- Chapter 14 - Little Cakes For An Apology
Huo Yinli’s words struck Zhao Chi’s heart heavily like a nail. The words between children were mostly jokes, yet Zhao Chi could sense that Huo Yinli was serious.
She was being hated.
“I hate her too.”
Wen Tingyin leaned closer into Feng Ye’s embrace, agreeing with Huo Yinli’s words: “Apologize to my younger sister first.”
The tip of Wen Ruanqing’s nose was all red from crying. Her younger sister had suffered such a grievance; she would not forgive Zhao Chi.
“Quickly, quickly apologize to them.”
Yi Hui gave Zhao Chi a push and offered a flattering smile: “Apologize quickly.”
“Mom.”
Zhao Chi looked up at Yi Hui, pouting her lips in grievance, but she still walked in front of Wen Ruanqing and bent her waist toward her: “I’m sorry, little sister. I scared you, I am really sorry.”
Held in Huo Yinli’s arms, Wen Ruanqing stared at Zhao Chi with her wide eyes. The tears hanging on her eyelashes trembled slightly. She sniffled and retreated a bit further into Huo Yinli’s embrace: “Mhm.”
Zhao Chi looked up at Wen Ruanqing. Seeing the distress and sadness filling her eyes while she held those two little cakes in her hands, her pale yellow dress made Wen Ruanqing look just like the little cakes in her arms… adorable. Even Zhao Chi felt a bit guilty.
“Wen Tingyin and Huo Yinli, I’m sorry. My attitude was bad, and I shouldn’t have torn your homework. Can you forgive me?”
Zhao Chi bit her lip, turning around to apologize to Huo Yinli and Wen Tingyin. She could not help but choke up right after finishing her words; her heart was filled with panic, yet she also felt incredibly aggrieved: “I really know I was wrong.”
“Hmph.”
Wen Tingyin imitated Zhao Chi’s arrogant manner, crossing her arms over her chest as she looked at her: “Barely forgiven, but don’t forget to compensate me for the cakes.”
“Me too.”
Huo Yinli was a child of few words. She nodded vigorously, agreeing with Wen Tingyin’s words completely.
“Let’s settle it this way then.”
Feng Ye carried Wen Ruanqing. Without sparing a single glance at the principal who had rushed over, he directly told Wen Tingyin and Huo Yinli to go home: “Let’s end this morning’s class here. Let’s go.”
Wen Tingyin and Huo Yinli obediently followed behind Feng Ye. Someone else would handle the remaining matters for them.
“President Feng!”
The principal was anxious to follow them out, but was directly blocked by the bodyguards: “Hello, a designated person will handle this matter in a moment…”
All the noise was left behind by the four of them. After climbing into the car, Wen Tingyin let out a heavy sigh. Hearing this, Huo Yinli looked at her with curiosity, but did not ask anything.
“Why the sorrowful expression?”
Feng Ye placed Wen Ruanqing into the baby seat and said humorously: “Is there something that hasn’t been resolved?”
Wen Tingyin shook her head. She turned her head to look at Wen Ruanqing, reaching out a hand to scratch Wen Ruanqing’s little face, her tone mature like a little adult: “I feel like I scared my sister.”
“Na!”
Upon feeling Wen Tingyin’s gaze, Wen Ruanqing immediately held out the cake in her arms. Her tiny hand poked at the packaging shell: “Broken.”
It was broken and no longer perfect; this was the first time she was giving a little gift to her two older sisters.
“It’s not broken, I like it.”
Wen Tingyin joyfully took the cake, the sorrow on her face sweeping away completely, replaced by a triumphant pride: “I think this cake looks super delicious.”
Wen Ruanqing’s eyes lit up upon hearing Wen Tingyin’s praise. She leaned back shyly, but the gaze she directed at Wen Tingyin was filled with a little excitement.
“Ahem.”
Huo Yinli leaned closer toward Wen Tingyin’s side and intentionally cleared her throat, rubbing her hands together with eyes full of anticipation. Where was her cake?
“Mhm!”
Wen Ruanqing leaned her body forward and handed the cake out. She smiled, revealing two tiny teeth, while a faint blush surfaced on her face.
Would Huo Yinli praise her too?
“So pretty.”
Huo Yinli took the cake out of the gift box, smiling as she tasted a bite: “Delicious.”
Wen Ruanqing let out an “ah” sound, then turned her head shyly and remained quiet.
“Sister is embarrassed.”
Feng Ye wiped the drool for Wen Ruanqing, looking tenderly at the three children: “Let’s eat at noon, I’ll have the kitchen prepare it. We won’t go to class this afternoon. What about Xiao Li?”
Both Huo Yinli and Wen Tingyin had classes in the afternoon, and Feng Ye wanted to respect Huo Yinli’s thoughts.
“I’m not going, I will talk to my mothers.”
Huo Yinli’s two mothers were actually very gentle. It was just that they spent too little time together, so people who were unaware of the situation mistakenly assumed her mothers were strict.
“All right then, you can start ordering.”
Feng Ye clapped his hands lightly: “Be quick.”
“I want to eat ribs, I want meat.”
“I’ll eat fish.”
“I…”
The two children discussed animatedly with one another, and Feng Ye nodded, agreeing to each request.
Meanwhile, Wen Ruanqing held her milk bottle to drink water. Listening to her older sisters’ discussion, that little bit of unhappiness in her heart also vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a dense sense of happiness.
“Sister, look at the leaf!”
After having lunch, they were ordered by Feng Ye to digest for a while before they could go to sleep. Wen Ruanqing sat in her baby stroller, watching Wen Tingyin brave the big sun to pick up a leaf and return.
“So green.”
Wen Tingyin smiled as she handed the leaf to Wen Ruanqing, but Huo Yinli, who was sitting aside reading a fairy tale book, spoke up just in time: “Wash hands.”
“Oh right, I’ll go wash my hands.”
Wen Tingyin bounced and skipped away to the bathroom to wash her hands.
The hand Wen Ruanqing had reached out silently retreated. The windows of the large house they lived in were massive, allowing her to clearly see the scenery outside. The temperature control inside the house was well done, and Wen Ruanqing liked sitting in her stroller while looking at the scenery outside.
Ding-dong.
The doorbell was rung. Huo Yinli looked up but made no reaction. Beside her, Feng Ye gestured for the servant to see who it was.
“Madam, it’s a little girl.”
The servant reported truthfully: “Should I open the door?”
Feng Ye let out an “oh” sound, knowing who it was: “Open the door.”
The main door opened in response. Zhao Chi stood at the doorway holding two pieces of cake, looking constrained at the people inside. Yi Hui had told her to apologize; she absolutely must not be made to leave Haishi.
“Auntie, Huo Yinli, and… little sister.”
Zhao Chi squeezed out a smile. She was young and faced this kind of situation very rarely, so she was exceptionally anxious at this moment: “I am compensating the cakes.”
Huo Yinli put down the fairy tale book and lay propped on the sofa staring at Zhao Chi, yet she did not speak.
On the contrary, Wen Tingyin, who had just come out of the bathroom, immediately said upon seeing Zhao Chi: “Compensating the cakes?”
“Here, a little leaf, it’s from the summer, the ones from autumn are all yellow.”
Wen Tingyin handed the clean-wiped leaf to Wen Ruanqing, not forgetting to urge her: “You can’t put it in your mouth.”
Wen Ruanqing, who originally wanted to take a bite, held herself back. She stared at the leaf for a few seconds, and in the next moment, she crumbled it directly: “Ha!”
“Little troublemaker.”
Although Wen Tingyin commented on Wen Ruanqing this way, her eyes were filled with indulgence. However, the moment she looked at Zhao Chi, she stopped smiling: “Put the cakes down.”
Zhao Chi opened her mouth, but she also knew she was hated. She discovered that Wen Tingyin’s house was much larger and much more beautiful than her own.
“Here.”
Zhao Chi handed the cakes to the servant and asked in a small voice: “Then can I stay in Haishi?”
No one paid attention to Zhao Chi.
She sniffled sorrowfully, then took out a small stuffed sheep toy from the small bag behind her. Zhao Chi pursed her lips, took a deep breath, and plucked up her courage to step inside. Walking in front of Wen Ruanqing, she stuffed the toy into Wen Ruanqing’s arms and said: “I’m sorry, I scared you before, this is for you.”
“Cute.”
After Zhao Chi finished speaking, she ran away, leaving only Wen Ruanqing holding the toy while staring blankly ahead.
“Ah.”
Wen Ruanqing let out a soft “ah” sound, then opened her mouth and bit down onto the sheep’s ear: “Nom.”
