- Chapter 2 - I’m Giving You a Chance
Tang Mo crouched in a corner of the hotel corridor. Under the hallway lights, the sight of his tall, upright frame trying its best to curl up and reduce its presence looked somewhat comical.
From time to time, he poked his head out to glance at a room a few meters away.
The door to that room wasn’t fully closed, leaving a tiny crack. If one listened carefully, the voices of the people inside could almost be heard. Tang Mo listened with rapt attention, seemingly waiting for an opportunity.
At that moment, his phone let out a “ding,” startling him so much he nearly leaped out from the corner.
Panicked, he fished the phone out of his trouser pocket. An unread message leapt into view. He peeked toward the room once more before clicking the message open.
Wang Shu: Brother Mo, don’t say your bro didn’t help you out. I’ve leaked such big news to you; the least you could do is reply.
Just as Tang Mo finished reading, the next message jumped out immediately.
Wang Shu: Brother Mo, surely the scene of the affair isn’t so intense that you’re unwilling to share it with your bro??!
Wang Shu: That’s a bit unfair.
Wang Shu: We agreed to share our blessings as good brothers. You can’t go choosing a guy over your bro.
The barrage of messages caused Tang Mo’s breathing to falter for a few seconds. Finally, he replied with two words:
Tang Mo: Shut up.
Wang Shu: (^U^)ノ~YO! Brother, you’re alive.
Tang Mo: You’re too noisy. You’re interfering with my business.
Wang Shu: Business? What business? Eeee~~
Tang Mo thought for a second and decisively shoved the phone back into his pocket.
Less than a minute later, the phone started ringing incessantly again. Tang Mo endured it as long as he could before lowering his head to type with a serious expression.
Tang Mo: I am considering something.
The reply from the other side was fast and symmetrical.
Wang Shu: I am waiting for something.
The moment he saw those words, Tang Mo could envision the mischievous, cheeky expression Wang Shu would have on his face right now. As childhood friends, even if Tang Mo didn’t know everything about Wang Shu, he knew the guy possessed a burning heart for gossip.
Perhaps it was because he loved following celebrities, but he was exceptionally nosy. For a wealthy young master, anyone who didn’t know better would think he was a former paparazzi; he had mastered the craft perfectly.
Even the secret news that his brother had checked into a hotel with someone after last night’s cocktail party had been leaked to him by Wang Shu.
To be honest, the moment he learned the news, Tang Mo was excited. But beneath that excitement lay a deep, heavy worry because Su Chengning knew about it, too.
Tang Mo pressed down hard on his phone to send a sentence.
Tang Mo: I’m considering blocking you!
Wang Shu: I’m shutting up immediately… right now… X_X
The message was sent and then instantly deleted. Tang Mo stared at the notification, and three seconds later, he received a new message:
Wang Shu: [Image: Okay, I’m shutting up.jpg]
Tang Mo thought the guy was finally going to be quiet, but another message came through anyway.
Wang Shu: As a good brother, I still have to give you a reminder Brother Mo, your spring has arrived. Any later and it’ll be summer.
Tang Mo stared at the word “summer,” and a look of gloom gradually surfaced in his dark pupils. Wang Shu waited for a long time before finally receiving one heartless sentence from Tang Mo:
Tang Mo: Only you have a mouth that won’t stop yapping.
Wang Shu pulled a face at his phone screen and chuckled. “If you actually knew how to talk, Tang Chen wouldn’t even be in the picture.”
Having dealt with Wang Shu, Tang Mo had just put his phone away when he heard a heated conversation erupt from the hotel room. It continued until two heavy slaps rang out, causing his brow to twitch violently.
Inside, Su Chengning raised his head high, meeting Tang Chen’s momentarily distorted eyes.
“What? You want to hit me back?”
His gaze fixed on Tang Chen’s raised right hand.
Tang Chen wasn’t ugly. As one of the typical male leads, he was wealthy, handsome, and suave. In front of outsiders, he was always refined, gentle, and humble. However, a single slap had torn away Tang Chen’s hypocritical mask. Su Chengning felt the man was nothing more than this.
“Chengning, how did you become like this?” Tang Chen kept his right hand raised, looking at Su Chengning with an expression of disappointment.
Su Chengning was speechless. “What have I become?”
Tang Chen said, “I know you’re jealous right now. I’ve explained it to you I just had too much to drink last night. It’s normal for men to play around a bit when they’re out.”
Jiang Baiyu, clutching his burning right cheek, felt immense hatred in his heart, but his face remained innocent. He spoke up to explain: “Mr. Su, please don’t be angry with Mr. Tang. It’s all my fault. If you want to hit someone, hit me.”
He instinctively lowered his head, acting like he was afraid of being struck a performance Su Chengning found utterly ridiculous. Consequently, Su Chengning began to laugh without restraint.
Tang Mo rushed in anxiously. As he pushed the door halfway open, he heard Su Chengning’s clear, bright laughter. He stood there dazed, his hand against the door, his footsteps hesitating. Through the gap, he secretly peeked at the situation inside.
Brother Chengning doesn’t seem to be losing out.
Should I still go in?
Tang Mo wavered between playing the hero saving the beauty or being the scapegoat caught in the crossfire. If Wang Shu were here right now, he likely would have kicked Tang Mo inside to stir up the situation.
Su Chengning stopped laughing and raised a hand to lightly wipe a tear of mirth from the corner of his eye.
“My life has been quite dull lately; to think such a small thing could entertain me so much.”
Tang Chen’s brow furrowed tightly. He felt like he didn’t recognize the Su Chengning in front of him. In his memory, Su Chengning almost never went against him so brazenly. This sparked a strange sense of irritation.
In his mind, he had simply slept with someone. Even if Su Chengning found out, it was at most a case of jealousy; he could just coax him with a few words later. But now, not only had Jiang Baiyu been hit, but even he had received a slap for no reason. This deeply offended Tang Chen’s strong ego. Especially given Su Chengning’s current attitude not only was he not apologizing, but he was also being sarcastic.
If Su Chengning knew what Tang Chen was thinking, he would probably give him a round of applause and say: Tang Chen, you actually have enough of a brain to realize I’m being sarcastic.
The cheating was caught, and he had delivered the slaps. Su Chengning didn’t care what Tang Chen thought; he simply announced unilaterally: “I’m a person with a bit of a obsession with cleanliness. Since you love to play so much…”
At the word “play,” his gaze lingered on Jiang Baiyu’s fair face for a moment before he pivoted. “Are you an adult?”
Jiang Baiyu couldn’t keep up with his rhythm. He blinked and nodded. “I’m twenty.”
Su Chengning continued, “Adults play by mutual consent. You two seemed to be having a great time when I arrived, so please, keep it up.”
Tang Chen’s frown was now deep enough to crush a fly. He asked back, bewildered, “What do you mean?”
Su Chengning said, “See? This man’s brain isn’t very functional. Don’t you go resenting him for it.”
He directed this sentence at Jiang Baiyu.
Jiang Baiyu: “…”
It was awkward, but he understood Su Chengning’s meaning. Naturally, he was delighted inwardly.
Tang Chen spoke up in annoyance, “How is my brain not functional?”
Su Chengning ignored Tang Chen and continued, “The engagement between the Su and Tang families—let’s end it here.”
The Su family had always been under his control; whether the engagement continued or not was a matter of his word. He hadn’t been able to stop it in his previous life, but now that he had been reborn, Su Chengning had no desire to follow the original plot. Since he could say these words, he wasn’t afraid of the “World Consciousness” forcing him to act against his will again.
As he spoke, Su Chengning felt a clear sense of relief. This feeling of being unburdened by external forces was truly wonderful. He desperately wanted to find someone to share this joy and lightness with, but he certainly wasn’t going to show a friendly face to Tang Chen or Jiang Baiyu.
Leaving that cold sentence behind, Su Chengning turned to leave. Suddenly, a tall figure flashed into his peripheral vision, and his long legs came to a halt.
Su Chengning stopped, a trace of anticipation appearing between his brows. His exquisitely shaped lips curled slightly, and the coldness in his voice lessened.
He said, “I’m giving you a chance.”
Tang Chen had been momentarily panicked when he heard Su Chengning unilaterally breaking the engagement. However, hearing this follow-up sentence, he immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
Given how much Su Chengning likes me, he must just be overreacting out of jealousy. Otherwise, he wouldn’t react like this.
Tang Chen moved to go and comfort Su Chengning, but his sleeve was caught by Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Baiyu’s eyes were red, tears trembling on the verge of falling as he looked up at Tang Chen. His fingers gripped the fabric so hard his knuckles turned white, looking both cautious and terrified.
Tang Chen hesitated for a split second. When he looked up again, Su Chengning was already gone.
In the corridor, Tang Mo hid nervously around another corner. His racing heart brought a touch of apprehension to his handsome face. Because of Su Chengning’s words earlier, he had thought his chance had finally come.
Who would have thought that before he could even be happy, he’d hear that final sentence?
It seems he still likes my brother. Otherwise, why would he give him another chance?
Tang Mo poked his head out gloomily. His tightly pressed lips turned pale from the pressure, looking utterly miserable. He looked like a puppy abandoned by its owner weak, pitiful, and helpless.
When Su Chengning walked over, this was the sight he met: Tang Mo huddled on the ground, head in his hands, looking completely despondent.
Tang Mo had exceptionally long, straight legs. Currently, because of their owner’s dejection, they were curled up awkwardly, yet they were still impossible to ignore. Su Chengning’s gaze lingered on his legs for a few seconds; even wrapped in dark blue denim, one could see their perfect lines.
He remembered that Tang Mo liked sports. Even with his legs covered, Su Chengning could imagine the beautiful sight of those muscles in motion. Su Chengning clicked his tongue inwardly twice before moving his gaze upward.
The white T-shirt did its job of shielding the owner from certain wandering eyes. Su Chengning couldn’t see anything else and could only feel a secret regret.
An eight-pack on a young man… I don’t have one. He felt a little envious.
He stared at Tang Mo’s bowed body, stealing a glance at the hidden areas.
Tang Mo’s head was down, but the sudden appearance of a pair of feet in his field of vision startled him. He snapped his head up, catching Su Chengning half-bent over as if he were about to pat him.
“Cheng… Brother Chengning.”
Like a child caught doing something bad, Tang Mo scrambled to his feet in a panic. The white T-shirt failed its duty this time, allowing Su Chengning to catch a glimpse of a small patch of bare waist.
It was bright and white, a bit dazzling.
Unfortunately, the owner reacted quickly, pulling at the shirt to straighten it and even patting the wrinkles on his backside with embarrassment.
Under the corridor lights, the tiny dust particles floating in the air were stirred into a chaotic dance. But no one cared about their presence.
Su Chengning stood patiently to the side, watching the flustered Tang Mo with a pleasant mood.
“Tang Mo.”
Tang Mo stood up straight and gave an honest reply.
Su Chengning asked him, “Tang Mo, how old are you this year?”
Though puzzled, Tang Mo answered truthfully, “Twenty.”
“Twenty already,” Su Chengning mused. “That’s right. I’m twenty-six; we seem to have a six-year gap.”
In his last life, he was twenty-six when he died. And in that life, Tang Mo was also twenty-six when he died. Now, standing before him was a twenty-year-old Tang Mo vivid, youthful, and carrying the unique vitality of a young man. He was handsome and tall, such that even Su Chengning had to look up slightly.
For a moment, all sorts of chaotic memories flashed through his mind, but they vanished when he met Tang Mo’s clear, slightly apprehensive gaze. The corners of his mouth lifted.
He spoke in a light tone: “What are you doing here?”
Noticing the momentary stiffness in Tang Mo’s expression, Su Chengning let out a soft laugh. He slowly raised a slender, elegant finger, pointing toward the room not far away.
“Could it be… you’re keeping watch for your brother?”
“You really are a ‘good’ brother!”
