- Chapter 40 - Daring to Touch His Person Under His Nose
There was no movement outside. Gu Huai asked a few more times, refuseing to give up.
The sliver of light vanished in an instant, and Gu Huai’s heart plummeted to the bottom of the abyss along with it.
Was there really no one…?
Gu Huai knocked on the door a few more times in disbelief, but still, no reply came. He was almost ready to accept his fate.
Suddenly, a series of crashing and banging sounds erupted outside, accompanied by flickering flashes of light. Gu Huai strained his eyes, trying to see through the crack in the door, but the aftereffects of the assault left him with zero chance of making anything out.
He kept pounding on the door, attempting to win even a shred of attention amidst the chaos outside. If only someone would turn on a light, he wouldn’t pray for anything more.
Gu Huai pressed his ear against the door, trying to listen, but the noise was too rowdy to distinguish exactly what was happening. There was the sound of heavy objects falling, followed by the crisp shattering of glass or pottery.
He felt something—or someone—approaching. Gu Huai instinctively fumbled backward, unsure if the person outside was about to smash the door down.
With a powerful, heavy thud, the lock snapped and hit the floor. The door was kicked open in an instant.
Gu Huai’s eyes couldn’t adapt to the sudden light; combined with his previous injury, he squinted involuntarily. He could only see a blurry silhouette standing in the doorway against the brightness.
His breath hitched for a moment. He couldn’t tell if this person was his captor or his savior.
Gu Huai was halfway up the wall trying to stand when he was pulled directly into a firm embrace. The moment he caught the scent of mint, his heart settled instantly—followed immediately by his legs turning to jelly.
Held tightly, Gu Huai buried his head in Bo Jianyan’s chest, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “Brother Bo… you finally came to save me.”
The moment Bo Jianyan saw him, he was speechless. Seeing the gauze wrapped around Gu Huai’s head, his eyes instantly filled with a murderous chill.
Gu Huai was injured, and he had been locked away for so many days. He raised a hand to gently stroke Gu Huai’s back, signaling that it was over.
“I’m sorry, baby. I came too late.”
Bo Jianyan looked at the surroundings. If the door hadn’t been opened, Gu Huai would have been in total darkness and isolation. His eyes were dark, clouded with a somber haze. He remembered the files he had read—Gu Huai had a degree of claustrophobia. At that thought, the gaze he turned on the man in his arms softened with intense heartache.
Gu Huai lifted his head, trying to see Bo Jianyan clearly, but after several blinks, he could still only see a blurry figure.
Bo Jianyan kissed the corner of his mouth. Seeing Gu Huai’s slightly reddened eyes, the pain in his heart deepened. “I’m sorry. It’s my fault.”
Gu Huai managed a smile. “Brother Bo, this isn’t your fault.” He reached out, wanting to touch Bo Jianyan’s face. Because his vision was out of focus, his hand missed the mark and grasped at thin air.
Bo Jianyan realized the issue immediately, his voice tinged with panic. “Baby, you can’t see me?”
Gu Huai nodded.
Ignoring everything else, Bo Jianyan scooped him up in a horizontal carry and rushed out in a frantic hurry.
“Song Chengchi, call an ambulance! Now!”
Song Chengchi and Xie Wenye had just finished knocking down a few men outside. Catching sight of Bo Jianyan carrying someone out, they both let out a sigh of relief. But seeing Bo Jianyan’s frantic state, Song Chengchi’s hand shook for a second before he quickly dialed the number.
Xie Wenye couldn’t stay still and rushed to Gu Huai’s side. Seeing Gu Huai’s pale face and the bandages on his head, his expression turned grim. “Fuck, Gu Huai, who the hell beat you like this?”
“I’m going to make sure those bastards pay for this today.”
Though he couldn’t see, Gu Huai’s lips curled into a faint smile upon hearing that familiar voice. “Xie Wenye, you came too?”
Seeing that he could still smile, Xie Wenye let out a breath of relief, though he immediately scolded him with exasperation. “You idiot! If I came any later, I’d be picking up your corpse. Stop joking around, Gu Huai. You scared the absolute shit out of all of us.”
Gu Huai felt a twinge of guilt. “Sorry for making everyone worry.”
He couldn’t see the look on Bo Jianyan’s face, but he had a feeling that the man was currently on the verge of an explosion.
The ambulance arrived quickly, and the group headed to the hospital in a grand procession. Gu Huai went for scans and a full-body checkup. Only after confirming that there were no injuries other than the one on his head did Bo Jianyan feel a sliver of his rationality return.
The moment he had heard Gu Huai was missing, he had returned without a moment’s pause. He didn’t know who possessed such capability, but it had taken them five days to finally find where Gu Huai was being held. During the search, they had arrived at several suspected locations only to find them already abandoned.
Bo Jianyan’s remaining sanity had nearly snapped. He felt as though he had been dying for the past five days; he didn’t dare imagine what would happen if something went wrong with Gu Huai. He would never have forgiven himself.
Bo Jianyan looked terrible—gaunt and exhausted. While Gu Huai was inside being examined, Song Chengchi handed him a cup of glucose water. “Bo Dog, he’s found now. You can close your eyes and get some sleep.”
In all their years of friendship, this was the first time Song Chengchi had been genuinely frightened by Bo Jianyan’s appearance. Bo Jianyan’s eyes were bloodshot, and he looked utterly spent. For the past few days, he had been working around the clock, not daring to rest for a single second.
Bo Jianyan took the water and took a sip. “I’m fine. Have the people been identified?”
“Daring to touch my person right under my nose… they’ve got guts.”
Song Chengchi shook his head. “We can’t find anything. The bank transfers for those men all trace back to offshore accounts. Interrogating them hasn’t yielded any useful info yet.”
Bo Jianyan’s eyes turned cold. He was about to speak when the doctor emerged. He rushed forward to ask about Gu Huai’s condition.
The doctor shook his head slightly. “The wound on the back of his head isn’t fatal, but it affected the retinal nerves. His vision might not recover very quickly in the short term.”
Bo Jianyan listened intently, memorizing every word. Once the doctor finished, Song Chengchi patted his shoulder. “Go be with him. I’ll head out first.”
Bo Jianyan gave a curt nod and walked inside.
Hearing the movement, Gu Huai turned his head slightly toward the door. “Brother Bo?”
Bo Jianyan saw the fresh bandages, but the eyes looking toward him lacked their usual spark. His heart tightened again as he walked over to pull the man into his arms.
“Baby.”
Gu Huai fumbled until his hands found Bo Jianyan’s face. Bo Jianyan let him touch him. He watched as Gu Huai’s fingers traced his lips and lingered there for a long time.
Then, Gu Huai withdrew his hand, placed it against his own lips, and gave it a soft, gentle kiss.
