately shifted to the diva, Number Six, who avoided their eyes in embarrassment.
“Continue,” Qin Yibing said. She was about to spin the bottle when Liu Zhiya stopped her.
“Can I do it?” Liu Zhiya smiled and tried to take Qin Yibing’s arm, but Qin Yibing pulled away. The scent of Liu Zhiya’s perfume was too strong, causing Qin Yibing to frown, but she handed over the bottle anyway.
“Go ahead.”
A moment later, the bottle pointed at Huo Xun. Liu Zhiya was ecstatic. With a bashful smile and a forced, gentle tone, she asked, “Brother Huo Xun, what kind of person do you like?”
“Someone who talks little, has a calm personality, and is good-looking.”
Before Liu Zhiya could speak, Bai Chen laughed. The corners of his eyes tilted upward, giving him an air of effortless authority. “It seems CEO Huo is also someone who focuses on appearances.” He stopped just short of calling Huo Xun shallow.
“Do you have an issue with that?” Huo Xun did not take the bait, instead turning the question back on him. His expression was unusually sharp, and a faint light flickered in his dark eyes.
“Of course not.” Bai Chen relaxed his posture, the crystal earring on his right ear catching the light. Bai Chen had not worn any jewelry earlier; he had only put it on that afternoon.
When Sang Luo saw the earring, he pursed his lips slightly. He now had reason to suspect that Bai Chen also possessed memories of their previous life. He remembered that Bai Chen had been Huo Xun’s right-hand man, a general with legendary military achievements. And it was this very man who had delivered him to his death.
On that day, just as he was now, Bai Chen had been wearing that same white crystal on his ear. Noticing Sang Luo’s gaze, Bai Chen offered a gentle smile that carried a hint of malice. Sang Luo watched him silently for a long moment, and no one knew what he was thinking.
After a few more rounds, the game ended. Sang Luo was the first to stand. He nodded politely, his voice as clear and cold as a mountain spring in summer. “I will head up first.”
Huo Xun instinctively looked toward him as if wanting to say something. This abrupt moment caught Liu Zhiya’s attention. She looked back and forth between them, appearing to have made a discovery. Her pretty face twisted slightly.
So that is how it is!
