Chapter 13: Recognizing the Reality – Torment and Salvation
Xu Yinyu was repeatedly torn apart and nearly fainted that night.
The dim moonlight filtered through the French windows, casting a pale streak on the floor.
Xu Yinyu’s body was already numb, leaving only her soul to be tossed and shattered by Yu Shujin’s every act of cruelty, eventually being trampled into the mud along with the moonlight of the night sky.
Throughout, Yu Shujin’s beautiful, attractive lips and teeth continuously uttered harsh words, precisely stinging Xu Yinyu’s most vulnerable nerves.
These words, mixed with a tone of almost obsessive possessiveness, echoed in the room, making it feel as if all the suffering and calamity she endured was caused by the person right in front of her.
“Look at that bland appearance of yours. One look is enough to spoil the appetite. How did I ever fancy you?”
“Our relationship ended? Then are you just my bed chattel?”
Every word fell like a blade.
Xu Yinyu bit down hard on her lower lip. The strong, metallic taste of blood spread through her mouth, but she seemed oblivious.
Even at the very end, she refused to bow her head to Yu Shujin, stubborn as a rock. She accepted all of Yu Shujin’s torment without resistance, suppressing all the humiliation and pain in her chest.
It wasn’t until noon the next day that the fierce sunlight pierced the curtains, illuminating the master bedroom, which was still filled with lingering, unspeakable intimacy from the night before.
Xu Yinyu slowly woke up from a deep, heavy sleep. Her eyes were swollen and sore, like small steamed buns placed over her eyelids.
Her entire skeletal structure felt disassembled and reassembled; every muscle in her body screamed with aches. She tried to move, attempting to prop herself up, but her legs were too weak to support her. She stumbled, nearly falling directly off the bed.
Just then, a familiar, terrifying set of footsteps sounded outside the bedroom door.
The steps were light and rhythmic, one by one, instantly causing Xu Yinyu to freeze. Almost instinctively, she trembled and rapidly shrank back under the blanket.
Yu Shujin pushed the door open from outside. She stared at Xu Yinyu’s face, pretending to be asleep, and looked at her bitten lip, inevitably recalling the intensity of last night.
She had indeed gone too far last night.
The efforts she had made over the past period, the deliberate gentleness she had painstakingly faked, and the fragile warmth and trust she had cultivated with Xu Yinyu were all shattered in one night, thanks to the indulgence of alcohol yesterday.
Yu Shujin felt immense regret, yet beneath that regret lurked a deeper, more secret feeling of satisfied indulgence.
It had been a long time since she had such a profound interaction with Xu Yinyu. The internal desire and the burning of the alcohol made her feel the resurgence of intense emotion deep in her heart.
The long-lost feeling of complete possession and control rekindled from the depths of her being.
Like Xu Yinyu, she was unwilling to face the reality soberly, yet she indulged her own subconscious downfall.
Yu Shujin’s gaze was scorching, almost tangible. Xu Yinyu’s eyelids twitched.
Yu Shujin carried a glass of warm water. Her long fingers brushed across Xu Yinyu’s lips. Feeling the woman’s uncontrollable shiver, she tried her best to speak softly. “Ah-Yu, wake up, drink some warm water first to warm your stomach.”
Xu Yinyu’s long lashes fluttered, and she finally opened her eyes.
Her originally clear, bright almond eyes now looked like glass beads drained of all spirit, covered by a layer of gloomy dust.
There was no emotion in them, no anger, no grievance, not even a trace of resentment. She was empty, like an inflatable doll meant only to hold another person’s desire.
Yu Shujin was arrested by those eyes. She immediately lowered her head, avoiding the gaze, and handed the water cup to Xu Yinyu, who struggled to sit up.
Xu Yinyu looked indifferent, but her actions seemed compliant.
After a night of brutal behavior, the tiny bit of hope she had held onto for Yu Shujin had been utterly smashed to pieces.
Relationships have an expiry date, Shen Lu was right.
Her relationship with Yu Shujin had ended in the ruins eight years ago.
Now, all her connection with Yu Shujin was predicated on Yu Shujin’s ‘wanting.’
If Yu Shujin wanted her, she couldn’t leave. If Yu Shujin wanted to take, she couldn’t refuse, nor could she keep anything for herself. She couldn’t fight back, nor could she willingly submit with peace of mind. She could only constantly remind herself that this was a marriage agreement with a time limit.
Like an expired relationship.
Yu Shujin was no longer her girlfriend or her obsessive ex-lover; she was more like Xu Yinyu’s boss.
A boss who held absolute power and whose moods were unpredictable.
She would assign mandatory tasks, and when in a good mood, she might also bestow a satisfactory gift.
After recognizing this, Xu Yinyu obediently took the water cup. After drinking, she met Yu Shujin’s gaze directly.
“Is there anything uncomfortable about your body?” Yu Shujin felt the silence between them and spoke first, trying to break the deadlock.
Yu Shujin no longer smelled of alcohol.
Xu Yinyu twitched her nose and shook her head. Her throat was extremely sore at the moment. She tried to speak, but her voice was low and hoarse, barely forming a sound. She tried for a long time but couldn’t utter a fluent sentence.
“I… I’m fine…”
Yu Shujin’s heart clenched. She used her fingertip to touch Xu Yinyu’s lips. “Don’t speak if you’re uncomfortable. Do you want more water?”
Xu Yinyu shook her head. Her face was pale and haggard, and her almond eyes looked especially vacant, clearly showing how badly she had been bullied.
“Didn’t you want a job a while ago? I’ve already cleared things for you at Star Entertainment. Once your body recovers in a few days, you can start right away.” Yu Shujin stood up again, opened the closet, and forced a smile, showing Xu Yinyu the various luxury items inside.
A dazzling array of designer bags, jewelry glittering with cold light, and various high-end clothes and accessories.
“These are all things I prepared for you, they are all yours.”
Xu Yinyu was shocked by the luxury items in the closet. At a glance, the cheapest item would cost at least five figures. This entire closet was worth at least seven figures, a sum she could never earn in her lifetime.
She shook her head at Yu Shujin. “No… need…”
She didn’t have high material desires; these sparkling things held very little appeal for her.
Yu Shujin’s delighted expression froze on her face. The celebrity who was always looked up to outside was repeatedly lowering her head to curry favor with Xu Yinyu.
And still being rejected.
An uncontrollable burst of anger surged through her heart.
Yu Shujin clenched her fist, her fingertips digging deeply into her palm. She forced the anger down, closed the closet, and the displeasure in her voice leaked out. “Then what do you like?”
Xu Yinyu flinched at the sound of the closet door slamming shut, her shoulders instinctively shrinking.
Yu Shujin looked at Xu Yinyu’s frightened yet forced composure. Her heart softened. She squatted down, looking at Xu Yinyu with deep eyes. “Ah-Yu, accept them, okay?”
Her tone was so earnest it sounded less like asking Xu Yinyu to accept her gifts and more like asking her to accept her feelings.
Xu Yinyu slowly nodded.
Yu Shujin immediately hugged Xu Yinyu, resting her chin on Xu Yinyu’s shoulder. “So, do you forgive me?”
Xu Yinyu was stunned. Was she trying to apologize with what she just did?
Her phone suddenly rang. Yu Shujin glanced at it, her face sinking. She quickly looked at Xu Yinyu, leaving a hurried, “Get some rest,” before rushing out.
The moment Yu Shujin left, Xu Yinyu’s propped-up body instantly went limp. Cold sweat had already soaked the back of her pajamas.
She didn’t know why she had ended up in this situation.
Xu Yinyu buried her head under the blanket. By the time Yu Shujin finished her unpleasant phone call with the Yu family matriarch and returned to the master bedroom, Xu Yinyu had already fallen asleep.
Yu Shujin sat on the edge of the bed. Her restless heart felt strangely calm when she saw the other person.
She was slowly softening internally. Maybe one day she would forgive Xu Yinyu, and they would love each other again like before.
That wouldn’t be bad either.
On Xu Yinyu’s first day of work at Star Entertainment, Yu Shujin wanted to go and show support, but Xu Yinyu flatly refused her.
She told Yu Shujin, “Too many people like you. If they see that my relationship with you is complicated, they’ll constantly find reasons to bother me, and I don’t like that.”
Uncharacteristically, Yu Shujin didn’t get angry about the refusal. Instead, she happily arranged for Chi Xia to accompany her to her new job.
Chi Xia took Xu Yinyu directly to her desk in the artist office area. The chief assistant enthusiastically introduced her to her colleagues.
The colleagues were very warm and suggested a dinner gathering that night to celebrate the new hire.
Out of obligation on her first day, Xu Yinyu didn’t refuse and smiled and nodded.
She had thought Yu Shujin had simply found her a pointless, easy job, but to her surprise, apart from a slightly slow start, the work was anything but relaxing.
She had to dive into a completely new comic project immediately upon joining, collaborating with her new team to create a new work.
Unconsciously, dusk spread across the sky.
Xu Yinyu’s shoulder was patted. She looked up and saw a new colleague from her team named Qi Wei. Qi Wei’s paneling was exceptionally precise, and Xu Yinyu had been immediately impressed by her technique.
“Yinyu, let’s go. We’re heading to the hotpot place downstairs for dinner.” Qi Wei had small, pretty hoop piercings on her ears, nose, and lips, and her hair was dyed lavender purple, giving her a very distinctive look.
Xu Yinyu immediately thought she was cool.
“Okay, let me shut down my computer.” Xu Yinyu quickly saved her work, then shut down. She stood up, pocketed her phone, and walked out alongside Qi Wei.
Just as they reached downstairs, Xu Yinyu noticed a familiar SUV parked below their building. Her gaze paused for a second, but her mind was blank, and she couldn’t place it.
“What’s wrong?” Qi Wei saw Xu Yinyu stop and curiously followed her gaze.
“Huh?” Xu Yinyu looked up, snapping out of her speculation. “Nothing. Let’s hurry over.”
No sooner had Xu Yinyu spoken than she saw a familiar figure walking toward her.
