Chapter 44: Tug-of-War – Ambiguity Arises, Pain Increases
“What’s wrong?” Xu Yinyu looked at Yu Shujin, who had stopped in place again, utterly confused.
As she spoke, Yu Shujin’s gaze finally moved away from Xu Yinyu’s waist.
“I have an early schedule tomorrow morning, so I’ll be leaving very early. I just wanted to say goodbye.”
“Oh,” Xu Yinyu felt delighted inside. “President Yu is busy with a myriad of affairs.”
Yu Shujin’s expression darkened, looking gloomy.
Xu Yinyu reminded her, “President Yu, please close the door on your way out.”
Yu Shujin silently closed the door, and then Xu Yinyu heard a “click,” and the light inside the room went out.
Xu Yinyu burrowed under the covers, rubbed the fingers and wrist that Yu Shujin had touched, tightly closed her eyes, and hoped to fall asleep.
Moonlight flowed slowly in the dark night. The windows of the master and guest bedrooms weren’t fully shut, and the night breeze, carrying the scent of soil and green plants from the garden, sneaked in.
Xu Yinyu tossed and turned, then abruptly opened her eyes.
Despite her body being exhausted to the limit, her consciousness was exceptionally clear.
She had actually kept the person she once only wanted to escape from in her own residence.
A sense of absurdity rose in her heart, accompanied by a faint disappointment.
It was like the cool breeze of early autumn.
Carrying a slight chill, it imperceptibly lowered the temperature little by little. By the time a person noticed, it was already the main event of the cold winter.
She covered her heart, this place that had been subjected to extreme humiliation and injury, was now beating tensely.
Xu Yinyu closed her eyes. Yu Shujin’s demanding, overbearing, and undeniable face, along with a few highly insulting remarks, could all be perfectly fixed in her mind.
The trauma accumulated through successive bouts of panic and anxiety.
The empty hospital room, the bed covered with a white sheet, and the endlessly rainy cemetery.
Xu Yinyu tossed and turned, gripping the sheet so tightly that it lost its original shape. Cold sweat beaded on her once smooth forehead, sliding down her cheeks and dampening the pillow.
The next morning.
When Xu Yinyu emerged from the master bedroom, she found Yu Shujin brushing her teeth. Her mind went blank for a moment.
The doorbell rang just then. Xu Yinyu immediately reacted, ignoring Yu Shujin’s gaze, and ran outside. “Coming! Coming!”
Yu Shujin put on yesterday’s clothes and walked out, her expression subtly changed.
Both assumed it was Yu Shujin’s driver who had arrived.
Therefore, when Xu Yinyu opened the door and found Victoria, her eyes widened, and her face drastically changed.
She spoke without thinking. “Why is it you?”
Before Victoria could finish her sentence, she saw a plain, beautiful woman walk out of Xu Yinyu’s villa. For a moment, she was stunned silent by the beauty.
Xu Yinyu looked back, as if sensing something, and indeed saw Yu Shujin walking out. Her body shivered, but she maintained her composure, pretending to be an unfamiliar stranger. “Good morning, President Yu.”
Yu Shujin nodded and naturally placed her hand on Xu Yinyu’s waist.
Xu Yinyu’s body silently stiffened. Feeling Yu Shujin’s warm, hot hand on her side, intentionally or unintentionally rubbing her, she couldn’t tell if it was deliberate, so she had to pretend not to notice.
“This is Victoria. You met her at the gathering yesterday,” Xu Yinyu introduced again.
Victoria’s eyes were shocked. For a moment, she couldn’t figure out the relationship between her friend and her wife.
Didn’t she have amnesia? Weren’t they separated?
She saw an exquisite, slender hand extend toward her. “Hello, Yu Shujin, CEO of Wanyu Group. Pleasure to meet you.”
Wow, this time she even stated her family background.
Victoria quickly adjusted her expression and look. She lightly shook Yu Shujin’s hand. “Hello, President Yu. My name is Victoria, and I’m Xu’s colleague.”
They quickly released hands.
“Xu and I plan to grab breakfast up ahead. Would you like to join us, President Yu?” Victoria’s face was lovely, but her eyes were deep and profound. When looking directly at someone, she exuded a cold quality.
Yu Shujin looked at Xu Yinyu, forcing a smile that contained regret or slight dissatisfaction. “I don’t have time. Next time.”
A valuable Ferrari sped toward them from a distance. Yu Shujin said goodbye to Xu Yinyu. “Miss Xu, see you next time.”
Before Xu Yinyu could react, a warm pair of lips lightly touched her forehead, a fleeting kiss like a dragonfly skimming the water. The warmth instantly disappeared, leaving only Yu Shujin’s retreating figure and Victoria’s shocked eyes.
“Something’s not right! You two are not right!” Victoria pointed a trembling finger at Xu Yinyu. “What kind of person with amnesia dares to kiss someone on the mouth?”
Xu Yinyu touched her own forehead, unable to speak.
Victoria grabbed her canvas bag and dragged her forward, gossiping as they walked. “Hurry up and tell me the whole truth.”
The threads of thought in Xu Yinyu’s mind were like a tightly knotted ball of yarn. “I’m not very clear myself right now.”
“Fine, I’ll treat you to breakfast so you can sort out your thoughts.” Victoria felt a dull pain in her heart beside her.
As Xu Yinyu ate breakfast, she spoke disjointedly, “I left her because I felt that if we stayed together any longer, both of us would go crazy, so I ran away.”
At that time, Xu Yinyu was completely fractured. The hope for life was extinguished in her heart little by little, like glass that had been smashed with a hole, trembling precariously.
But Yu Shujin acted as if she couldn’t feel the sting of the broken glass, holding her tightly, refusing to let go even though she was covered in wounds from Xu Yinyu’s sharp edges.
Victoria frowned, her eyelids twitching twice.
“When I ran, she found out and chased me frantically on the highway in her car. She ended up in a car accident. Her family took the opportunity to interfere with her memory, making her forget about me.”
Victoria’s jaw dropped in shock, forming an ‘O’ shape.
“I was afraid her family would cause trouble again, so with my sister’s help, I came here and started a new life.” After Xu Yinyu finished speaking, she took a sip of warm water.
Victoria finished listening. “So your meeting this time was an accident?”
Xu Yinyu nodded.
“I thought that was the last time.”
“But you met again,” Victoria’s voice was soft. “Even with amnesia, she wasn’t willing to let you go the moment she saw you.”
Xu Yinyu’s heart fluttered slightly. She lowered her head, suddenly feeling that she and Yu Shujin truly had a doomed relationship.
“Xu, do you want to truly get rid of her?” Victoria asked, her voice slightly heavier than before.
Xu Yinyu seemed to have never considered this question. She was accustomed to drifting with the current. When encountering many situations and people, she would often make choices that wouldn’t harm others.
Compared to people who make active and decisive choices, she was the kind of person who was swept along by the choices of others.
“I,” Xu Yinyu hesitated. “I don’t know.”
Victoria seemed surprised that Xu Yinyu would give her such an indecisive answer.
“Then let me rephrase the question: Do you want to be locked in a villa again, living a pampered life without worry, or do you prefer the current freedom, even if you are working hard, but can choose where you live, what you eat, and where you travel?”
“Which life do you feel you want to live?”
Victoria’s voice was like the sound of tranquility from a Buddhist temple, gently dispersing all of Xu Yinyu’s worries and anxieties.
The few emotional wobbles vanished the moment the words were spoken.
Xu Yinyu’s eyes became cold and firm. She said, “Victoria, thank you. I know now.”
From late summer to the winter solstice, she remembered her silent suffering at night.
The state of mind tormented by the unknown, the insecurity, and Yu Shujin’s unpredictable moods.
She absolutely, absolutely did not want to experience it a second time.
A shadow of darkness flashed in Victoria’s blue eyes, but it was quickly concealed.
“Xu, I am always willing to help you.”
Xu Yinyu was slightly moved. “Mhm.”
But she didn’t take Victoria’s words too seriously, assuming she was just trying to sincerely help her resolve her issues.
The two took a taxi to the company.
Xu Yinyu, newly promoted, was busy dealing with the mess Alice had left, often spending the entire day in the team leader’s office.
Victoria would bring the doctor along at lunchtime to deliver food to Xu Yinyu and sit in the office for a while.
“Xu, the sofa in this office is so soft. It’s great,” Victoria half-lay on the sofa.
Xu Yinyu smiled, quickly ate a couple of bites of food, closed the lunch box, and continued to immerse herself in work.
Victoria and the doctor chatted and laughed nearby. When the lunch break ended, they consciously said goodbye to Xu Yinyu and left.
After two full weeks of continuous overtime, Xu Yinyu finally finalized the schedule for the second-quarter project proposal.
While taking a taxi back to the villa entrance, Xu Yinyu was still discussing work with Victoria. When Xu Yinyu posed a question, she waited a long time for Victoria’s reply.
A bad feeling rose in her heart. Following Victoria’s gaze, she saw Yu Shujin leaning against Xu Yinyu’s door in a long black coat, hands in her pockets, looking down.
With just a plain look, Xu Yinyu noticed that Yu Shujin’s face was too thin, possessing a fragile beauty typical of those with prominent bone structure.
Yu Shujin seemed to sense their gaze. She slowly looked up, and a slight ripple stirred in her calm eyes. “Miss Xu, long time no see.”
Victoria’s brows furrowed.
“Why are you here?” Xu Yinyu asked stiffly.
“I came to return clothes,” Yu Shujin acted as if she didn’t notice Xu Yinyu’s cold demeanor. She took out an exquisite gift box from her pocket. If an outsider saw it, they might think the box contained luxury goods.
Xu Yinyu’s cheeks immediately flushed. Embarrassed to speak directly in front of Victoria, she quickly said goodbye to her. “Victoria, I’m going home first. See you tomorrow.”
Victoria wanted to say something more, but she caught an extremely cold and gloomy look from Yu Shujin far away, which made her freeze in place.
By the time she reacted, Xu Yinyu had already pushed Yu Shujin through the door.
“Yu Shujin!” Xu Yinyu swore angrily. “Are you sick?”
Yu Shujin appeared clueless. She held the exquisite gift box with an innocent expression. “Miss Xu, I came to return a new set of underwear to you. How does that make me sick?”
Xu Yinyu: …
