- Chapter 30.2 - She bit her neck.
When they arrived at the fighting arena, many people turned to look at them. Xian Ning knew they were looking at Qin Rong, so she quietly created some distance between them.
Qin Rong looked at her, confused and a little hurt. Xian Ning acted like she didn’t notice and found an empty seat to sit in. A moment later, a hurt voice came from behind her.
“Why are you acting like we’re not close? Is it that embarrassing to be seen with me?”
Xian Ning, who was sneaking a piece of fruit from the table, nearly choked. Without turning around, she explained, “You know a lot of people don’t like you, right? They all want to beat you but they can’t. So what do you think they’ll do?”
“What will they do?”
“They’ll take their anger out on the people around you. They can’t beat you, but they can beat up the useless person next to you. If I get chosen as a challenger, there’s nothing you can do to stop it.”
That was a rule of the Immortal Sect competition. Once you were chosen to be challenged, you had to accept. You couldn’t surrender before stepping onto the stage. Xian Ning knew her own worth. With her level of cultivation, if she were chosen, all she could do was get beaten up. It would be fine if the person was a gentleman who knew when to stop, but what if they were a jealous type who took out all their resentment towards Qin Rong on her? She’d be finished.
Qin Rong was just too high-profile. She was aloof and detached. She treated everyone’s flattery like hot air and never gave anyone a shred of face. She hadn’t been in the sect for long, but she had few friends and many detractors. Of course, this was partly due to the original owner of this body, who had gone around badmouthing Qin Rong, making people who didn’t know the truth believe she was arrogant and looked down on everyone. Many people hated her without ever getting to know her. After all, Qin Rong was a genius in the Immortal Sect, and it was easy to tear her down with a few words, so many people were happy to do so.
Qin Rong found her reasoning sound, but she still didn’t want to be so far away from Xian Ning, so she secretly took her hand. Xian Ning looked down at their clasped hands, a small smile on her face.
Li Zhao’s sharp gaze immediately found them, and he strode through the crowd to where they were sitting.
Xian Ning’s head began to ache. If Second Senior Brother caught them, she would be subjected to a long lecture. Li Zhao looked at the two of them when he arrived and seemed pleased enough.
“That traitor, Fan Hua, actually dared to sneak onto the mountain! It makes me so mad!”
Xian Ning looked at him, seeing he was truly angry. “Did you have fight with Senior Sister Fan Hua?”
“I did. And I lost. What else would I be so angry about?”
Xian Ning felt this was a completely reasonable explanation.
Li Zhao was so consumed by the feeling of being defeated that he didn’t lecture them. A moment later, a young disciple from the outer sect came over and sat next to Xian Ning.
“Senior Sister, how are you feeling?”
The girl looked about fifteen or sixteen. She had a round face and big, almond-shaped eyes. She was innocent and cute. A smile filled her eyes as she looked at Xian Ning, revealing her straight, white teeth. Her slightly protruding canines gave her a playful look.
“I’m fine, thank you for your concern.”
The girl’s smile grew wider. “You’re welcome. If it weren’t for you, I would have been swallowed up by a demon beast a long time ago. I should be the one thanking you.”
Xian Ning finally remembered. This girl was one of the outer sect disciples who went on the trial with her. Her name was…
“Rui…”
“Rui Yun.” Rui Yun’s eyes curved into crescent moons. They were clear and bright like a lake.
“Right, Rui Yun! What a memory I have,” Xian Ning said apologetically.
“It’s okay. It’s not too late to remember now.” Rui Yun leaned a little closer, blinking her big eyes. “Senior Sister, can I come to Bamboo Gazing Peak to play with you sometimes?”
Xian Ning was about to say yes when a hand suddenly pinched her waist, making her gasp in pain.
“What’s wrong?” Rui Yun asked.
Xian Ning grabbed the hand at her waist and replied, “Recently, I’ve had a feeling my cultivation is about to increase, so I’m going to soak in Junior Sister Qin’s spiritual spring. You probably won’t find me at Bamboo Peak.”
Rui Yun looked disappointed. “Okay, then.” But then a sunny look came over her face again. “It’s alright. I’ll wait for you to come back.”
Xian Ning laughed it off. “We’ll see.” After her reply, she held Qin Rong’s hand tightly, not giving her a chance to act up again.
Rui Yun then asked some questions about cultivation. She had joined the sect late, and her cultivation wasn’t much better than Xian Ning’s, but Xian Ning patiently answered all of her questions. They sat together, looking quite close.
As they chatted, Xian Ning felt a chill on her back. A low huff from Qin Rong made her immediately move further away from Rui Yun. Oh, right. She’d forgotten she had a little jar of vinegar right behind her.
Rui Yun glanced at Qin Rong behind them, her eyes darting between the two of them, but she looked confused.
Just then, the gong on the fighting stage was struck. The announcer’s voice rang out: “Chu Wufeng of Yingzhou challenges disciple Rui Yun of the Jade Purity Sect.”
Rui Yun was clearly startled. She looked at Xian Ning, her eyes filled with an unknown fear. She had only joined the sect recently and wasn’t on the official list. Why would anyone want to challenge her?
Xian Ning was also puzzled. The disciples of Yingzhou were very powerful. Why would a disciple from a powerful sect not challenge a Nascent Soul cultivator but instead pick an unknown Foundation Establishment cultivator? What was the meaning of this?
And that man on the stage… even though he had a rough face that Xian Ning didn’t recognize at all, he gave her a faint sense of familiarity. Where had she seen him before?
Rui Yun stood up and took a deep breath. “Senior Sister, I’m going up now,” she said to Xian Ning.
Xian Ning stood up with her and patted her on the shoulder. “Don’t be afraid. If you can’t win, just surrender. You’ll be fine.”
Even as she said that, a strange feeling of unease settled in her heart. She didn’t know why, but the man on the stage felt dangerous. It should be fine. It’s just a competition. It’s not like he’s going to openly kill someone, is it?
Rui Yun walked onto the stage, holding her sword and bowing to her opponent. Before she could even straighten up, a sword already pierced her arm. Blood instantly stained her light purple uniform.
The man had no intention of being a gentleman; his preemptive strike had given him the upper hand. Rui Yun was forced onto the defensive, getting pushed back repeatedly. She was already covered in several wounds. Just as she was about to surrender, Chu Wufeng struck her in the chest with his palm. A wisp of black demonic energy silently burrowed into her heart.
Rui Yun clutched her heart and collapsed, her lips trembling, unable to make a sound.
Chu Wufeng retracted his sword and said scornfully, “It looks like the disciples of the Jade Purity Sect aren’t much to speak of.”
Rui Yun was carried off the stage. Xian Ning watched Chu Wufeng, and the sense of familiarity grew stronger. As she was studying the man, he looked up at her with a wicked smirk on his face.
“If the outer sect disciples are no good, then how about an inner sect disciple?”
Xian Ning’s heart sank. She instantly realized what was happening.
“Chu Wufeng challenges another disciple from the Jade Purity Sect—Xian Ning!”
The moment Xian Ning’s name was called, Qin Rong shot up from her seat. Her eyes were icy as she stared at the man on the stage. Her voice was devoid of all warmth. “Senior Sister Xian Ning is still recovering from a serious injury. I’ll accept this challenge on her behalf.”
Chu Wufeng let out a sinister chuckle. “It seems the Jade Purity Sect is full of nothing but cowards and useless people. Why even hold the great Immortal Sect competition? You might as well be removed from the Immortal Sects. Then you wouldn’t have to participate anymore.”
Qin Rong’s face changed and she was about to fly down to the stage when Xian Ning grabbed her. She shoved a spirit fruit that looked like a grape into Qin Rong’s hand and said gently, “Don’t be rash. He’s deliberately trying to provoke us.”
“This guy is strong and his moves are vicious. You’ll definitely get hurt.”
“If I can’t beat him, I’ll just surrender. Elder Jiang is right there. I’ll be fine.”
Xian Ning’s voice was soft and soothing. She then turned her gaze to Chu Wufeng, her eyes dark and serious.
A disciple of Yingzhou wouldn’t be this deranged. His actions weren’t those of a righteous person. Coupled with the fact that he was targeting her, it was almost certain he wasn’t a member of the Immortal Sects.
Xian Ning couldn’t be sure if he was the person she suspected, so she needed to go up there and confirm. Moreover, if he truly was that person, he was able to easily impersonate an Yingzhou disciple, which meant his cultivation was no longer what it once was. If Qin Rong went in her place and got hurt by his treachery, it would be an even greater loss. She would rather get hurt herself than let anything happen to Qin Rong.
Stepping onto the stage, Xian Ning wasn’t as polite as Rui Yun. She also didn’t attack right away. She stared at Chu Wufeng and asked him in a cold voice, “Jing Ji, you’re no longer a disciple of the Immortal Sects. What is your purpose in coming to the Jade Purity Sect?”
Chu Wufeng froze for a moment, and a flash of murderous intent crossed his eyes. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. No matter what nonsense you spew, I won’t go easy on you!” With that, he attacked with his long sword, which was shrouded in a cold aura.
Xian Ning barely managed to dodge. Before she could even catch her breath, his sword came at her again. She turned and used her own sword to block his, and her hand went numb from the impact. If he attacked one more time, she wouldn’t be able to dodge it.
Xian Ning had exposed Jing Ji’s true identity, but she still couldn’t get close enough to him. He was using Chu Wufeng’s skin, so he was naturally bound by that body. If she could find a flaw, she could prove he wasn’t who he seemed.
While dodging his attacks, Xian Ning studied him. She noticed a red mark on his neck that looked like a cut from a sharp object. Had he directly peeled off Chu Wufeng’s skin and put it on himself?
A shiver of disgust ran through her. She was caught off guard, and her right arm was pierced. A wave of sharp pain hit her, and her sword clattered to the ground. Cold sweat broke out all over her body. Xian Ning knew a normal sword wound wouldn’t be this severe. She turned her head and saw black demonic energy seeping from her arm. No wonder he was able to kill an Yingzhou disciple. It turned out he had fallen into a demon’s path.
Xian Ning’s vision went blurry. She turned to look at Elder Jiang and said, “Elder Jiang, he… is a demon.” With those words, she collapsed.
Instead of hitting the ground, she fell into a warm embrace. The light scent of bamboo filled her nose, and the pain seemed to lessen. Fan Hua held her, her eyes was as soft and gentle as water. Jing Ji had been about to kill Xian Ning. When Chu Wufinh saw this, a look of jealousy flashed across his face. “Young master, you can’t let her go!”
Fan Hua’s expression changed instantly. With a flick of her sleeve, she sent Jing Ji flying off the stage. “Did I not tell you not to touch her?”
Jing Ji spat out a mouthful of blood and immediately knelt on the ground. “This subordinate knows his mistake. Please, have mercy.”
Fan Hua’s gaze was cold. “If there’s a next time, I’ll throw you into the Ten Thousand Demon Abyss to be fed to the beasts.”
Jing Ji knelt on the ground, trembling and not daring to look up.
Fan Hua picked up Xian Ning, intending to leave, but several people stood in her way. The first was Qin Rong, who pointed her sword at Fan Hua’s face.
“Put Xian Ning down!” Qin Rong’s face was frosty, and her voice was as cold as ice.
Fan Hua sneered, a mocking look in her eyes. “You think you can protect her if she stays with you?”
Qin Rong was speechless. Since they started their trial together, it seemed she was always powerless whenever Xian Ning was hurt. But even so, she would not let Fan Hua take her away.
“I will protect her to the best of my ability,” Qin Rong said, twisting her wrist. Her immortal sword hummed with power. “Besides, did you ask for her opinion? Does she even want to go with you?”
This was a blow to Fan Hua, and her face darkened. In the time it took for them to talk, disciples from the various sects had already formed a circle around the two demons. Fan Hua had been too rushed to disguise herself. She had horns on her head, and her body was surrounded by demonic energy, making it impossible to hide who she was.
Elder Jiang held her sword, her face expressionless. “Fan Hua, you were once a disciple of our sect. Surrender obediently, and I will give you a chance to explain.” Of course, this was just a trick. Everyone present with a decent cultivation knew that Fan Hua was a born demon, not a half-demon like Jing Ji. Not only were there physical differences, but there was also a huge gap in their cultivation. This was what Elder Jiang was worried about, which was why she wanted to avoid a fight. Otherwise, there would be a lot of casualties.
Fan Hua looked at the disciples who were surrounding them, wanting to fight but not daring to. She let out a contemptuous laugh. “With just you all?”
The sword in Qin Rong’s hand was already charged with power, and the blade glowed with a chilling light, looking incredibly sharp. “Even if we can’t defeat you, with so many people, it won’t be easy for you to leave. If you put Xian Ning down, I can guarantee your safe departure.” Qin Rong was afraid that if she angered Fan Hua, she would hurt Xian Ning, so she had to make a deal. Capturing a demon could be done at any time, but nothing could be allowed to happen to Xian Ning.
With the demonic energy in her body, Xian Ning’s spiritual energy was nearly gone. Her face was as pale as a sheet, and blood had soaked her clothes so much it was hard to tell where the wounds were. Qin Rong was anxious and ready to fight for her.
Fan Hua still didn’t want to let her go, but before she could take a step, Xian Ning began to cough violently. Blood spilled from the corners of her mouth and wouldn’t stop. Qin Rong’s eyes widened in horror. Her long sword hummed. “She’ll die if you keep this up! Do you want her to die?!”
Fan Hua had no choice but to hand her over to Qin Rong. She then fought her way out, while Jing Ji, severely injured, was chased into the dense forest.
Qin Rong took Xian Ning back, treated her wounds, and fed her many spirit medicines, but there was no sign of improvement. Qin Rong had no choice but to invite her master.
The sect master, Peng Lian, looked at Xian Ning and her face grew solemn. “Demonic energy has entered her body and damaged her heart. Even if she wakes up, I’m afraid she will…” She didn’t finish her sentence. Instead, she poured her own spiritual energy into Xian Ning to protect her heart and temporarily suppressed the demonic energy inside her. Although Xian Ning didn’t wake up, her complexion improved significantly.
Afterward, Peng Lian turned to leave. As she walked away, Qin Rong pleaded with her. “Master, please keep the fact that Senior Sister was afflicted by demonic energy a secret.”
Peng Lian sighed and nodded softly, walking away with her hands behind her back.
Qin Rong stayed by Xian Ning’s bedside all night without closing her eyes. She spent the entire night wiping away sweat and boiling medicine for her. It wasn’t until dawn that she finally gave in to exhaustion and dozed off.
Xian Ning felt like she was dying from the pain. Her heart felt like it was on fire. Soon, the pain was replaced by another emotion. An intense longing for something filled her. She suddenly opened her eyes, a flash of red in her pupils.
Her limbs were stiff and weak, but she managed to move her fingers, which woke Qin Rong, who was holding her hand while she slept.
“You’re awake!” Qin Rong said, her voice filled with joy.
Xian Ning turned her head to look at her, her gaze falling on her fair, slender neck. Her tongue and teeth began to itch, and her mouth started to water. “Junior Sister Qin, can you come closer to me?”
Qin Rong leaned in. “What do you want to say?”
Xian Ning’s tongue brushed against her canine teeth. “Closer,” she said in a hoarse voice.
Qin Rong leaned in a little more. Xian Ning grabbed the back of her head and pushed that lotus-like neck to her mouth. The sensation of her teeth sinking into the skin made Xian Ning shiver with relief. The taste of fresh blood briefly quelled the restlessness in her heart, but soon the craving came back tenfold.
It’s not enough. Not enough!
Xian Ning flipped over, straddling Qin Rong, and opened her mouth wide, biting down on her neck. Blood gushed into her mouth. Xian Ning’s eyes widened, and a dark red glow faintly appeared around her.
Qin Rong felt her blood being drawn away, but she didn’t want to push Xian Ning away. The stinging sensation came again. She wrapped her arms around Xian Ning’s slender waist and slowly closed her eyes.
