- Chapter 76 - Rivals X Fake Heiress
According to Guan Yue’s usual temperament, she certainly would have snapped back, but looking at the frost covered Su Mi in front of her, she felt a bit apprehensive. The more direct words she wanted to say died in her throat.
She only dared to whisper, “We are all adults…”
Su Mi looked down at her, her thin lips parting slightly. “Shouldn’t adults be responsible for their own actions?”
Guan Yue looked up at her upon hearing this. “Why are you taking it so seriously? Besides… it’s not like you were the one who lost out.”
From her perspective, regarding the chaotic and hazy scenes from last night, all she could recall was her own state of surrender. Meanwhile, this person in front of her finished with her clothes perfectly intact, it was Guan Yue who had lost more, surely.
The frown on Su Mi’s face had not eased. Droplets of water that hadn’t been wiped away slid slowly down her tight jawline.
Looking at Guan Yue, who didn’t even dare to meet her eyes, Su Mi laughed out of pure anger, though there was no hint of warmth in her eyes.
“So, you don’t want to be responsible, and you don’t want me to be responsible either.”
Guan Yue’s mind was already a mess. With so many complicated things piled together and Su Mi speaking so aggressively, she didn’t want to think anymore.
“Yes, I just don’t want to be responsible, and I certainly don’t need you to be,” she said, turning her head away petulantly.
A heavy silence filled the space between them again. The air seemed to freeze into ice in an instant, and time stood still.
Su Mi’s gaze was piercing. Her hand hanging at her side clenched into a single fist, the faint blue veins on the back of her hand slightly visible.
After a long time, she finally suppressed her surging impulses. Pursing her lips, she took a step back, giving Guan Yue the space and the exit she wanted.
Watching Su Mi take that step back, Guan Yue felt as if a piece of her heart had suddenly gone hollow.
Neither of them spoke. Finally, Guan Yue shifted her feet, as if testing the road ahead.
After taking the first step, she turned and took a second.
Su Mi leaned her back against the wall, watching Guan Yue’s departing figure.
With every step Guan Yue took, Su Mi felt her heart becoming emptier, like a mottled, old city wall that couldn’t withstand even a light tap, any movement would cause large patches of plaster to crumble away.
Ultimately, Su Mi couldn’t stop herself from stepping forward and grabbing the other woman’s wrist. She asked, “Is my love really that terrifying to you?”
“Guan Yue, what exactly are you afraid of?”
Guan Yue stood still after hearing her words. She didn’t turn around or answer, seemingly trying to use silence to combat the question.
“But as I told you before, I won’t give up,” Su Mi’s tone softened slightly. “However, I hope you won’t say things like you did today so casually in the future.”
Only after saying this did Su Mi slowly release her grip on the other’s wrist.
She suddenly remembered something. “If you’re going back, wait for me for a moment.”
Though Guan Yue didn’t respond, she didn’t leave either.
Su Mi went back to fetch some items. When she returned, she held one of her own jackets and Guan Yue’s room card.
Guan Yue kept her head down as she took the items. Her long hair falling on both sides obscured most of her face, making it impossible to see her current expression.
Su Mi saw her out. Only after seeing her enter her room did Su Mi raise a hand to rub her temples.
There was no doubt she had been truly angered by Guan Yue just now. Even though she had mentally prepared herself, she still couldn’t help being provoked.
From various previous signs, it was impossible for Guan Yue to have no feelings for her at all. Yet, when facing Su Mi, she always put on an evasive act, as if she couldn’t honestly face her own heart.
Su Mi felt she needed to keep her composure, otherwise, if she truly scared the girl away, all her efforts would be for naught.
Su Mi looked toward Guan Yue’s room once more. Still, this matter shouldn’t be smoothed over quite so easily.
On the day the film crew halted work, the rain outside, varying in intensity, never stopped.
Later that evening, someone in the crew’s group chat asked if anyone wanted to wander the nearby streets. A few people with energy to spare responded.
Su Mi didn’t want to go out in the rain, nor did she like joining crowds of strangers, so she stayed in her room all day.
Around noon the next day, the rain finally let up. Road repairs had just begun, but fortunately, the sections washed away by the rain were few and not severe. They were temporarily filled with gravel within half a day.
On the third day, the crew resumed work as normal.
Early that morning, Su Mi ran into Guan Yue in the makeup room. In the past two days, although they lived next door to each other, they hadn’t seen each other once.
She gave a slight nod and said, “Morning.”
Even though Su Mi’s tone didn’t sound different, Guan Yue felt it wasn’t as gentle as before.
Guan Yue gave a muffled response: “Morning.”
After that, the two barely spoke until they arrived on set to begin filming.
Once work resumed, everyone noticed something slightly “off” about the two leads, though they couldn’t put their finger on exactly what it was.
The script supervisor and the lighting technician, harboring secrets they dared not speak, silently performed their duties.
The person who felt it most was the director. Looking at the two of them in the same frame on the monitor, her thick dark brows knitted together.
In the previous scene, these two had been like glue in front of the camera, but now, that “spark” was missing.
In the shot, Guan Yue was always slightly stiff when facing Su Mi. When making eye contact, she would dodge nervously. The camera magnified these flaws, making her look timid and cowering.
While Su Mi was better, her dominant aura was a bit too overbearing, as if she couldn’t quite reel it in.
Puzzled, the director picked up the script resting on a box and flipped through it. “This isn’t an ‘enforced’ script. Where are they taking this performance?”
One scene, one shot, NG’d over a dozen times. It was a pressure both mentally and physically.
Guan Yue was sweating from nerves, but fortunately, the director eventually captured the cinematic language she needed.
Because the roads were only temporarily repaired, the director feared another accident if they stayed too late, so she intended to end work early over the next few days.
Today, she was concerned about the state of her two female leads. After discussing it with the assistant director, the latter suggested organizing a small gathering to bridge the distance between everyone. After some thought, the director agreed.
Originally, before filming started, the director had wanted to treat the leads to a meal to get them acquainted, but Su Mi had been busy then, so it had been delayed.
So, after the day’s filming ended, the director went over to ask Su Mi and Guan Yue if they wanted to join her for a casual meal.
Guan Yue was stunned by the offer and instinctively looked at Su Mi.
The director assumed Guan Yue was intimidated by Su Mi after all, Su Mi’s status in the industry was formidable, so she addressed Su Mi first. “Teacher Su, what do you think? Do you have time?”
Su Mi glanced at Guan Yue. “I have time. It depends on whether Teacher Guan is willing.”
Hearing this, Guan Yue felt that if she said no, she’d be disrespecting both of these “big shots”… but she wasn’t unwilling to begin with.
“Of course,” she said with a smile.
The director felt relieved. “Great. Let’s just take my car then. I have a few things to settle with the crew, let’s head out together in a bit.”
Naturally, neither had any objections.
After the director left, silence fell between the two again.
Su Mi walked to a nearby lounge chair and sat down. When she closed her eyes to rest, the coolness of her features was unmistakable.
Guan Yue, who had been thinking of how to start a conversation, saw her like this and gave a small huff, turning her back to her.
After Guan Yue turned away, Su Mi opened her eyes and watched her back. Her fingers rubbed together lightly, her gaze indifferent.
Seeing the way Guan Yue “extended her claws” and then retracted them, a hint of a smile finally touched Su Mi’s eyes.
The director didn’t keep them waiting long. After finishing her tasks, she hurried over.
“I’ll go bring the car around. Teachers, please wait for me outside,” the director said, jiggling her car keys before heading out.
Only then did Su Mi stand up, walk to Guan Yue’s side, and say quietly, “Let’s go.”
Guan Yue still remembered her earlier coldness and would usually have said something, but remembering the scene from two days ago, her defiance instantly withered.
She followed behind Su Mi in silence.
The director parked the car at the entrance. She leaned down to look at them through the window. “I’ll have to trouble you two to sit in the back together.”
The assistant director was in the passenger seat and greeted them as well.
Su Mi opened the car door and stepped aside, signaling for Guan Yue to get in first.
Because the directors were present, Guan Yue very politely smiled and thanked Su Mi.
The director looked at the harmonious way they were interacting and felt that nothing seemed amiss, which eased the weight on her heart.
Once on the road, the assistant director began finding topics for conversation. “I remember seeing in the interview files that Teacher Guan is from Yun City?”
Guan Yue replied, “Yes.”
“Yun City is a nice place. We just went there for a meeting last month.” The assistant director then asked Su Mi, “What about Teacher Su?”
Su Mi looked straight ahead. “I am also from Yun City.”
The assistant director was surprised. “Then the two of you really are fated. Perhaps you even bumped into each other unknowingly in the past.”
Guan Yue denied it. “Yun City is so big; the probability of two people meeting is too small.”
Su Mi knew her temperament. Even if she had restrained herself a lot, she would still find opportunities to let a bit of it out.
The director, who was driving, chimed in. “That’s true. A big city has a lot of people. Even two friends living just two blocks apart might not necessarily see each other.”
She didn’t know what was wrong with her statement, but after she said it, both people in the back seat fell into a simultaneous silence.
Fortunately, the assistant director switched to a different topic.
Half an hour later, they arrived at their destination, a local Tujia restaurant.
The town was small, and there weren’t many places with private rooms. Moreover, this place was close to the hotel where Su Mi and the others were staying, about a five minutes walk.
The proprietress enthusiastically led them to a private room, and the four of them took their seats.
The director asked about dietary restrictions and then ordered the food.
Sitting in the private room, the four of them chatted. It wasn’t too awkward, and as they talked, they grew closer.
Both directors were in their early forties, not a particularly large age gap and their topics were modern, so there wasn’t much of a generation gap.
At the height of the conversation, the director stepped out and brought back some low-alcohol beer.
Guan Yue looked at the canned beer beside her, feeling tempted to try, but Su Mi reached out and took the can from in front of her.
The director then remembered. “Oh, Xiao Guan’s alcohol tolerance isn’t very good, right? My mistake for forgetting. Xiao Su is much more attentive.”
“Actually, I can drink a little. That time with the red wine was because I drank too fast, so I felt dizzy,” Guan Yue said, glancing at the “culprit.”
Su Mi smiled faintly and raised her beer toward Guan Yue. “Then I’ll offer Teacher Guan an apology here.”
Guan Yue felt like her “punch” had landed on cotton, soft and yielding but looking at Su Mi like this made her heart feel like it was sinking.
Because of this topic, the two directors started talking about filming again. These two long-time friends actually began to have disagreements as they spoke.
Su Mi and Guan Yue had to act as mediators. However, although these two were bickering loudly one moment, they acted as if nothing had happened the next.
“She and I are like this. We’ve been friends for many years; this is just how we get through things, noisy and argumentative.”
“Yes, if something is wrong, just speak up and it’s fine.”
The two directors spoke in tandem, and Su Mi and Guan Yue finally understood the intention behind this dinner.
However, the directors only mentioned it briefly and never brought it up again.
The four of them discussed the script until nearly nine or ten o’clock. Finally, the assistant director checked the time and forcibly stopped the director, who was getting more and more excited.
The assistant director hadn’t been drinking, so she drove everyone back.
As for Su Mi and Guan Yue, since it was close, they planned to walk back on foot.
The four of them parted ways at the entrance.
On the way back, Su Mi and Guan Yue walked slightly apart.
Because it had just rained, a chill seemed to rise from the ground, feeling cool against their faces.
Su Mi would occasionally look back to confirm Guan Yue was there, but she didn’t speak to her.
Guan Yue, not knowing who she was frustrated with, walked with her head down, occasionally kicking a pebble on the side of the road.
They reached the hotel entrance this way, but Guan Yue suddenly stopped. “You go back first. I need to go to the supermarket nearby to buy something.”
On the steps, Su Mi turned back to look at her. Beneath her mask, only her elegant eyes were visible, with a few stray hairs falling over them. “Where is it?”
“Just over there.” Guan Yue pointed to a spot not far away. Indeed, there was a small convenience store.
Su Mi thought for a moment and gave a faint “Mm.”
Seeing Su Mi leave, Guan Yue walked toward the small supermarket.
She carefully selected her item, eventually picking the best-looking one.
“Beautiful, do you need a plastic bag?” the proprietress asked her.
Guan Yue shook her head and held the cold object in her hand.
After entering the hotel elevator, she stared at the item in her hand, appearing somewhat hesitant.
It wasn’t until the elevator chime signaled her arrival that she snapped out of it.
Guan Yue stepped out of the elevator and walked forward, but she stopped just before turning into the corridor where her room was located.
Feeling somewhat annoyed with herself, she turned and leaned against a wall.
Finally, she took a deep breath. Just as she placed her finger on the pull tab, a smooth, slender hand reached out from the side. A sleeve shifted slightly upward, revealing a fair and thin wrist.
The other person’s long fingers gently rested on the can in her hand, stopping her movement.
Su Mi stepped out from the shadows and took the beer can from Guan Yue.
“Guan Yue, don’t try to push the solution to every problem onto alcohol.”
