After Becoming a Scummy Alpha, I Met the Reborn Omega - Chapter 39
Lin Xiaoyou was still at home taking care of Gu Ximeng, just as she always did. Since the last variety show had aired, the online response had been overwhelmingly positive. Many investors were eager to join, and Gu Ximeng was already planning the next round of filming.
The Lin family’s door had not been knocked on for a long time.
Suddenly, a crack of thunder startled Lin Xiaoyou, making her glance toward the window. She walked over to look outside — the rain had started pouring down without any warning.
A gust of wind carrying the scent of wet soil drifted in. Lin Xiaoyou quickly shut the window and drew the curtains as well.
Gu Ximeng continued typing on her keyboard when the phone rang. Lately, a lot of people had been calling Gu Ximeng, so much so that she had grown a little reluctant to answer. Glancing at the caller ID and seeing it wasn’t an investor but her aunt, Gu Ruoyun, she decided this was a call she had to take.
“Hello? Auntie, what’s the matter?”
In truth, Gu Ximeng didn’t know much about this aunt of hers. She only knew that Gu Ruoyun had once been quite famous, but after getting married and moving abroad, she had largely disappeared from the family’s radar.
Moreover, Gu Ximeng’s relationship with the Gu family wasn’t great — she was deemed worthless due to her disability. As a result, she hadn’t interacted much with this so-called aunt over the years.
“Xiao Xi, I just wanted to ask when the next recording session will be,” Gu Ruoyun said gently, her voice soft and warm. But Gu Ximeng knew her aunt well enough to realize she was a strong-willed woman. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have made such a firm decision to divorce.
“It was supposed to be soon, but lately President Mo and President Hua have been working together, so we’re thinking of postponing the recording for a while.”
Hua Miaomiao had indeed found a project to collaborate on with Mo Zhaoyan and had specifically requested that Tang Ying handle the various cooperation details.
Finding the collaboration promising, Mo Zhaoyan temporarily assigned Tang Ying to assist.
Tang Ying had agreed without protest, donning a self-sacrificing look for the greater good.
“Then… will Bai Qin still be participating?” Gu Ximeng detected a hint of cautiousness in her aunt’s tone.
Gu Ximeng’s impression of Bai Qin was that she had been placed into the show by President Hua. However, after filming began, she realized that her aunt and Bai Qin seemed to know each other from before. Still, Bai Qin was Hua’s person — was her aunt getting herself entangled again?
She had just finalized her divorce; Gu Ximeng couldn’t help feeling worried.
“I’ve contacted her — she’s still participating.”
On the other end of the call, it sounded as though Gu Ruoyun let out a small sigh of relief.
Bai Qin had been ignoring Gu Ruoyun, caught up in her own emotions. Knowing that Bai Qin would still be on the show gave Gu Ruoyun a sliver of comfort — after all, it would give her a chance to see her again.
“Do you know where she lives?”
“I do,” Gu Ximeng replied, “but Auntie, I should remind you: Bai Qin was placed by President Hua… and you know President Hua’s reputation. She has quite a few ‘bosom friends’…”
Gu Ximeng didn’t dare directly say that Hua Miaomiao had many lovers. She could only hint at it, fearing that her newly divorced aunt might fall into another pit.
As expected, Gu Ruoyun paused, falling silent for a moment before finally saying,
“I know. I just want to see how she’s doing. If she really has found someone new, I wouldn’t stoop so low as to become a third party.”
Listening to her voice tinged with resignation, Gu Ximeng didn’t press further. After a few more casual remarks, they ended the call.
Gu Ximeng let out a long sigh.
“Ah, what is love, that it drives people to live and die for it…” she mused aloud.
Turning her head, she caught sight of Lin Xiaoyou watching her with a light smile. Lin Xiaoyou walked over and playfully patted Gu Ximeng’s head.
“Ow!” Gu Ximeng yelped.
Even though she knew she hadn’t used any real strength and that the other was just making a fuss, Lin Xiaoyou still gently rubbed Gu Ximeng’s head.
“You’re so dramatic, Director Gu.”
Gu Ximeng chuckled mischievously, grabbed Lin Xiaoyou by the hand, and pulled her into her arms. Lin Xiaoyou’s body softened as she sat down on Gu Ximeng’s lap, looping her arms naturally around Gu Ximeng’s neck.
Just as the two were about to get a little intimate, an ill-timed knock came from the door.
Gu Ximeng hadn’t even managed to steal a kiss yet. Just as she was about to lean closer, the knocking came again.
She was about to say, “Ignore it,” when suddenly her arms were empty — the warm, soft jade-like figure had vanished.
Ignoring Gu Ximeng’s aggrieved expression, Lin Xiaoyou quickly went to open the door.
When she opened it, she was surprised to find Lin Changsheng standing outside.
Lin Changsheng was drenched from head to toe. Water dripped from her hair, and her face was streaked with rain.
Lin Xiaoyou gasped in shock, mixed with confusion.
“Changsheng?”
Lin Changsheng’s face was expressionless. Though it was summer, being soaked to the bone still left her shivering slightly.
“Ah Jie,” she called softly.
Hearing the familiar term — “big sister” — Lin Xiaoyou froze. She looked Lin Changsheng up and down carefully.
Had she… regained her memories?
“Come inside quickly! Why didn’t you bring an umbrella? You’re completely soaked!”
Lin Changsheng had hesitated downstairs for a long time about whether to come up.
At first, it hadn’t been raining, but then a torrential downpour had suddenly started. Even so, Lin Changsheng stood in the rain for a while before finally deciding to come upstairs.
Lin Xiaoyou hurriedly welcomed her in and rushed to the bathroom to fetch a towel. She began gently drying Lin Changsheng’s hair.
“What happened? Did you have a fight with Mo Zhaoyan?”
That was the only explanation Lin Xiaoyou could think of. After all, she had sensed a distinct gloominess about Lin Changsheng during this visit.
“I remembered about Mom and Dad,” Lin Changsheng said quietly.
Lin Xiaoyou’s hands froze mid-motion. She thought back to the Lin Changsheng who had blamed herself relentlessly — it seemed that ever since then, Lin Changsheng had never been as proud as she once was.
Hearing the movement, Gu Ximeng stepped out of her room to check what was happening. Seeing the two sisters talking seriously, she sensibly withdrew without disturbing them.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Lin Xiaoyou said softly.
Although, in the beginning, she had indeed blamed Lin Changsheng, after seeing her sister shut herself away, falling deeper into despair, Lin Xiaoyou no longer had the heart to blame her.
Back then, Lin Changsheng had locked herself in her room, refusing to eat or drink.
Eventually, Lin Xiaoyou couldn’t stand it anymore. She barged into Lin Changsheng’s room, pulled the blackout curtains open, and dragged Lin Changsheng out of bed.
“Get up! Eat, wash up, go to work! Are you planning to waste away like this?
Mom and Dad are already gone — how much longer are you going to wallow in despair?”
Lin Xiaoyou hated remembering that period.
Although Lin Changsheng eventually pulled herself together, the cheerful smile she once wore never returned.
She had expected she might need to coax her sister again, but unexpectedly, Lin Changsheng didn’t show any signs of self-pity.
“Ah Jie, I just want to know the full truth about what happened back then,” Lin Changsheng said calmly, as if she were simply seeking answers.
Lin Xiaoyou knew she probably shouldn’t tell her everything, but facing the determined Lin Changsheng, she slowly began to recount the events.
“Honestly, I don’t know everything myself.
At the time, Mom and Dad were in a car accident.
There was bad signal reception, so it wasn’t until the next day that I was contacted.
By the time I arrived at the hospital, they were already undergoing emergency treatment.
Later, their car reportedly exploded again in a secondary blast and was completely destroyed.
Not long after, Mom and Dad passed away.”
As she spoke, Lin Xiaoyou kept a close eye on Lin Changsheng’s expression.
Thankfully, Lin Changsheng remained deep in thought, her emotions relatively steady.
“Who reported the accident back then? Who handled it?” Lin Changsheng asked.
“It’s strange,” Lin Xiaoyou replied. “After the crash, Mom and Dad were quickly sent to the hospital. The traffic police took over the accident scene, and then — the explosion happened. Everyone at the scene was caught in it and died.”
“Later, the police investigated, but they couldn’t find anything useful. The evidence had all been blown to ashes.”
“Were there any marks on Mom and Dad’s bodies? For example… knife wounds?”
Lin Xiaoyou froze, surprised by the question.
She thought hard but didn’t recall anything about knife wounds.
“The doctors never mentioned anything like that,” she said.
“After the emergency treatment began, it wasn’t long before they were pronounced dead.
At the time, I was overwhelmed with grief… I didn’t notice much else.”
Lin Changsheng had her doubts.
She had a memory — a fleeting, painful vision of someone wearing a ghost mask killing her parents.
But whenever she tried to recall that scene clearly, her head would pound violently, and the images would blur.
It seemed her body instinctively resisted remembering.
Suddenly, Lin Xiaoyou seemed to recall something.
“The case was eventually closed without a result, but… I do remember the name of the police officer who investigated — Chen Lin.
Isn’t she the one who…”
Lin Xiaoyou abruptly cut herself off, realizing she was saying too much.
Lin Changsheng calmly finished her sentence for her.
“She’s the officer who interrogated me.”
Lin Xiaoyou didn’t know how much Lin Changsheng had remembered.
But seeing her calm demeanor now, she couldn’t help but feel a little worried.
“Changsheng, all of that is in the past now.”
“I know. It’s already over. I just want the truth, that’s all.
Don’t worry, Ah Jie. I won’t turn into who I used to be.”
Lin Changsheng recalled that private meeting between Chen Lin and Mo Zhaoyan.
Clearly, Mo Zhaoyan knew more than she had let on — they were all hiding something from her.
It seemed necessary to find Chen Lin.
Thinking of this, Lin Changsheng remembered Bai Qin.
If she wanted to contact Chen Lin, Bai Qin was definitely the best way in.
“I won’t bother you anymore, Ah Jie,” Lin Changsheng said.
She casually handed the towel back to Lin Xiaoyou, who took it, her face filled with concern.
She worried Lin Changsheng might act impulsively.
“It’s still raining outside. Why don’t you stay here for the night?”
But Lin Changsheng simply waved her hand and declined.
“I have to go home. Mo Zhaoyan will be worried.
Don’t worry, Ah Jie. I won’t act rashly.”
She was so calm — almost too calm.
It was clear she had truly changed.
Only after sending Lin Changsheng off did Lin Xiaoyou finally sit back down on the sofa, still feeling anxious.
She called Mo Zhaoyan.
“What is it?”
Mo Zhaoyan’s voice was, as always, composed and cool.
It helped Lin Xiaoyou calm down too — after all, it seemed there was nothing Mo Zhaoyan couldn’t handle.
With her around, everything would eventually be okay.
“Changsheng remembered,” Lin Xiaoyou said.
“I don’t know exactly how much she remembered, but when I mentioned Chen Lin, she seemed very interested. She might go looking for her.”
On the other end, Mo Zhaoyan paused her work and frowned slightly.
“I understand.”
After hanging up, Mo Zhaoyan sighed quietly, hesitating for a moment about whether she should call Chen Lin.
In the end, she decided not to.
After ending her call with Mo Zhaoyan, Lin Xiaoyou finally felt a little more at ease.
Having Mo Zhaoyan by Changsheng’s side gave her peace of mind.
Changsheng had only just come back — she couldn’t afford to lose her again.
Meanwhile, after Lin Changsheng left, Gu Ximeng came out of the room.
Noticing the worried look on her wife’s face and seeing her making a phone call to Mo Zhaoyan, she waited quietly until the call ended before sneaking over.
Lin Xiaoyou saw her, and without hesitation, hugged her tightly, rubbing her cheek affectionately against Gu Ximeng’s neck.
“It’s going to be okay…” Gu Ximeng whispered softly.
