- Chapter 8 - Xue Yingxian: "Sister, protect me."
Xian Ning came out with a towel wrapped around her head, and immediately knew something was wrong. Xue Yingxian and Lu Han were sitting on opposite sides of the sofa, both with a look of displeasure. Xian Ning was sure there was an invisible blade between them, and she would be caught in the crossfire if she tried to mediate.
“You two are still watching TV, right? Well, I’m going to bed.”
Time to escape.
Xian Ning didn’t hesitate, heading straight for Lu Han’s room, but a soft hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her back.
“You’re going to leave me all alone?”
Xian Ning turned to face her. Before she could say a word, she was pulled into her own room.
“Why aren’t you sleeping with me?”
Xian Ning almost bit her tongue at the direct question. Xue Yingxian hadn’t let go of her, and her downcast eyes looked genuinely wronged.
“The bed is a little small. I was worried you wouldn’t be comfortable.”
Xian Ning had no idea why she felt sympathy for Xue Yingxian. The other woman was several centimeters taller and could easily overpower her. But when she drooped her head like that, Xian Ning just couldn’t ignore her.
“I won’t be able to sleep alone,” Xue Yingxian said, resting her chin on Xian Ning’s shoulder and gently rubbing her cheek against it.
Xian Ning froze, but Xue Yingxian quickly let go, not giving her a chance to overthink it.
“Do you want to sleep on the inside or the outside?”
Xian Ning flinched. “Either is fine.”
Xue Yingxian climbed onto the bed and took the inside spot. “Then I’ll sleep on the inside,” she said, and then, as if she just remembered something, a smile played on her lips. “My big sister will protect me.”
Xian Ning stiffly climbed into bed and laid as straight as a mummy.
Xue Yingxian wormed her way over, curling up next to her like a kitten, burying her face in Xian Ning’s shoulder.
“Big sister, why is your face so red?”
Her words only made it worse. Now Xian Ning couldn’t ignore the burning heat on her face. Our birthdays are only three days apart. Who are you calling big sister?
Xue Yingxian’s presence was too overwhelming. Xian Ning laid there for a long time, unable to fall asleep. She secretly tried to inch away to the edge of the bed.
A hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her in. She bumped into a soft, warm embrace.
“You’ll fall off if you keep moving.”
This time, Xian Ning really didn’t dare to move. She lay obediently in Xue Yingxian’s arms, even controlling her breathing to avoid making a sound.
“Does your stomach still hurt?” Xue Yingxian asked. Before Xian Ning could answer, she put a hand on her stomach and began to rub it gently.
Xian Ning shot up, reacting more violently than a mouse caught in a trap. “I’ll just sleep on the floor.”
She threw off the blanket and started to get out of bed, but Xue Yingxian held her down.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it. I just wanted to help you feel better.”
Her voice was full of a pathetic vulnerability that made Xian Ning’s heart ache. She lay back down and said, “It’s fine now. Go to sleep.”
Xian Ning wanted to explain, but she didn’t know how. Maybe to Xue Yingxian, she was just being overly sensitive. They had already slept together, so why was she acting so dramatically?
That was the problem!
She was acting this way because they had slept together. She knew herself. If she didn’t get a handle on things, Xue Yingxian would be in danger. A beautiful, soft, and warm woman was right next to her. She wasn’t a monk with a clean heart; how could she not be tempted?
The point was, she couldn’t act on it!
My heart is breaking, and no one knows it but me.
Xue Yingxian was incredibly well-behaved, really curling up beside her like a little dog. A long time passed, and Xian Ning was in that hazy state between sleep and wakefulness when she felt something shift.
She couldn’t sleep. Her mind was a mess.
Xue Yingxian was asleep, her face half-hidden by her hair, softening her features. She looked so innocent, yet so exquisitely beautiful. Xian Ning didn’t know how to describe it. In her previous missions, she had always just coasted through, never paying attention to anyone else. This was the first time she had ever scrutinized a person’s face so closely.
She really is stunning. I’ve felt that way since the first time I saw her.
Otherwise, she, a total sucker for a pretty face, wouldn’t have just grabbed a random person to spend the night with, no matter how drunk she was.
Beauty is misleading.
She watched for a long time, until she felt her own blood rise. She couldn’t help herself. She leaned in and kissed her.
It was a quick peck, but she still felt the softness of Xue Yingxian’s lips. Xian Ning quickly turned over, her back to Xue Yingxian, and held her wildly beating heart.
Beauty is misleading!
Xian Ning buried her face in the blanket, despite the suffocating heat, and reached out to touch her lips, as if the sweet taste of Xue Yingxian was still there. After several attempts of getting too hot and throwing the blanket off, she finally fell asleep.
The next morning, she was woken up by a tickle on her nose. She opened her eyes to see Xue Yingxian’s face right in front of her, magnified by the proximity.
So beautiful! Xian Ning thought in admiration.
Her skin was so fair and smooth, like a peeled egg. Her pores were invisible, and if you looked closely, you could see a faint pink fuzz at the roots of her hair.
It’s no wonder she’s the heroine. Her looks are just perfection.
Xian Ning was setting off mental fireworks for Xue Yingxian’s beauty, not knowing that the other woman’s heart was fluttering too. Time seemed to stop for a moment, leaving no trace of its passing.
Knock, knock, knock.
“Xian Ning, are you up? You’ll be late if you don’t hurry.”
Lu Han’s voice came from the doorway. Both of them started, and their eyes darted away, not knowing where to look.
Xian Ning sprang out of bed and rushed out in her slippers.
Xue Yingxian watched her flustered exit and let out a low laugh.
********
The family was gathered around the table for breakfast, the atmosphere warm and harmonious. Lu Han gave Xian Ning a *baozi (a Chinese steamed bread roll with a filling of meat or vegetables.)
“Eat more, or you’ll be hungry before noon.”
“Thanks, Sis…”
Before Xian Ning could finish her sentence, Xue Yingxian took the baozi from her hand. “This one is bigger. Eat this one.”
Xue Yingxian gave her her own baozi and took a big bite of the one she had just taken, glaring at Lu Han with a hint of provocation. It was a childish move, but it worked. Lu Han felt a wave of frustration, and her appetite disappeared.
Xue Yingxian didn’t realize she was acting like a jealous schoolgirl. She just didn’t want Lu Han to have Xian Ning’s attention, and her behavior had changed unconsciously.
After they finished eating, Lu Han offered to drive them to school, but Xue Yingxian politely refused.
Xian Ning: “?”
Lu Han smiled, a cold glint in her eyes. “I’m taking my sister to school. I don’t think that’s something you get to decide.”
Xue Yingxian glanced at Xian Ning’s parents. “I’m so sorry, Sister Lu Han. I spoke out of turn. What I meant to say was that my driver is waiting downstairs. Xian Ning and I can go together.”
Xian Ning’s mother immediately said, “Oh, don’t worry about it. It’s no trouble at all. Xiaoxian can drive Xian Ning.”
However, as Xue Yingxian was a guest, it would have been rude to deny her.
Lu Han pursed her lips, her eyes growing dark.
Ultimately, Xue Yingxian’s manipulation won out. Not only did she get under Lu Han’s skin, but she also secured a private car ride with Xian Ning. She was in an excellent mood.
Xian Ning wasn’t oblivious to Xue Yingxian’s little schemes, but she couldn’t be bothered to intervene. She’s the heroine. She can do whatever she wants. As long as she’s happy, it’s fine.
As they neared the school, Xue Yingxian asked, “What are you doing this weekend?”
Xian Ning thought for a moment. “Nothing planned. I’ll probably just sleep in and then go shopping with my sister.”
Going shopping with her sister was just an excuse. She needed to meet with Tang Di to assess his condition. She had seen him yesterday and thought he seemed pretty stable, but when she checked again, 033 told her his danger level was at 85%. Pushing him and Xue Yingxian together in that state would be throwing the heroine into a fiery pit.
Xue Yingxian didn’t suspect a thing. She was quiet for a moment. “Do you have to go shopping with your sister? Can’t you go with your little sister?”
Xian Ning: “Huh?”
Xue Yingxian leaned in slightly, her eyes clear and direct. “What I mean is, if I asked you out, would you say yes?”
Xian Ning hadn’t expected the question. In the memories she inherited, Xue Yingxian was incredibly, incredibly busy. She had to juggle her studies while managing the company, practically working all year round. The original owner even had to go to Xue Group headquarters just to argue with her.
For such a busy person to ask her out… Xian Ning was genuinely touched. So, she decided to stick to the mission.
“Lu Han’s annual leave isn’t long, and I already promised her. Can we go out next week instead?”
No way, Xue Yingxian thought. Why does Lu Han get to come before me?
But what came out of her mouth was, “Next week is fine. I’ll work around your schedule.”
The car stopped at the school entrance. The two of them got out, one after the other, once again attracting a lot of attention. As Xian Ning walked with Xue Yingxian, she barely noticed the stares anymore. A little dramatic voice in her head even said, Being stared at is a beautiful woman’s destiny. I get it now.
In truth, their classes didn’t overlap at all. They usually went about their own days. Xue Yingxian even had to go back to the company to work, so they didn’t get much time together. But day by day, they were growing closer.
Xian Ning thought the main reason for this was simply how well Xue Yingxian was treating her. Xue Yingxian would drop her off at school and pick her up afterward. She would eat lunch with her in the cafeteria every day and even bring delicious pastries made by her family’s chef. After a week, Xian Ning felt like she had gained a few pounds.
Xue Yingxian was being so kind, so Xian Ning felt she had to repay her kindness. So, on Saturday afternoon, she began her journey to find Tang Di.
She was still wondering what she should say when a car horn blared, making her jump. A black Mercedes G-Class was parked on the side of the road. The window rolled down, and Tang Di’s face slowly came into view.
He was handsome, in a cold, aloof way, but when she looked into his eyes, Xian Ning felt an inexplicable fear. Unhinged male leads were one thing, but a psychotic one was a ticking time bomb. Who wouldn’t be afraid?
“Get in.”
Gone was the polite gentleman. His voice was cold.
Xian Ning hesitated slightly, and Tang Di’s brow furrowed, his eyes filled with impatience.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Get in the car! Xian Ning gritted her teeth and got in. The car sped off before she even had a chance to buckle her seatbelt.
“Slow down!”
Xian Ning gripped the seatbelt, her heart pounding in her throat.
Tang Di acted as if he didn’t hear her, flooring the gas. Xian Ning could only slump into her seat, holding onto the seatbelt for dear life.
The car screeched to a halt in front of Tang Di’s villa. He got out first, and Xian Ning unbuckled her seatbelt with shaky hands. When she got out, her legs were so wobbly she could barely stand.
Tang Di leaned against the car, smoking a cigarette. “Didn’t you want to cook for me? Go inside.”
Xian Ning followed him down the long driveway. Gardeners were tending to the plants on both sides. When they saw Tang Di, they quickly lowered their heads, not daring to look at him.
She was taken straight to the kitchen. Tang Di stood a short distance away like a foreman.
It’s just one meal. Why is he so obsessed with this?
Xian Ning didn’t understand the mind of a psycho CEO. She put on an apron and began to cook. The refrigerator was well-stocked, but she couldn’t be bothered. She just made a simple curry rice.
Tang Di seemed genuinely hungry. He ate with gusto, not leaving a single grain of rice on the plate. The two of them were the only ones in the restaurant, or perhaps in the entire villa. The servants had been sent away, and Tang Di’s parents didn’t seem to live here.
After he finished eating, Tang Di’s expression improved slightly. He leaned back in his chair and said something that completely blindsided Xian Ning.
“You’re really putting in a lot of effort to move up, aren’t you?”
Xian Ning: “?”
Tang Di let out a cold laugh. “I heard you’ve been spending a lot of time with Xue Yingxian lately.”
Xian Ning didn’t deny it.
“You used to hate her. Why did you suddenly become so nice?”
Tang Di let out a sneer, his expression turning gloomy and unpredictable.
“Didn’t I tell you? I will never marry you. What’s the point of doing all this?”
Xian Ning was completely lost. What did I even do?
Tang Di suddenly stood up, the chair scraping against the floor with a harsh shriek. He slammed his fist on the table, and the dishes shattered on the floor.
The outburst scared Xian Ning. When she came to her senses, a wave of anger washed over her.
“What’s your problem?! I was kind enough to make you a meal. What’s wrong with that?!”
Tang Di clenched his fist, the veins on his hand bulging. His face was flushed red. He was clearly trying to control himself, but it was doing nothing.
“If you didn’t try to break us up, why would Xue Yingxian be so cold to me?!”
Xian Ning didn’t want to try to explain herself to a lunatic. She turned to leave, but Tang Di lunged at her and grabbed her by the throat.
“Talk! Why aren’t you talking?! Do you dare say you didn’t do it?!”
Her face was pressed against the table. No matter how much she struggled, she couldn’t escape Tang Di’s grip.
He snatched her phone, forced her hand to unlock it, and called Xue Yingxian.
“Did you suddenly feel like hanging out with me?”
Xue Yingxian’s voice came from the receiver, a hint of expectation in her tone.
Tang Di’s face turned even darker. He let out a cold snort and put the receiver to Xian Ning’s ear.
“Go on. Say what you always say to her.”
When Xue Yingxian heard Tang Di’s voice, her tone instantly turned cold. “Why do you have Xian Ning’s phone? What did you do to her?”
Xian Ning tried to comfort her. “I’m fine…”
Before she could finish, Tang Di’s grip tightened. She struggled, her breathing becoming difficult.
“Did you ever think this would happen when you were trying to sow discord between us?”
Tang Di’s eyes were bloodshot. He was in a state of madness he didn’t even recognize.
Xue Yingxian’s voice was sharp and commanding, but it had no effect through the phone. She was terrified. She was afraid that Xian Ning would just disappear in front of her.
“Tang Di, if you dare to lay a single finger on her, I swear I’ll make you pay!”
The phone slipped from his hand. Tang Di was staring intently at Xian Ning, his eyes were red and his mind was in a state of frenzy. He doesn’t even recognized Xian Ning.
