- Chapter 33 - Xiao Huai, You’ve Suffered
Gu Huai’s brow remained tightly furrowed. Had he known Lin Yu would be this pushy, he never would have opened his door in the first place.
Lin Yu looked up at him. “I don’t need a formal status.”
“Are you crazy?” Gu Huai asked.
An A-list celebrity was rushing to confess to him, only to say he didn’t even need a title. Gu Huai didn’t dare think about it further; the situation was far too awkward. If Lin Yu’s fans ever found out, they would tear Gu Huai apart.
Lin Yu bit his lip. “Are you rejecting me because you already have a partner? Xiao Huai, I can wait.”
Gu Huai couldn’t bear to hear another word. He quickly reached out to cover Lin Yu’s mouth and let out an involuntary sigh. “Lin Yu, stop. I’ll just pretend tonight never happened.”
Feeling the warmth of Gu Huai’s palm and staring at his moving lips, Lin Yu felt a pang of distress as he recalled the photo of Song Miao. Once he finally stopped talking, Gu Huai lowered his hand.
“Is there any way I don’t measure up to him?”
Gu Huai felt like dropping to his knees. “I’m begging you, please, stop talking.”
In the end, Gu Huai kicked Lin Yu out. After standing at the door for a long time, Lin Yu lowered his eyes, wondering if he had been too impulsive today. But he had truly been holding it in for too long.
With his mind in a whirlwind, Gu Huai started a video call with Bo Jianyan. Noticing his visibly troubled expression, Bo Jianyan didn’t even have a chance to speak before Gu Huai leaned his head back in frustration.
“Brother Bo, someone confessed to me.”
Bo Jianyan’s expression turned grim instantly. Dammit, have I even been away from Gu Huai for twenty-four hours? Bo Jianyan truly felt the urge to go back right now and hide his wife away. Every single day, someone was daydreaming about him.
“That Lin kid?”
Gu Huai nodded.
Bo Jianyan looked like he had expected it. To hell with this—I just left, and this kid confesses? What’s his game?
Gu Huai tugged at his hair frantically. “I still have so many scenes left with him. Brother Bo, save me.”
Bo Jianyan’s tone was hostile. “What did he say?”
Gu Huai repeated their conversation. The more Bo Jianyan listened, the angrier he got. “I should have just thrashed that brat.”
Bo Jianyan felt a sudden fear that Gu Huai might actually run off with someone. He thought the contract shouldn’t have been written that way; he should have added more clauses. Seeing his anxiety, Gu Huai quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry, Brother Bo, I already rejected him.”
Bo Jianyan had a bad premonition. He blamed those old geezers for the fact that he could only see his wife once a month, leaving him in a position where he had to face people confessing to his wife from afar.
Gu Huai didn’t sleep well all night because of the incident. He had no idea how to face Lin Yu now. Good God, there are still two months of filming left. Why does such an awkward thing have to happen to me?
With dark circles under his eyes, Gu Huai went to find the makeup artist. Just as he was about to enter the dressing room, he saw Lin Yu was already inside.
Lin Yu greeted him first. Gu Huai gave him a cold glance and avoided further interaction, terrified that any response would make Lin Yu think he had agreed. Seeing this, Lin Yu merely smiled.
After Gu Huai finished his makeup and changed into his costume, he sat playing with his prop sword. Lin Yu approached him again.
Gu Huai instinctively pointed the sword at him. “What are you doing?”
Lin Yu moved the sword aside and stepped closer. “I see your dark circles. Did you lose sleep because of what I said yesterday?”
Gu Huai gritted his teeth and ignored him. Afraid of continued harassment, he lowered his voice. “Don’t overthink it. I just stayed up too late chatting with my partner.”
Lin Yu wasn’t angry upon hearing this. “Then your partner isn’t very considerate, doing that when they know you have to work.”
Gu Huai caught a hint of “Green Tea” manipulation in his tone. He couldn’t be bothered to respond and walked straight past him. Lin Yu didn’t mind being ignored; he had plenty of time to wait.
Gu Huai had no time for him anyway. He was already busy, and with this miserable situation on top of it, he was even less inclined to spend time with Lin Yu. He began thinking of ways to avoid him.
As if he didn’t have enough of a headache, Ye Yunshui sent over an update on Gu Yi. Gu Huai couldn’t help but want to curse. How on earth did that old man Gu Chong manage to sit on the Board of Directors with his supposed “ability”?
Gu Yi had acquired a piece of land and was already preparing a project proposal. Gu Huai felt that he wouldn’t even need to lift a finger; at the rate Gu Yi was going, it wouldn’t take long for him to run Gu Chong’s life’s work into the ground. What a “fine” son he is.
Gu Huai closed his eyes. Running back and forth between Ye Yunshui’s company and the film set was taking its toll. There were too many things he had to handle personally.
Bo Jianyan had already bribed a few staff members to help keep an eye on Gu Huai’s daily activities. He discovered that Gu Huai was still stuck in his old ways—rushing through meals and hurrying to the next task.
Bo Jianyan didn’t know what to say to him. Every time he wanted to scold him, the sight of Gu Huai’s exhaustion made him lose his nerve. Instead, he would cut their chats short to let him rest.
Bo Jianyan knew Gu Huai was hiding things from him, but as long as it wasn’t anything excessive, he could accept it. That was until Song Chengchi sent him a document along with a long voice message:
[Bo Dog, are you really sure Gu Huai can be trusted? We found some stuff. Take a look for yourself.]
Before Bo Jianyan could reply, Song Chengchi added:
[Your brother asked us to look into it.]
Bo Jianyan looked at the files. Gu Huai was Gu Chong’s eldest son. No wonder Gu Huai had acted that way at the banquet.
As he read through Gu Huai’s life from childhood to adulthood, Bo Jianyan’s frown deepened. Gu Chong, you bastard.
Estimating that Bo Jianyan had finished the files, Song Chengchi sent a reminder:
[Gu Huai and Gu Chong are family. Could it be that Gu Huai told Gu Chong about the location for our branch office?]
Bo Jianyan instinctively countered:
[Impossible. If your father cheated, brought back a bastard son, and ignored you entirely, would you stay in contact with him?]
Song Chengchi knew that such a past was a wound for anyone. He stopped messaging; he could only warn him this much. If Gu Huai truly wasn’t a problem, he hoped his good friend would be happy.
Bo Jianyan stared at the words on the document, a sense of powerlessness washing over him. If Gu Huai had only approached him because of his poor relationship with Gu Chong, he would accept it. He didn’t care. He only hated himself, if only he had met Gu Huai sooner.
His Xiao Huai had suffered so much.
He wished Gu Huai would say something soft or vulnerable to him, but in reality, those moments were rare. Gu Huai had his own pride; once he decided on a path, he would see it through. No one could interfere.
Thinking about the time Gu Huai spent in the Gu household, Bo Jianyan felt a sharp ache in his heart. He wanted nothing more than to fly back to the capital right now, to kiss him, to hold him, and to tell him it was okay that it was all in the past, and that now, Gu Huai had him.
