- Chapter 39 - The Scent She Hates
It was the scent of jasmine she despised.
Qin Shuyue did not know how long she had been in a lethargic sleep.
She felt her body sinking, down and down as if beneath her lay an endless black hole.
A heavy bog swathed her, and a thousand pounds of concrete seemed to press against her neck. She raised her hand helplessly, yet she could not escape the suffocation.
Darkness gradually swallowed her whole. The light atop the cliff drifted further and further away. She reached out; the light was within reach, yet she could never touch it.
A scorching tear fell from the corner of her eye, and her body continued its unstoppable descent.
She raised her hand, murmuring soundlessly, surrounded by a deathly silence.
Suddenly, a strand of red silk fell from the cliff high above. That sole flash of brilliance in the darkness wound tightly around Qin Shuyue’s wrist.
Her body was jerked violently by the red silk, and her descent halted abruptly.
In her blurred consciousness, Qin Shuyue seemed to see the person who had held her that day.
Who was it?
Was it Mother?
The red silk wrapped tenderly around her body, slowly pulling her up toward the cliff.
The darkness beneath her transformed at some unknown moment into the refreshing scent of grass, and the fragrance of flowers lingered at the tip of her nose.
It was the scent of jasmine she despised.
Perhaps sensing she was out of danger, the red silk gradually withdrew from her body.
However, Qin Shuyue scrambled up from the ground in an abnormal state of tension, stumbling and sprinting as she chased after the red silk that was drifting further away.
The darkness behind her seemed to pursue them with all its might, attempting to swallow them whole.
“Don’t… No!”
Qin Shuyue snapped her eyes open, her entire body bolting upright from the bed. Her eyes were wide, and she gasped for breath, looking around in a panic, only to suddenly collide with a pair of eyes like ice and snow.
The clear fragrance of jasmine seemed to peel away from the dream and penetrate reality.
For a moment, Qin Shuyue’s eyes were dazed, unable to distinguish whether she was in a dream or in the real world.
But when she crashed into Zhu Lingyi’s indifferent and detached gaze, the dream abruptly shattered.
Qin Shuyue was still shaken. The heart thumping wildly in her chest skipped a beat the moment she saw Zhu Lingyi sitting composedly by her bedside. Her breath hitched, and her fragmented thoughts gradually pulled together.
Her hurried breathing slowly returned to its normal rhythm. She looked around dazed, her gaze lowering bit by bit.
On the hand connected to the IV drip, Zhu Lingyi was tightly gripping her wrist.
Zhu Lingyi’s brow was furrowed, yet no specific emotion could be discerned within it.
Impatience, anger, annoyance—none of them were there.
Yet, the moment Qin Shuyue looked at her, her expression reverted to its usual coldness, and her furrowed brow slowly smoothed out.
Zhu Lingyi released her grip on Qin Shuyue’s wrist and stood up from the bedside. With her eyes slightly cast down, she explained coldly, “If you could be a bit more peaceful while sleeping, I wouldn’t have to hold your wrist.”
Qin Shuyue lowered her gaze and said with a hint of apology, “I am truly sorry. I will change in the future.”
Zhu Lingyi raised an eyebrow. “Change?”
Was a subconscious behavior like sleeping something that could be changed just because one wanted to?
However, she was in no mood to argue over such trivial details.
Clearly, she had been handling company affairs just moments ago, yet her thoughts had drifted uncontrollably toward Qin Shuyue’s weak, pale face as she lay on the bed.
She even found this feeling emerging from her heart to be very strange.
But she was unwilling to delve deeper into those thoughts.
Seeing that Qin Shuyue was awake, Zhu Lingyi no longer had a reason to stay by her side.
But the moment she turned and stepped away, a voice, as faint as a mosquito yet crisp and pleasant, suddenly came from behind her.
“Thank you.”
Zhu Lingyi’s eyelids flickered imperceptibly; then, she quickened her pace and left the room.
At that moment, Yu Xian walked to the door, happening to come face-to-face with Zhu Lingyi as she exited.
She lowered her head awkwardly.
Although Zhu Lingyi hadn’t said anything about the incident a few days ago and had even had the maid relay instructions allowing her to stay here temporarily while reimbursing her travel expenses it was still Yu Xian sighed.
She could only keep brainwashing herself: Rich people live complicated lives; that day was just a small scene.
“Qin Shuyue is awake. Go see if there are any other problems. Although university coursework isn’t that stressful, doesn’t she need her scholarship? Missing too many classes will affect her evaluation. If there are no major issues, let her go to class.”
Zhu Lingyi casually tucked her hands into her pockets, her demeanor as usual. “You go tell her.”
Before Yu Xian could react, Zhu Lingyi had already turned and entered the study.
She carried her medical kit into the room.
Walking to Qin Shuyue’s side, she asked as a matter of routine, “Miss Qin, are there any other places where you feel uncomfortable?”
Facing a stranger she had never met, Qin Shuyue’s fingers could not help but curl, gripping the sheets beneath her tightly.
But upon seeing the newcomer’s attire a snow white coat, a gentle smile on her face, and eyes filled with concern for the patient she seemed a very gentle “older sister” figure, if one ignored the syringe in her hand that was nearly as thick as her forearm.
Yu Xian noticed her gaze. She lightly shook the syringe and comforted her with a smile, “It’s alright, it only looks scary. Actually, it doesn’t hurt.”
She was quite proud of her medical skills.
There had never been a patient who cried from pain under her touch.
“Be good, stretch out your hand.”
She squinted with a smile, her thumb pressing against the plunger. The needle stood high before her eyes, seemingly flashing with a glint of cold light.
Was this what it meant to use the gentlest tone to say the harshest words?
Qin Shuyue hesitantly extended her arm.
With one hand on a drip and the other having blood drawn, her lips pale and her eyes lifeless, she looked every bit the patient who didn’t have much time left.
After the blood was drawn, because Qin Shuyue’s other hand was occupied by the IV, Yu Xian steadily set the blood sample aside with one hand while thoughtfully pressing a cotton ball onto the girl’s arm with the other.
After about three minutes, Yu Xian gently lifted the cotton ball to check. Ensuring the bleeding had stopped, she placed the cotton ball into a waste bag and tucked it into a compartment of her medical kit.
“I will send your blood for testing. President Zhu will receive the lab report within thirty minutes.”
As Yu Xian spoke, she began packing her instruments, taking a moment to look up at the IV bag hanging on the stand by the bed.
Qin Shuyue’s face bore no expression, nor did she speak; she merely nodded faintly.
From the moment Yu Xian entered until now, the small person on the bed had been leaning against the headboard with her eyes downcast, occasionally looking up to see how much was left in the IV bag.
She hadn’t said a single word, and her reactions were even somewhat sluggish.
By all appearances, she was a very soft-natured, introverted young girl.
Yu Xian’s thoughts couldn’t help but drift back to the scene a few days ago when Qin Shuyue had clung to Zhu Lingyi’s hand, begging her not to go. Perhaps it was out of curiosity, or perhaps because it was simply unbelievable.
Since she started following Zhu Lingyi, she had never seen Zhu Lingyi soften her heart for anyone?
Perhaps that was how it could be described.
In Yu Xian’s eyes, Zhu Lingyi was the type of cold blooded creature who wouldn’t even dial 120 (emergency services) if she saw someone on the side of the road bleeding out from a car accident.
She had never seen her take the initiative to get involved in someone else’s business, let alone bombard her with phone calls in the middle of the night, demanding she rush from the north of the city to the center within five minutes.
She had been so anxious she hadn’t even changed her clothes; she just grabbed her glasses and medical kit, ran downstairs like the wind to hail a taxi, and flew to Room 601.
That night was absurd, yet exceptionally real.
It made her involuntarily curious about the gaunt girl before her.
What kind of person could make a figure who was normally so composed, steady as a rock, and powerful in the corporate world become so flustered and unsettled?
She saw it.
A woman lying weakly on a bed, nearly devoid of life.
Yu Xian had originally thought this woman must not only have “methods” but also a calculating mind. Otherwise, how could she make such a steady person so fearful?
But the values measured on the glucose monitor nearly overturned all those speculations.
A girl with severe hypoglycemia, so weak she fainted, was completely at odds with words like “methods,” “calculating,” or “scheming.”
She had originally thought the girl was just being dramatic.
In the years she had spent by Zhu Lingyi’s side, she was used to seeing people, enterprises, and companies vanish after offending Zhu Lingyi.
But Qin Shuyue was an exception.
This exception was peculiar and unexpected.
But it existed tangibly, right before her eyes.
It caused her to have questions about the girl in front of her.
But this was not her job; she shouldn’t know things she wasn’t supposed to ask.
She took a breath, exhaled softly, and slung the medical kit over her shoulder.
However, she knew one thing.
Qin Shuyue’s health was terrible.
What she could ascertain were the ailments beyond her mental state.
Qin Shuyue was malnourished; her physical constitution was far inferior to her peers, and she was at risk of fainting on the street at any time. Yet, she had somehow endured until now it was a miracle.
“Miss Qin.” She composed herself and handed over a business card, advising her, “President Zhu is very busy with work and her own studies. She might not always notice your physical condition. If you feel any other discomfort, you can call me anytime…”
“No need.” Qin Shuyue shook her head.
She didn’t look up at Yu Xian; she merely swept a glance at the card Yu Xian was offering and then refused her.
Yu Xian paused.
Hey, hey, hey, she couldn’t be looking down on me, right?
She was a PhD graduate from a prestigious medical university in A-City, someone who had worked with her mentor to overcome national medical puzzles and possessed top-tier medical technology was she actually being rejected by a slip of a girl?
She suppressed the veins throbbing on her forehead.
This is the boss’s guest.
Endure it.
She took a breath and explained to Qin Shuyue in a good-natured tone, trying to prove she possessed top-tier medical skills. But to her surprise, Qin Shuyue didn’t look down on her skills.
Rather…
“I have no money.”
Yu Xian nearly stumbled on level ground. She even wondered if her ears were playing tricks on her.
She froze for a moment. Seemingly wanting to confirm if she had misheard, Yu Xian pushed up her glasses with a complex expression.
“That excuse me. I didn’t hear you clearly just now. Could you say that again?”
Qin Shuyue’s left hand clenched tightly, her brow furrowing, and a look of embarrassment appeared in her eyes, causing a flush to rise on her face.
She parted her lips slightly. “Dr. Yu, my health is very good. Please do not worry.”
