- Chapter 24 - The Choice: Between Him and Me, Who Do You Want to Stay?
When Wen Leling was wheeled out of the operating room, the anesthesia had not fully worn off. His eyelids felt as heavy as lead, drooping so low that only a sliver of vision remained. His pupils had rolled upward, revealing only the whites of his eyes; it seemed that even the slightest effort to open them would exhaust what little strength he had left.
“Nurse, is he alright?” As the operating room doors slid open, Min Chi rushed forward, gripping the edge of the hospital bed and asking the nurse anxiously.
“It is nothing serious, just a minor bone fracture.”
“A fracture?” Song He followed closely behind, waiting for the nurse’s response. As soon as she finished speaking, he was filled with suspicion. He suppressed the urge to grab Min Chi by the neck and force the truth out of him, demanding instead: “You said he fell on the bed. How do you get a fracture from falling on a bed?”
“Explain yourself! What exactly happened?”
If I had known, I would have asked the neighbor to drive.
Min Chi rolled his eyes toward the ceiling. “There were only the two of us in the bedroom at the time. His injury is a matter between us. Why is an outsider like you interfering?”
“Are you trying to settle this privately?”
“It is none of your business, outsider.” Min Chi loathed the inexplicable feeling Song He’s tone gave him, putting heavy emphasis on the word “outsider.”
The air along the corridor felt as though it were simmering under a layer of raging fire. The nurse’s breathing turned shallow, worried that the two might come to blows; her face was a mask of helplessness.
This continued until they pushed Wen Leling into the elevator.
The elevator doors closed. The cramped space was stuffy and noisy, causing Wen Leling to groan in discomfort subconsciously. Seeing a lifeline, the nurse immediately seized the opportunity: “Gentlemen,” she paused and forced a professional smile, “Sirs.”
“Let us refrain from arguing for now, or perhaps, give the patient some space?”
“Even though the patient injured his leg, he still needs plenty of rest.”
The two finally seemed to realize their impropriety and shut their mouths simultaneously. Min Chi even made a gesture of zipping his lips, though he only agreed to the ceasefire after shooting Song He a final glare.
It was utterly childish, and this childishness persisted until Wen Leling woke up.
During that time, Min Chi wracked his brain several times trying to find a way to kick Song He out, but after trying various methods to no avail, he eventually gave up.
Consequently, both he and Song He began vying for the unconscious Wen Leling’s favor, completely forgetting the nurse’s instructions. One moment they were rubbing his legs, the next his arms; they took turns telling bedtime stories and singing, essentially making so much noise that they roused Wen Leling from his sleep.
After an internal struggle between waking up and staying asleep, Wen Leling finally opened his eyes when he heard the chattering replaced by a serious male voice.
He saw Min Chi and Song He standing at the head of the bed like students caught cheating on a dictation test. Among the doctor and nurses surrounding the bed, the doctor played the role of the teacher while the nurses were the other students. For every word the “teacher” said, the two men scribbled furiously.
“The patient or family members must not adjust or remove the cast on their own. Keep the cast dry. When bathing, you can use plastic bags or cling wrap to seal the cast area tightly to ensure no water gets in. If water accidentally enters, use a dry towel to blot the surface moisture immediately and contact the doctor for an inspection.”
“Do not allow the cast to bear weight, be squeezed, or sustain impacts to prevent deformation or breakage. Keep the interior of the cast clean; do not insert anything into it. If the patient feels an itch, and it is significant, you may gently pat the surface of the cast for relief. Do not reach inside the cast to scratch.”
“The family must also monitor the patient’s condition closely. Seek medical attention immediately if any of the following occur: toes turning purple, blue, or white; persistent numbness, tingling, coldness, or tightness in the limb; severe swelling that prevents movement of the extremities; or if there is redness, pus, or a foul odor at the edges, which could indicate a skin infection.”
“Follow-up appointment in one to two weeks.”
The ward was so quiet that one could hear the rustle of pen nibs moving across paper.
The doctor looked at the two companions. One was writing unhurriedly, finishing up his notes, while the other was scribbling haphazardly as if drawing characters based on memory.
Reluctant to disturb them but pressured by his workload, the doctor finally spoke: “Do the family members have any more questions? If not, I will continue my rounds.”
“Alright, please go ahead. Thank you for your hard work.”
Song He watched the doctor leave with a smile. He had finished his notes, which were neat and organized. Looking at Min Chi, the man was the literal definition of a bad example.
Min Chi had wanted to stop the doctor, but half his mind was focused on “drawing” his notes, so he forgot to speak. By the time he looked up, he was only staring at the door.
Seeing Min Chi suffer a setback, Wen Leling could not help but purse his lips and let out a soft chuckle.
Hearing this, Min Chi’s mood instantly shifted from cloudy to sunny. “Le,” Wen Leling furrowed his brows and glared at him.
Min Chi immediately caught the meaning behind the look and corrected himself: “Guide Wen, you are awake!”
“How are you? Does it still hurt anywhere?”
He looked like a puppy whose owner had finally returned home. Unfortunately, Min Chi did not have a tail; he only had a small snake on his shoulder, shaking its head excitedly.
So close!
“I am fine.” Wen Leling pushed Min Chi’s face away as it leaned in. Now that the look of defeat was gone, Wen Leling did not want to spare him a single glance.
This was the man who refused to return his doll and caused him to end up in a cast!
He turned a smiling face toward Song He and asked, “Why have you not gone back yet?”
“I,” “I want to,” Wen Leling twitched his ear against the pillow, signaling him not to rush; he could wait for him to finish at his own pace.
But then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Min Chi walk out of his field of vision with a sour expression.
Feeling a sense of foreboding, Wen Leling shifted his gaze to follow him.
At the same time, Song He happened to recover from his stutter and said clearly: “I want to stay and take care of you.”
“?”
“I do not,” Wen Leling looked back at Song He in surprise, but before he could finish his sentence, a large, chilled hand pinched his cheek and forced his head back.
He was met with a face full of heavy hostility, one that practically had the words “Don’t you dare agree” written across the forehead. The sight made Wen Leling shiver.
Fortunately, he had not intended to agree anyway, so it was not a difficult situation. He tapped Min Chi’s wrist with his ear to indicate he understood, and only then did Min Chi let go.
He said, “Song He, you should head back first. I can manage on my own.”
Manage? That was a blatant threat from Min Chi just now!
That move looked incredibly practiced. Who knows how many times it had happened in private? Once? Twice? Or maybe three, four, or five times.
Song He was determined to stay today. If anyone was leaving, it would be him taking Wen Leling with him!
Making up his mind, Song He grasped Wen Leling’s wrist, conveying a steady strength through the silence. However, the grip was not tight; Wen Leling pulled away easily.
Awkward. I hate how my tongue fails me when I need it most, Wen Leling thought as he numbly rubbed the back of his neck. Then, a spark of inspiration hit!
He explained: “The toxins in my body might not be fully cleared yet. It is not appropriate for you to stay. Maybe another time. When that happens, I will take my turn to look after you.”
