- Chapter 1 - Thank You for Loving Me
Suburban Cemetery
A tall man stood in silence before a grave. A fresh yet slightly worn tombstone bore a vibrant, handsome photograph.
The person in the photo possessed a perfect face that would captivate anyone at a single glance; the slight upward curve of the lips revealed the unmistakable joy the person felt when the picture was taken. His eyes held the youthful vigor of a man in his prime, yet tragically, he remained frozen forever in those beautiful years.
Su Chengning drifted in mid-air a short distance away. He had been following Tang Mo in this cemetery for nearly an hour, and a trace of anxiety now flickered across his elegant features.
It had been six years since his death, and this was the sixth time he had returned to his own grave. However, every time he returned, he was unable to get close; he could only look from afar at that photograph of himself, a face he no longer remembered clearly.
He knew he was good-looking. From childhood to adulthood, the people who had pursued him could probably fill this entire suburban cemetery… Bah!
“I must be muddled from being dead,” Su Chengning spat several times, glancing around at the gloom before drifting to Tang Mo’s side.
Tang Mo had a handsome face, long legs, and a prestigious family background. In any novel, he would have been the prime material for a male lead. Unfortunately, the world they inhabited was a mindless romance novel.
Indeed, the world they lived in was the setting of a Danmei novel titled The Heart’s Desire of the Wealthy Eldest Young Master. The story followed the eldest young master of the Tang family and his beloved as they weathered various emotional trials a tale of “deep and devoted” love.
And he, Su Chengning, was the half-brother of the “protagonist shou.” He was the fiancé of the “protagonist gong,” a massive stumbling block hindering the progress of the leads’ relationship.
Recalling the series of actions he had taken driven by the “World Consciousness” against his own instincts after discovering the affair between the protagonist gong and shou—Su Chengning only wanted to say one thing: “Fortunately, I died early.”
However, after his death, he had watched as a soul while the shy youth of his memory stepped by step toward a villainous end, becoming the arch-nemesis of the protagonists. It left him sighing with regret.
At the thought that the man before him would soon try to kill the protagonists to avenge him, and thinking of Tang Mo’s eventual fate, Su Chengning felt quite unwell.
“Idiot.” He swung a fierce kick at Tang Mo’s back, but his phantom limb passed straight through the man’s body without any effect.
“If you die, I won’t be sad at all,” Su Chengning drifted in front of him, meeting the man’s reddened eyes.
Those eyes looked through his phantom form, staring straight at the smiling youth on the tombstone. Various emotions swirled within those deep, obsidian pupils. What moved Su Chengning most was the love Tang Mo had silently harbored for him for many years.
It was a profound affection he only understood after he had died.
“Fine, I might be a tiny bit sad.” As if compromising, he raised his hand and pinched his fingers together to show a “tiny bit” gesture. His fingers, which should have been fair and slender, appeared somewhat translucent and illusory under the sunlight.
“I mean, who seeks revenge by personally driving a car to ram someone? If things go wrong and you don’t kill them, but kill yourself first, how embarrassing would that be?”
Su Chengning chattered incessantly in Tang Mo’s ear about how ill-advised the revenge plan was. “The two stupidest ways to die in this world are jumping off a building and car accidents.”
The one who jumped was him. The one about to be in a car accident was Tang Mo.
“The two of us really are two big idiots controlled by the World Consciousness.”
Just as Su Chengning finished his lament, he saw Tang Mo move.
Tang Mo stepped forward and knelt halfway before the tombstone. His slender, clean fingers delicately traced the features of the person in the photo. His reddened eyes were filled unreservedly with overflowing love. His voice was slightly hoarse, carrying the characteristic sexiness and allure of a mature man.
“Chengning-ge, I’ve been dreaming lately… dreaming that you’re calling me an idiot.”
He let out a low chuckle, unaware that Su Chengning was standing behind him, twisting his mouth and whispering, “You are an idiot.”
Tang Mo continued: “I am an idiot. If only I could have stopped your engagement with him sooner, would the person you liked have been me, instead of my scumbag brother?”
Su Chengning looked up at the sky: “It was the World Consciousness that made me like that scumbag; it wasn’t that I wanted to like him.”
Tang Mo went on: “Jiang Baiyu isn’t a good person either. He seduced me on one hand while clinging to my brother on the other. Actually, I wish they would just stay together.”
“Do you think I’m very wicked?”
“Not that wicked,” Su Chengning said, looking down at the ground. “A scumbag paired with a bitch it’s actually quite a good match.”
“But they caused your death. How can I watch them live happily together?” Tang Mo’s voice turned disdainful toward the end. “If I can’t have the Tang Corporation, I certainly won’t let that bastard older brother of mine have it easy.”
Su Chengning knew what that meant. The infighting between the two Tang brothers had been the talk of the town for years. Outsiders thought the brothers’ relationship had shattered because they both wanted the same person, Jiang Baiyu. In reality, Tang Mo was doing everything to oppose Tang Chen to avenge Su Chengning.
As a result, Tang Chen had to pay a massive price to fully control the Tang Corporation, and he came to view Tang Mo as a thorn in his side, wishing for nothing more than to eliminate him.
Thinking of Tang Mo’s actions over the last six years, Su Chengning felt a deep sense of guilt.
“I don’t need you to avenge me at all. You just need to live well. Even if you’re just living on my behalf, that would be enough.”
Unfortunately, no matter how loud he spoke, Tang Mo could not hear him.
Seeing Tang Mo stand up to leave the cemetery, Su Chengning hurriedly followed.
“Idiot, don’t get in the car!” Su Chengning slapped the car frantically. He spread his arms to block Tang Mo from entering and tried desperately to grab Tang Mo’s arms.
Watching himself pass through Tang Mo over and over again, helpless to do anything, a touch of sorrow entered Su Chengning’s eyes.
“This car has already been tampered with by your brother.” “He bribed your assistant long ago.” “He truly wants you dead.” “How can you be so foolish…”
As Tang Mo sat in the car and started the engine, Su Chengning sighed and sat in the passenger seat.
The car quickly left the cemetery. On the winding mountain road, all that remained in the end was a world-shaking explosion.
Amidst the flames, there was only one lingering sigh:
“You big idiot, thank you for loving me.”
When Su Chengning’s consciousness returned, he found the light overhead somewhat piercing.
It was an exquisite crystal chandelier. The light cast soft, dreamy shadows onto Su Chengning, adding a touch of fragile beauty to his frame.
Su Chengning’s beauty was recognized by everyone in the capital. He was as white as a fresh snowflake under the winter sun, his coldness carrying a hint of unapproachable nobility. When he looked at people, his peach-blossom eyes tilted upward slightly; the light flashing from the corners of his eyes was cold yet decadently seductive. Often, a single glance was like inhaling intoxicating poppy people would be willing to give up everything for him.
Even now, as his hands were clenched tight in anger, they revealed an indescribable restraint and disappointment under the light, as if he were holding back emotions on the verge of collapse.
Jiang Baiyu’s face, flushed from lust moments ago, turned deathly pale in an instant. He tightened the quilt wrapped around his body; several blue and purple marks remained on his exposed shoulders. He pulled the cover over them, as if those bruises were shouting of their existence.
He lifted his delicate face to meet the gaze of the high-and-mighty youth before him.
“Mr. Su, I didn’t mean to destroy the relationship between you and Mr. Tang.” His eyes welled with tears, his weak and helpless appearance designed to evoke a strong protective instinct. “But I truly love Mr. Tang.”
Tang Chen, who had just pulled on his clothes, turned around and was deeply moved by that sight. He stepped forward, shielding Jiang Baiyu.
“Chengning, this isn’t Baiyu’s fault. Let me explain.”
“What do you want to explain?” Su Chengning spoke coldly. “That this was just an act, or that you two turned the act into reality?”
His mind was still a bit foggy, but he remembered this scene vividly. Back then, because he had walked in on his fiancé cheating, he had run out of the hotel in a rage. In his emotional instability, he had been hit by a car, which broke both his legs.
He had always been a proud person. The emotional blow, coupled with his physical disability, had dealt him a heavy psychological setback. Depressed, he had let Jiang Baiyu worm his way into his life, only for the man to mock and ridicule him at every turn.
Jiang Baiyu was a true hypocrite a fragile little white flower in front of others, but a thorny rose in front of Su Chengning.
“Mr. Su, or perhaps I should call you ‘Brother’.” “How can the heir to such a massive group like the Su Corporation be a cripple, don’t you agree, Brother?” “The marriage alliance between the Su and Tang families can’t be broken easily, so I, as the younger brother, have to take the burden.” “Brother Chen said he never liked you. Who told you to always act so noble and pure, not even letting him touch you?” “Unlike me. Brother Chen loves it most when I cling to him in bed and call him ‘Brother’ over and over.”
Distant memories slowly surfaced, instantly igniting the resentment in Su Chengning’s heart. However, that resentment transformed into a handsome, cold face within the flash of that violent explosion.
Tang Chen moved his lips, frowning as he met Su Chengning’s cold eyes.
“I had a banquet last night, as you know. In the business world, putting on an act is unavoidable.”
Su Chengning let out a cold laugh, crossing his arms as he looked at the scumbag and the bitch before him.
“Oh? He says he has true love for you, but you say it was just an act. So, who should I believe?”
His mocking gaze traveled between the two, his eyes full of ridicule.
Jiang Baiyu’s hands were twisted together under the quilt, veins popping on the back of his hands. Tears rolled down from the corners of his eyes as he sobbed, “Mr. Su, it was my own lack of self-awareness to fall for Mr. Tang. Please don’t misunderstand; it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have fallen for Mr. Tang.”
“There’s no such thing as ‘lack of self-awareness’ when it comes to liking someone.” Su Chengning shoved Tang Chen aside and looked down at Jiang Baiyu.
Jiang Baiyu had a fine set of features; his low weeping was indeed pitiful. Su Chengning clicked his tongue twice, thinking to himself: As expected of the person designated as the protagonist shou by the World Consciousness; he indeed has some looks.
“Chengning, what are you doing?” Tang Chen spoke with some anxiety.
He didn’t necessarily love Jiang Baiyu that much, but he was very satisfied with the pleasure and fulfillment he had gained from Jiang Baiyu the previous night.
Su Chengning let go of Jiang Baiyu’s chin, which he had been gripping, and wiped his fingers with some disgust. His movements were slow, exuding the elegance and arrogance of a young master from a great family. This was a sense of nobility that Jiang Baiyu envied and could never replicate.
“I am a person who keeps my debts and rewards clear,” he said slowly. “You can like Tang Chen. I don’t mind giving this scumbag to you anyway.”
Su Chengning paused. He noticed the flash of surprise on Jiang Baiyu’s face and sneered inwardly. He remembered how, in the past, he had been easily provoked into losing control by a few words from Jiang Baiyu that had likely been the intentional work of the World Consciousness.
Although he didn’t know how he had returned to the past, he discovered that his heart was remarkably calm.
“But the two of you make me feel disgusted.”
“Therefore…”
Slap! Slap!
Two consecutive slaps rang out sharply in the room. In the empty space, they seemed to carry a slight echo a perfect demonstration of the wonderful sound a palm makes when it hits a face.
The one doing the hitting felt extremely satisfied. The two being hit were completely stunned.
Su Chengning had delivered those two slaps with absolute decisiveness. In his previous life, he could only watch as a soul while these two disgusted him; at the time, he had desperately wanted to give them a thorough beating.
After being stifled for so long, these two slaps made him feel incredibly refreshed. The only downside was that his palm hurt a little.
Su Chengning looked at his reddened palm and mused, “It seems I’ll have to find a different way to hit people next time.”
