- Chapter 3 - My Driving Skills Are Terrible
The well-tailored, high-end suit clung to Su Chengning’s slender and elegant frame, accentuating his cold, ethereal temperament and lending him an air of noble refinement.
Within his beautiful peach-blossom eyes, an indescribable glint flickered almost imperceptibly. His long, curled eyelashes trembled slightly; when he looked up again, his expression had returned to a state of absolute calm.
“Such enviable brotherhood.”
His voice was very soft, as light as a white feather brushing against one’s heart, tickling it so gently that if one didn’t listen closely, they would think they had merely hallucinated the words in a moment of trance.
Tang Mo’s heart, however, throbbed violently because of this seemingly complimentary remark.
Thump.
Thump-thump.
The sound of his heartbeat was so loud that he frantically pressed his hand against his chest in fear, attempting to suppress the culprit that was betraying his nervousness.
Su Chengning lowered his eyelids slightly, his gaze sweeping lightly over Tang Mo’s chest.
Tang Mo found he was nearly unable to restrain his heart; the beast within his chest was clawing and thrashing, asserting its massive strength as if it were about to burst through his body.
Bastard, calm down, Tang Mo growled at the beast in his mind.
It was his brother who had done the deed; it had nothing to do with him. Why was he so nervous?
“No, it’s not… I didn’t,” Tang Mo steadied his mind and enunciated two short denials, nearly raising his hand to swear an oath to prove his innocence.
Su Chengning tilted his head slightly to look at him. “It’s not what? You didn’t what?”
His tone was somewhat casual, as if he didn’t quite understand Tang Mo’s answer.
From Tang Mo’s perspective, he had a perfect view of that peerlessly radiant and beautiful face. Even the slight furrow of Su Chengning’s fine brows carried an alluring curve, making Tang Mo reluctant to look away. He was terrified that if he blinked, the person before him would vanish.
“We aren’t… good brothers.” His voice was also very soft, carrying a hint of urgency to distance himself, yet he didn’t dare make it too obvious.
Su Chengning naturally understood the disdain for Tang Chen in his tone, but he didn’t point it out.
“What did you say?”
Su Chengning deliberately knit his brows toward the center, as if complaining that he couldn’t hear clearly.
“I wasn’t keeping watch,” Tang Mo said very clearly this time, adopting an air of honest urgency to clear the misunderstanding. “I had no idea my brother was here.”
After saying this, Tang Mo observed Su Chengning’s expression with nervous caution. Seeing that Su Chengning seemed to believe him, he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Su Chengning could easily see through his display of nervous, forced composure.
He deliberately asked, “Then, do you want to know what your brother is doing?”
Rolling around in the sheets, I know, Tang Mo thought. And you caught him in the act.
I thought you would be very angry, but looking at you now, you don’t seem to care.
Could it be that even after my brother did something like that, you can still forgive him?
At the thought that Su Chengning might give his brother another chance, Tang Mo felt an indescribable sense of stifling frustration.
If he gives my brother a chance, who is going to give me one?
Tang Mo felt very aggrieved, but he couldn’t say it.
Su Chengning had no idea what was going through Tang Mo’s mind; he was merely puzzled as to why the younger man had suddenly spaced out.
“Whatever he did has nothing to do with me,” Tang Mo said in a muffled voice, still not forgetting to distance himself.
Su Chengning found his behavior somewhat amusing.
Most of his memories of Tang Mo were formed during the six years after his death in his previous life. At that time, Tang Mo had already become a cold and ruthless man; he never would have shown such a petulant, childish expression.
This gave Su Chengning an unexpected sense of pleasant surprise.
It was as if, in his distant memories, there was a little boy who loved following him around, calling “Chengning-ge” over and over again. If he didn’t respond once, the boy would stubbornly keep calling all day long.
Such memories felt like they belonged to another world; even Su Chengning wasn’t sure if they truly existed.
However, meeting Tang Mo’s bright, dark eyes which were currently broadcasting a silent “I’m very upset but I won’t say it” protest Su Chengning felt a tremor in his heart.
He feigned anger and said, “He is your brother. If he committed a fault, it naturally concerns you.”
“Huh?”
I have to take the fall for his mistakes?
Tang Mo was ten thousand times unwilling. He wished he could flatten his brother into a meat patty the kind that could never be restored.
“Your brother did something to wrong me.” Su Chengning’s face went cold and serious. His tone was chilly, and the look he gave Tang Mo carried an unquestionable intensity.
“So, from now on, you must atone for your brother’s sins.”
“Why should his mistake be my—” Tang Mo was anxious to argue, but then it dawned on him that this might not be so unacceptable after all.
He asked uncertainly, “Chengning-ge, you want me to atone for my brother?”
Regardless of what the atonement actually involved, the mere thought that he now had a legitimate reason to see Su Chengning made Tang Mo want to say to his brother: Well done.
Su Chengning nodded. “Are you unwilling?”
“Willing, I’m willing!” Tang Mo was afraid he would burst out laughing like an idiot, so he desperately suppressed his internal joy and pretended to look aggrieved.
Su Chengning naturally noticed his expression. A tiny arc began to rise at the corner of his mouth, but he quickly pressed it down.
He said, “Then from now on, you have to listen to me. You’ll do whatever I tell you to do.”
Tang Mo thought: I’ve always listened to you; it’s just that you never let your gaze linger on me for even a second.
He nodded obediently, putting on a “I’ll do whatever you say” honest face.
Arriving at the underground parking lot, Su Chengning stopped in front of his car. The car keys gripped tightly in his palm caused a slight, stinging pain.
He came back to his senses and glanced at Tang Mo, who was standing quietly behind him. Finally, he pointed to the passenger seat. “Go sit over there.”
As Tang Mo sat down in the passenger seat, he heard Su Chengning let out an almost inaudible sigh.
“Should I drive instead?” he asked.
“You are not allowed to drive!” Su Chengning suddenly looked up and shouted somewhat fiercely. Tang Mo immediately straightened his back and sat perfectly upright.
For a moment, a strange silence filled the car. Only the sound of two breaths, varying in depth, stirred the quiet atmosphere.
“I have a license, and my driving skills are actually quite good,” Tang Mo said tentatively after observing for a few minutes.
“Driving skills?” Su Chengning let out a cold snort. His gaze swept over Tang Mo with blunt suspicion, making Tang Mo feel an awkward nervousness.
Tang Mo subconsciously swallowed. His mind raced and suddenly recalled some suggestive jokes his friend Wang Shu had told him before.
“A man must have two types of driving skills that are up to par.”
“One for the road.”
“And one for the bed.”
That year, he and Wang Shu had just gotten their driver’s licenses. At the time, Wang Shu wanted to drag him off to “practice” the other kind of driving skill, but Tang Mo had heartlessly kicked him away. He had even blocked Wang Shu for an entire summer.
It wasn’t that he was overly prudish; he simply didn’t like being excessively intimate with others, not even his best friend.
At that time, an undeterred Wang Shu had even climbed into his room in the middle of the night, pointing at him and saying sourly, “I only said that because your ‘hardware’ is so impressive. I just wanted to see what it could do.”
Tang Mo had responded by giving him a “butt-kick” experience, leaving two large footprints on his backside. The pain was so bad that Wang Shu had to lie face down on the bed for two whole days, watching gay films just to satisfy his curiosity.
“I wouldn’t dare compliment your driving skills.”
Su Chengning’s words were aimed at the “idiot” Tang Mo from his previous life, but Tang Mo heard it as a critique of his actual driving.
Tang Mo moved his lips sheepishly.
Fine, that “other” driving skill wasn’t something he was comfortable showing off yet.
Su Chengning had no idea that Tang Mo’s mind was currently filled with “lewd” driving thoughts. He kept the memory of the fatal car crash buried deep within him.
He didn’t forget to add an instruction: “In the future, don’t drive unless you have to.”
“Huh?”
Su Chengning shot him a cold look.
Tang Mo immediately promised, “I won’t drive. My driving skills are terrible.”
Only then did Su Chengning drive away from the hotel, satisfied.
Wang Shu was waiting anxiously, checking WeChat every minute, only to find that his best friend seemed to have forgotten him.
The chat history was still stuck at half an hour ago.
He hesitated for a moment, feeling that he needed to take the initiative.
Wang Shu: Mo-ge, what’s the situation? Give me a live update.
When Tang Mo received the message, he looked up at Su Chengning, who was a few steps away. Seeing that Su Chengning was focused on picking out ingredients, Tang Mo parked the shopping cart to the side and started fiddling with his phone.
Tang Mo: I’m at the supermarket.
Wang Shu was momentarily stunned.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a “catching them in the act” scene? How did it turn into a supermarket trip?
Wang Shu: Dumbfounded.jpg
Wang Shu: Brother, my brain can’t keep up with your pace.
Wang Shu: I give you three seconds to explain.
Three seconds later, he received a photo.
In the photo, a tall, slender man stood in front of a display shelf. His bangs slightly obscured the corner of his eyes, yet they perfectly allowed one to see the focus and earnestness in the man’s gaze.
He was looking down slightly, seemingly researching which ingredient would be more delicious.
Wang Shu: Drooling.jpg
The moment Su Chengning turned around, he caught Tang Mo’s action of taking the photo. He walked back, placed the ingredients in the cart, and tilted his head slightly.
Feeling guilty like a thief, Tang Mo clicked on the emoji Wang Shu had sent.
Su Chengning immediately saw that somewhat silly-looking emoji and raised an eyebrow.
“My classmate sent it,” Tang Mo explained as he tucked his phone away, mentally stabbing Wang Shu from head to toe.
“He’s the type who likes to send all sorts of strange emojis.”
“I usually don’t even bother replying to him.”
Su Chengning: “What’s your classmate’s name?”
Tang Mo: “Wang Shu.”
Su Chengning knew of Wang Shu. He was one of the few friends Tang Mo had who was incredibly loyal. In his previous life, when Tang Mo and Tang Chen were locked in a fierce struggle, Wang Shu had supported Tang Mo unconditionally. Even when the Wang family was suppressed by the “protagonist” couple, he refused to abandon Tang Mo.
Whenever Tang Mo fell into a crisis, it was always Wang Shu who stepped forward to mediate for him.
The character ‘Shu’ meant “timely rain.” In Su Chengning’s view, the Wang Shu of his past life had truly lived up to that name for Tang Mo.
“That’s an interesting name,” Su Chengning commented casually, only to see Tang Mo pout slightly.
This version of Tang Mo felt very interesting to him less tragic than the previous life, and more filled with childish innocence.
Turning around, Su Chengning hid the smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
“Didn’t you say you were going to cook for me?”
Tang Mo glanced at the shopping cart, then looked up at the thin, elegant young man in front of him. He spoke with a hint of dissatisfaction: “Chengning-ge, why did you only pick vegetables?”
“Didn’t you say I could pick whatever I wanted?” Su Chengning looked back at him, as if looking at a temperamental child.
“You clearly said I could pick anything and you would know how to cook it.”
“I…” Tang Mo was choked up for a second. “But we can’t just eat vegetables.”
Every ingredient Su Chengning had chosen was vegetarian it was as plain as could be. For a twenty-year-old young man, looking at these ingredients made him lose his appetite.
Su Chengning stepped aside to clear the path and crossed his arms, signaling, “You pick then.”
By the time the two finished picking what they needed, the cart was overflowing with various kinds of fish and meat. There was so much that even Su Chengning raised an eyebrow in surprise.
“Eating more fish and meat is good for the body,” Tang Mo said, finding an awkward excuse for having picked so much.
Su Chengning gave him a half-smile. “And here I heard that eating more vegetables is good for the body.”
Tang Mo: “…Both are good.”
As they went to check out, a young couple happened to be standing in front of a display shelf. Their intimate whispering made Tang Mo look over subconsciously.
Seeing someone looking at them, the young girl blushed and playfully nudged the boy. The boy looked at Tang Mo with some embarrassment, grabbed one of the items at random, and chased after the girl as she ran off.
Tang Mo walked over curiously. When he saw what was on that particular display shelf, a flush crept onto his handsome face as well.
“What are you doing?”
Su Chengning walked over and let out a soft, low chuckle.
The laugh was very light, yet it made the blush on Tang Mo’s face even more obvious.
Su Chengning pointed at the items one by one, his tone light with a hint of undetectable teasing: “Strawberry, apple, lime… there are quite a lot of flavors.”
Tang Mo’s gaze uncontrollably followed the direction of that slender, white finger. The redness had already spread to the tips of his ears and was showing signs of moving down his neck.
The supermarket wasn’t very crowded at the moment, and no one was paying them any attention.
Su Chengning seemingly brushed against Tang Mo’s shoulder by accident. Tang Mo felt a jolt run through his entire body.
Then, he heard a low, soft, and melodious voice whisper in his ear:
“I like strawberry flavor.”
“How about you?”
“What flavor do you like?”
