- After Being Entangled By the Obsessive Heroine [Quick Wear]
- Chapter 6 - "It's okay even if you only like my body."
It was almost an automatic response. Before her brain could catch up, the words were already out of her mouth.
“Of course… I do.”
But the last three words came out without much conviction. Her eyes drifted away, unable to meet Xue Yingxian’s gaze.
Xue Yingxian’s eyes were too sharp; it felt like they could see right through her. And on top of that… she saw a flicker of unspoken hope in them.
Xian Ning didn’t dare think about what Xue Yingxian was hoping for. She was just here to do a mission. She wasn’t meant to get involved in things outside the plot, and she couldn’t afford to.
Her wavering was so obvious. How could Xue Yingxian not understand? Her mood plummeted instantly, and she even felt a little angry. But even she couldn’t pinpoint what exactly she was angry about.
If they hadn’t had that accidental night, they might not have even been able to sit down and talk so calmly.
Maybe for Lu Xian Ning, “love” was just a word she could say without any special meaning.
In just a few hours, Xue Yingxian felt like the “I love you” Xian Ning had so adamantly declared was a distant memory. This was all just another one of this woman’s tricks to get her attention.
“You’re a good actress.”
Xue Yingxian said it ambiguously, then silently began to eat. Xian Ning was curious, but she didn’t dare ask, and time passed in a quiet stillness.
Xue Yingxian ate very daintily, taking small bites like a rabbit. The sound of her chewing was almost inaudible.
Xian Ning was captivated by her beauty again and stared like a fan. Xue Yingxian tried to ignore her, but her gaze was too direct. It felt like it was drilling a hole in her.
She had pretty much finished her food anyway, so she put down her chopsticks and looked up at Xian Ning. When their eyes met, her heart suddenly gave a little leap, like a ripple spreading across a calm lake.
It was so small it could have been ignored, but she caught it in an instant.
Xue Yingxian paused. “Why are you looking at me like that…” She stopped mid-sentence.
Xian Ning waited for her to continue, but half a minute passed and nothing came.
“Why did you stop talking?”
Xue Yingxian swallowed hard and stood up. “Let’s go. I’ll take you home.”
Xian Ning glanced at the leftovers on the table. “Just a minute. I’ll clean this up.”
Xue Yingxian leaned over to help, and their hands both went for the container at the same time. Xian Ning froze, then quickly pulled her hand away. “I can do it. It won’t take long.”
Xue Yingxian didn’t take her hand back. Instead, she took hold of Xian Ning’s again.
Xian Ning: “?”
“I’ll have Jiang Huai clean up. I’ll bring the container to you another day. Let’s go.”
And just like that, there was a reason for them to meet again.
Xue Yingxian couldn’t figure out what she wanted, and it was bothering her, but she didn’t want to let go of Xian Ning’s hand.
They walked to the parking garage hand in hand. Just as an employee walked past, Xian Ning quickly pulled her hand away. Xue Yingxian curled her fingers, feeling a strange emptiness in her palm.
The car moved smoothly on the road, the elegant cello music filling the air and easing the awkward tension.
Xian Ning was staring blankly out the window, but out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Xue Yingxian’s perfect profile and started daydreaming again.
How can someone be so beautiful? Can’t a beautiful woman just be by herself? Why does she have to be with a psycho male lead?
Xian Ning sighed in resignation.
The car stopped by the side of the road, and Xue Yingxian turned to look at her. Xian Ning was caught in the act and gave her an awkward, not-so-polite smile.
“Lu Xian Ning, when you said you liked me, was it because you wanted my body?”
“Huh?!” Xian Ning was so startled she almost choked on her saliva.
Xue Yingxian looked at her, her eyes calm but sharp. “You used to hate me so much, you thought the air was polluted if we were in the same room. Why do you suddenly not hate me anymore?”
“I already told you,” Xian Ning said. “I was pretending to hate you to get your attention.”
Xue Yingxian gave a cryptic smile. “I can tell the difference between real hate and fake hate.”
Oh no, Xian Ning thought. My carefully crafted excuse has been exposed. How am I supposed to talk my way out of this?
Thinking of what Xue Yingxian said, Xian Ning’s gaze kept darting to her body. Her figure was indeed perfect: slender, lithe, and flawlessly pale.
Xue Yingxian grew impatient under her stare. Something felt like it was about to burst out of a shell. She fought the rising anxiety and said to Xian Ning, “You haven’t gotten out of the car. Are you trying to come with me?”
Xian Ning realized they were already at the entrance to her complex.
“Be careful on your way home, get some rest, and goodbye!”
She opened the car door, got out, and closed the door in one swift motion, already two meters away by the time the words came out of her mouth.
Xue Yingxian watched the flustered figure, and for some reason, her mood brightened. The smile on her face lasted for less than a minute. Her eyes grew dark and filled with confusion and bewilderment.
In that moment, if Xian Ning had said she wanted to go with her, she would have taken her without a second thought. Even if she only wanted her body, it would have been fine.
But why would it be fine? This was such an absurd thought. Yet, if the other person was Xian Ning, she felt like anything was acceptable.
What went wrong?
Xue Yingxian was lost in a spiral of self-doubt. Her mind was a complicated mess, and she couldn’t come to a conclusion.
Xian Ning ran into the complex as if her life depended on it. She only slowed down when she was sure Xue Yingxian couldn’t see her.
That was a close one! She had almost given in and agreed to spend the night with her. While Xue Yingxian hadn’t said it explicitly, after asking that question and then telling her to “come with me,” the implication was pretty obvious.
If this was an unimportant character, she might have agreed since both parties were consenting adults. But the problem was, Xue Yingxian was the heroine.
“033, I want to…”
【Don’t even think about it!】
033 cut her off immediately.
Xian Ning whined. “Fine.”
In that case, she would have to work on the male lead.
Based on the plot, Tang Di was erratic because he had bipolar disorder. If she cured his illness, would Xue Yingxian be treated differently?
Her common sense told her to mind her own business, but the thought of such a beautiful person going through that made her inexplicably sad.
Xian Ning let out a long sigh. “I’ve turned into a Saint Mary without even realizing it.”
But she couldn’t just stand by and watch a beautiful flower wither away. She simply couldn’t.
Before going to bed, Xian Ning took Tang Di off her block list. There were still a bunch of missed calls and a long string of messages. Judging by the tone of the last few, his patience was probably gone.
After some thought, Xian Ning replied, saying she’d go see him tomorrow, then she turned her phone off and went to sleep, so her dreams wouldn’t be interrupted.
Late into the night, Tang Di stood in his messy living room, staring at his phone with a sinister look. After a few seconds, he slammed it onto the marble floor.
The screen cracked into a spiderweb.
The maids nearby held their breath, huddling together in the corner, trying to ease their fear. The young master’s illness had gotten a lot better, hadn’t it? Why was he acting like this again?
They exchanged glances, then buried their heads even lower, wishing they could crawl into the cracks of the floor.
Tang Di closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. The veins on his forehead bulged from the effort of controlling his rage. After a moment, he opened his eyes. The sinister, gloomy look had been replaced by a quiet calm. He knelt down and picked up the shattered phone, a chilling smile on his lips.
“Heh! So many tricks!”
The glass shards pierced his skin, and his palm was stained red. The smile faded, and his eyes were filled with an even deeper coldness.
The maids didn’t dare to look up until they heard his footsteps disappear. They let out a long sigh of relief, as if they had just survived a disaster.
“He scared me to death!”
“Me too. I’m covered in a cold sweat.”
“Did the young master get worse than before? He…”
The housekeeper came in with a new decoration, and their conversation stopped abruptly. Over the years, this sort of thing had happened many times, and any maids with loose lips had been fired long ago.
The messy floor was soon pristine, and the decorations were all back in their proper places, as if nothing had happened. The mansion stood quietly in the city, beautiful on the outside, but no one dared to probe what was within.
The next day, Xian Ning was dragged out of bed by her sister, her mind in a complete daze. She sat in the classroom like a ghost until two classes passed, and she realized the person next to her was Xue Yingxian.
Xian Ning’s mind slowly came back to her. She swallowed hard, and Xue Yingxian turned her head to look at her, her expression seeming to say, “And you still say you don’t want my body?”
“No, no, don’t get the wrong idea. I just woke up, that’s why I’m like this. You get it, right?”
Xue Yingxian looked at the pillow creases on her face and nodded noncommittally. She sat up straight, her eyes on her textbook, a faint smile playing on her lips.
Xian Ning could tell she was just humoring her. “Are you even listening to me? I’m really not thirsty for your body!”
Xue Yingxian turned to face her, her smile widening. “Did I say anything?”
Xian Ning was speechless and quietly looked away.
She appeared to be studying, but her mind was a complete blank. Xue Yingxian’s intense gaze made half of her face feel like it was on fire.
The plot has gone a little off track, but don’t panic. I can still handle this.
Xian Ning’s hands trembled slightly, but her face was as steady as a rock. She asked Xue Yingxian, “Has Tang Di been looking for you lately?”
The official couple was the main priority. Her own allure was only temporary, and Xue Yingxian would soon lose interest.
Xue Yingxian saw the eagerness in her eyes and assumed she was trying to pry for information about Tang Di. Her eyes grew colder.
“Do I have to report my schedule to you now?”
Xian Ning was taken aback, unable to figure out why her expression had suddenly changed. As expected, a genius like her is beyond the comprehension of a mere mortal like me.
“I was just asking.” She mumbled quietly. “It’s even better if you guys are going on a date.”
Xue Yingxian thought she was being sarcastic, and her face darkened further. It wasn’t that she was intentionally being malicious; it was just that ever since they’d met, Xian Ning had always been so cruel to her. Aside from her actions, she always had to get the last word in with insults and sarcasm.
Xian Ning watched her face turn sour, and she felt like a total deer in headlights.
What did I do wrong this time?
The bell rang, and the teacher walked in with a textbook. The atmosphere shifted instantly, and Xian Ning sighed in relief. That bell had just saved her.
But her relief didn’t last long. She was asleep again by the middle of the class.
Xue Yingxian stared at her book, but the words seemed to be mocking her for being so delusional. She frowned and looked over at Xian Ning, who had her back to her.
While she was feeling so troubled, the one who had caused it all was sound asleep.
Strangely enough, after staring at that perfectly round head for a while, she began to feel a little better.
A gentle breeze blew through, stirring a few of Xian Ning’s hairs, which brushed lightly against her hand. The tickle sent a shiver through her, and her heart skipped a beat.
Xue Yingxian took hold of the stray strand, thinking that maybe she could be forgiven after all.
The class ended quickly, and the bell rang again. Students left in small groups until only a few were left in the classroom, including Xian Ning and Xue Yingxian.
Xian Ning rubbed her eyes and sat up. “Why aren’t you going to lunch?”
Xue Yingxian stood up and said softly, “Let’s go.”
Xian Ning obediently stood up. After a few steps, she asked, “Where are we going?”
Xue Yingxian looked at her dazed expression and felt a sense of delight. “To eat. You need to wake up, or someone will sell you and you won’t even know it.”
Xian Ning puffed out her chest. “I’m a genius.”
“Uh-huh, of course you are.” Xue Yingxian started walking.
“You’re just humoring me again!” Xian Ning huffed and hurried to catch up, walking side-by-side with her.
Xue Yingxian didn’t reply, but the relaxed look on her face showed she was in a good mood.
Xian Ning glanced at her from the corner of her eye, a smile spreading across her face. Who said they had to be lovers? Being friends was fine, too.
However, Xian Ning underestimated the original owner’s knack for self-sabotage. The ten-minute walk from the classroom to the cafeteria was a parade of stares. Everyone was in disbelief, as if they were watching Mars collide with Earth.
Xue Yingxian was a public figure, so a little attention was expected, but this was too much. It seemed like the entire school knew she was on bad terms with Xue Yingxian.
Xue Yingxian didn’t seem to notice anyone else, walking as if no one were there. As they neared the cafeteria, she asked, “What do you want to eat?”
Xian Ning wanted to say “anything,” but she had a feeling she would get an icy glare from Xue Yingxian if she did.
“Noodles.”
The cafeteria had a variety of noodles, so she could take her time choosing.
Xue Yingxian saw her indecision and made the choice for her. “Okay, let’s go get ramen.”
As expected, being with Xue Yingxian meant more attention. From ordering to finding a seat, there were a few pairs of eyes glued to them like sticky glue that wouldn’t go away.
Xian Ning leaned in and whispered to Xue Yingxian, “Let’s eat separately next time.”
Xue Yingxian’s face soured. “Why?”
“Being with you is too eye-catching. I feel like an exhibit. Who can stand that?”
So that’s why. Xue Yingxian’s mood was on a rollercoaster, up and down so fast it was making her dizzy.
“You’re not the only one getting attention.”
Xian Ning pouted. “Why would anyone be looking at me?”
Xue Yingxian stayed silent, lowering her eyes slightly. For someone with that face to ask such a question was completely unconvincing. If it were before, she would have thought Xian Ning was bragging, but now she felt it was a genuine question.
She couldn’t explain why, but if she had to, it was because those big, innocent eyes were too bright and pure, like stars. How could a person like that lie?
Besides, even if she was bragging, so what? Xian Ning had the right to.
Her phone rang while she was eating, but Xian Ning ignored it and happily slurped her noodles. The whole bowl was gone in a flash.
It was Xue Yingxian’s first time eating with Xian Ning, and she was surprised at how heartily she ate. It made her, someone who didn’t really like noodles, eat a few more bites than usual.
Seeing there was still a little bit left in Xue Yingxian’s bowl, Xian Ning, not wanting to waste food, took it and finished it in front of a stunned Xue Yingxian.
When she finished, she saw Xue Yingxian staring at her with a complicated expression. Xian Ning immediately realized what she’d done. “Oh, sorry, were you still eating?”
“No, I’m full,” Xue Yingxian said, her mind reeling but her face giving nothing away.
Xian Ning grinned. “I thought you weren’t.”
Seeing her sweet and innocent face, Xue Yingxian’s heart fluttered ever so slightly.
The two walked out of the cafeteria and saw a crowd gathered at the entrance. Xian Ning wanted to go see what the commotion was, but the next second, the situation flipped, and she became the center of attention.
The crowd parted in two, and a man in a suit slowly walked towards them.
The man had deep-set eyes, sharp features, and his eyes were a light color. He was clearly of mixed descent. Surrounded by college students, this man with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, long legs, and a mature aura stood out like a sore thumb, causing a huge stir.
Tang Di reached the two women in a few strides, his height giving him an uncomfortable air of dominance.
Xue Yingxian thought he was looking for her and was about to tell him to leave her alone, but she saw him turn his attention to Xian Ning instead.
“You don’t have class this afternoon, right? I was in the neighborhood anyway, so I came to pick you up.”
Xue Yingxian was already in a foul mood the moment he looked at Xian Ning. It felt like her property was being coveted.
Tang Di glanced at Xue Yingxian from the corner of his eye and added, “Didn’t you say you’d cook for me last night? I want to eat it as soon as possible.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the temperature in the air seemed to drop a few degrees. Xian Ning secretly glanced at Xue Yingxian, whose face had turned as dark as the bottom of a wok.
Oh no.
