- Chapter 20 - Run If You Cannot Win
He Yunqi shifted his gaze back to Gu He’s face. “Does it hurt?”
Gu He was breaking out in a cold sweat, yet he remained stubborn. “It does not hurt.”
He Yunqi did not argue with him.
Soon after, Gu He felt a cold sensation against his ear; it was He Yunqi disinfecting the area for him.
The punishment had been dealt, and the lesson should have been learned by now.
The little fox in his arms looked a bit dirtier than usual. His face was even paler than normal, and his lips were slightly swollen from the previous kiss, with the full, beautiful labial pearl pressing against his lower lip.
He Yunqi stared into those beautiful eyes, his gaze softening as his thoughts wandered. “Even when acting tough, you must use moderation. Run if you cannot win.”
Gu He looked up in surprise, feeling a sudden pang of an unknown emotion. Fighting was a common occurrence for him, but today was an exception; he had not expected them to find that person.
Only then did he realize that He Yunqi had rushed here in haste. His suit was somewhat wrinkled, though it did not diminish his imposing aura in the slightest.
Seeing the youngster spacing out again, He Yunqi used his cold fingers to pinch Gu He’s chin.
“Did you hear me?”
“Yes,” Gu He’s voice was faint. It was unclear if he had actually listened. He tried to shift his position, but the pain in his ribs made him wince, so he simply remained curled awkwardly in the man’s arms.
He Yunqi pulled out a wet wipe and cleaned the dirt off Gu He’s face. His movements were meticulous and gentle, so gentle it was frightening. He ran his fingers through Gu He’s hair with an unsettling tenderness.
Gu He was naturally full of resistance and wanted to avoid the man whenever possible, but in his current state, he could not escape.
Suddenly, a black car swerved out of nowhere, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes. Gu He, losing his balance, was thrown forward by the momentum. Fortunately, He Yunqi pressed Gu He’s head and body firmly into his chest.
Xie Jun could not help but curse under his mouth, though he did not forget to steal a glance at Seventh Lord’s expression. Today had been a non-stop series of heart-stopping moments. It was simply bad luck.
The car hit a bump on the road, causing the person in his arms to retch a few times. He Yunqi gently patted Gu He’s back as if he were soothing a pet.
A strange silence filled the car.
Back at the villa.
He Yunqi sat on a leather chair against the wall. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the cuffs and rolled up over his strong forearms. He looked spotless, elegant, and pleasing to the eye, yet the emotion in his eyes was enough to make one shiver.
When the family doctor arrived, he found He Yunqi looking somber. Even though the doctor was used to dealing with difficult situations, being watched by countless eyes made his hands tremble as he worked. He inevitably brushed against Gu He’s wound. Because the injury was stained with sand and dirt, it needed to be cleaned before being bandaged. Washing raw flesh is painful, and Gu He’s muscle memory caused him to instinctively flinch away.
The next second, a piercing gaze made his scalp go numb. Before the patient could even speak, He Yunqi issued a casual threat. “Doctor Jiang, when treating a patient, keep your hands steady.”
Doctor Jiang swallowed hard. His hands were usually very steady. Even when surrounded by a circle of interns and residents at the hospital, he never faltered. However, here, he felt the weight of a mountain pressing down on him, making it hard to breathe. He could only offer a dry apology. “I am sorry.”
“It does not hurt,” Gu He said, directly contradicting He Yunqi.
He was truly not that fastidious. In the past, he would not even bother with simple wounds, as they would heal on their own. If a wound was too deep, he would find a small clinic to get it bandaged and buy some anti-inflammatory pills at a pharmacy. He felt quite uncomfortable being the center of such a commotion, as if he were a young master.
“…”
Doctor Jiang wanted to cry but had no tears.
The people standing behind them were equally terrified. They thought to themselves that the guest should stop talking, because it was clear that someone was feeling protective.
Caught in the middle, Doctor Jiang watched He Yunqi’s calm but heavy gaze. He tremblingly and anxiously completed the most agonizing bandaging session of his life. The patient could not be touched or hurt; he was like the most precious and fragile crystal glass that had to be carefully protected. A task that usually took ten minutes stretched into half an hour.
He Yunqi immediately called to schedule a follow-up appointment with a professional orthopedic surgeon for the next day. Then, he began to reprimand his subordinates without reservation.
The atmospheric pressure was terrifying. After all, the incident had happened right under their noses, which was the most frightening part.
He Yunqi’s voice was not loud, but no one dared to respond. The atmosphere was silent and haunting, and a storm began to brew in the depths of his eyes.
Gu He did not dare to resist as He Yunqi’s large, rough palm brushed over his delicate neck, finally stopping at his collarbone to rub the skin until a dark red mark remained.
“Is this how you fool me?” His slightly angry tone rose as his cold gaze fell on Gu He.
Everyone listened to his reprimand with fear, lightening their breathing and not daring to make a sound.
“How did he get injured like this after only a few days?”
“If something had happened to me today, would I have to wait three days with my brains blown out before anyone came to collect my corpse?”
The frontal pressure made anyone who accidentally met his eyes look away in a panic, fearing they would be the next target of his rage. They could only hang their heads and try their best to minimize their presence.
This matter was indeed a failure of their duty. If it had just been a few bad students, it might not have been such a big deal. What angered He Yunqi was that he had allowed those scumbags to target Gu He. Had the blades of the business world become so dull that they were starting to move against his people?
Scumbags, by definition, were the types of maggots who did dirty work in the gutters. Those who could not face the light always resorted to underhanded tactics, and anyone associated with Zhao Pengtai was no good.
Zhao Pengtai had a shipment from Malaysia arriving and wanted to open the market in G City. Unable to bribe customs, he sent them in batches by air, taking a twenty percent cut. He understood the logic of not putting all his eggs in one basket, so he established secret routes through neighboring provinces to ensure a quick transfer if there was any trouble.
This Uncle Ding was a key player in one of their operations.
Uncle Ding was mainly responsible for the Asia-Pacific market and had a long reach. In Thailand, he primarily managed two small entertainment companies that focused on the ladyboy market. The police suspected him of child trafficking but had yet to find any evidence.
“I do not keep useless people here.”
Gu He sat with his legs together and his hands on his knees, remaining motionless. He was very constrained, trying to hide himself as much as possible. Although he felt that internal business affairs were none of his concern, he felt guilty that these people were being scolded because of him.
He eventually stood up and slowly approached He Yunqi. Tugging at the man’s hem, he said with a stiff face, “Seventh Lord, it is my fault.” It had nothing to do with them.
The subordinates were moved. No one had ever dared to interrupt Seventh Lord like that before. They thought that Gu He was truly a little angel.
He Yunqi stared into those guilt-filled eyes for several seconds before taking a sharp, deep breath.
“Go down and receive your punishment yourselves.”
