- Chapter 32 - Can You Give Me a Chance?
Song Miao maintained his usual cocky tone. “Brother Lin, do you want to collaborate with me? We can make sure Gu Huai never recovers from this.”
Lin Yu stared into his eyes, seeing that his expression was dead serious. “What’s in it for you?”
Seeing Lin Yu’s reaction, Song Miao stood up and patted him on the shoulder. “Don’t be in such a rush, Brother Lin. Don’t worry, I won’t leak anything before the show airs.”
“But,” he added, “you have to cooperate with me to set a trap for Gu Huai.”
Lin Yu took a step back. “Where… where did you get those photos?”
Song Miao narrowed his eyes nonchalantly. “Why do you care so much? Or is it that you’re actually interested in Gu Huai, Brother Lin?”
Lin Yu didn’t back down. “Show me how many photos you have left. I’ll consider it after I see them.”
Without overthinking it, Song Miao pulled them out and showed him.
Lin Yu’s heart immediately settled. The photos didn’t actually reveal who the other person was; the focus was almost entirely on Gu Huai.
When did Gu Huai get a partner? How did he not know? Was Song Miao’s hostility toward Gu Huai really this deep?
Lin Yu thought for a moment. Given Song Miao’s current streak of madness, he was a bit frightening. Lin Yu feared he might actually do something to physically harm Gu Huai. He decided to agree; at the very least, knowing Song Miao’s plan was better than being in the dark.
Satisfied, Song Miao smirked. “Fine, Brother Lin. I’ll let you know the plan later.”
On the way back to the set, Lin Yu’s mind was a mess. Does Gu Huai have a partner? If so, is what I’m doing wrong?
Unsure of how to proceed, Lin Yu decided to open a burner account online to seek advice from netizens.
[The person I like seems to have a partner. Can I still keep trying to get close to them?]
Perhaps because the topic was juicy, the replies came quickly.

- “Brother, let me tell you—if the person I love becomes someone else’s wife, it just makes my story more tragic and poetic. Go for it.”
-
- “Bro, why are you asking here? Just make your move already!”
Lin Yu felt a sudden moment of clarity. He wondered if he should knock on Gu Huai’s door tonight.
Yes, action is better than hesitation. He considered himself a pretty great romantic prospect, didn’t he? Even among Alphas, he was a top-tier catch. He lowered his eyes, wondering if the person kissing Gu Huai in the photo was someone he knew.
His mind involuntarily drifted to Bo Jianyan leaning against the doorframe the other day.
No, that’s impossible. That’s Gu Huai’s cousin.
Lin Yu decided to stop overthinking and, true to form, went to knock on Gu Huai’s door that night.
Having been filming here for a month, Lin Yu had visited every single night. Gu Huai was now used to it. “Teacher Lin.”
Lin Yu noticed Gu Huai’s hair wasn’t dry yet; he had clearly just showered. If he stepped any closer, he felt he could smell the scent of Gu Huai’s body wash. He dazed out for a moment, his eyes lingering on the smooth, exposed line of Gu Huai’s neck.
Perhaps it was because he was a Beta, but Gu Huai always seemed very relaxed around him. Yet, it was precisely this casualness that made Lin Yu want to get closer, to touch him. After seeing that photo this afternoon, his first reaction had been “why?”—followed by a searing jealousy toward whoever got to kiss Gu Huai.
Gu Huai glanced at him and stepped aside. “Come in, Teacher Lin. What are we discussing today?”
Seeing that Gu Huai wasn’t on guard against him made Lin Yu feel a small spark of joy. He reached for the towel Gu Huai had set aside, intending to help him dry his hair.
As he leaned in, Gu Huai dodged him, his expression confused. “Teacher Lin, what are you doing?”
Sensing the rejection, Lin Yu felt a pang of disappointment. He handed the towel over instead. “Your hair is still wet. Dry it off so you don’t catch a cold; it’ll affect the shoot.”
“Thanks,” Gu Huai said, taking the towel.
Lin Yu found it hard to ignore the photo from earlier, and his gaze involuntarily drifted to Gu Huai’s lips. He tried to look away, but the uncertainty in his heart was eating at him.
“Xiao Huai,” he started hesitantly, “I don’t have anything specific today. I just wanted to chat.”
Gu Huai breathed a sigh of relief. Great, finally a night where I don’t have to discuss the script in the middle of the night. “Go ahead, Teacher Lin.”
Lin Yu took a breath. “Xiao Huai, is there someone you like?”
Gu Huai frowned. Why did this guy always ask about “seniors he liked” or “people he liked” the moment they stopped talking about the script? What was his deal?
Seeing Gu Huai’s silence, Lin Yu gave a self-deprecating laugh. “It’s okay if you don’t want to answer, but I still want to say it tonight.”
“You know my current status in the industry. I didn’t need to take a second-lead role in this production. Xiao Huai, do you want to know why I did?”
Connecting the dots, Gu Huai finally realized where this was going. Am I finally getting the tea on Lin Yu?
Gu Huai looked excited. “The person you like is in this crew? Who is it? Tell me! I promise I won’t tell a soul.”
Lin Yu felt that even a blind person should have realized his intentions over the last month. Yet, this person was completely oblivious. He reached out and helplessly ruffled Gu Huai’s hair.
Gu Huai, busy hunting for gossip, didn’t even mind the gesture. He watched Lin Yu with sparkling eyes, terrified Lin Yu would change his mind and stop talking.
Lin Yu sighed and finally spoke. “Xiao Huai, I took this role for you.”
Gu Huai: “??”
What did I just hear? Why would he say that? Is he crazy? Holy crap, what is going on?
Seeing his shocked expression, Lin Yu couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re so cute, Xiao Huai.”
“Are you that surprised? Didn’t you think it was strange for a random Alpha to come talk to you every night? Did you think I didn’t have an ulterior motive?”
Gu Huai’s brain felt like it was exploding. He maintained a blank face. “Lin Yu, you should stop joking like that.”
Lin Yu wasn’t annoyed. He had always known Gu Huai’s personality—otherwise, he wouldn’t have been thick-skinned enough to visit every night. But he truly hadn’t expected Gu Huai to be this clueless.
Gu Huai stood up abruptly. “Lin Yu, go back. I’m tired. If there’s anything else, we can talk tomorrow.”
Lin Yu stood up too, closing the distance between them step by step. “Xiao Huai, I don’t want to force you, but I want to know what you think.”
Seeing him approach, Gu Huai felt a surge of irritation. He really wanted to punch him right now. If only Brother Bo were here.
Gu Huai crossed his arms and looked at him. “There’s nothing to say. Lin Yu, stop messing around. I just want to focus on filming. Also, you’re not my type. If you only came here because of me, that’s a burden I can’t carry.”
Despite the firm rejection, Lin Yu kept moving closer until they were less than a fist’s width apart.
Lin Yu looked at him intently. “Xiao Huai, can you give me a chance?”
