After Breaking Up With The Wealthy Heiress - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Fang Yu had never imagined that Tan Yunshu’s interpretation of her words would be so different from what she actually meant. She thought they were communicating on the same frequency, but in Tan Yunshu’s eyes, did “not continuing” simply mean “let’s stop being difficult with each other”?
Moreover, was this whole incident just… “being difficult”?
At this moment, Fang Yu felt as if her brain were rusty, unable to process the logic. The gap between her intent and Tan Yunshu’s perception was far too wide.
Taking advantage of her momentary daze, Tan Yunshu pressed her into the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt. The sound of the door closing echoed in Fang Yu’s ears. Her thoughts returned to the present as she watched Tan Yunshu walk around the front of the car.
Seconds later, Tan Yunshu was in the driver’s seat. Seeing Fang Yu still looking stunned, she asked with a hint of confusion, “What’s wrong? Did you mean something else?”
Fang Yu turned her head to look out the window, offering no answer. The atmosphere in the car was stifling.
Tan Yunshu pursed her lips slightly. She wasn’t annoyed by the silence; she didn’t rush to drive off. Instead, she leaned over and tilted Fang Yu’s chin so they were face-to-face, then removed Fang Yu’s glasses.
Fang Yu kept her lips pressed tight, offering no physical struggle. However, she wasn’t prepared to kiss Tan Yunshu right now. Just as she was about to find an excuse to refuse, Tan Yunshu’s voice drifted into her ears.
“Why are you crying again?” Tan Yunshu’s voice was soft, her tone apologetic. “It’s my fault, Fang Yu.”
She pulled a tissue from the car’s dispenser and gently wiped the undried tears from the corners of Fang Yu’s eyes.
They were very close, their breaths mingling. In the dim light, Tan Yunshu’s earnest expression was fully visible her brow was slightly furrowed, looking truly pained for her.
Hearing “It’s my fault,” Fang Yu’s nose began to sting again. She didn’t cry more, perhaps because she had nearly run out of tears over the past few nights.
Tan Yunshu wiped her face meticulously, then smiled with satisfaction. Her gaze dropped to Fang Yu’s soft lips. She traced the corner of her mouth with her thumb and whispered, “Did you miss me?”
“…” Fang Yu mumbled, “No.”
“How is that possible? I can clearly feel that you did.”
“What about you?” Fang Yu looked at her and asked directly, “Did you miss me?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Fang Yu regretted them. She shouldn’t have asked. This wasn’t the point they should be focusing on. She also knew, deep down, she was terrified of the answer because Tan Yunshu had never said such things to her in the past three years.
But Tan Yunshu’s answer resonated quickly within the car: “I did.”
Tan Yunshu looked at her tenderly and repeated, “I missed you very much, Fang Yu.”
Fang Yu’s breathing hitched. She wasn’t used to this, yet she couldn’t stop her heart from leaping with a bit of joy.
However, the memory of that photo with the other girl instantly extinguished those emotions. She snatched her glasses back, put them on, and closed her eyes, signaling she didn’t want to talk anymore.
Tan Yunshu understood the gesture and curled her lip. “Alright, let’s get you home to rest first.”
She gripped the steering wheel, started the engine, and merged into the broad road, disappearing into the flow of traffic. Only then did Fang Yu slowly open her eyes.
As they rounded a corner, she shifted her head slightly, her peripheral vision landing on Tan Yunshu. The shifting city lights painted streaks across Tan Yunshu’s face. In the flickering shadows, her profile took on a touch of mystery, but Fang Yu could see the slight upward curve of her lips she was clearly in a good mood.
Fang Yu quietly withdrew her gaze.
Ten minutes later, the car stopped. Xinghu Courtyard No. 35 was silent and deserted in the middle of the night. The lighting here was even dimmer than at the school, and hidden by the shadows of the trees, no one would notice them even if someone walked by.
Fang Yu unbuckled her seatbelt. She didn’t want to stay in this enclosed space with Tan Yunshu any longer. She adjusted her glasses and stiffly dropped two words: “Thank you.”
“That’s not enough.”
“You were the one who insisted on driving me.”
“You still haven’t answered me. Did you really not miss me, Fang Yu?”
“No.”
Tan Yunshu looked at her tense face and let out a light laugh. “Fine. You didn’t ‘not miss me.’ By double negation, that means you did miss me.”
Fang Yu: “…” Fang Yu: “I’m getting out.”
“Okay.” Tan Yunshu didn’t say anything more and didn’t attempt to follow her. “Goodnight.”
“Mm.” Fang Yu paused, then added: “Goodnight.”
“I’ll come pick you up tomorrow night too,” Tan Yunshu added.
Fang Yu didn’t respond. A few seconds later, she got out and entered the complex. Tan Yunshu watched her figure disappear through the entrance, the smile on her lips slowly fading. Her fingertips tapped rhythmically on the steering wheel as a faint coldness settled on her face.
Doesn’t want to continue this relationship?
Fang Yu felt a sense of relief only after she got home. Being in a familiar house gave her a sense of security. She couldn’t help but think about the Tan Yunshu she had seen tonight. She thought Tan Yunshu might follow her up, but she hadn’t.
That was for the best; she still needed to do some mental construction. She wasn’t capable of playing the cold-faced role perfectly.
After showering, it was nearing 11:00 PM. Since Fang Qin had taken her break last Wednesday, her holiday was moved to Wednesday again this week; she wouldn’t be back until tomorrow night.
Tonight, Fang Yu was alone again.
After a day of work, exhaustion nearly overwhelmed her, but every time she closed her eyes, she thought of Tan Yunshu. After several failed attempts to sleep, she sat up against the headboard and scrolled through her Moments. It was an attempt to distract her brain, but it wasn’t very effective. For instance, when she saw a part-time supervisor post photos of the beach saying they “missed” the ocean, her eyes automatically locked onto the word “missed.”
Naturally, her thoughts drifted back to what Tan Yunshu said tonight. – I missed you very much, Fang Yu.
Fang Yu let out a breath and secretly curled her lips, though the thought of that photo quickly suppressed the feeling. She pursed her lips, thought for a moment, and opened Tan Yunshu’s Moments.
The post was gone. It was as if it never existed.
Was it because Tan Yunshu realized she was in the wrong that she deleted it? But Fang Yu couldn’t just forget it.
A long time passed before Fang Yu finally fell into a deep sleep. Since she hadn’t cried herself to sleep this time, her eyes weren’t swollen when she woke up. A few days ago, colleagues at the firm had asked why her eyes looked puffy, and she had made up excuses. Going in today, she wouldn’t have to deal with those questions.
But…
Looking at herself in the mirror, Fang Yu belatedly remembered that her part-time job at the milk tea shop had technically ended last night because Li Lan was returning today.
In the afternoon, she received the payment from the milk tea shop owner nearly four hundred yuan, which covered a month’s rent for her and her mother.
The bearded owner: Hard work, Xiao Fang.] Fang Yu looked at the message, struggled for a moment, and typed back: [Can I come in tonight, Brother Shan?
At 7:00 PM, Li Lan saw Fang Yu at the shop and smiled. “I thought you weren’t coming tonight, Fang Yu.”
“No, I’m here.” Fang Yu put on her apron and asked with concern, “How is everything at home?”
Li Lan had taken leave because her grandfather was sick; the old man had fallen and was quite ill. She and Fang Yu were on good terms, and since Fang Yu was a good listener, Li Lan had shared quite a bit over the past few days.
“It’s just like that,” Li Lan waved her hand. “But my uncles are all pushing for my mom to pay up. Their behavior is so ugly. When the family property was split, my mom got nothing because she was ‘married out,’ but now they suddenly remember her.”
“Did your mother agree?”
“Hah! She did!” Li Lan walked into the prep room, the creaking fan providing background noise. “She said she only has this one father.”
Just then, a customer arrived at the counter, so the two stopped chatting and got to work. The shop stopped serving at 10:00 PM, and Tan Yunshu was already waiting for her at the “old spot.”
The night was thick. Fang Yu said goodbye to Li Lan and watched her enter the dorms before walking slowly toward the car. She kept a neutral expression and looked straight ahead once she got in.
Seeing her like this, Tan Yunshu kept a smile on her face and said playfully, “Fang Yu, how can you be like this? You said we’d stop being difficult, so if this isn’t you being difficult, what is it?”
Fang Yu glanced at her, her tone cold: “It wasn’t my fault.”
Tan Yunshu was stunned for a second, then her tone softened again. “It was indeed my fault. I shouldn’t have posted that photo.” She explained patiently, appearing to genuinely care about Fang Yu’s feelings. “I took that photo on purpose. She was drunk and didn’t know. As for that post, it was set to be visible only to you…”
“Very childish, right? I think so too. I won’t upset you like that again.” She even made a promise.
Fang Yu picked at her fingernails. She kept her eyes down and didn’t respond immediately. After a few seconds, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why?”
Why do something like that just to make her angry and sad?
“Because I saw that colleague leaning on your shoulder that day, and it made me uncomfortable.” Tan Yunshu remained frank and sincere.
Fang Yu looked at her. “Which one?”
“The one called Mengmeng?” Tan Yunshu’s tone rose. “I don’t know which ‘Meng’ it is.”
“She helped me, that’s why I—” Fang Yu stopped herself. She had replied too quickly; she shouldn’t be like this.
Tan Yunshu leaned in closer. “That’s why you let her lean on your shoulder? Why you let her hook her arm around you?” She took Fang Yu’s hand and pressed it against her own heart. “But seeing her so close to you made my heart ache, Fang Yu.”
Fang Yu’s fingers twitched. She didn’t let herself get lost in Tan Yunshu’s act of pity. She said, “Those are normal gestures.” Then, thinking of the photo, she added gloomily, “But yours… was not.”
“Oh?”
Fang Yu looked away, unwilling to say more.
Tan Yunshu chuckled and laced her fingers with the hand she was holding, then leaned in even closer. “Fine. From now on, I’ll only do things like that with you. Can you forgive me now?”
“I…”
She wanted to say she needed more time to think about it, but before she could finish, Tan Yunshu used her other hand to remove her glasses, captured her lower lip, and slowly began to deepen the kiss.
Fang Yu didn’t refuse. Her palms slowly rested against Tan Yunshu’s shoulders. When the kiss ended, Tan Yunshu looked up, her eyes lingering with desire.
“So well-behaved. I don’t want to let you go home again.”
“Can we go back to that hotel from last time?”
