After Being Entangled By the Obsessive Heroine [Quick Wear] - Chapter 13
When Xian Ning got back, she took a shower, did a quick patch-up on her arm, and went to her room after telling her parents she wasn’t going to eat.
Her mother came out of the kitchen with a bowl of soup. She noticed the bad look on her face and kept quiet.
The couple exchanged a look, realizing something was wrong.
“I thought Xian Ning was looking much brighter recently. Why is she like this again?” her father asked.
The original owner wasn’t happy with her biological family and looked down on her parents. She only got close to them when she needed them to clean up her messes.
But Xian Ning was different. She had no memory when she woke up in this world and had been alone for many years. While she didn’t necessarily long for a family, she instinctively took on the role of their daughter.
She had been in this world for a month, but she spent most of her time at Lu Han’s place and didn’t have much contact with her parents. Still, she truly saw herself as their daughter.
Back then, the original owner had run away, and a girl’s body of a similar age was found in the river. Although Xian Ning’s parents held on to a glimmer of hope, they had given up long ago.
Then, one day, their daughter who had been missing for over a decade, just came back.
Naturally, they doted on her, wanting to give her the world.
Unfortunately, the original owner didn’t see them as her parents. She always believed she would become a wealthy heiress again, which was why she would constantly try to sabotage Xue Yingxian.
But she had forgotten one thing: the upper class valued bloodlines the most. Why would they give up on their biological daughter?
They were good to her because they had raised her for so many years and couldn’t bear to lose her, not because they wanted to fuel her fantasy.
Lu Han’s mother sat at the dining table and untied her apron. She was on the phone with Lu Han while telling her husband, “Xian Ning called me after school and said she was going to some banquet. You should call Xiaoxian and see if something happened.”
*******
Xian Ning was lying on her side on the bed. The skin showing from the edge of the bandage was already turning purple.
Tang Di’s condition was not something that had appeared overnight. It couldn’t be treated with human care and guidance alone; medical intervention was a must.
If she were the female lead in a cheesy romance novel, maybe she could win over the male lead with her goodness.
But she was neither the female lead nor a good person. If someone got in the way of her being a slacker, she would only want to smash them to death.
Tang Di was her biggest obstacle right now. She had to take action. Otherwise, not only would her mission never end, but his worsening condition would hurt others.
What if he suddenly decided to take everyone down with him? Wouldn’t that be a total disaster?
She heard some noise in the living room, probably guests. Just as Xian Ning was about to turn over, a knock came at the door.
“Xian Ning, are you asleep? It’s me, your sister.”
Xian Ning was about to say she was asleep, but Lu Han pushed the door open and came in.
Xian Ning: …
A little polite, but not much.
Xian Ning forgot about her injured arm and propped herself up with her hand, wincing in pain.
Lu Han immediately saw the bandage on her arm. She took two steps and lifted her sleeve. The bandage slid down a bit, revealing a large purple bruise.
“How did this happen?” Lu Han’s expression was very grim.
Xian Ning pulled her sleeve down. “I just bumped into something. It’s nothing.”
She didn’t want to cause more trouble.
It was well-known that the original owner had been obsessively chasing Tang Di. Now, being hurt like this, besides not wanting to worry her family, she also felt an indescribable sense of shame.
Lu Xian Ning, you’re so embarrassing!
Lu Han was angry and sad that Xian Ning didn’t trust her. She looked down as if she were about to cry.
Xian Ning was caught off guard. She quickly knelt on the bed, closer to Lu Han.
“Sister, don’t cry! I didn’t mean to not tell you.”
Lu Han looked at her, her dark pupils seemingly scanning her like some kind of instrument, leaving her with nowhere to hide.
Lu Han sighed and took Xian Ning’s hand. “Xian Ning, no matter what happens, your sister will always be on your side unconditionally. Will you tell me what happened?”
Xian Ning’s heart skipped a beat, and she lowered her head.
“Tang Di did it. He has some kind of mental illness. Sometimes he can’t control his actions.”
Lu Han suddenly remembered the last time, when Xian Ning’s neck was full of bruises. It seemed that was also Tang Di’s doing.
Two similar incidents in half a month was no longer “sometimes.”
Unlike her parents, Lu Han wasn’t completely clueless. In her line of work, she was exposed to all kinds of people and had heard rumors about Tang Di. She knew he wasn’t as gentle as he appeared.
“An adult who can’t even control his own emotions is too dangerous. Xian Ning, stay away from him from now on.”
This phrase was so frequent she probably heard it once every three days.
It’s not that I don’t want to stay away. The mission requires me to!
Xian Ning teared up, regretting her lack of skills.
If she had learned something useful when she was doing previous missions, she wouldn’t be so helpless now, having to rely on physical strength to deal with a person with a mental illness.
That’s how this world works. Smart people do mental work, but since her brain wasn’t up to it, her body had to suffer.
Lu Han saw that she wasn’t responding. Remembering how pathetic Xian Ning used to be, following Tang Di around, her eyes became dark and complex.
“Xian Ning, answer me!”
Xian Ning was startled. Lu Han had always been so gentle with her. This was the first time she had seen her so forceful.
“Okay. I’ll stay far away from him from now on.”
Lu Han’s expression softened, but she was still suspicious.
“Really?”
Xian Ning was found out. To not look guilty, she became defiant.
“See? I promised you, but you still don’t believe me. It’s no fun.”
She lay down, turning her back to Lu Han.
Lu Han quickly started to coddle her. “Okay, okay, it’s my fault. I’m sorry, okay?”
“It’s not that serious.” Xian Ning’s feistiness vanished.
Lu Han chuckled and pinched her cheek. “Then get up, you little troublemaker. Your arm needs to be properly bandaged.”
Xian Ning sat up and looked at her arm. In all the commotion, the bandage had come half off. The finger marks were clearly visible, with the most severe part in the middle, looking like a large bruise.
Lu Han’s eyes were filled with distress. Her hand hovered in the air less than a centimeter from Xian Ning’s arm. She was too scared to even touch her.
Seeing her caution, Xian Ning smiled. “It doesn’t hurt that much.”
Lu Han gently tapped her forehead. “This doesn’t hurt? So what does? Get up and get dressed. I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Xian Ning didn’t think it was necessary. If it were, she would have gone when Xue Yingxian suggested it, but Lu Han was insistent. To prevent her parents from finding out, she had no choice but to go with her.
The doctor in the emergency room did a quick check, gave her a bottle of bruise ointment, and said it was nothing serious.
Xian Ning looked at Lu Han. “See? I told you it was nothing.”
“You should listen to the doctor, not just make your own judgment,” Lu Han said.
She held the medicine in one hand and had her other hand lightly on Xian Ning’s waist. From behind, it looked like she was hugging her.
Xian Ning’s phone rang as they walked to the parking lot. When she saw the number, her heart skipped a beat for no reason.
It had no name, but she knew who it was.
After talking to her parents, a happy Xue Yingxian had dinner with them. Her mind was constantly on Xian Ning. The moment she got back to her room, she couldn’t wait to call her.
Xian Ning answered and asked what was wrong. Xue Yingxian replied, “Can’t I call you if there’s nothing wrong?”
Xian Ning stayed silent, so Xue Yingxian spoke again. “It’s a little noisy on your end. Are you outside?”
“Yeah, my sister brought me to the hospital.”
Lu Han had already pulled the car out and was waiting for her, signaling for her to get in.
Xue Yingxian was silent for a few seconds. “Why did you go with her and not me?”
What kind of weird competition is this? Xian Ning’s eyebrow twitched. She thought Xue Yingxian was being a bit childish.
Before she could answer, Xue Yingxian said, “I’m very hurt, so you have to go on a date with me tomorrow.”
“A… a date?!” Xian Ning choked on her spit.
“Yes! That’s right! A date! I’ll call you tomorrow!”
Xue Yingxian spoke quickly and hung up even faster, afraid Xian Ning would reject her on the spot.
For some reason, Xian Ning pictured Xue Yingxian saying all this with a blushing face and an arrogant expression, and her heart softened a little.
Even sitting in the car, a faint smile remained on Xian Ning’s face. Lu Han observed her subtly and asked casually, “Who was that?”
Xian Ning answered without thinking. “Xue Yingxian.”
Remembering their recent conflicts, she added, “She helped me today.”
“Oh, then we should thank her,” Lu Han said as she started the car. “Tomorrow’s my last day off. We can have her over for dinner to thank her in person.”
“Ah… but…” Xian Ning felt a little awkward.
Lu Han turned to look at her, asking gently, “Is that a problem?”
Xian Ning looked at her eyes and couldn’t bring herself to say no.
“No, that’s fine. It’s a plan.”
*******
Xue Yingxian hung up the phone and buried her face in a pillow, her cheeks and ears flushed.
Her heart was pounding with an uncontainable joy.
After a long time, she finally calmed down and started to worry about what to wear tomorrow.
She pulled out one formal suit after another. They all looked too mature. Would Xian Ning dislike them?
They had known each other for so long, but since she had consciously ignored Xian Ning before, she didn’t know what she liked to eat or what she liked to do for fun. Even picking a date location was a big problem.
Feeling helpless, Xue Yingxian sent a message to her sister.
Zhong Ning quickly replied, asking if she had finally won her over. Xue Yingxian’s ears turned red, and she told her to get serious.
The sisters talked back and forth for most of the night, coming up with a few backup plans.
In the end, Zhong Ning said, “Sis, don’t be so nervous. It’s a date, not an execution. If she likes you, she’ll call you romantic even if you just sit in a park all day.”
After ending the chat, Xue Yingxian hugged her phone, wondering how much Xian Ning really liked her.
******
Xue Yingxian woke up early the next day. After getting ready, she checked the time. Xian Ning should still be asleep. She waited and waited until around nine o’clock, then, unable to contain her excitement, drove straight to Xian Ning’s house.
As she got out of her car, she ran into Lu Han. She was carrying several plastic bags with things like soy milk and fried dough sticks.
“Miss Xue, you’re here so early? Xian Ning really is something. I said I’d treat you to a meal, and she’s already so excited.”
“She insisted on having breakfast from this place early in the morning. I just couldn’t say no.”
Lu Han finished, and her eyes held an unreadable emotion. “Miss Xue, would you like to join us?”
