After Breaking Up With The Wealthy Heiress - Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Of the eight people present, everyone was tipsy except for Tan Yunshu and another girl who was allergic to alcohol.
Under such circumstances, whether sober or not, everyone’s reaction time was a beat slow upon hearing Tan Yunshu’s words.
What “You aren’t worthy”? Who said that? It sounded like Tan Yunshu? But how could Tan Yunshu possibly say…
Yet the reality was that the direction of that pleasant female voice was indeed from Tan Yunshu’s side.
With this realization, everyone turned their gazes toward her, appearing dazed and bewildered. At this moment, Tan Yunshu was sitting at the very edge of the booth. She was propping up her right cheek, looking at them with that usual lazy and gentle expression.
Several people began to doubt themselves. Was it a hallucination? Because Tan Yunshu was not the kind of person to say something like that.
A well-bred young lady, approachable and generous moreover, they were classmates and friends who had met many times. Who had ever heard Tan Yunshu say something so “offensive”?
“It’s not a hallucination. I said it,” Tan Yunshu said with a smile, as if knowing what they were thinking, pulling them back from their chaotic state.
Xu Diao, as the person involved, was stunned for a moment, but then he couldn’t take it anymore. He just wanted to make his face familiar to Fang Yu and indulge in a little daydream. Why wasn’t he worthy?
Immediately, Xu Diao’s temper flared like a loaded gun. His face flushed red, and his words became reckless as his volume rose: “I’m not worthy? Tan Yunshu, make it clear to me. What do you mean I’m not worthy?” In his anger, his rationality was sparse. “You don’t think I still like you, do you? Miss Tan, my pursuit of you is ancient history from millions of years ago.”
“Fine, fine, I know I’m not a match for you. You have a massive family business; I can’t compare. But am I not even a match for a girl working part-time in a milk tea shop? What kind of logic is that? Fuck!”
These words stunned everyone at the table. Even people at surrounding tables looked over, their gossiping eyes burning as hot as volcanic lava.
With graduation approaching, a drama like this was bound to interest anyone. Furthermore, since the central figure was Tan Yunshu, even the group two tables over—who had been wailing over their lost youth—stopped crying, wiping their tears while staring intently at this scene.
Tan Yunshu maintained her original posture.
The lights of the late-night snack stall were a bit murky, but she still looked like she existed in a different dimension. Her fingertip tapped lightly on her cheek, a smile still fixed on her face. Compared to Xu Diao’s volatile emotions, she appeared much more peaceful.
Two seconds later, she asked, “Are you finished?”
Xu Diao pulled out his chair and sat back down. He didn’t speak, and he no longer had the heart to go find Fang Yu.
Tan Yunshu said softly, “You’ve misunderstood, Xu Diao.”
The girl who had organized the gathering immediately tried to smooth things over: “It must be a misunderstanding. Shushu definitely didn’t mean it that way…”
Others chimed in: “Xu Diao, you’re always so out of line. How can you say things like that…”
Xu Diao frowned impatiently: “It’s the truth!”
Tan Yunshu sat up straight and curled her lips slightly. “Everyone is here tonight talking about life and ideals. It inevitably reminded me of when you did your self-introduction in freshman year. Do you remember what you said? You said you wanted to be the best host in the country. But looking at you just now…” Her smile vanished, replaced by a serious expression. “Are you worthy of that goal?”
Tan Yunshu was rarely like this. She spoke with such earnestness that it left no room for doubt. “However, my wording was poor just now, and I asked too abruptly. I apologize to you.”
“Do you accept, Xu Diao?”
“…” Xu Diao calmed down and nodded. He didn’t want to offend her.
Soon, the onlookers’ gazes withdrew. The atmosphere at the table was somewhat salvaged, though an underlying awkwardness remained. Xu Diao’s words had dragged up the past.
The Broadcasting and Hosting major at Liucheng University wasn’t a flagship program; it wasn’t even popular. Very few people studied it. Tan Yunshu’s class had only seventeen people. Over four years, except for Tan Yunshu, the dating lines in that small class were like a tangled web.
Tan Yunshu, with her looks and background, was naturally the first prize everyone wanted to win. Yet whether it was them or students from other colleges, all had been rejected by her. Xu Diao was one of them. In fact, of the three men present tonight, all had pursued her at some point, and all had met the same fate.
Fortunately, the “misunderstanding” was resolved, and they could continue chatting with smiles. Tan Yunshu toasted everyone with water: “To a bright future, friends.”
The host of the party said at the right time, “Shall we take a group photo? Who knows if we’ll ever have a moment like this again. We’re all about to go our separate ways.”
“Sure!” everyone agreed.
Tan Yunshu didn’t stand in the center. She stood on the edge with a smile. However, through the image on the raised phone, she saw Fang Yu in the distance locking the door of the milk tea shop, her back moving further and further away.
Fang Yu also thought she was hallucinating.
She was in the prep room making the final two cups of milk tea for the night when she heard the two new customers chatting about Tan Yunshu. This hadn’t happened in several nights. There was only one Tan Yunshu at Liucheng University.
“What the hell! That guy actually dared to be mean to Senior Yunshu! Who does he think he is? Being mean to a beauty like that!” “What’s his problem?” …
Fang Yu’s eyelashes lowered. She was rarely distracted. Had Tan Yunshu been treated poorly? Why? Because someone was angry after being rejected? That seemed like a more likely possibility; it had happened before. At the same time, she felt disappointed in herself she found it difficult not to pay attention to any topic related to Tan Yunshu.
Soon, she finished the drinks and declined any new customers, beginning to tidy the workstation. With Li Lan away, she was a bit overwhelmed. As summer approached, the demand for iced milk tea and fruit tea was increasing. She had been incredibly busy today, and the fan on the wall was doing nothing to help.
At 10:10 PM, Fang Yu locked the door. She didn’t know where Tan Yunshu was or if she had left, but none of that mattered anymore. She threw out the trash and walked through the food street, passing the plaza where Tan Yunshu had been publicly confessed to half a month ago.
Ahead were the female dorms, then the garden, the central lake, the library… then she could leave the campus.
The warm yellow streetlights shortened her shadow. She stepped on her own shadow, nearing the bottom of Dorm Building 1, when her phone screen lit up. It was probably Cheng Meng, she thought.
After eating Malatang together, the two had been in touch more often, though it was limited to superficial greetings. Cheng Meng knew her off-work time and had been messaging her around this hour for the past few days. Once she got home and said “I’m home,” Cheng Meng would tell her to rest well, saying it wasn’t safe for a girl to be out so late alone.
But… the person messaging this time wasn’t Cheng Meng. It was Tan Yunshu, whom she hadn’t seen or heard from in nearly a week.
Fang Yu froze, her ankles feeling as if they were locked in heavy chains.
xxx: Wait for me there.
She didn’t even ask where she was; she just told her to wait at the old spot. Arrogant as always. But this meant Tan Yunshu knew she was at school tonight.
Realizing this, Fang Yu didn’t reply. Her lips curled into a self-deprecating smile before she forced herself to keep walking. After just a few steps, a black sedan pulled up alongside her.
Fang Yu didn’t turn her head. She gripped her phone until her knuckles turned white. The road ahead was brightened by the car’s headlights, revealing several couples embracing in the shadows. Even in the shadows, they were more legitimate than the two of them.
The black sedan followed slowly. Fortunately, there were few cars at night, and the road by the dorms was wide, so this behavior didn’t cause a scene.
After a while, Fang Yu passed the dorm building. This time, the car couldn’t follow. Person and car parted ways. Without looking back, she jogged into the garden. During the walk, she received a message from Cheng Meng asking if she was on her way home.
Fang Yu: Mm. Fang Yu: I’m almost home.
She lied because she didn’t have the energy for small talk.
Cheng Meng: OK!
Ten minutes later, covered in a light sweat, Fang Yu reached the edge of campus. She used the side gate because the nearest subway station was there. Simultaneously, the black sedan was parked at the only spot near the entrance. Tan Yunshu, just like last time, was standing by the car, looking straight at her.
Cars sped by on the main road, their lights dazzling. Very few people were entering or exiting the station at this hour. Tan Yunshu’s position was set back, making it hard for passersby to notice her.
Fang Yu saw her instantly. She wanted to ignore her like everyone else, but all her senses rushed toward Tan Yunshu. From a distance, she felt as if she could smell Tan Yunshu’s fragrance a scent that seemed stubbornly lodged in her nasal passages.
She remembered the feeling of hugging Tan Yunshu warm and comfortable.
But before she could reach the subway entrance, Tan Yunshu stepped away from the car, her long legs carrying her over. In seconds, she stood in front of Fang Yu.
“Why didn’t you reply to my message?”
Tan Yunshu reached out to take Fang Yu’s hand, but Fang Yu pulled away.
Fang Yu looked at her, her eyes reddening as she asked, “Did you reply to me, Tan Yunshu?”
Even if silence was an answer, she still wanted a verbal one. Moreover, it was easier when they weren’t face-to-face; now that they were, the grievances she had tried so hard to hide began to crumble.
“I’m replying to you right now.”
Seeing her state, Tan Yunshu reached out again. This time, she didn’t give Fang Yu a chance to dodge. She gripped her hand firmly and led her to the car. She opened the passenger door. In an instant, crystal-clear tears welled up in Fang Yu’s deer-like eyes and fell as soon as she looked over.
As if feeling embarrassed, Fang Yu turned her head away, showing only her profile, but she had no intention of getting into the car.
Tan Yunshu’s fingers curled slightly, her tone unconsciously softening: “Let me take you home first, Fang Yu.”
She leaned closer to Fang Yu’s face, her posture lowering slightly: “But didn’t you say you’d stop being difficult?”
Upon hearing this, Fang Yu’s eyelashes fluttered as she froze.
