- Chapter 23 - Empathy: Don’t Touch That Doll!
Min Chi always felt that his sixth sense was incredibly accurate. Having confirmed it once again between Wen Leling and Lele, he only paused for a brief moment. He then acted as if nothing had happened, gently pulling away the quilt Wen Leling had used to cover his head. Drawing him into his arms, he coaxed him in a low voice:
“Guide Wen, don’t be afraid. I won’t let it hurt.”
He did not change how he addressed him, fearing Wen Leling might instinctively flee. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the other’s lack of preparation, he pinned his hands and pressed down on his legs.
Wen Leling had only relaxed for a second, but when he tried to put his guard back up, he found he could not move at all. Lowering his head, he bit down hard on Min Chi’s offending hand. He used such force that the metallic taste of blood filled his mouth, yet he refused to let go.
He thought the pain would force Min Chi to release him. Instead, as if in retaliation, Min Chi leaned down and bit a small piece of flesh on the back of his neck.
He had guarded the front but forgotten the back!
A shiver ran through Wen Leling. Terrified that unbearable pain would surge through him at any moment, he hurriedly released Min Chi’s hand and sobbed, “Don’t.”
His mind was a mess and completely stalled; he could not think of any sweet words to convince Min Chi to let him go. He could only shrink his neck as much as possible, wishing he could make it disappear entirely to force Min Chi to let go.
Min Chi saw through his little scheme and said hoarsely, “Relax.”
The tip of his nose pressed against Wen Leling’s neck. The hot breath puffing against his skin felt itchy, making him twist and dodge uncontrollably.
“Be good, and I will be gentle. If it hurts, bite my hand, okay?”
It was a tone of negotiation, but it left Wen Leling with no room for choice.
While his mind was still lost in a fog processing the request, his neck was firmly pressed down by a large hand, leaving it completely exposed. This was followed by a slight, stinging pain.
The dense teeth sank deeper into his skin. The pain made him restless, sparking a new round of struggling. However, because his consciousness was blurred and his breath was weak, he felt powerless. After moving a few times, Wen Leling’s arms went limp and hung loosely to the side.
By the time the marking was complete, he had fallen into a deep sleep.
Under the influence of the temporary mark, Wen Leling had a dreamless night, not opening his eyes until the sun was high in the sky.
As the memories of last night flooded back into his mind without any buffer, like seeing a horror clip from a ghost movie, he sprang up from the bed.
He happened to collide with the sight of Min Chi pushing the door open and walking in slowly. To him, it was like watching a ghost crawl out of a television set. Unable to escape, he frantically dove back under the covers and curled into a ball, patting his pale face.
It hurt. This time, it was not a dream.
Min Chi placed a bowl of soup on the nightstand and poked the ball: “Come out.”
Go out? If he went out, it was all over! He remembered clearly that he had accidentally exposed himself yesterday. Even if he tried to fake a blackout or pretend to have amnesia, there was no saving it.
Min Chi let out an amused chuckle and leaned close to the ball. “Do you want me to help you out?”
Hearing this, Wen Leling emerged almost instantly. Part of it was fear that Min Chi would use some methods on him, and part of it was that it was simply too stifling to breathe inside the quilt. He took several deep gulps of fresh air, smoothed the messy hair away from his eyes, adjusted his crooked pajama collar, and continued to fidget.
One small movement followed another, reflecting his internal panic.
Min Chi smiled without saying a word. He picked up the exquisitely dressed doll from the nightstand and held it up next to Wen Leling’s face for comparison. “So similar. It is very beautiful.”
Wen Leling immediately recognized it as his Empathy Doll. Since he had already been caught, he did not have many reservations left; he reached out to take it back.
However, Min Chi was quick. Just as Wen Leling was about to touch the doll, Min Chi pulled it back behind his own back. As Min Chi’s hand gripped the doll’s waist, Wen Leling’s lower abdomen tightened.
Probably because they had been out on missions these past few days, he had not had time to touch the doll. Having not felt that strange sensation for a long time, his body broke into a cold shiver from the stimulation.
“Give it back to me.” His mind and body felt refreshed after recovering from his illness, supplemented by the temporary mark and the controller.
Wen Leling felt under the pillow from left to right, and top to bottom, but his hand came up empty. Where was his controller?
“Are you looking for this?” Min Chi took something out of his pocket. Wen Leling looked over; it was exactly the controller he was looking for.
It was just a controller; he still had the temporary mark. As long as the mark was there, it was a small matter!
Wen Leling commanded with full confidence: “Give them back to me.”
Min Chi merely smirked as if it were nothing. “And what if I do not?”
He still had that punchable face!
If Min Chi would not give it back, then he could only take it by force. However, he had to be careful not to damage the doll, or he would be injured too.
But before his feet could even touch the floor, one of his legs was grabbed by Min Chi and draped over his shoulder. He was wearing pants, but the sense of humiliation felt like a rising tide. In the blink of an eye, it climbed up his limbs, overflowed his chest, and surged to the back of his throat.
Wen Leling’s face flushed a deep crimson, and even his breath became hot. “You, let go!”
His mind was also fueled by the things Min Chi had said in the live broadcast room. They were not necessarily vulgar, but they always made his face turn red.
Truly anxious now, Wen Leling grabbed a pillow next to him and threw it.
Min Chi did not intend to dodge; on the contrary, he wanted the pillow to hit his face. That pillow had been held by Wen Leling all night, so it would surely be very fragrant.
Seeing the corners of Min Chi’s mouth turn up uncontrollably, Wen Leling was certain he was thinking of something improper, so he threw another pillow in quick succession.
Both pillows landed squarely on Min Chi’s face. A faint fragrance permeated his nostrils. Min Chi used the hand holding the doll to brace against the second pillow. He took a deep breath and let out a satisfied, light sigh: “Baby, you smell so good.”
“You, are you a pervert?” Wen Leling was dumbfounded. He never expected Min Chi to pull something like this. He hurriedly kicked his legs to scramble backward, though he did not forget the main task. He tried to negotiate: “Give the doll back to me, and I will make it up to you with a few more, how about that?”
Min Chi followed him step by step. Seeing Wen Leling so desperate to get the doll back, he could not help but wonder if there was something unusual about it. Or perhaps, maybe it held a special meaning. Was it a gift from someone special, or a gift intended for someone special that was never sent?
He wanted to know. But if he asked repeatedly and Wen Leling still refused to say, he would let it go and return the doll.
Unable to tell what Min Chi was thinking, Wen Leling watched him stand by the bed, his gaze unconsciously falling on the doll. Was he distracted?
Wen Leling steadied himself and tentatively moved forward. Min Chi did not move. He moved again, but Min Chi remained standing there, unresponsive.
Confirming he was dazed, Wen Leling did not care where Min Chi’s soul had wandered; he only had eyes for the doll. He lunged forward suddenly, while simultaneously releasing his mental power to attack Min Chi’s palm, hoping the pain would make him let go.
Unexpectedly, he hit a snag halfway. His foot got caught in the bedsheets, and instead of catching the doll, it fell to the floor with a loud crack.
Before Wen Leling could even feel the chill of despair, a sudden, sharp pain erupted in his knee. He tried to move, and the pain intensified. Even when he stayed still, there was a clear, dull ache.
The doll’s knee had cracked, so his leg had cracked as well.
“Ah!”
“You, do not move!”
“Min Chi, do not touch that doll!”
Coming to his senses, Min Chi did not pick up the doll immediately. Instead, his heart tightened. After a stunned moment of heartache, he felt like he had fallen from a high-rise alongside the doll; his movements were mechanical as he tried to pick it up.
But just as he gingerly lifted the doll, Wen Leling’s heart-wrenching cry of pain diverted his attention.
Torn between the two, he carefully supported the doll’s calf to ensure it would not move, then leaned toward Wen Leling and asked worriedly: “What is wrong, baby?”
“I, it hurts. My leg. Take me to the hospital.” The pain shot straight to the top of his head. Wen Leling felt dizzy. The momentary excessive tension from just now further obstructed his breathing; his heart pounded so hard it felt stuck in his throat.
It felt like he was dying; it was miserable. He gasped for air, one hand clutching his chest as he slumped down, the other holding his leg. “Put the doll to the side.”
Min Chi had no idea what was happening. It was normal for the doll’s leg to crack when it hit the floor, but Wen Leling was on the bed, so how could his leg be injured?
Uncertain of where the problem lay, he hurriedly put the doll down. Because his movements were hurried and complex, he could not prevent the doll from shifting slightly as he moved it.
Every time it moved, Wen Leling cried out in pain. It was too strange and too bizarre. Just now, Wen Leling had specifically emphasized not to move the doll. As Min Chi had Song He start the car and sat in the vehicle heading to the hospital, a bold and unscientific idea could not help but sprout in his mind.
Could this doll share Empathy with Wen Leling?
