- Chapter 17 - "He Seems Better Suited for Me"
“Who is Xing Xiyan?”
The youth’s lips and cheeks were a vivid, blooming crimson. His features were exquisite, and his light brown eyes held a faint glimmer of confusion as he gazed up at Gao Chang without blinking.
Unlike Xing Xiyan, whose every bone and fiber exuded an unapproachable, icy elegance, the youth before him possessed a more delicate, youthful, and pampered look like a snow-elf wandering through the mortal world.
Judging by his tone, he didn’t seem to know Xing Xiyan.
“A friend of mine.” Gao Chang suppressed the doubt in his heart. Noticing the youth’s toes were slightly curled and hovering off the ground, his gaze softened with a hint of apology. “Sorry, I accidentally bumped into you just now. Are you okay?”
“It’s not your fault; I didn’t check the path before coming over.” Xing Yizhao shook his head, then hesitantly pointed at the crutch on the ground. “But, I have an impolite request. Could you… pick up that crutch for me? Without it, getting back to my ward will be quite difficult.”
Gao Chang picked up the crutch and handed it back. As he turned to leave, however, his pinky finger was hooked.
“Little brother, my name is Xing Yizhao. May I be so bold as to ask for your name?”
The youth’s fingertip twitched slightly. His eyes were shimmering, hiding a boundless sense of anticipation. A sweet, fragrant peach scent spread silently and rapidly from where their fingers touched, surrounding Gao Chang in layers. It was soft and airy, and while it made him feel as though he were enveloped in a cloud of mist, it also stirred an untimely sense of restlessness within him.
Yet, compared to the subtle abnormality within his body, what shocked him even more was the youth’s name.
Similar looks. The same surname. Could it really be a coincidence?
Gao Chang whipped his head back. His gaze moved from the youth’s features to the slender, scallion-white hand hooking his pinky, then moved to the wrist and pulled himself away.
“Are you… unwilling to say? It’s okay if you don’t want to.” Xing Yizhao lowered his head, looking dejectedly at his empty fingertips as the starlight in his eyes faded. He didn’t understand. He only wanted to know his name. Why wouldn’t the man tell him?
He had waited so long to find a high-quality Alpha that satisfied him. A top-tier prey…
Seeing the Omega’s low spirits, Gao Chang couldn’t bear to crush him. “It’s just a name, nothing I can’t say. I’m called—”
“He is called Gao Chang.”
Before the Alpha could finish, another cold, melodic male voice abruptly cut in, completing the sentence for him. Synchronized with that voice were two slender, lean arms that swept from behind Gao Chang and locked firmly across his chest.
Gao Chang frowned, looking at the head resting on his left shoulder. “Uh, why did you come out…?”
He remembered clearly telling Xing Xiyan to wait for him in the ward. He didn’t understand where Xing Xiyan a yet-to-be-differentiated person got such strength; the hands around his waist were cinched incredibly tight, nearly squeezing his internal organs together. The area being held throbbed with a dull pain.
“I wasn’t at ease with Senior being out here alone.”
Xing Xiyan’s gaze swept toward the Omega in front of them. His eyes were covered in frost, as if he were looking at a predatory interloper. He hadn’t seen the Alpha return to the ward, so he had followed him out toward the restroom.
Sure enough, the Alpha whose nature was difficult to change had been easily deceived by another Omega. This one being his own half-brother.
“Then could you… loosen your grip a bit?” Gao Chang paused, patting the hands at his waist. He tried to quietly persuade the other to let up, only to be met with a silent tightening of the hold. He took a deep breath and gave up.
“Brother…”
Suddenly meeting Xing Xiyan’s cold, sinister gaze, Xing Yizhao’s face went pale. The hand gripping his crutch shook involuntarily.
Hearing the familiar way Xing Yizhao addressed Xing Xiyan, Gao Chang looked between their similar features and suddenly realized the truth. So, Xing Yizhao had lied to him. He and Xing Xiyan clearly knew each other. Not only that, they were highly likely to be biological brothers.
Xing Xiyan was unmoved by the title. His eyes flashed with unmasked disgust. “Don’t get any ideas about him.”
“??” Gao Chang was baffled. For a moment, he couldn’t tell if Xing Xiyan was warning him or warning the youth across from them.
Realizing the man before him had a deep connection with his “useless brother,” the youth bit his lip. His light-colored phoenix eyes, so similar to Xing Xiyan’s, suddenly brimmed with a thin layer of mist. “Brother, I’m sorry. I feel that… he seems better suited for me.”
This was the first time he had felt such a powerful resonance with another Alpha. This man called Gao Chang must have an incredibly high mental compatibility with him perhaps far exceeding that of any other Alpha.
Hearing his brother’s defiant provocation, Xing Xiyan’s tone grew even colder. “That person can only be mine.”
“Brother, you haven’t differentiated yet, so you might not know Alphas cannot refuse Omegas.” Xing Yizhao tightened his grip on his crutch. His gaze swept over the Alpha, whose face was flushed with an abnormal pink, and spoke with hidden meaning. “Especially an Alpha in their heat period. Without the pheromones of an Omega to soothe them, they will only become more frenzied. Brother… can you satisfy him?”
“None of your business.”
Xing Xiyan’s arms suddenly cinched around Gao Chang’s waist. He practically dragged the Alpha away, pulling him out of Xing Yizhao’s sight.
“Brother… I will have him.” Watching their retreating backs, the youth’s rose-red lips curled slightly. He whispered to himself, his eyes full of absolute determination. Even if his current attraction to that Alpha was merely a result of pheromones, he would still snatch him away.
He wanted him. He wanted that “useless brother” of his to watch with his own eyes as his lover crawled at his feet.
“Xing Xiyan, is he really your brother?”
Gao Chang looked back at the fair youth talking to himself, his voice full of curiosity. Perhaps because that youth’s appearance was truly similar to Xing Xiyan’s, the first time he saw the Omega aside from being amazed by his exceptionally pleasant pheromones he had even felt a strange sense of déjà vu.
“Half-brother.”
Noticing the way the Alpha’s gaze lingered on Xing Yizhao, Xing Xiyan’s face darkened. He abruptly pulled the Alpha into the elevator and slammed the ‘close’ button.
Gao Chang braced himself against the handrail with one hand to steady his footing. “So that’s how it is. No wonder you look so much alike.”
However, judging by their behavior, the two brothers were not close. There seemed to be a deep rift between them. Thinking about how Xing Xiyan had been separated from his other father since childhood, living under someone else’s roof and never being brought back to the main family to acknowledge his roots… it was normal for him to have no feelings for a half-brother.
As if thinking of something, Xing Xiyan pinned the Alpha into the corner. His hand gripped Gao Chang’s wrist with hidden force. “He is an Omega. Does Senior like him?”
A SS-rank Omega who looked similar to him and knew exactly how to manipulate hearts how many Alphas could truly find the heart to refuse such a person?!
Seeing the area where he was being gripped turn visibly red, Gao Chang realized things were heading south. He hurriedly stated his position: “What nonsense are you talking about? I am very devoted, okay!”
Despite the Alpha’s various attempts to prove himself, he still couldn’t quite neutralize the paranoia budding in Xing Xiyan’s heart.
The youth pressed against the Alpha’s nape. Under the confused and lost gaze of those blue eyes, he leaned in and captured the full, lush, red-rose lips, refusing to let go until the crimson flesh was swollen and tinged with purple.
“Do not get too close to him.”
Or I will go mad.
