- Chapter 40 - What Exactly Do I Feel for You?
Hateful, fearful, looked down upon. Also envious, and jealous.
Seeing her react this way, Yu Xian had no choice but to retract her business card.
Dammit, no one has ever rejected me before.
As expected of Zhu Lingyi’s woman.
Clearly, Yu Xian had misunderstood something. If Qin Shuyue knew what was going on in Yu Xian’s head, she might have fainted on the spot from pure anger.
While organizing her medical equipment nearby, Yu Xian said to Qin Shuyue, “I haven’t formally introduced myself. I am Yu Xian, President Zhu’s private doctor. I graduated from A-City Medical University through a continuous Bachelor-Master-Doctorate program. You can fully trust my medical skills.”
Once she finished packing, she slung the medical kit across her chest. She glanced up at the glucose bag, which was still more than half full, and then looked down at Qin Shuyue, who was leaning against the bed staring blankly at the ceiling. She explained, “I only take orders from President Zhu, so you don’t need to worry about the expenses.”
Qin Shuyue’s eyes finally flickered. Yu Xian winked at her. “All your treatment costs are being covered by President Zhu~ So, Miss Qin, you just need to rest well; there’s no need to worry about the money.”
She originally thought saying this would ease Qin Shuyue’s mind—at least relieving her of the burden of medical bills.
But Qin Shuyue suddenly sat up, her face tightening into a grim, serious expression as she demanded of Yu Xian, “Who did you say?”
Yu Xian froze for a moment, mentally replaying her words. Finding nothing amiss, she repeated herself. “Are you talking about President Zhu, Miss Qin? She will be covering your treatment costs.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Qin Shuyue violently reached out and ripped the IV needle from her arm. Yu Xian turned pale with shock and tried to stop her. “Miss Qin, please don’t get agitated! Your body is very weak; you need two more days of glucose, and after that.”
Before Yu Xian could finish, Qin Shuyue interrupted her. The needle dangled beside the IV stand, swaying back and forth, still stained with her blood.
Yu Xian’s gaze was fixed on the back of the hand where the IV had been. Because Qin Shuyue had ripped the needle out with such force, blood had spurted from the vein, and the puncture site was now oozing continuously.
Yu Xian had no idea which sentence of hers had provoked Qin Shuyue, but the priority now was to calm the patient down to prevent a larger disaster.
Yet, Qin Shuyue seemed not to notice the blood blooming on the back of her hand.
She stumbled out of bed, not even putting on shoes, and staggered toward the direction of Zhu Lingyi’s study.
Behind her, Yu Xian was on the verge of a breakdown.
What on earth is going on between Miss Qin and President Zhu?! If she barges into the study while Zhu Lingyi is working, my career is over!
At that thought, Yu Xian rushed forward without thinking to block Qin Shuyue.
Looking at the blood dripping from Qin Shuyue’s hand, Yu Xian prayed to every deity she knew. She frantically reopened her medical kit to find a dry cotton ball, but in the blink of an eye, Qin Shuyue had already reached the study door.
With a loud thud, Qin Shuyue pushed the door open. The voices inside ceased instantly. The assistant and Zhu Lingyi both turned their eyes toward her.
The assistant’s heart leaped into her throat. She instinctively glanced at Zhu Lingyi’s expression, then flew to the doorway like a bolt of lightning to block Qin Shuyue’s path.
“Miss Qin, you cannot enter the study without President Zhu’s permission.”
The assistant looked at Yu Xian, who was trailing behind, and gave her a sharp look.
Yu Xian hurried over, trembling, and pressed the cotton ball she was holding onto Qin Shuyue’s bleeding wound.
But Qin Shuyue shoved both Yu Xian and the assistant aside, her face deathly pale as she walked toward the table where Zhu Lingyi was holding her meeting.
“Miss Qin! Miss Qin, you can’t go in!”
Seeing that Qin Shuyue was determined and unable to be held back, the assistant quickly pressed a button on the wall. A moment later, servants from the first floor swarmed out.
Zhu Lingyi looked up and gave the servants a single look.
The servants glanced at each other and stopped in their tracks. They slowly backed out and thoughtfully closed the door.
“Pause the agenda and the reports. I have something to handle here.”
Zhu Lingyi pressed the F6 key on her keyboard and looked up calmly at Qin Shuyue.
“Instead of lying in bed recovering, what kind of mess are you making here?”
“Why.”
Qin Shuyue opened her parched, cracked lips. Her eyes were locked onto this woman who remained composed no matter what happened.
For a brief moment, a hint of a question appeared on that usually unflappable face.
“Why what? If there is nothing else, get out.”
“Why!” Qin Shuyue seemed to explode. She slammed both hands onto Zhu Lingyi’s desk.
Zhu Lingyi frowned slightly.
She looked at Qin Shuyue’s indignant face, then lowered her gaze to the hands slammed on her desk.
One of them was still bleeding profusely.
Her slight frown twitched; her indifferent expression finally gained a flicker of warmth.
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
Qin Shuyue’s eyes suddenly turned red, but the tears pooled and swirled without falling.
“Do you think you’re so great? So noble? Am I supposed to thank you for leaving me dinner? Be grateful that you’re paying my medical bills? Am I supposed to be thankful for everything you do to me?!”
Zhu Lingyi truly did not understand the source of this outburst.
She watched Qin Shuyue’s near-collapse with a steady gaze. “Qin Shuyue, what is it that you want to say?”
“Why do you… torture me, and then save me?”
Why did Zhu Lingyi post those videos, forcing her to face a storm of public opinion? Why did she watch her be pushed into the abyss step by step while remaining detached and superior, as if none of it concerned her?
Why torture her like this? Why!
Qin Shuyue understood she was naturally unlikable. She was meant to be hated, detested, and toyed with. She could accept that.
But just as she was coming to terms with the fact that Zhu Lingyi hated her—just as she was planning how to live cautiously, walking on thin ice to avoid upsetting her further.
Why did she order the maid to give her special care?
Lavish meals, nutritional plans, orders to eat every bite.
And then, catching her when she fainted, arranging for a doctor, and thoughtfully covering the expenses?
What was this? What did it mean?!
Qin Shuyue’s mind was truly at a breaking point!
What was Zhu Lingyi playing at?
What did she want from her? Why was she treating her this way?
Qin Shuyue was in a state of chaos. Her heart was tangled like a mess of yarn; she couldn’t understand Zhu Lingyi’s motive. She had nothing left was there still something about her that Zhu Lingyi wanted to take away?
She no longer understood her own heart. She had no idea what she felt for Zhu Lingyi anymore.
Hate.
She thought so. She must utterly hate this kind of cold blooded superior someone who, by virtue of her noble birth, looked down on everyone, owned the world, yet viewed life and death with such indifference.
But beyond the hate, there was a fog.
Fear.
Zhu Lingyi was like a king whose single word could decide a person’s fate. So, Qin Shuyue constantly kept her distance, terrified that getting too close would burn her or bring misfortune.
What else?
Qin Shuyue stared intently at Zhu Lingyi’s indifferent face. That blank expression sparked an uncontrollable rage deep within her.
That face was perfect, beyond reproach, yet Qin Shuyue saw only something to loathe.
She wanted so badly to tear off Zhu Lingyi’s calm, thin mask to see what was underneath. She wanted to drag her down from her high throne and make her experience the living hell that she herself had endured.
She wanted to see if the woman could remain so cold and elegant then.
The more she looked at Zhu Lingyi’s disregard and nonchalance, the deeper her inner struggle and fear became.
No!
When did her heart become so filthy and evil?
These were two fundamentally different lives. Qin Shuyue should have recognized that.
And yet, she was still envious.
Envious to the point that it turned into jealousy.
Qin Shuyue had always looked down on people like Zhu Lingyi those who used their family status to do as they pleased, playing with lives and causing endless pain.
But for every ounce of hate she felt, the envy grew, and the jealousy rose.
Gradually, these twisted, ugly feelings were consuming her original, pure nature, painting her blank heart black until she became unrecognizable to herself.
What right did she have to question Zhu Lingyi? And what answer would Zhu Lingyi even give?
Was she being malicious while not having completely lost her conscience? Was she offering these small kindnesses because she felt some modicum of guilt?
Her kindness was charity.
It was the noble act of lifting a hand to provide a sliver of oxygen only when she saw someone about to suffocate in a vacuum.
A wave of tragedy washed over Qin Shuyue’s heart.
Had she really reached the point where she could only survive through the charity and pity of others?
But once… once she had a happy family! She had a mother and father who loved her, family members who would give everything to provide her with the best!
Why…Why did it turn out like this?
How did she become the person she was now?
At that moment, Zhu Lingyi watched her calmly, her eyes devoid of emotion. She simply reached out her right hand and gently pressed the cotton ball against the back of Qin Shuyue’s hand.
The blood had begun to clot, but new blood continued to seep out. Qin Shuyue felt a profound exhaustion. Her lips grew even paler.
Her vision began to blur, yet she remained fixed on Zhu Lingyi’s cold, detached, and hauntingly beautiful face.
Then, she heard the words that would be engraved in her memory for the rest of her life.
“Qin Shuyue, what I give you is no different from charity given to a pitiful stray cat on the street. You should always remember your benefactor and remain grateful. You should not be coming to your benefactor to scream about your grievances like this.”
The moment the words were spoken, a figure blurred before Zhu Lingyi’s eyes. With a heavy thud, Qin Shuyue collapsed onto the floor.
Zhu Lingyi slammed her hands onto the desk and stood up abruptly, looking down at the fallen woman, her fingers trembling slightly.
