- Chapter 31 - Die in front of you.
Xian Ning continued to suck the blood, but the warmth of it did nothing to quench the desire in her heart. In fact, it only made her more ravenous.
This wasn’t enough. Besides the blood, she wanted something more…
Her tongue ached, and her teeth longed to chew on something.
Xian Ning stopped sucking and opened her mouth wide to bite down. A low cry of pain reached her ears, and she instantly became lucid.
A deep indentation of teeth remained on Qin Rong’s neck, blood seeping from the puncture wounds where her canines had been. It trickled down her pale skin. Xian Ning stared blankly for a few seconds, then pushed Qin Rong away.
“Why didn’t you fight back?”
Qin Rong looked at the panicked figure, a reassuring smile on her face. “It’s fine. It doesn’t hurt at all.”
Lies! How could it not hurt?
She thought this, but her eyes were drawn to the crimson blood. Xian Ning realized something was wrong with her and quickly looked away.
“Stay away from me.”
Qin Rong reached out to grab her, but Xian Ning brushed her hand away.
“I said, stay away from me!”
Qin Rong froze, her hand hovering in the air for a moment before slowly pulling back.
“Are you in any pain? Do your wounds hurt?”
Her voice was incredibly gentle, almost fawning, as if she couldn’t see Xian Ning’s abnormal state.
Xian Ning knew Qin Rong was deliberately ignoring what was happening, but she couldn’t let herself harm her.
“Junior Sister, I’m hungry.”
Qin Rong, who had been on edge, immediately smiled. It was like snow on an iceberg melting in an instant.
“Just a moment. I’ll go make you something.”
Qin Rong spoke, and before she left, she handed Xian Ning a cup of water. It was neither hot nor cold, just the right temperature.
Xian Ning held the cup and waited until the sound of footsteps faded before looking up. Qin Rong’s posture was straight and tall, her figure slender and graceful. The hem of her skirt swayed with each step, like a blooming purple flower.
She looked thinner than before.
Xian Ning lowered her head, her heart a tangled mess, and tightened her grip on the cup.
A sudden pain shot through her chest, and that gnawing urge to tear into something rose again. The wound on her arm began to burn.
Xian Ning put the cup down and pulled at her collar, looking at her chest. A wisp of demonic energy spread out from her heart, moving through her body.
The wound, which had already stopped bleeding, tore open again. Blood gushed out, soaking through her clothes in no time.
The smell of blood made her bloodlust even more intense. Even from this distance, she could smell the sweetness of Qin Rong’s blood. Xian Ning quickly covered her mouth and stumbled off the bed, running out of the room.
Anywhere would be fine, as long as she was away from Qin Rong. Otherwise, she would surely hurt her.
Fortunately, Qin Rong was in the kitchen and didn’t see her run out.
Qin Rong’s residence didn’t originally have a kitchen. Since she didn’t need to eat, she had built one herself to cook for Xian Ning.
It turned out she was quite talented at cooking. The unpalatable spiritual plants became edible after she was done with them.
The aroma of the food mixed with the scent of blood, confusing Xian Ning. She didn’t know which temptation was causing the clawing feeling in her heart.
Her teeth felt much sharper, biting into her lower lip. A little pressure was all it took for them to sink deep into her flesh. Blood dripped from her chin onto her clothes, slowly spreading.
She purposely took a secluded path down the mountain but still ran into people. Two outer-sect disciples saw her in this state. They were startled at first, then rushed to help her.
Xian Ning quickly held out her hand to stop them. In her agitation, her foot landed on something, and a sharp pain shot through it.
The two girls looked at each other, their faces filled with concern.
“Senior Sister, should we take you back?”
Xian Ning’s vision was already blurry, but her attention was still on their necks, where she could see their pulses beating beneath the thin skin.
“No, just go!”
Her rationality was slowly being consumed. The words were squeezed out from between her teeth.
She clenched her hands tightly, her fingertips piercing her palms, using the pain to stop herself from rushing up and biting their throats.
Footsteps sounded from behind her. Before Xian Ning could turn to look, she was caught in a warm embrace.
“I’ll take care of Little Senior Sister. You two can go on your way.”
The two outer-sect disciples bowed and left. Qin Rong held Xian Ning’s waist, gradually tightening her grip.
Xian Ning’s entire body was burning. Her bones felt like they were being cooked, and she had no strength left.
“Qin Rong, let me go!”
This was the first time she had called Qin Rong by her name, and she hadn’t expected it to be in this situation.
Qin Rong buried her face in the crook of Xian Ning’s neck. “No,” she said in a muffled voice. “I will never let you go.”
Xian Ning felt her teeth clenching. Her temples throbbed, and the blood still pouring from her wounds made her dizzy.
“Can’t you see what a monster I’ve become? Stay away from me, or I’ll hurt you.”
“Then hurt me. My cultivation is high, and my body can heal quickly. I’m not afraid of being hurt by you.”
Xian Ning took a deep breath, grabbing the hand wrapped around her waist. Her voice was hoarse. “What if I can’t control myself and hurt someone else? Can you take responsibility for that?”
Qin Rong’s body stiffened for a moment, then she replied with conviction, “Yes. If I have to, I’ll pay with my life. But until then, you are not to leave me for even a moment.”
Xian Ning’s nose stung, and her eyes felt hot. She bit her lip, holding back tears. “Fine,” she said in a low voice. “I’ll go back with you. Just let go of me first.”
Qin Rong probably didn’t believe her. She only loosened one arm. When Xian Ning turned around, Qin Rong was first shocked, then filled with heartache.
“Don’t do this to yourself. I’ll give you anything you want.”
She reached out and caressed Xian Ning’s face, gently wiping away the blood on her chin. Her movements were gentle, as if she were afraid of hurting her.
The blood on Qin Rong’s neck had been wiped away, leaving only two rows of bruised teeth marks and four bloody punctures. Xian Ning had no idea her teeth were so sharp. She felt like she must look like a rabid beast.
Qin Rong used her spiritual energy to forcefully stop the bleeding from Xian Ning’s wounds, then lifted her into her arms.
Xian Ning was nestled in her embrace. A slight tilt of her head was all it would take to bite Qin Rong’s neck. To resist this primal urge, she clenched her teeth so hard that her gums bled.
“Don’t make it so hard on yourself. Just bite me if you want to.”
Xian Ning looked up at her. In her blurry vision, she saw a pair of gentle, indulgent eyes, as if she could do anything she pleased.
Beneath the fair, delicate skin were blue veins. One look was all it took for Xian Ning’s heart to race. A wave of heat rushed to her head, shattering her last shred of reason.
Qin Rong lowered her head and kissed Xian Ning on her bloodied lips. “You just want some blood, right? I’ll give it to you.”
Xian Ning couldn’t hold back any longer. She bit down on Qin Rong’s neck. Qin Rong only faltered for a second before continuing her steady walk toward the house.
Xian Ning drank the blood greedily, a restless anxiety in her heart. The burning pain in her bones suddenly intensified. She saw a flash of black and passed out.
*******
A bloody red haze filled her vision. The air was thick with the stench of gore, and the pained screams of others echoed in her ears, sending a chill down her spine.
Her body felt like it was trapped in a swamp, sinking deeper the more she struggled.
The air was damp, and a sticky, unpleasant substance covered her, but it was thicker than water.
Xian Ning forced her eyes open, and the sight before her stole her breath.
Disciples from her sect were scattered on the ground, their eyes wide and empty, staring at her, unable to rest in peace.
Her hands were covered in blood. Her legs were sinking into the thick, black pool of blood beneath her.
How did this happen?!
Did I kill them?
The blood soon covered most of her body, and a suffocating feeling overcame her. Xian Ning finally began to struggle, waving her arms weakly, but she couldn’t stop the blood from rushing in on all sides.
In a daze, she saw Qin Rong and frantically reached out to her.
“Junior Sister Qin, save me!”
Qin Rong watched her with a cold, detached expression.
Xian Ning’s panic rose. She asked Qin Rong why she was just watching her die. A sinister smile crossed Qin Rong’s face, and a gaping wound appeared on her neck. Blood poured from it, splashing all over Xian Ning’s face.
“Have you forgotten? You’ve already killed me.”
Qin Rong’s body broke into pieces, melting into the thick, bloody water. Xian Ning screamed, waking up from her nightmare.
Xian Ning’s eyes shot open. She gasped for air, her face drenched in sweat, her hair sticking to her skin.
Qin Rong was at her bedside in an instant. “What’s wrong?!” she asked anxiously.
Xian Ning lunged and wrapped her arms around her, tears streaming down her face without warning.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
Qin Rong held her, running a hand over the back of her head. “It’s not your fault,” she comforted. “Don’t blame yourself.”
Xian Ning’s tears flowed even more. How could she not? If she really did harm Qin Rong and others, she could never atone for it.
Qin Rong nudged Xian Ning’s cheek with hers, then cupped her face. “It’ll be okay. I used some spiritual medicine. You’ll be well very soon.”
Xian Ning sniffled, then managed a weak smile. “Okay.”
She could no longer feel the demonic energy, but it was only temporarily suppressed. She had no idea when she would lose control again.
Continuing to stay by Qin Rong’s side would only lead to disaster.
Demonic energy grew with desire. Now it was just a thirst for blood, but what about later?
Her teeth were still aching. The urge to chew on flesh and blood was still there.
*******
Early the next morning, Qin Rong went to her master’s residence to gather herbs. Before she left, she set a barrier around the house to prevent Xian Ning from running away.
Xian Ning had been in a haze of sleep when a sudden commotion outside woke her. She got dressed, and as soon as she opened her door, someone tackled her to the ground. Just as the bloodied fangs were about to pierce her throat, the person on top of her was run through with a sword.
Warm blood splattered on her face, and her skin began to burn.
Two disciples came forward to carry away Rui Yun’s corpse. Li Zhao put away his sword and helped Xian Ning up.
“Rui Yun… what happened?” Xian Ning’s voice was strained.
Li Zhao looked at her with a complex expression. “She hasn’t been right since she woke up yesterday. Elder Jiang sent people to look after her, but who knew she would suddenly go mad this morning? She bit the person guarding her and then rushed out as if… as if she were looking for her own kind.”
She spoke carefully, but Xian Ning understood her meaning perfectly. She nodded in a daze and turned back into the house.
Li Zhao examined her closely, a slight frown on her face.
Xian Ning didn’t seem to have any demonic energy on her?
Just to be safe, she didn’t jump to conclusions. She said nothing and left.
Xian Ning sat for a while, a new determination setting in her heart.
She couldn’t stay here any longer. Otherwise, she would be the next one to die by her Senior Brother’s sword.
She had to leave now, before Qin Rong came back.
The barrier outside had already been broken by Rui Yun, so Xian Ning had no trouble leaving. She chose the smaller path again. This time, she didn’t run into anyone and left the main peak without a hitch.
It’s impossible to get the male and female leads together. Let’s give Qin Rong a great heroine storyline: after losing her loved one, she closes her heart, breaks through her restraints, and becomes an immortal.
System 033: …
Do you really think immortality is that easy? It’s not like eating or drinking. Cultivation requires opportunities. Without the opportunity to ascend, it doesn’t matter if you cultivate for a thousand or ten thousand years.
“Then there will be an opportunity. Otherwise, I’ll die right here in front of you.”
System 033: Threatening me is useless. I’m just a system. How could I possibly have that kind of power?
As Xian Ning was arguing with 033, she slowed her pace. This gave Qin Rong the chance to catch up to her.
A whoosh cut through the air. A cold, gleaming sword landed on the ground right in front of her. Qin Rong’s eyes were bloodshot as she walked toward Xian Ning.
“Running away again?”
Xian Ning knew she was in the wrong, so she didn’t argue. Instead, she said, “Rui Yun died in front of me. If I ever fall completely to the demonic path, I might die in front of you.”
Qin Rong’s voice suddenly rose, filled with emotion. “That’s impossible! I will never let that happen!”
Xian Ning looked at her unnaturally red eyes and remembered the nightmare that had terrified her, and the sight of Ruiyun dying. A look of finality crossed her tearful eyes.
Qin Rong seemed to sense her intention and began to run toward her. Xian Ning retreated, until she heard the sound of the wind rushing past her.
Qin Rong suddenly stopped running. She pleaded with bloodshot eyes, “Don’t do anything stupid, please…”
Xian Ning gave her a soft smile. “Qin Rong, do what you must. Don’t forget the oath you made when you first became my master’s disciple.”
With that, she turned and ran toward the cold, windswept cliff and jumped.
There was a crevice between the main peak of Jade Purity Mountain and the Cliff of Contemplation. It was several yards wide and its depth was unknown. No one had ever gone down there, because it was certain death.
A cold wind carried snowflakes that stung Xian Ning’s face. The frigid air was so cold that the blood from the small cuts didn’t even flow.
She slowly closed her eyes and communicated with the system in her mind.
“Remember to give Qin Rong the great heroine storyline.”
033 sounded furious: You’re insane!
It had thought Xian Ning’s threat was just an empty one. It hadn’t expected her to actually do it. This lunatic!
The feeling of falling became constant. Xian Ning slowly lost consciousness. In her daze, she thought that perhaps when she woke up again, her mission in this world would be complete.
For Qin Rong, becoming the most powerful cultivator in the sect was the most important thing. She would surely work toward that goal.
As for her, the path to immortality was long. Qin Rong would gradually forget about her, only remembering her occasionally in the many years to come. By then, her love would have faded.
This was a good ending. Xian Ning smiled in satisfaction, and her body was buried by the thick snow, becoming the only piece of color in a world of white.
