- Chapter 33 - Hold Me Tight
After lunch, Yang Xueying thought the two of them would leave, but to her surprise, things didn’t go as she expected.
“Is there anything you need brought over?” The person asking her was actually Lin Yishu, who didn’t seem to like her very much.
Yang Xueying picked at her fingers, wanting to say “no” against her heart. But thinking about how she had to stay in the hospital for a few days and had no relatives here, the only people she could rely on were the two in front of her.
So she could only answer in a low voice: “I have some basic daily necessities at the youth education point. If possible, could I trouble you to bring them over?”
Lin Yishu turned to Li Yan and said, “Then let’s head back first. We’ll bring her some food later this evening and bring her things along as well.”
Li Yan: “Alright.”
Although they couldn’t watch the movie today, it could be considered a good deed after all.
The two sat for a while longer before preparing to return to the village.
Before leaving, Lin Yishu looked back at the person on the hospital bed who was staring blankly and finally couldn’t help but caution her: “Stay away from that Fu Sinian in the future. He is not a good person.”
Yang Xueying looked up, her gaze meeting Lin’s. She wanted to ask why she said that, but seeing Lin’s serious expression, she subconsciously nodded, “I understand.”
Seeing that she was sensible enough to recognize her good intentions, Lin Yishu felt a sudden burst of desire to vent and added: “While we aren’t here, if you need any help, you can find that Dr. Xu from earlier. She… she’s quite alright, a good person.”
Yang Xueying nodded obediently again.
Lin Yishu searched her mind but couldn’t find anything else to advise, so she left one last sentence: “Don’t eat random things this afternoon. We’ll bring you dinner tonight, just wait for us.”
Yang Xueying stared at her blankly.
It felt as if something was growing in the empty space in her heart.
Once they stepped out of the hospital, Lin Yishu seemed to suddenly revert to her “spoiled” nature. Looking at the empty road, she complained, “What a hassle, having to make this long trip all over again.”
Li Yan squinted and smiled at her, “If you think it’s a hassle, why did you offer to bring her food and stuff just now?”
Lin Yishu kicked a pebble by her feet and mumbled, “I just thought she was pitiful.”
Li Yan’s heart melted completely.
That was just how Lin Yishu was, appearing to have quite a temper, but actually being more soft-hearted than anyone.
She couldn’t help but pat Lin’s head, her voice full of affection, “Oh, our Yishu, you really are a soft-hearted and innocent ba… good girl!”
The word “baby” almost slipped out again. Li Yan hit the brakes just in time to avoid the awkwardness from before, shouting “close call” in her mind.
Lin Yishu turned to glare at her, her almond eyes filled with mock irritation, “Are you truly praising me or being sarcastic?”
Li Yan raised both hands as if taking an oath to show her sincerity, “I am naturally praising you for real!”
Lin Yishu’s eyes flickered as she looked away, “If you’re praising someone, just praise them. Why be so…”
Cloying.
The word was stuck on her lips, but she couldn’t say it.
She looked away.
Li Yan, however, was waiting for her to continue. Seeing her silence, she leaned in to find her gaze, “What? What were you going to say? Is my praise not good? But those are my true feelings! Lin Yishu, you can’t distrust my sincere heart!”
Lin Yishu deliberately avoided her gaze, but the other person was like a shadow, relentlessly pursuing her.
Lin Yishu was forced to meet those sparkling eyes.
Hearing those words again, her heart rhythm grew inexplicably chaotic.
What do you mean ‘sincere heart’? How can this person speak so shamelessly!
The two returned home and briefly explained the morning’s events.
Li Chunmei sighed, “I didn’t expect that Youth Fu was that kind of person. Truly, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Youth Yang was so good to him, and he just left her at the hospital like that?”
Li Yan glossed over the argument between Lin Yishu and the man, nodding solemnly, “Exactly.”
She then added, “Anyway, our family should keep our distance from him from now on. If we can’t avoid him, we have to stay alert.”
A man like that had a heart smaller than a booger. Especially remembering the way he looked at them today, it was better to be safe than sorry.
After talking to the family, Li Yan remembered she hadn’t applied the medicine to Lin Yishu yet. She hurried to apply it, and the two took a short nap before heading to the youth point to fetch Yang Xueying’s things.
They thought they might run into Fu Sinian again, but the youth point was empty.
It seemed Fu Sinian hadn’t returned yet.
Without having to see that annoying face, Lin Yishu’s expression brightened a bit, and she stepped forward to help.
After gathering Yang Xueying’s belongings, they went home for a quick dinner.
Before they left, Li Chunmei stopped her daughter and whispered, “Yanyan, go to the village chief’s house and borrow the bicycle. It’s winter, it’s too much for Yishu to keep running back and forth. Maybe we should buy a bicycle for our family later. It’ll be convenient for going to town or for when you start working.”
Hearing her mother bring this up herself, Li Yan grinned and said honestly, “I was thinking the same thing! I was afraid you wouldn’t agree. Hehe, I didn’t expect us to be on the same page.”
Li Chunmei put on a stern face, feigning anger, “What are you saying? Am I that unreasonable?”
Li Yan gave a flattering smile, “No, no, of course not. I was judging a noble person with my petty mind.”
After some playful banter with her mom, Li Yan scurried off to the village chief’s house to borrow the bike.
Once she brought the bicycle back, she tapped the back seat boastfully, gesturing for Lin Yishu to get on.
Watching her show off, Lin Yishu couldn’t help but laugh.
“Come on up, I’ll take you for a spin.” Seeing her laughing but not moving, Li Yan urged her again.
Looking at how high the bicycle seat was, Lin Yishu was a bit skeptical, “Can you handle it?”
Li Can, standing nearby, immediately raised her hand to seize the opportunity, “If Sister Yishu won’t sit, I will! Sis, take me for a ride!”
Li Yan didn’t even have her sister in her sights. Seeing that Lin Yishu didn’t believe her, she straddled the seat with her long legs, tilted the bike slightly, kept one foot on the pedal and the other firmly on the ground, and tilted her chin up at the skeptic. “Steady as a rock! These legs are more than enough for this 28 inch bike.”
Lin Yishu’s eyes followed her gaze down to her legs.
Li Yan’s legs were indeed very long, slim, straight and powerful.
For some reason, her eyelashes fluttered, and she quickly looked away.
Hiding the strange thought in her heart, she walked over, “Then be careful. If you drop me, I won’t let you off easily.”
“Don’t worry, don’t worry,” Li Yan laughed, then asked, “Do you want to sit in the front or the back?”
Lin Yishu thought for a moment and said, “The back.”
The front would block the view; the back felt safer.
Hearing this, Li Yan used her sleeve to wipe the seat, “Princess, please take your seat.”
Lin Yishu looked at her, puzzled?
Li Yan: “It’s nothing, just get on.”
Internet memes are dangerous; the habits from my past life really haven’t faded.
Lin Yishu sat sideways, her hands awkwardly unsure of where to go.
Back at her own home, she rarely even stepped out the door, and the few times she did, she was in a car. She had never sat on a bicycle like this.
Sensing her hesitation, the person in front suddenly reached out, took her arm, and wrapped it around her waist.
Despite the thick layers of clothing, Lin Yishu’s ears turned red instantly.
She knew it!
All that talk about taking her for a spin, it was just an excuse for this!
Even as she thought this, the grip of her hands tightened slightly.
“Sit tight and hold on! Here we go!”
With a bright laugh from the front seat, Lin Yishu felt the biting cold wind whip against her face.
She instinctively closed her eyes.
The person in the front seat seemed to have eyes in the back of her head. Sensing her tension, she excitedly encouraged her, “Lin Yishu, are you scared? Don’t be. Open your eyes and look, this is the scent of the wind, and the scent of freedom.”
Her voice was so full of life and infectiousness that Lin Yishu overcame her anxiety and opened her eyes.
Her blurred vision gradually cleared. The scenery around her transformed from dots to lines and then expanded into a plane. The world felt like it was on rewind, and only they were moving forward.
The cold wind couldn’t stop the inner warmth; the spark named “freedom” burned brightly in her heart.
For a moment, Lin Yishu truly felt that even this vast world could no longer trap her.
The curve of her lips grew wider. She felt a reckless urge to keep riding like this until they reached the end of the world.
Lin Yishu released her hands from the waist of the person in front and spread her arms like wings of freedom.
Li Yan felt the hands around her waist suddenly loosen, and a surge of nervousness hit her.
“Lin Yishu, hold me tight!” she shouted anxiously, while reaching back with one hand to find the other’s hands.
Consequently, she didn’t notice the small rock protruding from the road ahead.
After a jolt, seeing the bike spinning out of control and the two of them falling backward, Li Yan did her best to cushion the person behind her with her own hands and body.
The fall was beyond control, but luckily they landed in a spot with deep snow, so it didn’t hurt much.
Ignoring the bicycle, Li Yan urgently checked on the person lying on the ground with her.
“Lin Yishu, are you okay? Did you hit anything? Are you hurt?”
Her barrage of questions received no immediate answer. Instead, a few seconds later, the person half-buried in the snow let out a low, soft laugh.
The laughter was short but joyous, clearly coming from the bottom of her heart.
Li Yan froze.
“Lin Yishu, what happened?” she asked, puzzled.
How did a fall make her so happy?
Lin Yishu lay with her arms spread wide, her upper body almost submerged in the snow. She looked up at the sky above, then turned her gaze to the person beside her.
She didn’t speak, just stared quietly at the other.
Although Li Yan didn’t know why she was acting like this, she could feel the happiness overflowing from her laughter, so she stopped talking and just met her gaze.
The two of them lay there in the snow.
Until finally, Li Yan suddenly sat up, studied Lin Yishu’s face closely for a long moment, and then abruptly leaned in close to her.
Lin Yishu looked at the face inches away. After a brief stun, she instinctively closed her eyes.
