Chapter 12: Tearing Apart – Our Relationship Ended Long Ago
“Why don’t I deserve it?” Shen Lu tilted her head, displeased. “Am I not your best friend? Or do you think you can still get her love after abandoning Shujin?”
“Xu Yinyu, every relationship has an expiry date. Just like your tolerance for me, the moment I chose Shujin, you already started hating me.”
Xu Yinyu’s eyes were icy. “Don’t sugarcoat your betrayal.”
“Weren’t you the same?” Shen Lu abruptly moved closer to Xu Yinyu and lowered her voice. “Didn’t you betray her?”
Xu Yinyu was momentarily stunned by Shen Lu’s accusation.
Yu Shujin had already walked up behind Xu Yinyu.
Shen Lu’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Shujin?”
Xu Yinyu instinctively looked back when she heard “Shujin,” bumping right into Yu Shujin, who instantly pulled her into an embrace.
When Xu Yinyu looked up and met her gaze, a trace of guilt rose in her heart. She struggled but couldn’t break free, so she conceded, “I want to leave.”
Yu Shujin’s attention never once fell on Shen Lu.
Shen Lu’s fingernails dug into her palms. She softened her voice again and called out, “Sister Shujin?”
Yu Shujin lowered her head and replied to Xu Yinyu, “Alright.”
Completely ignored, Shen Lu watched her beloved Yu Shujin walk away from her, step by step, holding Xu Yinyu’s hand.
“Stop acting crazy.” Chen Zhuxing walked up to Shen Lu and wiped her tears. “No matter how much you carry on, Yu Shujin won’t choose you.”
Shen Lu wrapped her arms around Chen Zhuxing, her voice broken and incoherent. “Sister Zhuxing, why?”
Why didn’t Yu Shujin choose Shen Lu? Why did Yu Shujin ignore and neglect her two attempts to approach her?
Chen Zhuxing felt even more downcast watching Shen Lu’s miserable tears.
Chen Zhuxing informed Xu Qingyu, then led the depressed Shen Lu away from the wrap party.
Because Shen Lu was never in Yu Shujin’s choices.
Neither seventeen years ago, nor now.
Eight years ago, Lexi City High School No. 1.
“Xu Yinyu, you got first place!” Shen Lu’s clear voice buzzed around Xu Yinyu. Many other students were gathered around the results board, checking their own scores or those of people they cared about.
She excitedly hugged Xu Yinyu. “Treat me to a meal, Yinyu! You’ll definitely represent our school in the Olympiad this time.”
Xu Yinyu smiled gently and shook her head. “I’m sorry, Lulu. I still have to go to my tutoring job after school. How about this weekend?”
Shen Lu pouted in displeasure. “It’s always like this! You study-obsessed bad guy who values grades over friends.”
Xu Yinyu felt even guiltier when she said this. She had very few friends normally, and Shen Lu was the first one who didn’t mind her quietness and proactively cared about her. Naturally, she didn’t want to let her down.
Xu Yinyu relented. “Okay, let’s go get beef noodles across from the school?”
“Wow! Yinyu is the best!” Shen Lu threw herself into Xu Yinyu’s arms. “I want beef noodles without the noodles, haha.”
Xu Yinyu was successfully amused and rubbed the top of her head.
After school, Xu Yinyu quickly packed her bag and rushed out of the school gate to line up at the beef noodle shop.
She had rushed out as quickly as possible, but it still took half an hour to get a table. She ordered two bowls of beef noodles, specifically asking for cilantro but no scallions, and sat quietly waiting.
After a while, Xu Yinyu saw Shen Lu running from the school gate, clutching her school bag, looking flustered.
Xu Yinyu poured her a cup of warm water. “Why so flustered? What happened?”
Shen Lu gratefully accepted the cup, took a sip, and then spoke. “I just saw the school bully taking several boys to harass the transfer student in our class.”
The transfer student in our class? Xu Yinyu couldn’t form a clear face in her mind.
“Did you forget? She sits right behind you,” Shen Lu said exasperatedly.
“Why?” Xu Yinyu wondered.
Shen Lu lowered her voice. “It seems to be because the transfer student rejected his confession.”
“Do you know where they are? I think we should go help her,” Xu Yinyu said firmly.
“Do you want to get beaten?” Shen Lu shook her head fearfully. “That’s the school bully. If he targets you, you’ll be badly hurt.”
“We can call the police for her,” Xu Yinyu suggested.
“You…” Shen Lu regretted telling Xu Yinyu this. She knew that whenever Xu Yinyu heard about such ‘injustices,’ she would definitely step up to help.
As soon as Yu Shujin arrived at this unfamiliar school, she ran into a few idiots confessing to her. After flatly rejecting them, she was stalked. She simply led them on a chase around the school entrance.
Finally, after walking three loops, four or five local thugs appeared on the narrow alleyway at the end of the street.
Yu Shujin stood there with a cold, beautiful face, hands in her pockets, watching them. She tilted her head slightly. “Why did you stop following me?”
“You old hag, you bitch!” The school bully was the first to break down, swearing furiously. “Today, you’ll find out the power of High School No. 1’s bully, and I’ll teach you a lesson on how to behave!”
“A bunch of garbage, why all the talk?” Yu Shujin wore the blue and white school uniform. The loose shirt and trousers fluttered slightly in the evening breeze, showing a sense of youthful abandon.
The bully was completely enraged. “Get her! Beat her down! I’ll make her pay the price for rejecting me!”
Yu Shujin brushed aside her loose hair and abruptly sprinted away in the opposite direction.
The henchmen froze for a moment, then, eyes wide, grabbed their wooden sticks and chased after her.
Yu Shujin ran towards the school, trying to reach a crowded area while she still had the energy.
She failed to notice someone greeting her.
Xu Yinyu was knocked down by the sprinting Yu Shujin, and then saw the four or five school bullies and their henchmen following closely behind.
Both she and Yu Shujin awkwardly struggled to their feet from the ground. Their knees were scraped through the fabric of their school uniforms, and they couldn’t help but wince as they stood up.
Before Xu Yinyu could fully steady herself, she was pulled by Yu Shujin to keep running forward, the pain feeling like a sharp stab.
Yu Shujin only let go of the strange girl’s hand when she saw more people around. She noticed the girl looking at her with tearful eyes, and her throat felt momentarily tight.
Suddenly, she heard a voice from afar call out, “Xu Yinyu!”
Yu Shujin came back to reality. “Hello, my name is Yu Shujin. I’m sorry for startling you just now.”
“It’s alright,” Xu Yinyu said gently. “I’m Xu Yinyu. I’m just glad you’re okay.”
Shen Lu rushed over to check on Xu Yinyu, seeing a tear in Xu Yinyu’s school uniform trousers. “How did your knee start bleeding?”
Yu Shujin only then noticed the dirt on Xu Yinyu’s uniform. She looked like she had rolled on the ground. “Student Xu, I’m the one who made you fall. Why don’t I take you to the pharmacy to get it treated?”
Xu Yinyu waved her hand. “It’s fine. We have to go eat beef noodles. Do you want to join us?”
Shen Lu covered her face. “I’ll pack the beef noodles for you. Go get yourself treated first, you ancestor.”
Yu Shujin let out a laugh. Her beautiful, cold eyes instantly became vivid and lively, like a priceless painting falling into the mortal world, suddenly shining brightly like cold snow meeting spring water.
Xu Yinyu was stunned. “You look really beautiful when you smile.”
Shen Lu wholeheartedly agreed.
Yu Shujin reeked of alcohol. She wrinkled her nose and took off her jacket.
She had shielded Xu Yinyu from a whole table of toasts. Although the drinks were fine wines that wouldn’t upset her stomach, the taste was strong, and she couldn’t stop feeling dizzy even now in the car.
She instinctively leaned against Xu Yinyu.
Xu Yinyu seemed to notice her discomfort and placed Yu Shujin’s dizzy head on her lap, skillfully massaging it to relieve her headache.
Finally, when they got out of the car, Xu Yinyu helped Yu Shujin back to the villa.
The dark house suddenly lit up with a “bang.” Xu Yinyu flicked the light switch, and the massive crystal chandelier illuminated the entire villa.
Yu Shujin, hit by the sudden brightness, opened her eyes uncomfortably. “We’re here?”
Xu Yinyu nodded. Her hand, still supporting Yu Shujin, hadn’t been withdrawn. She said warmly, “You go upstairs to the master bedroom to wash up and rest. I’ll make you hangover soup.”
“So well-behaved,” Yu Shujin chuckled, repeating Xu Yinyu’s obedience, and even went a step further, hooking her arm around Xu Yinyu’s pale neck and leaning down for a kiss.
Xu Yinyu forcefully struggled, pushing the unguarded Yu Shujin to the floor.
Yu Shujin’s displeasure was amplified by the alcohol. Being thrown off so carelessly by Xu Yinyu completely ruined her pleasant mood. The good atmosphere was instantly broken. She stood up and moved closer to Xu Yinyu, her voice filled with heavy anger. “Are you disgusted with me?”
Xu Yinyu shook her head. “Go wash up first, Shujin.”
The smell of alcohol triggered a resistance that was purely instinctive, especially after seeing her former best friend.
But seeing Yu Shujin, who had been pushed away, stare at her with deep, dark eyes, she instinctively took a step back.
Xu Yinyu’s backward step was magnified in slow motion in Yu Shujin’s eyes. As if deeply stung, Yu Shujin lunged forward and grabbed the most vulnerable spot: her neck.
“Why are you backing away! Are you disgusted with me? Or are you afraid of me?” Yu Shujin slammed Xu Yinyu against the wall, her long, pale fingers clamped around her throat. Seeing Xu Yinyu’s fair face turn red and swollen, she slightly lessened her grip.
“Or is it that, in your heart, that relationship with me ended long ago? From the moment you betrayed me. Isn’t that right!”
She had indeed heard everything clearly. All of Xu Yinyu’s fears had come true.
All their feelings, in Xu Yinyu’s eyes, ended the moment she made her choice—perhaps even earlier, the moment they met, the moment Yu Shujin took her hand and ran forward.
The buttons for both the start and the end were already set.
“Slap!”
It was a harsh slap. Yu Shujin’s eyes were red, her lips trembling. The hand that struck the blow was also shaking. Even though alcohol was in control, she still felt immense shame.
Seventeen-year-old love and betrayal, placed gently in her hand by this person, and then fiercely tossed away.
Once, twice.
Would this person forever hold a knife, ready to stab her heart the moment she began to reveal her true feelings, bringing her profound pain?
Xu Yinyu covered her burning left cheek. The words she wanted to explain were like tears on a broken string, tumbling down.
“What exactly do you want from me!” she cried out to Yu Shujin, her voice choking.
Yu Shujin clearly saw the rapid redness and swelling on the side of her cheek. She bit her lip. “I want you to know your place. Stand by my side. Your eyes must always look at me. Your mouth must only speak the words I like to hear. Your body must always be open to me. Even this heart, I want it to beat only for me.”
After she finished speaking, she fiercely bit Xu Yinyu’s lips with her cold mouth, their grinding contact devoid of affection, only mutual pain.
