- After Being Entangled By the Obsessive Heroine [Quick Wear]
- Chapter 7 - "She will always be your sister."
Xian Ning avoided both of their gazes, wishing she could turn into a butterfly and fly away. But her worst fears came true. Xue Yingxian asked directly, “Are you going to cook for him?”
“Oh, about that!” Xian Ning wracked her brain and came up with a brilliant idea. “How about we all go together?”
The words only made things worse. Xue Yingxian’s face grew even darker, as if she were about to eat her alive.
Tang Di, however, remained calm, standing there like a perfect gentleman, waiting for Xian Ning to make her decision.
But Xian Ning knew she had no choice. No matter what she did, she was going to offend one of them. So she decided to go for the most shocking option possible.
I’m not here to break you up. I’m here to join you.
Xue Yingxian’s face was a stone mask. Tang Di glanced at her, his eyes changing slightly. “Miss Xue, would you like to come along?”
Xue Yingxian gave him a sidelong glance, then turned to Xian Ning. “I have a class this afternoon. You’re coming with me.”
Without waiting for Xian Ning to answer, she grabbed her by the waist and half-dragged, half-carried her away.
The onlookers hadn’t expected this. They were curious to see Tang Di’s reaction. He turned, watching their retreating backs, his deep eyes dark and placid, showing no sign of displeasure.
“Do you really need someone to go with you to class?” Xian Ning asked.
Now that they were a good distance away, Xue Yingxian slowed down.
“I went with you this morning, didn’t I?”
Xian Ning: “Huh?” I never asked you to.
Xue Yingxian read the thought on her face and smiled, her previously icy expression softening in an instant.
“You can go out and have fun if you want. It’s just an elective this afternoon.”
In that case, why didn’t she just agree to my idea? Xian Ning thought. By now, the male and female leads should have already been in contact. Maybe their parents were even discussing their marriage. But judging from what just happened, they weren’t even close, and they clearly disliked each other.
Xian Ning shook her head, tossing out her baseless guesses.
They were both strong-willed, so maybe they were just a feuding couple who were destined to be together, like a love-hate relationship. The more they hated each other, the more they would fall in love.
That must be it!
She was so lost in thought that she didn’t see the lamppost in front of her. Just as she was about to crash into it, Xue Yingxian pulled her back.
“What are you thinking about?”
Xian Ning snapped back to reality and quickly said, “Thank you.”
Xue Yingxian’s hand was wrapped around Xian Ning’s waist from behind. When Xian Ning turned to talk, their faces were incredibly close.
Xue Yingxian’s heart inexplicably sped up, and her breathing grew shallow. As Xian Ning’s eyelids fluttered, her thick, dark eyelashes brushed against Xue Yingxian’s skin, a sensation both tingly and itchy.
Xian Ning wasn’t thinking about it in that way, but the atmosphere was becoming undeniably intimate. Xue Yingxian’s gaze was filled with a fervor that pulled her deeper and deeper in.
“So… where is your class this afternoon?”
As she spoke, she subtly moved away, standing at a polite distance.
Xian Ning thought she had handled it well, but Xue Yingxian still seemed a little displeased, her eyes growing two degrees colder.
“Building Two, Room 304.”
“Oh. Well… see you this afternoon, then?”
Xian Ning didn’t want to say anything else to upset her, so she kept her words vague.
“Or are you going to go find Tang Di?”
“Huh?”
Xue Yingxian’s face wasn’t quite grim, but she was watching Xian Ning intently, waiting for her answer.
Xian Ning said helplessly, “I just want to go back to sleep. For a nap.”
Xue Yingxian’s expression didn’t change much, but her eyes brightened. “I’ll come back with you, then.”
“Don’t you live off-campus?”
Xue Yingxian had applied to live off-campus in her first year, and the school hadn’t even assigned her a dorm room.
Xue Yingxian didn’t explain. She simply put her hands in her pockets, seeming to be in a great mood. “Let’s go. If we waste any more time, your nap will be over.”
As she watched the woman make herself comfortable on her bed, Xian Ning realized exactly what she was up to.
Xue Yingxian hugged one of the stuffed animals at the head of the bed. “I didn’t know you liked these.”
Xian Ning gave an awkward laugh and sat down at the desk nearby, pulling up a show on her tablet.
“Aren’t you going to nap?”
Xian Ning gave her a perfectly timed smile. “I’m not that sleepy anymore.”
Xue Yingxian put the stuffed animal down and said in a low voice, “Is it because of me? Go rest. I’ll go wait outside.”
Her voice grew softer and softer, and she drooped her head. Xian Ning looked at her downturned eyes and felt like she was looking at an abandoned puppy.
Weak, pathetic, and helpless.
I must be losing my mind. She was a tall woman. Where was the “weak and pathetic” part?
“The bed isn’t that small. Two people should be able to—”
Xian Ning hadn’t even finished her sentence when Xue Yingxian’s eyes lit up. She took off her shoes and got under the covers in one fluid motion, then patted the empty space beside her, motioning for Xian Ning to join her.
Xian Ning forced herself to lie down, as stiff as a mummy. She didn’t even dare to breathe too loudly.
Xue Yingxian, on the other hand, was completely relaxed. She took a thin blanket and draped it over Xian Ning’s stomach, then laid on her side, resting her head on her shoulder.
With one pillow between them, they were bound to be close. But this was too close. Xian Ning could feel Xue Yingxian’s breath on her neck, spreading a subtle heat over her skin.
No matter how hard Xian Ning tried to control it, the side of her face pressed against Xue Yingxian turned hot.
Xue Yingxian’s breathing was even, and Xian Ning thought she had fallen asleep. Just as she was about to let out a sigh of relief, she heard her voice.
“Lu Xian Ning, your ears are red.”
Xian Ning fluffed up like a startled cat and kicked off the blanket. “It’s a little hot, huh? I should probably turn on the AC.”
Xue Yingxian didn’t say anything, but a faint chuckle reached Xian Ning’s ears, making her face feel even hotter.
“You won’t be hot once you fall asleep.”
She said this while gently putting a hand on Xian Ning’s waist and pulling the kicked-off blanket back up.
“Cover your belly button, or you’ll get a stomachache.”
Xian Ning didn’t dare to speak or ask questions. She lay there, stiff as a board, for a long time before she finally got sleepy.
She woke up at four in the afternoon. She was groggy. Didn’t Xue Yingxian want me to go to class with her? Why didn’t she wake me up?
She washed her face to fully wake herself up. She had a few missed calls from her sister. When she called back, Lu Han’s gentle voice came through the receiver.
“You didn’t have class this afternoon. Why didn’t you answer your sister’s calls?”
“Oh, sorry. I was asleep.”
Lu Han chuckled, her voice doting. “You slept for so long. My lazy piggy never changes.”
“Hey! I told you not to call me that!” Xian Ning said playfully.
“Okay, okay, I won’t.” Lu Han agreed as a temporary measure. “I just finished work for the day, and my annual leave starts this afternoon. Mom wants me to pick you up and take you home for dinner.”
Xian Ning was about to agree instinctively, but then she remembered Xue Yingxian and changed her mind.
“Can you come a little later?”
“Something’s wrong?” Lu Han asked.
Xian Ning didn’t feel the need to explain. “Yeah. I have something to talk to a classmate about. Her class ends at five-thirty.”
“Okay, I’ll come get you at five-thirty.” Lu Han agreed without a second thought, as she was always unconditionally indulgent with Xian Ning.
Waiting around in the dorm room was boring, so Xian Ning snuck into Xue Yingxian’s classroom and sat behind her. She had planned on teasing her, but as soon as she sat down, Xue Yingxian seemed to sense her presence and turned around.
“You saw me?”
“I smelled you.”
After saying that, Xue Yingxian grabbed her notebook and bag and moved to the seat next to her.
Xian Ning raised her arms to smell them, and pulled at her shirt to take a sniff, but she didn’t smell anything strange.
Xue Yingxian watched her act like a curious little kitten, a faint smile spreading across her lips.
“You fool.”
Xian Ning knew she was talking about her and glared at her in protest. Xue Yingxian didn’t look at her, but after a moment, her throat subtly moved.
It was a food appreciation class. Xian Ning learned nothing but got hungry. When the bell rang, she stretched and walked out with Xue Yingxian, following the flow of students.
“Let’s have dinner together later. I booked a table at Yinjian Pavilion.”
Yinjian Pavilion was a famous high-end Chinese restaurant, a place for the rich and powerful. You usually had to book a table two or three months in advance, unless you were a wealthy family like the Xues.
Xian Ning was very tempted, but she had a prior engagement. She had promised her sister she would go home for dinner and couldn’t break her word.
“Sorry, I was just about to tell you. I have to go home for dinner tonight.”
For a second, Xue Yingxian looked disappointed. But then she thought it was fine. They had all the time in the world, and there would be plenty of other opportunities to eat together.
“That’s alright. I should have been more considerate. I’ll tell you ahead of time next time.”
Xian Ning nodded, a little hesitant to meet her gaze.
Why is she suddenly being so nice to me? Is it because we slept together, and she feels like she has to take responsibility for me?
She didn’t dare to ask or think too much about it, or the plot would surely go off the rails.
Without realizing it, they had reached the school gate. Xian Ning immediately saw her sister. Lu Han was tall and had a great figure. She was sophisticated and gentle, and her Chanel suit made her stand out. You couldn’t take your eyes off her.
Xue Yingxian saw her, too.
The day had seemed so bright and the sky so clear. But when she saw the smile on Xian Ning’s face as she looked at her sister, the sky no longer seemed so blue, the wind no longer so gentle, and even the sunset felt hot and sticky.
Has she ever smiled at me like that? No.
Xue Yingxian walked over to Lu Han. “President Lu, you seem to have a lot of free time. I guess three times the liquidated damages was too little.”
Lu Han’s smile was soft. “You’re joking, President Xue. If you think it’s too little, please take it up with the company. I’m on my annual leave. This matter is no longer my responsibility.”
Xue Yingxian was speechless, looking at Lu Han with a sour expression. Lu Han was a few years older and held her own perfectly.
Xian Ning didn’t know what they were bickering about. They weren’t saying anything overly aggressive, yet the atmosphere was incredibly tense. She felt suffocated in between them.
Xian Ning moved to Lu Han’s side and said to Xue Yingxian, “I’m going now. See you tomorrow.”
Lu Han gave Xue Yingxian a long, deep look and turned to walk away, holding Xian Ning’s hand.
Xue Yingxian quickly called out to her. Xian Ning turned, asking with her eyes what was wrong.
“My parents are at a banquet, so I don’t have anyone to eat with. So…”
Xian Ning immediately understood. “So you want to come to my place for dinner?”
Xue Yingxian nodded.
Xian Ning glanced at Lu Han, who smiled, indicating that it was fine.
“But you won’t be used to my family’s food, will you?”
The Xue family ate delicacies every day. Xian Ning’s family only made simple home-cooked meals, and at most, they would add a steamed fish for her.
“Of course I’ll be used to it. I once lived on the streets and had to go through trash cans,” Xue Yingxian lied calmly.
A mental image of a small, tattered Xue Yingxian flashed in Xian Ning’s mind, and her heart softened.
“Then come to my place for dinner. I’ll call my mom and tell her to make a little extra. You like eggplant with minced meat, right?”
“Yeah.” The clouds parted on Xue Yingxian’s face. She strode over, her long legs squeezing between Xian Ning and Lu Han, forcing Lu Han to let go of her hand.
Xian Ning’s parents were very grateful to the Xue family. When they heard Xue Yingxian was coming for dinner, they almost emptied the grocery store.
The original owner had hidden her true self so well from her parents. Though they had heard the two didn’t get along, they didn’t know the extent of it. They weren’t surprised that they had suddenly become friends.
The five of them made eight or nine dishes. The dinner table was almost too small to hold everything. Everyone was full and stopped eating, but Xian Ning kept stuffing her face. It wasn’t that she was greedy, she just couldn’t stand wasting food.
The consequence was indigestion. Her stomach felt heavy, and standing was uncomfortable, but sitting was even worse.
Xue Yingxian received a warm welcome from Xian Ning’s parents. She ate some fruit with them and chatted, showing no signs of leaving.
It grew dark outside, and Xian Ning finally had to remind her that it was getting late.
Xue Yingxian looked at her and lowered her gaze. “My parents aren’t home. I’m all alone.”
Xian Ning: Really? I don’t believe you.
That huge mansion must have at least twenty or thirty servants. What are you even pretending for?
Xian Ning’s parents heard this and felt sorry for her. Despite her wealth, she seemed lonely without her parents around.
“It’s late, and the roads are dangerous at night. Why don’t you just stay here tonight?”
Xian Ning: She has a driver!
“Mom, we don’t have any extra rooms!”
Her mother looked at her. “Your bed is big enough. You can let Xiaoxian sleep with you. Or you can sleep with your sister and let Xiaoxian have your room.”
Xian Ning: Excuse me?
Xue Yingxian immediately said, “I’ll sleep with Xian Ning. I have some questions about our homework that I want to ask her.”
Lu Han, who was about to say something, fell silent.
There was nothing to be done. She had to obey her mother. Xian Ning prepared a new towel and got a new set of her own pajamas for Xue Yingxian. She told her to go shower while she waited in the living room and watched TV.
Lu Han came out in her pajamas and sat down next to her. “You should sleep with me. Xue Yingxian is a princess; it wouldn’t be right to make her uncomfortable.”
Xian Ning thought that was a good point. Just as she was about to agree, the bathroom door opened. Xue Yingxian came out in a pair of her cartoon pajamas, a towel wrapped around her hair. Her face was flushed from the steam, looking as fresh as a peach.
The original owner liked a more sexy and mature style. These cartoon pajamas were a gift from her mother and had been hanging in the closet, untouched. But they fit Xue Yingxian perfectly.
The more Xian Ning looked, the more pleased she was. She decided she would give the pajamas to Xue Yingxian.
“Xian Ning?”
Lu Han’s voice brought her back to reality. “Oh, right! I’ll sleep with you then, and let Xue Yingxian have the room to herself.”
Xue Yingxian frowned. She walked over and gently pulled Xian Ning up. “Go take a shower. I’ll wait for you.”
Xian Ning was pushed into the bathroom, leaving only Xue Yingxian and Lu Han in the living room.
Xue Yingxian sat on the other side of the sofa, her voice cold. “Have you forgotten that she’s your sister?”
Lu Han dropped her pretense, her voice even colder than Xue Yingxian’s. “Whether I’ve forgotten or not is none of your business. This is between me and Xian Ning. It’s not for an outsider like you to interfere.”
Xue Yingxian glanced at her with a look of indifference. “I’m just reminding you. As long as you’re on the same family registry, she’ll always be your sister.”
Lu Han turned to face her, her expression now completely icy.
“It’s best not to make baseless assumptions,” Lu Han said dismissively. She shifted her gaze and her tone changed. “How do you know for sure that we’re on the same family registry?”
